On December 16, 1971, the Indian Armed Forces achieved a
stellar and historic victory over the Pakistan Army, leading
to the creation of Bangladesh and causing the largest
military surrender in conventional war after World War II.
To commemorate 50 years of the 1971 war and mark 2021
as ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’ (golden victory year), Prime
Minister Narendra Modi handed over the ‘victory flame’ to
the Indian Army. The victoy flame is being taken to all
corners of the country to commemorate the event.

PROFILE
Rear Admiral S Ram Sagar, AVSM, VrC, NM (Retd) is an elite Breguet Alize Pilot. Commissioned in the Indian Navy in 1959, he took part in the 1965 war and went on to command INS Vindhyagiri and INS Kunwar. During the 1971 war, Rear Admiral S Ram Sagar along with three more Alize aircrafts was instrumental in bombing the Chittagong air field, Dhaka harbour, Khulna and Chalna, preventing enemy operations and stalling their evacuation. The officer and his crew were awarded Veer Chakra during the war for their audacious and brave action.

PROFILE
Colonel A.Krishnaswami VrC, VSM and Bar is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (Kharakwasala) and the Indian Military Academy (Dehradun).
Commissioned in the JAK Rifles in 1958, he actively took part in the operations in the 1962 and 1965 wars. In the Indo-Pak War of 1971, the then Major A. Krishnaswami volunteered to lead a hazardous operation behind the enemy lines,
establishing
road
blocks,
springing
ambushes
and
preventing
the
enemy
reinforcements
from
reaching
Dacca. For his gallantry, Major Krishnaswami was awarded the Veer Chakra by the then President of India Shree V V Giri in 1972.
COL A KRISHNASWAMI Major Krishnaswami was promoted to the rank of Lt Colonel and commanded 1 JAK Rifles. He was decorated twice VrC, VSM**
with the Vishist Seva Medal and Bar. After 31 years in the Army, he retired as Director of NCC in the Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Andaman Directorate at Chennai.
PROFILE
Col Suresh Rajan is an alumnus of NDA and IMA. He was commissioned into Corps of Sig in 1968. Col Suresh Rajan was the Sparrow of the Arty Bde Sig Coy of HQ 54 Inf Div. During 1971 the officer physically laid the line communication under heavy fire and ensured uninterrupted communications throughout the operation. For his gallantry, Col Suresh Rajan was awarded the Sena Medal.

An All-India rank holder in IIT-JEE, he refused to join IITs and instead joined the National Defence Academy in 1982. A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College (Wellington - India), Centre for Defence & Strategic Studies, Canberra-Australia and National Defence College (New Delhi). Experienced in managing personnel and logistics of International Task Forces in Cambodia and Sierra Leone and handling short-term projects in forecasting and structuring of large coalitions, including significant civilian components at the UN Headquarters in New York.
