The Indian stock market has stopped surprising investors and institutions alike. There has never been a dull moment for the markets, whatever be the other predictions, projections and performance of the nation’s economy otherwise.
Gone are the days when the Government’s suggestions for the middle class too to invest in the stock market and reap the benefits in a big way used to be looked at with doubt and suspicion. It is now happening, by the hour, by the day. Not just the middle class but even those working in the unorganised sector have made additional incomes by short-term investments that range from a few hours to a few days and weeks. Unlike in the case of the long-term, big-ticket investors, both institutions and individuals, the small-time investor has its own cause for celebrations and concern about: What next?
But the small investor is not the real driving force, and he too has come to know it. There is however a greater knowledge and understanding of the market place across the board, beginning with the Covid era, what with stocks and economy magazines cropping up in almost every Indian language over the previous decade and more
What does it entail over the short, medium and long terms, both for the health of the stock market and of the economy as a whole? Is the economy driving the stock market or is it the other way round? Or, have both begun running on parallel lines, towards the same goal of growth and prosperity for the individual, institutions and the nation as a whole. And what is it indicative of the nation’s economy as a whole: Is it over-valued or what?
