India’s water crisis is a ticking time bomb – some reckon that the country will be unable to meet half its water demand by 2030. Even today, Niti Aayog – the government thinktank, says that 600 million Indian face high to water stress. Cities across India struggle to provide sufficient potable water to households in the summer and in drought years And the heating climate will make this so much worse. Solving this problem seems a herculean task. But at Sundaram Climate Institute, we have found that India’s water, while variable and volatile, has common elements across geographies that make our lessons learnt from Madurai useful in water solutioning in other Indian cities What we need is detailed field data that improves our understanding of this complex and seemingly intractable problem. To do this, Sundaram Climate Institute researchers have spoken to thousands of people over the past few years to understand the crisis and come up with solutions that have been shown to work. In our first public report based on four of our studies, we reveal how deep and unequal the crisis is, how it will become far worse if we do nothing and what solutions are likely to work. Most importantly, our studies have shown us that the missing catalyst is the realization that each of us is responsible for building water resilience in our cities today, and we can only build it together.
