he development of the world has allowed mankind to benefit from many amazing changes that have considerably improved the conditions and quality of life. Even those areas of the world that were traditionally poor and backward are quickly catching up. Much of this is due to the development of a mindset where the people of Scotland have had much to say. What is known as the Scottish Enlightenment ushered a new era for the benefit of the common people all over the world. Even though there is still much room for improvement, that the existential-philosophical challenges that humankind faces are pervasive -indeed there is no such thing as a new man- and that we will invariably face crisis from time to time, we can feel optimistic about the condition and opportunities that humanity faces today.

Kilchoan Estate is a cultural and educational enterprise in rewilding, preservation and sustainability for the benefit of the people of Argyll and the world.
Kilchoan is not only a geographic place, occupied and farmed for centuries, but also aims to be a concept and a centre of learning, study and enlightenment.
The era we live in has brought with it new challenges. Sustainability and old age seem to be the pressing topics that we are confronted with. How can we make development compatible with a cleaner, healthier and natural environment? Can we repair the damage we have brought upon our habitat? When urbanization plays a key
The Kilchoan Initiative must leave an enduring legacy for this and future generations.
Kilchoan is spiritual in the widest sense; essentially Christian but ecumenical too and open to all.
Our aim is to become a respected, admired and loved member of the Community.
role in giving access to better conditions, how can we not lose the vital connection with the beauty and marvels of nature? What is the meaning of life when our life span has increased way beyond our health span? A life-long struggle to retirement and dementia, what for? How can we confront the intergenerational debt that we are leaving behind?

The Kilchoan Initiative is a space to reflect on these issues, to generate an environment that will be conducive to enthusing people with the current challenges that humanity faces. We are optimistic that, by embracing the ideas that were developed in Scotland around the 18th century, by the likes of Francis Hutcheson, David Hume and Adam Smith; by reconnecting with our condition as creatures created by God endowed with freedom, intelligence, willpower and the capacity to love and by developing a closer relationship with our natural world, the younger generations will find solace to confront the more fundamental existential issues that mankind has always faced and those that are characteristic of our time.
