HELLO RAINY SEASON MMAG.

This morning I was woken up by the sound of raindrops. The weather is now cooler and that makes it much more difficult to get out of my warm cosy bed. The feeling of a fresh breeze with the smell of the rain was very pleasant. The rainy season has now begun in Hua Hin. It’s a new season, a new start for many small creatures. Trees grow quicker and new leaves appear, it looks greener everywhere. M MAGAZINE is welcoming the rainy season with a new logo. In this issue we have added more content, which is designed with simplicity, great photography and interesting stories, ready to place on your coffee table for those relaxing moments. We hope that you will enjoy reading this new magazine as well as enjoying the fresh and fragrant breeze of the rainy season. Wishing you a pleasant read and a happy relaxing day! M MAGAZINE

Dine & Wine

DINE & WINE AT THE CENTARA GRAND BEACH RESORT

In March of this year, the Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villa’s Hua Hin held their 2nd exclusive Dine & Wine evening, this was held in conjunction with Siam Winery. It was to be a lavish 5 course dinner, consisting of Thai food and combining various wines. I was intrigued to know what wine would be available and what combination would best complement the choice of Thai food being prepared and served, which are mainly hot & spicy dishes, as well as the after dinner desserts. The evening commenced and we were warmly welcomed at the Salathai Restaurant, which is located within the Centara Resort. A welcome drink of fresh grape juice was served in an Elephantstyle glass to us, as we entered the staff then directed us to our table. The dining area was formed around the free-form swimming pool giving it a delightful setting to enjoy our evening. The evening got underway with Wine experts being introduced to us from the Siam Winery. During the evening they were always readily available to answer any questions and to give some much needed informative advice and knowledge on the various wines being served. While enjoying the food and wine, authentic Thai music was being played which created a lovely atmosphere. THE MENU. • Roasted Medallion of Phuket Lobster served with Monsoon Valley Sparkling Blanc de Blanc’s. • A Seafood Salad served with Monsoon Valley Colombard • Deep Fried Fish Mousse served with Monsoon Valley White Shiraz • Lamb Massaman Curry served with Monsoon Valley Shiraz • Traditional Sticky Rice & Fresh Mango served with Monsoon Valley (late harvest) Chenin Blance The combination of food and the accompanying wines were well selected and totally complemented the each other. The care taken over each course was clear to see, as was the taste with all the fresh ingredients used in the cooking. The dishes were of full flavour and not over spicy, which can be over-powering to taste for the European palate, yet managed to still be characteristically Thai. The dessert of Rice & Mango with its selected wine was simply amazing and completed the menu perfectly.

Herzlichen Dank, Familie Egli

During the course of the evening, entertainment was performed by a traditional Thai music band and dancers, which gave that finishing touch to a wonderful Exclusive Thai Dinner. Thank you Centara Beach Resort & Villas and Siam Winery for organizing this amazing night, I now know that a combination of Thai food and Thai wine is readily available here and to a very high standard. 08 MMAG. / MEET

ART OF SALT

The first ‘’Art of Salt Fair’’ was held from March 15th17th this year between Kilometre Posts 25 and 41 of Rural Development Highway No.2021 (scenic route) in Phetchaburi’s Ban Laem district, about 12 km. north of Chaam. Visitors had an opportunity to see sculptures made of salt, visit Ban Laem Salt Museum and shop for products and food from all over the district. The highlight of the event was a beautiful sculpture of “Bryde’s” whale that was created by a team of student’s from Rajabhat University, Phetchaburi. The event was aimed at creating educational activities based on travel experiences on the ‘’Salt Road’’ and promoting travel along the Klong Khone/ Bang Taboon/Ban Laem/Hat Chao/Cha-am highway.

BEACH POLO

The 4th annual “Asian Beach Polo Championship” was held on April 20th this year, at the beachfront of the Inter Continental Hua Hin Resort, where international polo players were competing for a trophy which would be presented by HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha. There were four Asian polo teams in the tournament coming from India, Hong Kong, Macau and host Thai team. The highlight of the tournament was the final of the competition between Thailand and Macau, with the host Thai team beating Macau 4-0 and winning the tournament. The tournament was also set to raise funds for the Kamlangjai Project, initiated by the Princess to provide support to help rehabilitate female prisoners after their release.

VISAKHA BUCHA DAY

VISAKHA BUCHA (Vesak) means the worshiping of the Buddha on the full moon day of the sixth lunar month, which falls on 24th May this year. It is one of the most important days in Buddhism because of three important incidents in the life of Buddha. The Birth. The Enlightenment and the Passing away, miraculously all fall on the same month and date, which we now call the Vesak, full moon day. Each year, Buddhists throughout the world gather together to worship and to recollect the wisdom, purity and compassion of the Buddha. When Visakha Bucha Day comes around each year, Buddhists all over the world celebrate this great day in commemorating his great loving, kindness and compassion to the world. Here are some aspects of the activities that are observed. The offering of foods to the monks and their novices. Listening to the Dhamma preaching, observing the Five Precepts or the Eight Precepts {depending on which ones they observe}. Practicing of Meditation. Attending the Candle Light Procession around the Buddha’s Shrines etc.

CHAT CHAI MARKET Chat Chai market is the oldest market in Hua Hin. The market was constructed in 1926 whilst the Klai Kang Won Palace was being built. There are seven semi-circle vaults on the top of the building to mark the construction that was during the reign of King Prajadhipok Rama VII. Chat Chai market is named after the royal lineage’s family name of the construction leader: His Royal Highness Prince Kampaengpetch Akrayothin. Conveniently located in the center of Hua Hin town, it is popular with both Thai and foreign visitors. A wide selection of fresh produce is available at the Hua Hin Chat Chai Market; fruits, vegetables, meat and probably the largest choice of fresh sea food, fish, crab, prawns, squid and mussels to be found anywhere in Hua Hin. There are also textile shops, many clothing and shoe stalls.

An Interveiw with

HUA HIN’ S

YOUNG TALENTED MUSICIAN It is very inspiring to see young people making an effort by looking after their talent. All too often when they have to fight the socio-economic challenges of today. Nothing pains me more than seeing the talent of the youth of today drowning in a sea of Alcohol and drugs. One such talented young woman is ... Thippawan Suppakittaworn, a 26-year-old who started playing music at a very young age and has been doing it ever since. The young woman taught music and sang in a bar to support her own education since the age of 20. She achieved a Bachelor of Education in Fine Art, majoring in Piano and graduated from Pechchaburi Rajabhat University. She currently works at Emerald Group Company. Besides her full-time job, she spends most of the time teaching music at her own music school, also performing music and singing with her band at a 5* resort and a restaurant in Hua Hin.

13 MMAG. / MANIFESTO

Q1: WHAT’S WAS YOUR INSPIRATION TO BE A MUSICIAN AND SINGER? Actually, my inspiration comes from both my mother and my dream. When my mother was young, she really wanted to play piano but she couldn’t afford it. Then it was my turn, I really like piano and wanted to follow my mother’s dream too. Starting to learn piano was so difficult, but later I fell in love with it. I always feel so happy when I play piano or even sing in front of an audience. All those things have inspired me to be a musician and singer. Q2: HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN A MUSICAL WORLD? After I graduated from high school, I chose to learn music particularly Piano and Violin in University. I collected money for my education by singing in the bar during the night times and was a piano teacher at the weekend. I actually did a lot of jobs which has given me great experience in life. Q3: IS ONE OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS A MUSICIAN OR SINGER? No one, I was so lucky to be born into a music loving family. They have always been prompt to support me in doing what l love most. They have never forced me to do anything which l do not wish to do.

14 MMAG. / MANIFESTO

Q4: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC INSTRUMENT AND WHY? I do love the piano but I also love to play violin because those musical instruments provide beautifully different tones. It depends upon how l am feeling that day, to which instrument that l play. 5: WHY DID YOU START YOUR OWN BUSINESS, “THE PERFORM MUSIC & DANCE STUDIO”?oney by music. I People always talk and think about making money by playing music. I disagreed with that idea, so that’s why I started to build my dream school, where small groups of students can enjoy playing music and communicating their ideas together. Q6: WHAT ARE THE ACTIVITIES AT THE PERFORM MUSIC & DANCE STUDIO? IS IT ONLY FOR KIDS? No it’s not only for kids, everyone is welcome. So, what do we do in our school? Firstly students can enjoy learning and practising music together. We also arrange a free learning group on Tuesday for students who don’t understand how to play or have any musical knowledge.

Q7: WHAT IS THE IMPORTANT THING FOR YOU THAT MAKE A GOOD MUSIC TEACHER? For kids, I find the best way is to inspire them and have more confidence to play and understand the principles of music. For Adults, I have to make them believe that they have trust in the teacher so that they can be taught well. I also make sure that there is a good relationship between the student’s parents and school. Q8: WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR STUDENT? I do expect them to love music as I do. Moreover I’d like them to use music to have peace of mind and to use music to make them a better person in life. Q9: WHY CHILDREN SHOULD LEARN ABOUT MUSIC? WHAT IS IMPORTANT FOR THEM? Music can be one of their best activities and able to improve their mind. If they become a professional musician, it will become their career. Q10: AS A YOUNG WOMAN, WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? The most difficult thing for me is engaging in a highly competitive business but I will do my best to archive my goal. Q11: WHAT IS YOUR AMBITION IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS? In the near future, I would love to have a small orchestra band and to increase the awareness of music lovers and musicians in and around Hua Hin. Apart from that I really want to be a volunteer music teacher for individuals who can’t afford to learn music in school.

Have you ever felt like this? While you are trying so hard to focus on your work right in front of you, your brain just suddenly stops functioning; your creative, chic idea, which normally flows very smooth, is just unexpectedly stuck somewhere you can’t find. JUST PAUSE yourself! Turn your face away from that laptop, grab one of your favorite pens and a notebook and just follow me this way….

BAAN YOO YEN Coffee House

HUAHIN COFFEE HOUSE @ YOO-YEN Huahin Coffee House is my today’s recommended place for spending sometime chilling out. Huahin Coffee House is a small but stylish coffee shop built in a period-wooden house with almost 100 yearof-age. The interior concept is vintage atmosphere in white. The House is filled up with rattan-made tables and chairs offering sense of comfort. Ceilinghanging rattan chairs, with a leisure and soft swing, are also available for you to have a cozy moment while sipping your cup of coffee, and facing yourself out to the coconut tree garden and the indigo blue sea. Positively, your artistic and imaginative notion must more or less start running once again. If you need some more reference or inspiration for your pending work or current project, bunch of trendy magazines are also in place for you to freely pick them up for a glance.

18 MMAG. / TO DO IN HUA HIN

Not only a cup of coffee, but the Huahin Coffee House also has its signature sponge cake with choices of favor, such as Thai tea favor with nice tea scent, Coconut favor with coconut meat and cream; Blueberry low fat cheese cake with a crust made of black Oreo. Besides cake, Japanese pudding is another dessert available in this Coffee House which is very popular and of which the savor is second to none. The shop location is easy to access. The shop is located in the same area as Yoo-Yen restaurant. Huahin Coffee House is normally opened from 11am – 9pm during weekdays and 10am-10pm on weekend while Yoo-Yen is normally opened only for dinner. If you use Petchakasem road, you just take turn to Soi Huahin 51 (Tok Road). Then, keep going straight to the junction and turn left to Naabkehas Road, go straight a bit further and the restaurant is just right there, Yoo-Yen restaurant. The restaurant also provides parking space for any customers who drive their own cars.

WILAIWAN Hua Hin

WILAIWAN HUAHIN Wilaiwan Huahin is another chill-out coffee shop recommended. Wilaiwan serves coffee and signature daily fresh home-made bakery as well as various international dishes. Wilaiwan is opened daily from 9am to 9 pm except Sunday on which the shop will be closed at 7pm. The shop location is easy to access as well. It’s located opposite to Cicada market or Suan Sri. The shop is decorated in American cottage style with blue and pastel tone to create home and comfortable feeling. The interior is set in white tone to create sense of fresh and bright. Soft sofa and pillows are there for you to park yourself and relax.

Sipping coffee and having some sweets not only help to boost up but also to refresh you. Creative or fancy idea you have been entire day looking for might swiftly reveal itself. Don’t forget to jot them down real quick as the decent idea always popped up surprisingly with no clue. But if you unfortunately still unable to figure out your puzzle, at least you have got chance to take some time to relax yourself. Having some nice sweets could more or less cheer you up and gain back energy to get your work done.

The must menus for Wilaiwan are Fresh orange chiffon, made from a special no-butter recipe, with soft texture and nice milky scent; and Tender chocolate cake. If you don’t feel like coffee today,

TO-DO in CHA-AM Cha-am is a quiet beach retreat in Petchaburi Province, located less than 200 km to the south of Bangkok and 20 km north of Hua Hin. Thanks to its proximity to Hua Hin, Cha-am slowly developed into a tourist destination, though a far quieter one than its popular neighbour to the south. While it is relatively quiet, Cha-am still offers visitors a number of beach activities, such as jet skiing and banana boat riding, and the seafood is as readily available and inexpensive as any beach town in Thailand. For a little local character, visitors can travel north to a quaint fishing village that includes a harbour full of fishing boats and a number of seafood restaurants. Apart from beach activities, there are more interesting places to see and explore around Cha-am. The best way to get around town is by bicycle. You can rent a bicycle locally and getting around town on your own or by taking a bicycle tour with a group of experienced cyclists, or with certified guides, who will show you more unseen places which are off the beaten track. This is highly recommended for visitors who wish to see the daily way of life and Thai culture, to take up this opportunity.

TACOS AND MARGARITAS An authentic Mexican Restaurant in Hua Hin At the rear section of Hua Hin Grand Night Plaza Market is a place where you can find a small Mexican restaurant. It runs by a Mexican owner, Mr. Hugo Delgado, who first came to Thailand as an English teacher. He decided to open an authentic Mexican restaurant with his cousin. The first restaurant of the two Mexicans, Margaritas, was very well known as the best authentic Mexican restaurant in town. Unfortunately, it has to be closed due to reasons out of their control. Taco’s and Margaritas has a different concept that tries to mimic Authentic Mexican Street Food; homemade food, quick, easy, low price and good value. The wooden red and green table sets give tints of Mexican flag and stand out of their surrounding. The place is small and has only 15 seats. There is enough space between tables so it is comfortable to enjoy food and drink in an open-air area. It is also an ideal dining place for people who need a quick meal just before or after shopping at the market. In this section of the market is decorated with some old stuff, plant, flowers and lighting that make the place even more gorgeous.

As its heart, Mexican food is pretty rustic homemade fare and most of ingredients come from local. The menu is small and easy and the prices are affordable but while guaranteeing a true taste of Mexican. The salsas are made fresh, the tortillas are done daily. With your first bite, probably into a homemade corn tortilla chip dipped in guacamole. The avocado is creamy goodness, the onion’s flavours fresh and crisp, the coriander sharp and bright and it’s all well seasoned with just enough lime and cumin. The burrito is serving in the good portion and full-flavoured in a lovely basket. The Quesalida is one of recommended dishes by the owner. Besides the delicious food, you would have enough choices of drinks and three different kinds of margaritas. Overall service is generally admirable. Are you ready for

a NIGHT OUT in Hua Hin?

Nightlife in Hua Hin is less chaotic than other big cities in Thailand. The wild nightlife couldn’t be expected. The ambiance is easy-going and relaxing. The night here can be passed by sitting back, listening to music, drinking beer and socializing. Hua Hin is known as a destination for families or those who prefer rustic and peaceful vacation. Therefore, it tends to cater those who are seeking a quiet and laid-back night, sipping a cocktail or beer, having a chat with friends and family or a little dancing to get the night a little more energetic. Some places also feature live music. Sport bars with pool tables or with big TV screens and Irish pubs can also be found. There are a few discos around town, but the better ones seem to cater more towards young Thais and could be very crowded at the weekend. Some hotels offer chic and more sophisticated night out.

LA BIRRA Just opened for one year and a half years but grow up very fast and now “La Birra” is one of the most popular places to hang out of Hua Hin. La Birra is founded by a beer lover, Khun Tum, who has been collecting beers from all over the world and wants to introduce all the beers he has tried and loved with the concept that La Birra would be the place that offers the hugest selection of beers for the customers. That’s why the place is called “La Birra” which means ‘beer’ in Italian language. Located in Khao Takiab area, opposite Cicada Market, the building is a modern craft collection style, which has high ceiling and many open spaces. Step inside you would find lots of collecting items on the shelves and wall. Everyday except Tuesday live music would perform from 9.30 p.m.; starting with jazzy and easy listening music and getting more dance rhythm later in the night.

The most crowded night would be on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Main visitors are first jobbers and young professionals from Bangkok and Hua Hin area, as well as tourists drawn from Cicada Market and a small number of foreigners. Apart from a huge selection covering over 100 kinds of beers from around the world such as Hoegaarden (Belgian), Kwak (Belgian), Wasteiner pils (German), Bavaria (Dutch), the selections of premium wine, cocktails, Thai-European fusion food, Pizza and Tapas are also served. Try their tender chicken with fresh lime sauce and Tuna steak with pesto dressing. The presentation is very beautiful as its taste. KOH CHAN with Hua Hin’s photographers TEXT & PHOTOS: Golf Jutamas UNDERWATER PHOTOS: Krichsura Kotruro ENGLISH TRANSCRIPT EDITOR: Richard Campbell

Being a member of The Hua Hin Photos Club, I have an opportunity to get to know many photographers, both professionals and amateurs who reside in the Hua Hin area. We share a common interest and like to pass on our own knowledge, experiences and show our works by using the social media. Furthermore, the club also regularly organizes photo trips to different places. The most recent of which was a 2 day trip, which took us from Hua Hin to Prachuap Khiri Khan. There we went snorkelling at Koh Chan, relaxed and enjoyed a pleasant Thai lunch at Aao Manoa Beach, walked in the sea to a small local island and visited a unique Thai temple. We met with a local coconut farmer and watched the sunset at a lotus swamp. However, was not without danger, when 4 of our club members where stung by wasps, luckily all were able to get to hospital in time where they received anti allergic medication and had no further reactions to the wasp stings. A special mention and a big thank you to our host photographer, DJ Oat, who not only showed us many unseen photogenic places in the area but was a huge help to us in that awful situation. The photo trip began early in the morning. We left Hua Hin at 5.00 a.m. and went south by a minivan to Wanakorn National Park, Klong Waarn, Prachuap Khiri Khan. After one and half hours traveling from Hua Hin, we finally reached our destination at the National Park. As it was still dark when we left Hua Hin, it was not until we got nearer to the park, that we could finally see any of the surrounding scenery. As the sun rose high we could now see coconut fields on both sides of the road, to our right was a majestic landscape of beautiful mountains and lush valleys which border the barrier between Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand. About 7a.m having arrived safely we made our way onto the beach area at the Wanakorn National Park, and prepared ourselves for snorkelling. Our group leader and trip organizer, Krichsura Kotruro (Nohng) had planned and had previously arranged the trip with the Park’s staff in advance, so a big thank you. Having got our snorkelling equipment, lunch boxes and drinks together, we stepped into the speedboat and headed towards the outlying island a short distance away.

The beach at Koh Chan was stunningly beautiful, with crystal clear water. Close to this island is another called Koh Thaisi, both being protected bird sanctuary zones. However, remaining at the beach is permitted but venturing into the island is not. But that said, the spectacular views we were able to see from our location were truly beautiful and a photogenic examination of our skills to fully show and justify the brilliance of this small island. In fact l soon forgot about the snorkelling and continued to concentrate upon this opportunity to take more and more photos. I would like to come back again and if possible at the same time of the day, early morning or late afternoon when it’s the best time for taking seascape photos; the low angle of the sun draws out the shadows and reveals wonderful textures on the rocks. It is also allows you longer exposure time than during daylight and with this longer exposure you can bring out your creativity to the maximum so that you can fully justify the beauty of these islands in your pictures. If your love is snorkelling, then you can’t miss this. At Koh Chan, you can safely snorkel from the beach and it’s not far for you to swim before you see colourful fishes, corals and many of the magnificent sea anemones (Heteractis magnifica); which look like a flower and have a bright purple colour. This area is the closest to Hua Hin, where you can snorkel and see the beautiful Gulf of Thailand in all its glory underwater. We had a wonderful lunch on the beach followed by some relaxation, before we headed back to the mainland and our next stop, Ao Manao …The story continues in our next issue.

WANAKORN NATIONAL PARK DETAILS: Is located 23 km from Prachuap Khiri Khan, a 38sq km park centred on a beautiful 7 km pine fringed beach. Camping is permitted. Snorkelling around the offshore islands, swimming, hiking and bird watching are among its major attractions. Admission is 200 baht per person. Accommodation facilities are available. ADDRESS Mu 7 Tambon Huai Yang, Amphoe Thap Sakae, Prachuap Khiri Khan Tel. 0 3264 6290, 0 3261 9030 Website: www.dnp.go.th/parkreserve/asp/style1/accommodation.asp HOW TO GET THERE? By Car: Drive along Soi 4, Petchakasem, from Bangkok to Prachub Kirikant, about 345 km, to Amphoe Tam Skare not far from Prachuap Khiri Khan Province about 23 km. By Train: You can take a train at Wang Duan station or Huay Yang and then get a car or a motorcycle taxi. By bus: Take a normal bus from Bangkok to this national park which costs you about 150 baht or by an air-conditioned bus which costs about 210 baht.

TIPS FOR TAKING PHOTO UNDER WATER 1. Choose your photo gear wisely and know how to care and secure your gear underwater. 2. Find the right depth and light combination for your subject. Shallow depths and bright sunlight can produce beautiful images in a colourful coral garden or even contrasting against a sandy bottom. 3. Consider the background when shooting reef fish. It’s easier to shoot fish that contrast with their background than to capture well-camouflaged subjects. 4. Get as close to your subject as possible. Many reef fish look more beautiful at close range, and you may get greater saturation of their intricate colour details. Use your camera’s zoom feature when necessary (try not to over use). 5. Don’t forget your sun block. 35 MMAG. / MARINE - UNSEEN TRAVEL

BALI The ISLAND of GODs TEXT: Sasikarn Tangbunterm

In this issue, we will be seeing one of very well known Southeast Asian isles – Bali. This scenic isle is situated in Denpasar of Indonesia. We can take a direct flight from Bangkok to Bali. Cheap flights are presently offered by several airlines. The flight typically takes around 5 hours. Don’t forget to look outside when you are about to land, as you would see picturesque coastlines and volcanoes. If you would like to set the time on your watch, the local time in Bali is one hour ahead of Bangkok. For travelling in Bali, we would rather recommend renting a car, as public transit on the isle is not that convenient. For those who hate reading maps and are not familiar with the routes, there are hire cab services that would take us to the places indicated on our travelling programs. Don’t forget to contact them in advance, as it is much cheaper than hiring them once you are already there. More importantly, Bali is very conservative. If you would like to enter their tourist sites, you have to follow their specified dress codes. Gentlemen, please wear long-length pants; short or mid-length ones are not allowed. For ladies, please bring along your long-length skirts. If you hire a cab, they normally prepare some for you. But if you don’t like bringing them along, there are clothing rental services offered in front of every tourist sites. The tourists normally visit Ubud and Kuta. Ubud is a historical town where there are plenty of heritage sites, as well as historic, cultural and civilization sites. Unlike, Ubud, Kuta is a coastal town, where people could enjoy surfing.

36 MMAG. / TRAVEL ASIA

First, we recommend a visit to Pura Ulu Watu or Ula Watu Temple. The word ‘Pura’ means temple in Indonesian. The temple is situated on the cliff. We can clearly see scenic Bali landscape from up there. This perhaps is the most beautiful viewpoint on the isle. If you would like to visit the temple, we suggest going there in the afternoon. You can relish exquisite temple’s architecture before reveling in unforgettable sunset. Be careful of monkeys in the temple. Always hold your bags close and put away your hats and sunglasses; otherwise the monkeys could grasp your belongings and take them away. However, you can get your stuff back from the monkeys by trading them with bananas or some snacks. Another view point we would like to recommend has Baturr lake and Gunung Batur volcano as its back scene. It lies in the village of Kintamenee, which is located on a crater rim of Gunung Batur volcano. Lunch buffet there is truly enjoyable. You cannot miss their satay dishes – chicken satay, pork satay and beef satay. Bali might be the only place in Indonesia where you can find pork dishes. As majority of Indonesians are Muslim, pork dishes are extremely hard to find elsewhere in the country; except in Bali, where people are Hindu. If you would like to enjoy some exquisite architecture, we recommend a visit to Pura Besakih. Pura Be is the most notable and the most majestic Hindu temple on Bali. Having Gunung Agung volcano as its back scene, Pura Besakih is surrounded by 23 temples of different sizes. Tirta Empul or Holy Water Temple is also rich in Balinese beauty. There is a holy fountain, which is believed that blessings would be bestowed upon those who bathed with fountain water. Before bathing, we have to perform worship for a deity at the altar first.

If you are planning to visit Bali during the summer, don’t forget to mark your schedule for some sunny days. There are pods of dolphins at Lovina Beach. Bali is very rich in beautiful archaic architecture, costumes, and local culture. They are all finely blended in contemporary world and scenic nature. Besides the places we have seen in this issue, there are a lot more to see on this isle. See you next issue!

PHOTO: google.com

PHOTO: google.com

Tanah Lot temple, which is located on a coastline, is also very famous. During sea level rise hours, it seems like the temple is in the middle of the sea. While the sea level goes down, we can also walk to the temple.

BEST BALI ETIQUETTE TIP: Dress modestly before entering a temple in Bali. Temple guests are expected to wear shirts that cover shoulders and part of the upper arms. The waist and legs should be covered by a temple scarf (known as a selendang) and a sarong (known locally as kain kamben) respectively.

BRUGES TEXT : Sasikarn Tangbunterm

Are you kind of person who is fond of architectures but feel sick of being in a crowd? photo by Toerisme Brugge - Jan Darthet

If you fall into such category, the city named Bruges is the place we would like to introduce to you. Bruges is a small city in Belgium which is located not so far from Brussels, the capital city. It is not only the peaceful with greenery view city but it is also the city where a lot of architectures are sited. So, besides Brussels, Bruges is another very interesting city. Tourists might find it’s not too difficult to get to Bruges. For us, we started from Brussels Nord station (Nord=North) because it took only 10 minutes by foot from our hotel to this station. But, if you would like to start from Brussels Central or Brussels Midi (Midi=South), you can take subway to the station. Train ticket to Bruges can be purchased at the interchange station for 26.5 Euro. You should ask for the train schedule and also the platform where you will get on the train. On the train, you can select any seat upon your wish. It normally takes only 1 hour to get to Bruges but don’t forget to check the station if it’s really the one before you jump off as the train normally stops at various stations before reaching the destination. When you arrive, you should check the schedule of the return train, therefore, you will be able to plan what time you are going to catch a train to go back. However, if you totally fall for Bruges and want to spend overnight, a lot of lovely but cheap price hotel can be your options for a few days. Bruges is also known as Venice of the North Europe where there are a lot of canals cutting through the city. It was also registered by UNESCO as a World Heritage. In the past, Bruges was the seaport city. The city was once occupied by rich merchants. Due to the natural disaster, the canal connecting to the sea started getting shallow and the merchandising ship could not get into the port as a result.

However, Bruges people change to use the port of other cities nearby to do the commercial for their living. Up to century 14-15, political problems, inequality, city chaos and governing revolution caused the commercial in Bruges sluggish. In 1850, Bruges became one of the poorest cities. In 19th Century, Bruges has become a popular city among tourists as it locates a lot of historical places and museums.

TOP THINGS TO DO IN BRUGES Eat chocolate

Belgium and chocolate go together, make your mission to tour the shops, tasting the delicacies along the way. For truly adventurous chocoholics, stop by The Chocolate Line, they’ll surprise you with their chocolate inventiveness

Ride the canals

It’s the best way to step back in time and learn the history of Bruges. The views along the way: ornate medieval buildings, quaint gardens and vine covered bridges, all warmly presented and in pristine condition.

Shop the market at Burg Square

Grab some of the local delicacies, there’s everything from fresh produce, cheese and pastries. Then head over to Koningin Astrid Park for a leisurely picnic with the swans.

Hike up to the old windmills

On the perimeter of town, along the canal that circles the old section of Bruges, are four restored windmills. It’s fun to climb up to the top and take in the views of the city.

Load the toppings on a Belgian waffle

There are many shops along the main streets and in the squares, where you can indulge al fresco; or make a meal out of one at a cafe or restaurant. Either way, experiment with the topping choices which include fresh whipped cream, chocolate sauce, ice cream and fresh fruit. Pile them on for the ultimate taste sensation.

Kuiburi National Park TEXT & PHOTOS: Arut Hoimook & Yolsapol Na Nakorn ENGLISH TRANSCRIPT EDITOR: Richard Campbell

Kuiburi National Park is a real home for fascinating large mammal, Elephants. It was late afternoon, as I drove south from Hua Hin to the Kuiburi National Park. I had heard that it is home to one of the largest groups of wild elephants within Southeast Asia. There are more than 230 elephants to be found here. Apart from visiting either Africa or India, on a wildlife safari, then Kuiburi National Park is great place to visit when in Thailand, where you can easily see elephants feed a short distance from you. After a one and an half hour drive, I finally made my destination at Baan Ruam Thai. The village is located in a valley near to Tenasserim Mountain; here is where the majestic beauty of nature is met by the warm glowing smiles of the local villagers. 42 MMAG. / MOUNTAIN

I met a volunteer guide, May, who was a worker in a pineapple plantation and later became a volunteer guide who takes tourists to see wildlife in the park. She told me that over the years, between 1996-2000 there has been a massive conflict of interests between the Human and the Elephant. In respect of the development of large pineapple plantations and the continued encroachment of natural habitat for the Elephants and the regular crop raiding by the animals. However the problem now appears to have been resolved by a successful project instigated by His Majesty: namely “Conservation and Restoration of Kuiburi Forest”.

After we had finished here, we drove a short distance not far from the Ranger Station; here there was a viewing point where you could see more Elephants and Guars. The location was wonderful with wide open expanses of green fields and mountain ranges. Oriental-pied hornbills were on the trees around us and made a lot noise. Oriental pied hornbill is one four-hornbill species in Thailand. Owing to their speed it was not possible to take any photos but we will be back.

May and I went to the park by changing from a normal car to a 4WD truck with a young park ranger as our driver. We saw a large elephant herd on the way to Pa-Yang Ranger Station. There were about 14 elephants including calves, just meandering along. In general the oldest females in the herd, called “Matriarchs” will lead the family. Other young female elephants will often assist their mothers with calf care in the herd.

The sun was now starting to coming down and Egret birds were flying home. It was time to leave the park. Let the Elephants and other animals spend the night in peace to feed .We hope to see you soon my Elephant friends……………..!

Do they like to swim? And how much do they eat? Of course, they spend hours swimming and playing, throwing dust over themselves, in order to protect their skin from small insects and acting as a sunscreen from hot sun. They sometime sucked the water from Park ranger station’s tank during the night, the park ranger said. Elephants consume grass, leaves and may eat up to 300 kg per day, coupled with a high volume of water during the day.

GETTING TO KUIBURI NATIONAL PARK

The park ranger told us that wildlife researchers and photographers put tiny camera platforms on the trees to study behaviour and identify individual elephants in the park. It is now recognized that the elephant’s behaviour seems to be changed from what it once was.

We waited for a few hours but sadly, there was nothing coming into the feed.

Travel by yourself: Drive south of HuaHin along Petchkasem Road (Road No. 4) turn right at Yangchom junction. Go straight ahead for 27 km. to Baan Ruam Thai and then to Park ranger checkpoint. Renting a 4WD truck with a volunteer guide will cost 850 THB. Telephone: 085-2907436 Admission fee will cost 200 THB / person Travel by tour: Adventure-is provides one day package excursion with English speaking guide. KHAO TAO

a peaceful place to live in Hua Hin

Khao Tao is getting more popular both for vacation and living. It is a quiet and charming area, located 13 km south of Hua Hin. The village still keeps its profile as a peaceful fishing village, surrounded by beautiful nature and many interesting tourist attractions. It is a small seaside village for those seeking an easy-going and rustic weekend experience and the hospitality of Thai fishing village life. Do not confuse it with the diving island of Koh Tao, which is far away south of Hua Hin and off Chumphon. Khao Tao Lake was the first reservoir in Thailand, developed as a Royal Project. One of His Majesty the King’s earliest projects, The Hat Sai Yai Farm, set up in 1965 on a plot of His Majesty the King’s own land. It is an experimental farm that tried out different ways of raising livestock and cashew-nut trees, on arid, sandy soil. The offsring of the cattle, pigs, goats, sheep and poultry bred at the farm are distributed to nearby farmers. The Farm is important, as its purpose is to find a link between the right combination of water and fertilizers in order to grow crops under such poor conditions. The ability to grow kitchen garden crops and field plants, such as pineapple, corn and mulberry bushes is obviously a good example and encouragement for farmers. Her Majesty the Queen, who bought land at Khao Tao village, in order to restore the soil, initated Hat Sai Yai Forest Park in 1983. A Breeding and Propagation of Wildlife Project began in Hat Sai Yai Forest Park and the area was set up for breeding wildlife.

Khao Tao Beach and Hat Sai Noi Beach are two famous beaches in this area and those are wonderful secluded beaches and exceptionally clean. Khao Tao Beach is similar to Suan Son Beach but much more quiet. As with most beaches in this area, it’s very calm and the water is shallow a long way out from shore. It is suited to relaxing, walking and cycling and other sport activities on the beach. Sai Noi Beach is a small and secluded spot. Most people just visit Sai Noi Beach to unwind and soak up the relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. It is very small compared with the others, but it’s perhaps the nicest one where you can experience a quiet, uninterrupted day without having to do much. The sand is fine and deep, and the beach declines sharply so it’s ideal for swimming, as you don’t have to venture far from the shore. The beach lies in a small cove with rocks either side, so the sea views are quite limited but pleasant.

46 MMAG. / MONOCLES

From Hat Sai Noi beach you can see two small islands: Ko Singto (lion island) and Ko Tao (turtle island). The villager’s main occupations are fishing and pineapple farming. Khao Tao got its name from a hill and a turtle-shaped rock (Tao means Turtle), which goes into the sea. Apart from the delightful little bay and beach at Hat Sai Noi, Khao Tao also has an impressive temple complex with several caves, Big Buddha statue on the top of the mountain, shrines, fishing village, fresh water lake and lookouts. There are also many small restaurants along the street and some on the beach. The food is mainly Thai with some European options. For small shopping, it is very easy to reach convenience stores such as 7-Eleven, FamilyMart and local stores.

Khao Tao has recently become well known as a nice new quiet vacation spot and a nice place to live of Hua Hin. There are many new condominiums and housing developments in the area and small plots of land at a reasonable price is getting more difficult to find. However, there are some housing developments that offer a reasonable price of land and house with financing plan up to 100%. Apart of well-known beachfront condominiums, there are many beautiful pool villa projects, which is more suitable for people who want to have more living space and privacy.

BUYING THE RIGHT INSURANCE POLICY AT THE RIGHT PRICE STORY: Matthieu Heijlingenberg

Building, contents, motor, healthcare; four types of insurance you really cannot afford to live without. In each case, the same basic principles apply: make the most of a competitive market by visiting a broker who can offer a wide range of products from many different companies. This is the easiest way to find an insurance that really suits your needs. What are the key factors to be aware of with each kind of insurance, and how can you save money when you come to buy? For this issue, we will provide you more information about Health Care Insurance in Thailand.

HEALTH CARE INSURANCE

In case of an emigration or a long stay in Thailand, in most cases you are no longer entitled to the basic health insurance of your country of origin. This means that you will have to take care of a decent health insurance by yourself. For anyone who is searching or orientating, some general explanation and points of interest are listed below:

TYPES OF INSURANCE

In Thailand, there are two types of insurance available: insurance policies that cover almost everything for 100% and the so-called limited insurances. In For the later type, there is limitation on almost everything. With this category, there is always a risk that you may end up paying a (substantial) part of the hospital bill by yourself.

LIFETIME RENEWABILITY OF INSURANCE

This is an important factor if you plan to stay in Thailand for the rest of your life. For this case, make sure that the company guarantees lifetime renewability.

INPATIENT AND OUTPATIENT

Most companies offer opportunities to choose whether you would like to insure yourself for inpatient only, or also for outpatient. Inpatient (hospitalisation only) is a term that is used in case you’re hospitalized. Insure for inpatient only thus implies that outpatient (the regular doctor visits and the prescribed medication) have to be paid by yourself. Most people choose only to insure for inpatient, as outpatient is relatively inexpensive and therefore easy to pay by your self. However, the hospitals know how the system works and cooperate to make it inpatient as soon as something more expensive needs to be done. Every company uses a different

48 MMAG. / MONEY

definition for inpatient, so it does not always mean you have to stay overnight. Sometimes it’s sufficient if you are assigned a bed for a short period of time, or if you are at least X hours in the hospital.

PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS

Pre-existing conditions might be excluded when you apply for an insurance plan. Some companies can be very strict with this and always exclude pre-existing conditions; others are more flexible and accept them.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION

For almost all companies a medical examination over the age of 60 is mandatory. This examination can be very extensive for some companies, whereas others require a small examination.

DEDUCTIBLE

At some companies it is possible to take a deductible and thus lower the premium. This might be interesting if the “win back time” is not too long. Note - however whether this is per year or per illness / accident; a substantial difference. A Thai company or company from abroad In general, both Thai and European companies offer good packages. The best choice depends entirely on your personal circumstances such as age, family composition and health.

WAITING PERIODS

At some companies you will be insured from day one. Other companies have waiting periods for 30 days for all diseases and often work with a standard list of more serious conditions that are subject to a waiting period of 120 or 180 days. Examples of these conditions are cancer, hernia, etc.

Q&A DO I HAVE TO PAY IN ADVANCE WHEN I’M HOSPITALIZED?

It depends in general; Thai companies work with contracted hospitals in Thailand. They usually have a wide range of hospitals on their lists; so, there is always a hospital of your choice available. You generally don’t have to pay in advance when you go to a contracted hospital. With most European companies you have total freedom in your hospital choice and usually they pay the hospital directly when it gets more expensive (e.g. more than 24 hours hospitalisation).

TILL WHAT AGE CAN I APPLY?

Almost every company specify an age limit that is eligible to apply. The younger you start, the more choice you would have. Applying at an age of over 70 years old is still possible, but only more expensive plans would be available and there would be a big risk that you would be excluded.

WILL THERE BE COVERAGE ABROAD?

If you know that you travel frequently outside of Thailand, please inform us in advance. Some companies provide full coverage abroad, others limited. Isn’t it better to be insured in my own country? Many European countries offer a very good compulsory health care insurance. However, it is not always possible to stay in it when you move abroad. Always check this if you would like to stay insured in your state scheme.

IS THE INSURANCE GETTING MORE EXPENSIVE WITH AGE? Yes. In general, the premiums go up in age brack ets of 5 years. Some stays affordable at higher ages, but with some the premiums can besky high while getting older.

SHOULD I READ THE GENERAL CONDITIONS?

Yes! Not nice reading material but oh so important. A broker can tell you the main features, but it is impossible to discuss all the details while there might be some conditions that hardly apply to anyone but is very important to your personal circumstances.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HONESTLY FILLING OUT THE APPLICATION FORM:

When applying for a health care insurance, you always have to fill out an application form. A medical questionnaire is included. Many times Clients frequently ask us if it is not better to leave something out on the medical questionnaire. It is very important that you always answer the questions in all honesty. After all, it is better to be insured with exclusions than fill false information in an application form. Moreover, every insurance company reserves the rights to do so when you fail to fill in vital information. What is the best option for you depends entirely on your personal circumstances. A good health care insurance is always tailor-made.
