The Essentials Getting to Egypt Scheduled flights operate daily from London Heathrow to Cairo and weekly to Luxor with flight timings 5-6 hours. There are numerous charter flights from Gatwick, Manchester and other regional departure points to Luxor, Hurghada and Sharm el Shiekh all with a flight time of 5-6 hours, each offering various levels of service. Because of the wide choice and variable prices, particularly in quieter periods, First Option Egypt excludes the cost of flights from our Base Price allowing the flexibility of either your Travel Agent adding a flight best suited to you or allowing us to quote the best available price at the time of booking. Travelling Around in Egypt First Option Egypt offers flexibility for your perfect holiday and details of our featured resorts can be found on Page 15. Holidays to Luxor, including Nile Cruises, can be combined with a stay in Hurghada (coach transfer 4 hours) or Cairo (air 1 hour or overnight train 8 hours). Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh can be combined (air 30 minutes or catamaran 90 minutes) and both resorts can be combined with Cairo (air 1 hour). Some charter airlines permit one-way reservations allowing flights in to one resort and out of another. Because of the choice that should be available to you, First Option Egypt will always recommend the best itinerary to suit your requirements.

The Price of Your Holiday To calculate the price of your holiday in Egypt, we use a ‘Base Rate’ for each of the resort options as detailed below. The pages within this brochure featuring cruises and hotels highlight a seasonal supplement (and sometimes reduction) that should be applied to the Base Price. And if you require additional nights at a particular hotel, just add the cost shown in the relevant price panels. Because of the variety of choice, we endeavour to keep our pricing straightforward without hindering your choice – it is your holiday!

Nile Cruising There is no better way to explore the ancient sites of Upper Egypt than on a leisurely cruise along the majestic Nile. First Option offers a choice of floating hotels, carefully selected to ensure your comfort, enjoyment and a base from which to discover the awesome architectural treasures. Our cruise itineraries are specifically designed to enable you to visit some of the world’s most extraordinary archaeological wonders. All our cruise holidays include a ‘Ten Visit Pass’, escorted by an Egyptologist guide, within the price. The quayside berths offer wonderful opportunities to experience town life. Wander along the cornice in Luxor, visit the market in Aswan, take a horse and buggy ride through the streets or felucca trip across to an island. During the cruise, watch an ever-changing portrait of Egyptian life along the great river as farm hands tend their cattle, fishermen land their catch and children wave you on your way.

‘TEN VISIT PASS’ INCLUDES SIGHTSEEING TO: IN LUXOR: Luxor Temple – right in the heart of the city and built by Amenophis II and Rameses II. The sanctuaries and courtyards are dedicated to Theban gods. Karnak Temple – with its huge Temple of Amun and the Hypostyle Hall. Hatshepsut Temple – incredible terraces were carved from the rock to house the temple dedicated to Queen Hatsheput. Valley of the Kings – it is here that the great Pharaohs rest and the corridors and chambers of the tombs are adorned with spectacular carvings and inscriptions. We include entry to three tombs with a fee payable locally should you wish to visit the tomb of Tutankhamen. IN ASWAN: Philae Temple – once feared to be lost under the water, marvel at the reconstruction of the relocated temple on Agilika Island. Unfinished Obelisk – an insight in to how the Ancient Egyptians constructed their temples at this abandoned site. The High Dam – modern day technology, albeit during the last century, helped to develop land for agricultural purposes. Botantical Gardens – take a felucca ride across to the island for a leisurely stroll through the attractive and fragrant gardens. IN EDFU Edfu Temple – dedicated to the falcon headed god Horus, this is the best preserved monument in the country. IN KOM OMBO Temple of Haroeris & Sobek – The crocodile god is honoured by this spectacular temple overlooking the river.

06

Optional Excursion: FROM ASWAN: Abu Simbel – a choice of excursion by air or road (recommended) involves a very early start but visits the incredible reconstructed temple that overlooks Lake Nasser. FROM LUXOR: Cairo by air – a full day to visit the Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza as well as the Egyptian Museum (book in advance) Hot Air Baloon – an exhilarating 45 minute journey over the West Bank. Sound & Light Show – enjoy the narration about the history of Luxor and the Pharaohs. Optional excursions are booked onboard with exception of Cairo by air which should be reserved prior to arrival.

On occasion, floating hotels operate a three and four night itinerary with guests joining and leaving in Aswan. When this occurs, a seven night programme will include a second stop at Kom Ombo and Edfu and some duplication of evening entertainment.

Making the most of Egypt Although many tourists are attracted to Egypt for the rich history, others are attracted by the guaranteed sunshine – and all can be assured of the exceptional value and warm hospitality offered by a Nation that has welcomed visitors for centuries. Make the most of your holiday and combine the treasures to be found on a Nile Cruise or the museums of Cairo with the beaches of the Red Sea. First Option Egypt offers combination holidays to suit your requirements!

City Stays Cairo Cairo is the largest and most cosmopolitan city in the Arab World and spans the majestic Nile. At Giza, the magnificent Pyramids and Sphinx are the most iconic site but the city itself is packed with antiquities, bazaars, atmosphere, laughter, noise and so much more making it a superb addition to any holiday. It can be added as a long (and packed) day trip from each of our resorts or (recommended) as a three night add-on within and extended holiday. Luxor Luxor has attracted tourists since the nineteenth century when the first visitors arrived by steamer to visit the ancient ruins of Thebes. Today, it caters for thousands of Europeans heading for a cruise up river to Aswan. Although their itineraries will include visits to the West Bank and Luxor Temple, the city offers excitement and intrigue most suited for a few extra nights stay.

Beach Holidays Hurghada Hurghada was once a simple fishing village standing on the Red Sea – and indeed some of the original homes still stand in the town surrounded by boutiques and bars. The resort and surrounding area now thrives on tourism with large international standard hotels bordering the public beaches. This is a sun worshippers paradise and is popular with those combining a discovery cruise with relaxation. Sharm el Shiekh Sharm el Shiekh is perhaps the best known area on the Red Sea but actually comprises several resorts including Na’ama Bay. Popular with all families, couples and activity seekers such as divers, the comfort offered and the international renowned hotels is as good as anywhere!

Travel between Resorts Please refer to page 4 for travel arrangements within Egypt. Other Resorts and Hotels First Option Egypt can organise single and multi-centre holidays throughout the country and can reserve hotels at many other hotels not mentioned within these pages. Whatever your tailormade requirements, please contact us!

On a private island just outside Luxor, the Jolie Ville is surrounded by lush tropical gardens and has a wide range of amenities – including a children’s zoo and a large affinity pool. First Option recommends the Jolie Ville Away from the hustle and bustle of Luxor, we like the aire of tranquillity here. The rooms are chalet style scattered around the grounds and the sunset views are amongst the best in the area. Recommended combinations Combine a stay here with a cruise on the Florence or Semiramis, or the Sunrise Mamlouk Palace in Hurghada. Consider too the Movenpick Pyramids in Cairo.

Luxor

Sheraton Lu Sheraton Luxor

A little further than an easy stroll from the main spread of Luxor, the Sheraton Luxor nevertheless enjoys a magnificent location right on the banks of the Nile. A wealth of facilities includes excellent restaurants and sporting activities. First Option recommends the Sheraton Luxor We like this resort hotel because of it’s admittedly corporate feel – but this is complemented by attentive service, quiet efficiency and an excellent pool deck overlooking the river. Recommended combinations If combining with a cruise, consider the Stephanie or Semiramis. For a different half to your holiday, select the Mamlouk Palace in Hurghada.

General Inform Things you should know

Things you should know The Arab Republic of Egypt offers a wealth of exciting opportunities – whether it be visiting the ancient temples or relaxing on a world-class beach. The predominantly Muslim country earns more from tourism than any other industry and now welcomes a greater number of visitors from Britain than any other European country. This is a country of seventy-five million people occupying a million square kilometres – but of that, ninety-five percent is desert! Throughout this programme, First Option has carefully described what you can expect from a particular chosen holiday. Add to this the welcome you will receive from an incredibly courteous people - offering a friendly, relaxed and generally informal level of service – and a holiday in Egypt will be difficult to surpass!

Nile Cruises - Managing Expectations! At First Option, we want you to enjoy your holiday and have carefully researched the cruises we offer in our portfolio. Some of the ships on the Nile might have the appearance of having been around since the time of the Pharaohs, others are obviously a lot more modern – but all are subject to the continual effects of heat, blazing sunshine and the dust that can be expected in such a climate. General maintenance can be carried out by crew members, usually timed to occur while the majority of passengers are on excursions to avoid disturbance, but some major work can only be done in Luxor – including the cleaning of the pool. Should you encounter a general maintenance concern, please report it to the Ship Manager who will ensure necessary action is taken or an explanation provided. This allows all parties the opportunity to remedy any problems while you are on holiday! With more then three hundred floating hotels plying the Nile, diesel fumes and engine noises will be apparent. It is usual for the floating hotels to refuel in either Luxor or Esna which involves a short sail to the fuel depot. The panoramic nile view from your cabin will be ever changing on sailing days. In reality though, on mooring days, floating hotels often dock up to ten abreast meaning the view will be as exciting as the ship next door! It is for this reason, that caution should be exercised and comfortable flat shoes worn as boarding often involves passing through the other floating hotels.

28

Star Ratings Star Ratings used for the hotels in this programme generally reflect those of international standards. On Floating Hotels, the local categorisation is awarded based on the facilities onboard and not necessarily the standards. First Option advertises the local star rating and all of our featured Floating Hotels are 5-Star or 5-Star Deluxe. In the opinion of First Option, to advertise a Floating Hotel as simply 5-Star is misleading. We have, therefore, introduced a secondary grading; Intro-Range, Mid-Range and Top-Range translating in to three, four and five star respectively and better reflecting the expectations of the British visitor.

General Inform When to visit Egypt

When to visit Egypt For visitors heading to the Red Sea Resorts of Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh, the temperature is going to appeal at any time of the year with the busiest periods during the winter months. Cairo can actually be quite chilly and overcast during the winter but is still a superb addition to a beach holiday – perhaps for that reason! Along the Nile, the weather can be ferociously hot and many excursions are timed to depart very early in the morning to avoid the midday sun. September to January are the busiest months for cruises with the more manageable temperatures being on March, April, October and November. There are many festivals throughout Egypt but one to note is Ramadan, a month long period of fasting where some services can be affected. In 2007, Ramadan concludes on 11 October and, in 2008, is celebrated between 1 and 29 September.

Suitability of holidays A holiday in the Red Sea resorts of Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh will appeal to everyone seeking sunshine, relaxation and sporting opportunities – including, of course, some of the best diving possibilities. Hotels are modern, efficient and cater equally as well for individuals, couples and families.

Eating & Drinking A great variety of international cuisine is available in our resort hotels and the hotel bars serve a good variety of alcoholic drinks. On the Floating Hotels, meals are usually at set times timed to coincide with the departure and arrival of excursions. A good variety of international cuisine is available from the buffet with seating some times up to ten per table. Alcohol is readily available but the selection of international brands is not what we are used to here. Although there is considerable choice, please remember to advise us of any specific dietary needs you may have. Please exercise sensible attention when purchasing food and drink ashore!

By their very nature, Nile Cruises can have limitations as to suitability. Much of the focus is on early morning starts to visit fascinating archaeological sites. Onboard entertainment is very limited with little or no organised activities for children. In the evenings, although the Floating Hotels have a ‘disco’, music is usually from a CD with most guests retiring early soon after dinner in readiness for the next day. Great caution should be taken when travelling with younger children, who must be watched at all times. Assistance is always available when boarding the Floating Hotels which often involves traversing between several moored side-by-side with different deck levels! In Luxor, Edfu and Aswan in particular, a great number of steep steps have to be taken to quayside. When you arrive in Egypt We have a Representative at the airport to meet you from your flight. British Passport Holders require a visa to enter Egypt and these are easily obtainable upon arrival before proceeding through Immigration. Our local Representative will assist you with the simple procedure.

Out and about, there are some bars but, please remember, the local custom is to general meet up in bars to chat and drink teas. It should also be noted that many Egyptians enjoy tobacco and that smoking is permitted in public areas – except in sections of most restaurants.
