We use the term development, not evaluation, because there is a fundamental distinction between measuring someone’s performance and helping someone improve performance. The evaluation process needs to do both, but a substantial focus on development is essential to meaningful teacher and leader growth.
Our teacher and leadership development models are a cut above the rest. Here are a few reasons why:
+

A transformative approach to the evaluation process
Dr. Robert J. Marzano has made it his life’s work to discover the most effective K–12 classroom practices. He and his associates have spent decades analyzing what works in schools and classrooms around the world. Change happens, inside and outside the walls of MRL, but the fact remains that school improvement needs to be comprehensive, research-based, and consistent.

Work to align your state standards with the Marzano model
“Teacher development is a multifaceted process. Although it is often equated with teacher evaluation, development has different goals and motivations. Evaluation is designed to measure competence; development is designed to increase expertise. Expertise has often been viewed as something that a person either has or doesn’t, but research has shown that this is not the case. Expertise can be developed over time, and growth is facilitated by goal setting, practice, feedback, coaching, and reflection.” —Dr. Robert J. Marzano
Chart your path to better school leadership This is the starting point—and the finish line—for your on-site PD. Training can be completed in just two days or customized to meet your needs. These research-based best practices strengthen leadership schoolwide.
Today, 69 school districts in the state of Washington use the Marzano Teacher Development Framework to satisfy their evaluation requirements. John Waldren, administrator of special projects for Wenatchee School District, talks about his experience using the model and the impact professional development from MRL has had on his district. Please briefly describe your needs regarding teacher development.

Where does one begin? The most helpful part of the PD experience has been the specific trainings that address the specific components of the model. As a result of the trainings so far, our staff is developing a common language about teaching in addition to understanding the different levels of teacher expertise. Finally, I cannot emphasize how valuable the overall emphasis has been upon developing teacher expertise using this model as a ‘growth model.’ This underlying emphasis saturates all of our trainings and is very encouraging to our staff.”
What would you tell an educator who is considering MRL for teacher development work?
Without hesitation, I would advise any educator to consider MRL for teacher development work. This organization has the most comprehensive understanding of the Marzano instructional framework. The lab’s work is vetted by Robert Marzano, who also takes an active role in their work. In addition, those resources that are available to teachers to improve their instructional expertise have been developed by those who are employed by MRL, many of whom are professional development trainers for school districts. Does it get any better than that?”

The Wenatchee School District needed to provide administrative and certificated staff with training on learning the Washington state evaluation model (Marzano version) and how it applies to classroom instruction. Our state and our school district did not have the capacity to accomplish this on their own without outside assistance.”
MRL is an outstanding organization. The MRL trainers are highly skilled trainers and model the strategies they are teaching in a most engaging manner. I have also found them to be very approachable and willing to discuss any questions, ramifications, or concerns about the model that I have needed to share while going through this training. Finally, they have also provided additional assistance that has been extremely helpful as we continue to implement the model in our school district.”
