BDPA Mission, Vision & Background The BDPA Vision
Be a powerful advocate for our stakeholders' interests within the global technology industry.
The BDPA Mission
BDPA is a global member technology organization that delivers programs and services for the professional well-being of its stakeholders.
Background BDPA (Black Data Processing Associates) is a non-profit organization of professionals working in or having an interest in the Computer Science and Information Technology fields. BDPA has a diverse representation of information technology professionals. Included amongst the organization's members are programmers, analysts, engineers, managers, instructors, and entrepreneurs, to name a few. Earl Pace and the late David Wimberly founded BDPA in May of 1975. BDPA was formed out of a concern shared by both men that minorities were not adequately represented in the information technology industry. The first BDPA chapter was organized in Philadelphia, PA. The second chapter was organized in 1978 in Washington, DC. Shortly thereafter, the third chapter was organized in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1979, BDPA was restructured as a national organization. Currently, there are more than thirty active chapters across the United States.

Message from the National President As a global member focused technology organization, our mission is to deliver programs and services for the professional well-being of our stakeholders. Founded in 1975, our founders Earl Pace Jr. and the late David Wimberly had a vision to build an organization that would be a powerful advocate for its stakeholders’ interests within the global technology industry. Our stakeholders consist of students, adults, entrepreneurs, educational institutions, and corporate sponsors.
Our 2010-2011 Strategy and business plan focuses on 3 pillars: • Operational Readiness • Organizational Transformation • Member Value Proposition The 2010 – 2011 administration developed both a short and long term strategies that align with the BDPA mission and brings the organization to focus on the primary product of the organization, its members and membership by executing a shared vision of: “Taking Membership to the Next Level”
Yvette Graham Yvette Graham
National BDPA President
In 2010, we were an organization that worked on strengthening our operations, as major decisions were made on how we would restructure the organization. With that said, during our National Delegates Meeting, it was approved to move our organization to Regionalization, where more focus can be given to chapters to help strengthen their programs, and grow their membership. The National Executive Committee is poised and focused on providing programs to help prepare our members for today’s market place. During the 4Q2010 National Board of Director’s Meeting, we aligned on the following 4 programs for 2011:
National Membership Drive National High School Computer Competition Alumni Program National College Student Program and the National IT Institute
For over 35 years, From the Classroom to the Board Room has become our motto. In 2011, we will continue to implement programs that will ensure our members are well positioned as leaders and highly skilled IT professionals and entrepreneurs for our sponsors and the community. We’ve accomplished a lot in 2010 and in 2011; the best is yet to come. Our focus will continue to be on “Taking Our Membership To The Next Level” as we transform our organization while delivering quality programs. BDPA, we are embarking on a major milestone year and I am looking forward to working with everyone as we continue to “Transform While We Perform”. I am proud of the progress we have made over the past year. Our plans and goals are clear. As you review our accomplishments in the pages that follow, I invite you to get involved and help “Take BDPA To The Next Level”.

Message from the Founder 2010 proved to be a turbulent and uncertain period, not only for non-profit and trade organizations such as BDPA but for the United States and most other nations. Fiscal conditions worldwide saw national economies collapse, corporations downsizing at greater rates and unemployment increasing in just about every sector. Although suffering from some of the hardships these conditions created, BDPA continued to aggressively pursue its objectives and came out of 2010 stronger than it has been in several years! In spite of operating in a much heralded economy of decline and pessimism, BDPA produced one of its strongest and well received Annual Conferences when it returned to its founding city of Philadelphia, PA! In addition to our “always strong” assortment of technical, professional development, career preparation and management and development workshops, we presented several very high level seminars covering significant topics such as Cyber Security, IT Workforce Development, Small Business Opportunities, on a local and national arena and Federal IT Initiatives. Our annual banquet was keynoted by Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations. Membership in BDPA is one of our most important products. It is particularly significant when a member makes a lifetime commitment. I was pleased, along with Admiral Roughead, to welcome and induct as Charter Members of BDPA’s Founder’s Club, those members who have made that commitment. Each year we will continue this tradition of receiving new lifetime members and expressing BDPA’s appreciation.
Earl A. Pace Jr. Earl A. Pace, Jr.
BDPA Co-Founder Since 1975
When moving from the Founder’s Club reception to the Annual Banquet, Admiral Roughead and his wife had the opportunity to view some of the presentation posters of our IT Showcase high school and college students. In addition, they had an opportunity to actually engage some of these students as well as some of the participants in our High School Computer Competition in conversation. They were so impressed with the knowledge, IT preparation and demeanor of these students that BDPA and the Navy are now working together to create a formalized relationship between the two organizations to further the preparation of youth in the technical and scientific fields. The federal government considers the need to prepare our youth technically and scientifically to be a national security issue! For over 35 years preparation of our youth for entrance into technical and scientific fields has been one of BDPA’s main objectives. We welcome the United States Navy to that effort as well as any other participant that understands the imperative. 2011 and beyond holds nothing but promise for BDPA. Why not come along and join the fun!

BDPA’s STEM Programs BDPA’s STEM Programs are geared toward individuals who are interested in the field of technology. The following highlights the programs that we offer: 1. Student Information Technology Education and Scholarship (SITES) Program: • Our SITES program is our pre-college program that puts hundreds of high school students each year on a more firm path to college and eventually the IT profession. Early preparation of the next IT generation is a primary emphasis for BDPA. 2. Information Technology (IT) Showcase: • Allows student presenters from educational institutions across the United States to present and demonstrate their research on advanced computing and technical topics to an audience of corporate representatives and IT professionals. 3. High School Computer Competition (HSCC) Teams: • Students from across the country match their skills in extensive oral and written exams and a five-hour Web programming assignment. 4. Annual Technology Conference and Career Fair: • Held across the United states where we provide programs, workshops and panel discussions in the field of technology from improving or growing your technology skills to making that transition into management through project management or leadership within Corporate America or Entrepreneurship.
For over 30 years, we have been in the community bringing knowledge and awareness in information technology to encourage both young and old. Why do we do it? Because the greatest gift is giving back and when you can give back to a community, it becomes contagious and everyone grows.

The BDPA Student Information Technology Education and Scholarship (SITES) Program The BDPA Student Information Technology Education and Scholarship (SITES) Program is our precollege program that puts hundreds of high school students each year on a more firm path to college and eventually the IT profession. Early preparation of the next IT generation is a primary emphasis for BDPA. BDPA works at the community level to give students hands-on experience to generate interest in the computer field through seminars, workshops and training that culminate with the High School Computer Competition at BDPA’s National Annual conference. Here, students from across the country match their skills in extensive oral and written exams and a five-hour Web programming assignment. Your generous sponsorship of this great program will help students explore technology development as a career option and highlight the career opportunities that are available to them as a profession. Our pre-college motivational programs, which include the following key events are making a tremendous difference in bringing African-Americans into the industry and, with your help, can bring even more students into the loop:
• • • • •
High School Computer Camp Regional High School Computer Competitions National High School Computer Competition National Youth Technology Camp Mentoring Program
In addition to our programs for high school students, we also have several for college students, including the College Student Internship Program. This matches our corporate sponsors with our college members majoring in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or an IT-related curriculum. Academic courses are combined with practical on-the-job experience to help students prepare for immediate employment and advancement in technical careers.

National High School Computer Competition Testimonials Alex Tolbert (Cleveland, 2007-2009) My experiences with BDPA Cleveland chapter have been nothing short of amazing. I had the opportunity to learn multiple coding languages and website design over the course of my three years participating in the chapter’s Student Information Technology Education & Scholarship (SITES) program.
Francisco Nunez (Washington DC, 2006-2010) My name is Francisco Nunez of the BDPA Washington DC Chapter. I have been in the High School Computer Competition (HSCC) program for half a decade. I have many fond memories of the national conferences that I’ve attended during that time.
Gregory Chambers (Hartford, 2001, 2004-2005) My first experience with the HSCC was early in middle school, when I sat in on an HSCC training class where the students were learning to design a basketball game. I was inspired by this project, as I had spent time using object oriented programming to create levels and worlds for one of my favorite DOS-based games, ZZT, which itself came with its own integrated development environment.
Nana Yaa Kwansa (Southern Minnesota, 2007-2010) With the kind of commitment the coordinators and volunteers demonstrated in training and supporting the class, I have also come to understand the value and the importance of giving back to the community. The impact of feeling just a little bit more positive about life, and the spirit of generosity – giving back unconditionally to others, even to strangers as well.
Brandee Lyles (Columbus, 2010) I truly enjoyed myself at the BDPA conference. It was nice to be around other children that you could relate to and had somewhat similar interests. Overall I think my team and I worked very well together and I am looking forward to doing the program again.

The remaining 15% of income derived from membership dues, membership services and other income sources. The Annual National Conference and High School Computer Competition continue to be flagship programs and represent a primary source of income for the organization. A challenging economy called for a more stringent approach to managing expenses. BDPA instituted programs and committees to control and reduce expenses that resulted in a leaner business model at the end of 2010. The National Conference remains the biggest overall expense for the organization at 52% of total expenses. The cost of the National Office represented about one third of total expenses for 2010, (Salaries and Operating Expenses). Monica L. Bowe, CPA Outside Director National BDPA
