Message from Leadership
Today’s challenging environment brings with it opportunities for leadership, growth and innovation. Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston entered the year with ambitious plans to expand our services with new, innovative programs and set our sights on providing compassionate end-of-life care to more patients and families than ever before. Our vision was clearly articulated by the Board of Directors and executive team and wholeheartedly embraced by our staff. The execution of our strategy drove the results that follow and we’re proud of the hard work, success stories and metrics that fill the pages of this report. From the expansion of the Kaplan Family Hospice House to the introduction of the Complementary Therapies Program and the acquisition of Partners Hospice, the past year was marked by achievements that have positioned Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston well for the changes of healthcare reform. With imagination, ingenuity and resourcefulness, and most importantly with an unwavering commitment to our mission, Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston continues to lead the way as it has done since 1978. Leadership, growth and innovation defined our success during the past twelve months. With the continued dedication of talented leadership, energized staff, committed volunteers and generous community supporters, we will work together to ensure the mission of Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston for many years to come. Sincerely,
Diane T. Stringer, President

The Opening of the Ayer Anderson Wing In 2005, we opened the Kaplan Family Hospice House. As the first licensed hospice inpatient facility in Massachusetts, it became an invaluable resource for the community in a very short period of time. Nearly 3,000 patients have received expert end-of-life care, advanced pain and symptom management, spiritual support and respite care services within its walls. In order to meet the growing needs of the community, in June 2010 we opened the Ayer Anderson Wing. The wing includes eight private patient care suites, including a specialized pediatric care suite for children who require complex pain and symptom management. Each room has a private patio overlooking beautiful landscaping with gardens and wetlands.
—2—
The new wing also includes a state-of-the-art care station as well as additional meeting space and offices. The wing’s living room features a large fish tank, a children’s play space and a computer alcove for family use. A beautiful new garden was created with donations from Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston employees. With careful planning and thoughtful consideration paid to the architectural design, landscaping and grounds, the addition now looks like it’s been a part of the Kaplan Family Hospice House since the beginning. Even with the best of care from the most loving families, there are times as the end of life draws near when a patient needs a comforting alternative to home—a place where schedules are flexible, where cozy rooms are decorated with home in mind, where a patient can receive round-the-clock care from highly skilled Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston caregivers. For so many families facing life limiting illness, death and loss of a loved one, the Ayer Anderson Wing and the entire Kaplan Family Hospice House provide a comforting place where rooms are filled with personal keepsakes, where children, family and friends can gather and are always welcome. The Kaplan House is a place where families can be comforted by the assurance that their loved one is receiving the compassionate care provided by Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston’s expert staff.
“We feel so blessed that he was able to be in such a beautiful place.” —Debra McLeod Sister of Kaplan House Patient

A Year for
Growth Founded in 1978 as an independent, not-for-profit organization, Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston has grown steadily and is now the largest and most comprehensive hospice provider in Massachusetts. Over its thirty-two year history, the organization has become well known for its innovative programs, including inpatient and home-based hospice and palliative care services and state-of-the-art programs in grief support and pediatric care. In 2010, Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston further strengthened its leadership position by entering into a formal agreement with Partners HealthCare at Home for the acquisition of Partners Hospice. Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston and Partners Hospice came together as two organizations with a common mission to provide compassionate, comprehensive care to patients and families during one of life’s greatest challenges. Both organizations share a commitment to the highest standards of quality care, as well as access to that care for anyone who needs it, regardless of diagnosis, acuity, or ability to pay. The acquisition of Partners Hospice broadens Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston’s service area to 86 communities in eastern Massachusetts. Now, with an expanded service area and larger operation, Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston is focused on continued growth and success as a community based, not-for-profit hospice. Its deep community roots, established patient base, and strong collaborative relationships with the region’s health care systems and hospitals, help Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston to be well positioned in a dynamic healthcare environment. Facing the challenges of healthcare reform and reimbursement cutbacks that confront all providers, Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston has the expertise, scope and efficient operations to remain true to its compassionate mission to provide superior care to those facing life limiting illness, death and loss.

A Lifetime of
Compassion and Caring
Kathleen Schroot was the first Registered Nurse hired at Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston. Her commitment to caring for the dying would span a career of 24 years, providing care to patients in homes throughout Hamilton, Wenham and Cape Ann, as well as at the Kaplan Family Hospice House. Kathleen was a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse, Reiki practitioner and a compassionate caregiver. After many selfless years as a caregiver, Kathleen found herself in the unfamiliar position of one who needed care when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006. Months of chemotherapy and radiation treatment followed. Complications from the treatments caused inflammation of her skin and muscles, which sapped her strength and proved even more challenging to deal with than the cancer itself.
Kathleen Schroot and her close friend, Hospice Aide Cindy Berry
While no longer able to manage the demanding work of hospice nursing, Kathleen remained committed to the hospice mission. She had a great appreciation for the role of the hospice volunteer as a member of the interdisciplinary team, and she completed the training program to become a hospice volunteer providing Reiki to patients. “There are so many ways to help,” she explained. “Everyone has a talent they can lend.” Despite her strides toward recovery, Kathleen’s illness became advanced and she sought services from Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston in the fall of 2010. For two months at home, Kathleen received loving care from her hospice friends and former co-workers. She remained very much in control of her own care, making careful decisions about how her symptoms could best be managed and communicating frequently with the hospice medical team and her attending physician. When her symptoms worsened and she was no longer able to swallow, Kathleen decided to go to the Kaplan Family Hospice House where she could have round-the-clock care. A week later, she died peacefully with her husband and children by her side. Kathleen’s legacy of grace, compassion and clinical expertise continues in the many hospice nurses she trained and mentored over the course of her career. An annual award for compassionate hospice nursing is being established in Kathleen’s honor, to be awarded in May of each year to the Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston nurse who most exemplifies Kathleen’s qualities.

Body, Mind & Spirit In 2010, Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston launched a new initiative to enhance quality of life for terminally ill patients and their families— The Complementary Therapies Program. The program has been developed to nurture the body, mind and spirit using non-invasive, holistic practices that serve as an addition to the hospice plan of care for patients. The seven available therapies include aromatherapy, music therapy, pet therapy, massage for patients and caregivers, Reiki, expressive arts and meditation techniques.
Patient & Caregiver Massage Patient massage is geared towards relaxation and feelings of wellbeing. Massage can be provided on a patient’s bed, massage table or chair by our Licensed Massage Therapists. Caregivers also need care. To assist family caregivers during this challenging time, chair massages by a Licensed Massage Therapist are offered free of charge.
Aromatherapy Aromatherapy incorporates gentle massage to the hands and feet with the use of fragrant essential oils. Aromatherapy is offered by Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston volunteers and Hospice Aides specially trained in attentive touch. Aromatherapy can reduce stress and tension and ease emotional pain.
—6—
Art & Music Therapy Expressive Arts and Music Therapists work with patients and families using the creative arts as a form of therapy. With imagery, storytelling, music, poetry, and visual arts, the therapist fosters relaxation, stress reduction, self-expression, and healing.
Reiki Reiki is a gentle, hands-on relaxation technique. Among its many benefits are reducing stress, easing pain and promoting a feeling of well-being. It is a noninvasive, compassionate therapy that both soothes and calms. A Reiki session works to both replenish and balance the body’s energy. A practitioner gently places his or her hands on the recipient to encourage a flow of this energy.
Music at the Bedside Our “sound” environment—whether the calming voice of a loved one, a favorite tune from our teen years, or a bird who has chirped outside a home window can help soothe the spirit, gladden the heart and lessen suffering. Music at the bedside, provided by local musicians or carefully selected recordings, can help to promote symptom management and relaxation.
Pet Therapy Animals bring out our nurturing instinct. They also make us feel safe and unconditionally accepted. The therapeutic use of pets helps patients and families with relaxation as well as stress reduction.
“We have seen clinically that these complementary therapies relieve stress and tension, aid relaxation and promote a better sense of well-being for patients.” —Judy Cranney Vice President/Chief Operating Officer for Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston

Make a Difference
Your Gift Will
Your gift to Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston ensures that those in need will receive comfort, peace and dignity in the caring hands of our dedicated professionals and trained volunteers for years to come. Your charitable gift may also lessen your tax liability.
Cash Contributions and Matching Gifts
Gifts of Appreciated Property
Cash contributions to Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston are fully tax deductible. Many companies match the gifts of their employees – check with your employer to see if your gift can qualify.
You can donate appreciated property (stocks, bonds and real estate) to Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston. When you donate property that you have held for more than a year, your gift is exempt from capital gains taxes. Your charitable deduction is based on the fair market value of the asset at the time of your gift.
Bequests A simple way to provide for Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston is through a bequest in a will or living trust. Any part, percentage, or component of estate or trust assets can be designated to Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston and will help to reduce inheritance taxes.
Income-Generating Gifts You can also use cash and appreciated property to establish a charitable remainder trust or charitable gift annuity that will provide income and tax benefits to you, while benefiting Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston.
To discuss any of these options or for questions, please contact Elizabeth Macomber, Vice President for Philanthropy, at 978-750-9394 or emacomber@hns.org.
Please consider a planned gift to Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston and let us know of your intentions so that we may count you among our friends whose future gifts will ensure that the mission lives on for those in need of services when it matters most.
