Action Civics and Deeper Learning

Key Takeaways for the Power of Action Civics and Authentic Experiences

Following are some key takeaways from this chapter on the power of action civics and authentic experiences.

Action civics programs encourage students to identify and research societal issues, design public policy solutions to address them, and mobilize support for their public policy solutions. This approach aligns with research suggesting that authentic, project-based learning experiences lead to deeper student learning. Several action civics programs have emerged to help educators and students engage in this work with existing social studies courses and curricula. Two examples include Generation Citizen and the

Mikva Challenge. Educational technology can play a key role in amplifying the impact of action civics in various phases of a student project, including research, collaboration, communication, and public mobilization.
