Chris Weber, author
Why do education leaders need help in doing what works?
How will your book help leaders make common-sense changes?
New initiatives and new ideas are the norm in education. And we have never had greater access to research on what works best for students. We all need help identifying what works best and where we should focus our staff’s precious time and resources. Our teachers are incredible. We need assistance in guiding them in the implementation of the most effective practices.
Each chapter empowers leaders to guide change and reemphasize common-sense practices. Chapters provide easy-to-digest research on common-sense practices and offer examples of the implementation of these practices within a school district. Each chapter concludes with suggested specific next steps.
Give one example of a common-sense practice that is often overlooked. One of the common-sense and research-based practices with which my district is currently engaged is reprioritizing the standards that all students will master in a given grade level or course. This is not a new concept, but still the quantity of content within too many districts’ curriculum guides is compromising the quality of learning. Depth is being sacrificed for breadth. We are committed to teaching all standards but we do not teach them all as if they are equally important. These prioritized standards inform instruction and serve as the focus of our PLCs and of our reteaching efforts.
Doing What Works
What makes this book a must-have among leadership support resources? Given the complex world for which we are preparing students, time within school days and school years is more precious than ever. Doing What Works provides guidance on which practices are most worthwhile as educators work to ensure all students are ready for college and a skilled career.

Ten Common-Sense Leadership Practices to Improve Student Learning By Chris Weber While new ideas and innovative programs and pedagogies are exciting, the simplest methods are often the most effective. In Doing What Works, author Chris Weber outlines ten practical, common-sense practices proven to transform student learning and propel school success. Each chapter includes examples from real school leaders and classroom teachers, as well as a series of suggested next steps.
• Rediscover common-sense strategies and practices proven to strengthen schools and increase student learning. • Receive recommendations and real-world examples to strengthen understanding of the ten specific practices outlined in the book. • Explore how to prioritize content to maximize learning and ensure students learn behavioral skills alongside academic skills. 0ASBCA–BKF916 $36.95 USD | $48.50 CAD ISBN 978-1-949539-19-6 208 pages
