EXPERT
& QA You have collaborated on an exciting new book. What is the focus? The focus of our new book, Time for Change, is to explore and offer practical insight and solutions to the most common obstacles that leaders face in creating a healthy school culture. Readers will be introduced to two forms of staff resistance: rational and irrational. Rational resistance is the natural by-product of exposure to bad leadership. Irrational resistance occurs when an educator simply does not want to change, based upon personal preference. We will reveal strategies to overcome both types of dilemmas. After reading the book, both administrators and teachers will be better equipped to engage with other professionals to collectively embrace change in policies, practices, and procedures designed to increase learning for all students.
What inspired you to write this book? We have had the honor of serving educators all over the world as education consultants. After introducing audiences to effective practices, like establishing a strong professional learning community (PLC) or redesigning their school to respond to struggling learners (RTI), the most frequent question asked by educators has been “How do we get our staff to buy in to these practices?” This burning question led us both to collaborate on the need to research and share tools that would allow leaders to tactfully and effectively confront adult resistance.
How does it contribute to the core mission and vision of Transforming School Culture?
Anthony Muhammad, author
Luis F. Cruz, author
healthy school culture, this book will focus on the leadership behaviors that help to transition a school culture from toxic to healthy. This book is essentially an extension of chapter seven of Transforming School Culture, which introduced the reader to the influence of leadership.
What specific challenges will it help educators overcome? The most essential benefit for the reader will be the demystifying of the change process. We understand that educational professionals are sincere, but sincerity alone is not enough to be truly effective. We will provide the evidence that proves that four important leadership behaviors can totally transform a school culture when used properly. There are few things more frustrating than working hard and using the wrong tools. We want to help the reader understand that the masterful implementation of a few highly effective skills is much more beneficial than using a plethora of ineffective strategies. We want the reader to walk away from this text and shout, “I can do this!”

What inspired you to write 100-Day Leaders?
What have you seen educators achieve in 100 days?
Significant change doesn’t take nearly as long as we traditionally thought. We used to think it would take around three years to make significant change in elementary schools and five years or longer for high schools—but what we’ve found is that this simply isn’t true. With highly effective leadership, schools can make meaningful improvements in a much shorter time frame.
The most important achievements we have seen in the last couple of years are short-term changes in policies related to homework, assessment, grading, and attendance. Within one semester, schools begin seeing tremendous improvements, which gives everyone involved a sense of professional pride.
What types of tools and protocols will readers find in the book?
What is the primary challenge for leading change, and how does this book help? The number one challenge is a lack of focus—too many things to do and too many competing initiatives. Leaders are perpetually fragmented, and 100-Day Leaders gives them a practical way to gain clarity and commit to a few specific priorities. The secret of a 100-day leader is not really the 100 days. It’s committing to short, recurring cycles of high energy and passionate focus on work that truly makes a difference.
100-Day Leaders
100-Day Leaders features protocols for creating a solid foundation, building clarity and trust, making researchbased decisions, achieving short-term wins, and celebrating the work. These protocols, along with the other tools and strategies found in the book, will help readers focus on the right things at the right time in order to create a culture of continuous improvement. Ultimately, we hope this book gives educators a sense of urgency and the confidence to begin making a difference in students’ lives now—not years from now.

& QA What inspires or drives your work? The fact that we get to work in a profession where we can foster a love of learning and help students see themselves as capable, successful learners. We are also inspired by strong, intentional leaders and schools that function as PLCs. They create an environment where learning is the focus, work collaboratively to ensure that all students learn, and use student results to make decisions about next steps. It just makes sense, and we have seen firsthand how it makes a difference for students.
What will educators find most valuable in Leading With Intention? Leading With Intention is designed to help educators develop a school or district committed to collaboration. The book dives deep into eight interrelated areas of school leadership, and depending on their current needs, readers can focus on any of the chapters, in any order. Each topic provides the reader an opportunity for reflection, with questions and templates to support learning.
