Synopsis Discussion on "Gaza Demystified" aims to provide a nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the Gaza Strip, a region that has often been shrouded in controversy and misunderstanding. The lecture would focus on the historical, political, social, and economic dimensions of Gaza, shedding light on its complex and multifaceted reality. The event will provide insights on: Historical Context: A brief overview of the historical events that have shaped Gaza, from ancient times to the present day, with a focus on its significance in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Geopolitical Situation: An examination of the geopolitical dynamics in the region, including the role of Israel, Egypt, and other regional players, and how these factors influence the situation in Gaza. Palestinian Identity: Exploring the unique identity of the people of Gaza, their cultural heritage, and the challenges they face in preserving their cultural and national identity. Humanitarian and Socioeconomic Challenges: Addressing the pressing humanitarian issues in Gaza, such as access to clean water, healthcare, and education, as well as the impact of the Israeli blockade on the daily lives of Gazans. Political Governance: Discussing the role of various Palestinian political factions and the internal divisions within Gaza, including the conflict between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. Media and Misconceptions: Analyzing how media portrayal and international perceptions of Gaza can contribute to misunderstandings and stereotypes, and the importance of responsible journalism in accurately representing the region. The objective of the Lecture "Gaza Demystified" seeks to provide a more informed and balanced perspective on Gaza, enabling the audience to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and challenges facing this region in the Middle East.

Dr Adrian Haack Director - India Office, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Dr disc. pol. Adrian Haack is director of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in New Delhi. Haack represents the foundation in India.Dr. Haack studied political science in Hanover and Warsaw and received his doctorate from University of Göttingen. He was supported by a scholarship and published a book on the European Union. In Germany‘s Army, Dr. Haack served in a battle tank unit in the First Division. Years later he took the oath of duty as an officer in the Navy reserve forces. In the CDU, Dr. Haack was involved as of the age of seventeen. In CDU‘s youth branch and the party itself he held numerous positions: He was the youngest member of the CDU executive board at state level and election candidate in 2021. Since 2015 he worked for the parliamentary group in the field of free trade and security policy. Most recently, he headed the CDU General Secretary‘s Bundestag staff for three years.

Air Marshal M Matheswaran, AVSM, VM, Ph.D (V) Chairman & President, The Peninsula Foundation Air Marshal M Matheswaran is an Indian Air Force veteran with 39 years of active service. He is the Founder-President of The Peninsula Foundation, a policy research think-tank based in Chennai. He is a fighter pilot, an Experimental Test Pilot, and a Fighter Combat Leader, and has flown over 40 types of aircraft. He is an alumnus of IAF’s prestigious institutions, ASTE and TACDE where he was Commandant and Deputy Commandant respectively. The Air Marshal is also a graduate of the Defence Services College, Wellington and the National Defence College, New Delhi. He has held various operational and command appointments that include Senior Air Staff Officer of Eastern Air Command, Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Space), Air Officer Commanding (Maritime Air Operations), Principal Director (Air Staff Acquisition) and Director of Ops at the Strategic Forces Command. The Air Marshal has a master’s in military science, M Phil, and PhD in Defence and Strategic Studies from the University of Madras. He also has a post graduate diploma if financial management. He has done a Senior Fellowship in National and International Security from the Harvard Kennedy School of Governance, Harvard university. He has been advisor to HAL, Cyient and also as President, Aerospace Business in Reliance Defence. He continues to be involved in strategic consultancy in Defence and Aerospace. The Air Marshal is a recipient of Presidential awards – AVSM (Ati Vishisht Seva medal) and VM (Vayu Sena Medal) – and Commendation by the Chief of Air Staff.

Mr Sashi Kumar Chairman, Asian College of Journalism Sashi Kumar is an Indian journalist and media personality from Kerala. He founded and chairs the Media Development Foundation, the not-for-profit public trust which set up and runs the Asian College of Journalism in Chennai. He was the first West Asia Correspondent of The Hindu in the mid eighties. He is currently the Chairman of Asian College of Journalism, Chennai. He completed his graduation from Loyola College, Chennai, and took post graduation in history from the Madras Christian College. Sashi Kumar started his career in Doordarshan (DD) as a Newsreader and Producer. Later he worked in PTI - TV as Chief Producer and General Manager of PTI. He authored and presented independent programs on the economy, politics and culture on Indian television like Money Matters, Tana Bana and Jan Manch. Sashi Kumar is a well known filmmaker as well. He scripted and directed Kaya Taran (Chrysalis) in Hindi based on the story Vanmarangal Veezhumbol (When Big Tree Falls) by writer N. S. Madhavan. The film won him the Aravindan Puraskaram as the best debut filmmaker of 2004. He also acted in many Malayalam movies.

Dr Stanly Johny International Affairs Editor, The Hindu Dr. Stanly Johny is the International Affairs Editor of The Hindu. In this capacity, he runs the international news pages of the newspaper and writes opinions and editorials on geopolitics, Middle East and Indian foreign policy, besides doing special reports. He earned a PhD in international studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He has reported for The Hindu group from Brussels, Luxembourg City, Moscow, Singapore, Amman, Ramallah and Tel Aviv. He has written research papers as well as commentaries for various publications, including Economic and Political Weekly, The Hindu, The Hindu Business Line, Frontline and Business Standard. Dr. Johny is also an adjunct faculty member at the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai. His first book, Baghdadi’s World is forthcoming from Penguin Random House.
