Next Steps
In 2021, through the processes laid out in this book, the International Community School (ICS) of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, where Timothy was head of school and Cal is deputy head of school, became one of only three international schools recognized as an exemplary Model PLC school outside the United States and the first on the African continent. With this book, we hope to pass on the experiences and learning we’ve gained through our work, as well as our mistakes, with a pathway and essential resources for other schools to help them on their journey.
Consider the following suggested actions for getting started on becoming highly effective and then moving to the next level by becoming learning progressive.
Getting Started on Being Highly Effective
• Engage your stakeholders in discussions about where your school wants to be, collect baseline data, and set goals. • Identify the need and urgency for change with stakeholders. • Consider having leadership team members engage in professional development to become familiar with the HRS model. We recommend reading Professional Learning Communities at Work and High
Reliability Schools (Eaker & Marzano, 2020).
• Consider what structures need to be put in place or improved to allow all students to learn at high levels. • Develop a culture of continuous improvement within the faculty by aligning the school’s pedagogical approach to the school’s guiding statements. • Formalize a process of collecting and reviewing schoolwide student achievement data to inform and monitor school improvement.
