WHAT IS THE COMPETITION FOR YOUNG MANAGERS? Madras Management Association has been organizing the Competition for Young Managers annually since 1996, with a view to recognize competitive excellence among young managers and by providing them an unparalleled opportunity to hone their analytical, creative thinking, problem solving, team working and leadership skills in a southern regional level competitive setting. The competition has continued to gain in strength and popularity year after year and corporate organizations have recognised its value as a useful tool to groom their young managerial talent for higher responsibilities. The Young Managers Competition today is one of the foremost and hugely popular Competitions meant exclusively for the young managers working in public and private sector organizations in business and industry. The competition brings disparate teams of young executives from the corporate world on a common platform to research, analyse, discuss and deliberate on a theme of contemporary managerial interest and national significance. The competition provides unique opportunities to young managers to demonstrate their knowledge, creativity, experience and professional prowess to become “Leaders of Tomorrow”. In the interest of health safety and in view of prevailing government norms, 24th Young Managers Competition is scheduled to be conducted online.

ABOUT THE THEME India’s Turning Point - Challenges & Opportunities India is at a decisive point in its journey towards prosperity and it is time to make the next time change in the pace of reform. In the economic crisis sparked by COVID 19 could spur actions that return the economy to a high growth track in the coming decade if a reform agenda can be implemented in the next 12 to 18 months. With the right measures now, India can raise productivity and incomes for workers, small, midsize, and large firms, keeping India in the ranks of the world's outperforming emerging economies. To capture frontier opportunities, it is believed that India needs to triple its number of large firms, with more than 1000 mid-size and 10,000 small companies scaling up. While the central government's pro-growth agenda is critical, active participation by state governments is equally important. Businesses would also need to commit to productivity growth, develop a long-term value creation, and develop capabilities in innovation, digital, automation and corporate governance. The good news is that there is no dearth of opportunity. However, to create these opportunities the governments need to adopt pro-growth reform agenda in product markets of critical sectors like manufacturing and construction, agriculture, retail, tourism etc., and in factor markets like capital, labour, land and power. Financial reforms would also be needed to ensure that sufficient capital is available. Over the past three decades, India has outpaced many other global economies propelling the country into the top five club. More recently, the push to reduce the multidimensional poverty by addressing basic needs holistically has also shown some progress. Jan dhan yojana, direct benefit transfer scheme, Aadhaar digital ID programme and introduction of the GST have marked some laudable milestones of formalising the economy. To sustain the momentum, labour intensive sectors such as trade, transportation and storage, hotels, communication and broadcasting, IT, Business Process Management, education, health care need to improve upon their deliverables while agriculture sector will need to increase productivity at its historical rate. The opportunities that exist cannot be exploited until supported by suitable reforms. More vibrant manufacturing and more vibrant economy will require more flexible labour markets. Though there has been some relief through the recently introduced labour code, India continues to place labour restrictions on manufacturing companies that seem to encourage firms to remain small, imposing high compliance costs on larger firms. Barriers to labour flexibility need to be removed by providing more freedom to manufacturing companies to shape the size, composition, and skills of the workforce, in line with evolving needs. Though India has made significant progress in the World Bank rankings for ease of doing business, Indian companies still face obstacles that crimp their effectiveness and limit their productivity. Difficulties in availability of land for business purpose, limited efficiency in export-import processes, duplication of compliances from both central and state authorities, lack of judicial capacity to enforce contracts, retrospective tax effects, tedious and slow processes to obtain permits are least attractive to foreign investors. To gain insights into how well is India poised to utilise this opportune moment, defined as “India's Turning Point” in overcoming the Challenges and grabbing the Opportunities, we invite you to a one-of-a-kind event, MMA Virtual Annual Convention on 26th February 2021. Over the course of three exceptional sessions and through conversations with several preeminent industry experts, we promise you a day of learning and participation that can help you not only survive in the current economic climate, but also to adapt to win. The journey to unlock value begins today.

KEY POINTERS TO PARTICIPANTS Many experts predicted the worst for India as we had to manage the largest population outside of China but today India stands out as a nation with one of the lowest infection and mortality rates. How do we make 2021 India's turning point? Evaluate: The economic growth in the last few decades and the impact of current slowdown need to be analysed to not based on superficial indicators but on fundamental strengths and weaknesses. For the last several years India's manufacturing was dependent on imports. Do we have the wherewithal to become a manufacturing hub and build an export oriented economy in the next few years? What should companies and the government do differently to make India a manufacturing hub? Introspect: One of the toughest lockdowns in the world resulted in a record slump of 23.9% in the first quarter of 2020 but the restart of economic activity in the festival season made most economists predict the economy to return to positive territory by fourth quarter. In a country with the world's third largest start-up ecosystem, the Production linked Incentive Scheme announced for 10 sectors, revising the MSME definition threshold upwards, rationalisation of labour laws and agricultural reforms are expected to set the stage. But is it enough? Surge Ahead: It is said that “Setback is the Set-up for a Comeback”. Indian Scientists worked hard and fast to come out with vaccines in record time. As we witness a paradigm shift of the world's view of China, and in the backdrop of a changing geopolitical situation, opportunities seem to emerge which India could explore and exploit to its advantage. However, it may not be a cake walk until India surges ahead with significant investment in capacity building. What should be the action plan?
