Mrs Eaves was named after John Baskerville ‘s housekeeper, Sarah Eaves, who also happened to be his mistress and creative assistant. Designed in 1996 by Zuzanna Licko, Mrs Eaves became one of the most popular typefaces of the late twentieth century. Creating her own revival of the eighteenth- century types of Baskerville presented her with the opportunity to design fanciful ligatures helping to develop visual interest and reminiscent customized lettering.

Licko created a typeface with an overall openness, lightness, and legibility. Derived from the Baskerville typeface, she reduced contrast, reduced the x-height, and increased the lower case width of each character to create Mrs Eaves.

It maybe the lovely roundless, small caps, ligatures, or old-fasion numerals, that’s Mrs Eaves a designer’s favorite...

Mrs Eaves is a mix of just enough tradition with an updated twist. It’s familiar enough to be friendly, yet different enough to be interesting. Due to its relatively wide proportions, as compared with the original Baskerville, it’s useful for giving presence to small amounts of text such as poetry, or for elegant headlines and for use in print ads. It makes the reader slow down a bit and contemplate the message.
