Overview Sustainable Development Goal #11 addresses on Sustainable Cities and Communities. MADRAS DAY creates a realisation and Sense of Belonging to this glorious city of 382 years, with a hoary past that dates back to the Paleolithic Age. The significance is that a group of Hominins seem to have settled around what is Pallavaram, some 1.5 million years ago. Hominins are pre-cursor species to Homo sapiens (that is us the humans) and the history here is one of the oldest found thus far outside of Africa. Near-intact clay coffin known as sarcophagus, recently excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is the proof of a megalithic culture in Pallavaram, about 2, 300 years ago, who were not nomads. Pallavaram (originally Pallava Puram) is considered to be one of the oldest inhabited places in South India. The present-day town of Pallavaram has its origins in the setllement of Pallavapuram which existed during the time of the 7th century Pallava king Mahendravarman I. The remains of a cave shrine constructed by the Pallava ruler have been found at the spot where an Islamic dargah now stands. The 1st reference to Mylapore can be found in the writings of Ptolemy, the Greek scholar who mentions the existence of the great port of Maillarpha, in 140 CE. It was the hometown of Thiruvalluvar, author of the ancient treatise Thirukkural, considered to be one of the finest works in Tamil literature. Peyalvar, one of the 12 Alvars (Vaishnava saints) was also born here. Between then and now, St. Thomas - the apostle of Christ, Fa Hien, Marco Polo, the Arabs, the Jews, the Mughals, the Portuguese, the Dutch, the Armenians, the British, the French, alongwith the Marathas, the Saurastrians, the Gujratis, the Marwaris, the east coast tradesmen, all settled between Ennore Creek and Adyar River in Thiruvotriyur, Chennaipatinam, Mylapore, Triplicane, Pallavaram, Poonamallee, and Egmore that existed in different forms before they melded into the expanding city of Madrasapatinam. Madras is certainly celebrated in its 382nd year, but certainly with an EYE ON THE FUTURE. We look into the future as SMART CITY CHENNAI, with a touch of the nostalgic past for CHANGE. Smart cities are Sustainable Cities for Sustainable Communities to help turnaround Global Warming and Climate Change too.
