A revolution. That’s how you could easily describe the development of the Red Holstein population within the Holstein breed. In a relatively short period of time its ranks have grown quickly. Nowadays Red Holsteins often are the most sought-after animals in the barn. You will find an excellent reflection of the ascent of the Red Holstein breed in Tim Baumgartner’s article on pages 16 to 19 in this second edition of the Red Revolution. And there is plenty of reason to assume the “red revolution” will continue in full force. Thanks to the red factor, the offering of Red Holstein bulls has quickly grown in recent years. And now, thanks to genomics, this offering will get another substantial impulse. Yes certainly, thanks to the use of DNA technology on both the male and female side of the equation, the level and volume of the red and RC bull offering will increase further. It is special that the “red revolution” is being followed by another revolution. It is the Red Holstein population in which the polled gene is the most predominant. The past two years demand for polled bulls has grown very quickly and today we can talk about an explosive growth of both demand and the offering of polled genetics. Because of this “polled revolution” the presence of red genetics will continue to increase quickly. Therefore: the double revolution!
