THE NEW MMA BUILDING

196

Foreword Madras Management Association is entering its 63rd Year on 16th July 2018. In all its 63 years, MMA has aggressively focused on propagating management movement in this part of the country. MMA strongly believes that the multitude of management issues and economic problems that we face today cannot be resolved unless we put an innovative management movement at the heart of change agenda. MMA has founded numerous initiatives since its inception in the year 1956. It began with the launch by 9 truly wise-men to grow to a 7,000 strong members today, established Business Leadership Awards, Annual Conventions, Women Managers Conventions, Management Students Conventions, Conclaves, Seminars and many more. Today, none of these achievements would have been possible without valued guidance, advise and support from members and well-wishers. MMA takes this opportunity to salute to all of you for your unflinching support. We are indeed overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the enthusiasm and generous contributions from the corporates for establishing the MMA Management Center. I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt and deep gratitude to Mr. Srivats Ram and Mr. Srinivasan K. Swamy and the entire MMA Building Committee for their unstinted support which enabled the establishment of a state-of-the-art Management Center for MMA. I would like to thank all my colleagues in the Managing Committee and the MMA Secretariat headed by Gp. Capt. R. Vijayakumar (Retd) VSM for their support. I value their thoughtful suggestions and the input. Thanks are also due to them and the past presidents of MMA for sharing this vision and initiatives and the pioneering effort to making of MMA Management Center a reality. This coffee table book is a pictorial presentation of MMA’s journey since 1956 and is humbly dedicated to all those who proudly were part of MMA’s journey for the last 63 years and laid the foundation, upon which the edifice of MMA was built. Kavitha D Chitturi

President

Madras Management Association

It has been rightly said, “Management is not an art and management is not a science - management is a practice.” Back in the days when the Madras Management Association was only a concept in the minds of the founding fathers, they conceived a road map which would take the association to where it is today. The best minds of business and industry in the state put their collective business minds together. Their knowledge, ability and instincts were needed to realize the dream of having an organization that would change the way the concept of ‘management’ was perceived in India. Today, MMA is a premier institute with several prominent businessmen and industrialist in its fold. The association conducts over 700 events annually along with its prestigious flagship events. Through seminars, workshops, flagship events, collaborative programs millions have benefited from the knowledge gained. But this was not how it was back in 1956.

Madras Management Association was founded on 16 July 1956 under its first President Dr. Sir A. Lakshmanaswamy Mudaliar, the illustrious Vice-Chancellor of Madras University. 6

THE SCENARIO In the early years post Independence, the Government of India focused on the development of indigenous science and technology. But management in the country was nowhere near our counterparts in the developed world. This atmosphere was widely common across the country, and Madras State was no exception. At the time of its formation in 1950, Madras State included the whole of present-day Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema, the Malabar region of North Kerala, and Bellary, South Canara and Udupi districts of Karnataka. Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema were separated to form Andhra State in 1953, while South Canara and Bellary districts were merged with Mysore State, and Malabar District with the State of Travancore-Cochin to form Kerala in 1956. In 1969, Madras State was renamed to Tamil Nadu. Companies then were of three kinds: managing agency houses (primarily British or Indian-run); aggressive multinationals; and first generation Indian entrepreneurs with no formally trained managers in top positions. The business organizations in the country were constrained due to lack of support mechanisms such as professional knowledge, technical expertise and talented managers.

The name was subsequently changed to Madras Management Association in 1966.

The Inception A set of visionaries from various industries in the state put their minds and commitment together. And thus was founded the Madras Institute of Management (MIM) on 16th July 1956 under the meritorious President Dr. A. Lakshmanaswamy Mudaliar, the illustrious Vice-Chancellor of Madras University. This humble beginning was destined to grow into the largest affiliate of the prestigious “All India Management Association” (AIMA), an apex body of professional management in the country.

Southern Council of Management Associations At a meeting held on 28th July 1956, it was decided to form a regional body of the Associations/Institutes in South India with the object of coordinating their activities and for mutual assistance by way of arranging lectures and also organizing conferences, seminars on a regional basis and bringing out publications. The rules of the Southern Council of Management Associations were finally approved only in April 1958. The founder members of this Council were the nine Management Associations in the four states of Andhra, Kerala, Madras and Mysore. The then President of the Madras Institute of Management was the Chairman of the Southern Council and Mr. J.M. Shrinagesh was its President.

All India Management Association Under the leadership of Shri T.T. Krishnamachari, the plan to start an All India Management Association (AIMA) was a process of growth from scratch and many institutes had to come together voluntarily to form this organization. The coordination of ideas and to show them as an integrated view both here and internationally was quite a challenge. The Madras Institute was very active in the formation of the All India Body. Preliminary discussions for the formation of an All India Body took place as far back as 23rd June 1956 at Bangalore and this was followed by a meeting on 5th August 1956 at Delhi. The Constitution of the AIMA was finally ratified at a meeting in Delhi on 3rd December 1957.

Productivity Project The Productivity Centre of the Ministry of Labour had a Productivity Project under the Institute for 10 weeks. The Project was inaugurated on 10th September 1957 by Dr. A. L. Mudaliar. The Project consisted of a Work Study Seminar, a Management Seminar, an Industrial Engineering Seminar, a Personnel Management Seminar, a Foremanship Seminar and a Labour Seminar. In total, over 300 participants attended the Project and it was the largest attendance seen by the Institute till then. Motivated by the successful conclusion of the Productivity Project, the Institute began to take active interest in the setting up of the Madras Productivity Council.

Going Global The Institute had developed close relationships with similar organizations in the country as well as from across the globe, like the American Management Association, British Institute of Management, Australian Institute of Management, New Zealand Institute of Management and many other eminent ones. The British Institute of Management asked about the possibility of the Madras Institute to invigilate for their external examinations at this time and this was agreed to. It would considerably help those from Madras and adjacent areas, some of whom earlier needed to go to places like Bombay. The experiment was a success and the MIM received the recognition of the British Institute for the first time. Shri K.P. Ramsami, the President was elected to the Fellowship of the British Institute of Management and he was the first Indian to receive such an honour.

A Firm Foundation The first four years of the institute saw it becoming the biggest of its kind in South India and set the platform for the spread of good management practices across the community. There were film shows held at the USIS Little Theatre on topics like “Automation – See it Now”. Conferences for various departments like sales, management, accounting and all the topics which could be covered began to take shape from the institute. Institutional strength kept growing steadily, which showed the confidence that the companies had for the importance and utility of the Institute. In 1960, the Hon’ble Union Minister of Industry, Shri Manubhai Shah was the Chief Guest at the Annual General Meeting. He noted the history of the Institute so far and acknowledged the role it had played in developing managerial talent and the necessary techniques. The Institute by now had secured a firm foundation and had a memorandum of its goals.

JOURNEY AHEAD During the times of the ‘management movement’ in the country, the MMA emerged as a dynamic and responsive organization. Businessmen and executives from Madras had travelled around the world. A Management Personnel Directory was made by the Association for the first time in the country. The Directory had the names of the executives and their designations, with their area of specialization.

MMA Award for Managerial Excellence (MAME) MMA has always promoted sound management knowledge, experience and ideas in various disciplines. With the objective of annually awarding excellence in managerial thinking, action and demonstrable results, MMA instituted this award in 2002. MAME awards are given in four categories: (i) Manufacturing, (ii) Services, (iii) Small and Medium Enterprises (SME), and (iv) Educational Institutions MAME Awards are given to companies/institutions who have excelled in their business segment and who have their corporate or registered office in any of the Southern States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. If MMA enjoys an all-India reputation, it is because it has stuck to its core mission of furthering the cause of managerial excellence. It has never deviated from this. If it had done so, it would have run the risk of becoming just another corporate lobby, and it would not have been what it is today. - A former President of Madras Management Association.
