The terms 'good hair' and 'bad hair' came out of slavery...The closer your hair was to white European hair, the more likely that it was that you had white blood in you. That meant that you would have more access to better food, better education, preferential treatment and be more likely to be set free--so literally good hair meant a better chance at life. It wasn't about beauty at all; it was about survival.

Discrimination: Discrimination based on hair texture is a form of social injustice, found worldwide, that targets Black people, specifically Black people who have afro-textured hair that's not been chemically straightened. Universally, afro-textured hair has frequently been seen as being unprofessional, unattractive, and unclean. The state of New York and California just passed laws banning such silly basis for discrimination. The saddest thing to acknowledge. Nearly all aspects of life for Black people throughout U.S. history has been brought under scrutiny by the White population in the United States. Generally, we can assume there is an unnatural envy or jealousy factor for one group of people to have such a biased emphasis on another group of people's cultural activities.
Negative Relationship Issues: Another situation impacting Black women in particular is the negative feedback they receive from their partners. It seems weird that having issues with dating or when in involved in social circles your hair becomes a concern. How in the world could that even exist? Some researched points given by those who do not wear natural hair. Two main reasons: 1.) Looks unkept or unclean. 2.) Not attractive. When pressed on the issue of not being attractive. No respondent would say what in particular is unattractive. However, through further investigation. What was being said on a very subtle level is that the hair did not fit into a Western or European view of pretty or well maintained hair. In this case, attractiveness is being measured at all levels up against White perception of what looks good or not.
Hair Maintenance: In the past several years there has been a growing market and desire for natural hair care. Though most of the brands for natural hair are overwhelmingly owned by White companies. Bringing up the oddity that you can denigrate the value of a cultural difference but on the other hand profit from it.
