The 12th King’s Cup Elephant Polo 28th August - 1st September 2013

The King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament is known as one of Thailand’s most unique sporting events and one of the highlights in Hua Hin’s social calendar. This year, sixteen teams compete for this prestigious title with 51 elephants being involved. Elephant Polo is similar to the standard game of Polo but with certain interesting variants - each team is made up of three players. They ride on the elephants back and carry a mahout (elephant trainer), they use a two metre long mallet to hit a standard sized polo ball over a pitch that is 100 metres by 60 metres, and if you happen to be a lady playing, you can use two hands to handle the mallet. The event has caused much controversy on whether it is justified to do this and is it right for the elephant. The organiser gives the following statement: “The welfare of the elephants participating in the polo tournament, is paramount, with strict rules in place to ensure that the pachyderms are well cared for at all times. Thanks to Thailand’s advanced micro-chipping program for all legal domesticated elephants and research into DNA tagging, by imposing a “no micro chip, no game” rule, Anantara guarantees that all elephants who play have been domestically bred and not captured from the wild or smuggled in from neighbouring countries. The chosen elephants must be young, preferably under 20 and still at an age where they will thoroughly enjoy the sport, but large enough to carry a player with ease.” However everybody has his/her own reasons to be here and to form his/ her own judgement. Anyway, Elephant Polo does produce spectacular images. 08 MMAG. / MEET

Most of the food was prepared and cooked fresh at the stalls. Some hotels and restaurants created a very nice atmosphere by decorating the outer areas, with seating available in an open-air enviouroment. Apart from tasting the wonderful signature dishes from famous restaurants and hotels in Hua Hin, there were also OTOP products available for purchase.

How does Hydrogen help your body?

A molecule of water “H2O”, consists of one atom of oxygen bound to two atoms of hydrogen. In our bodies, hydrogen functions as an antioxidant, helping to prevent cell damage and inflammation, protect DNA and combat out-of-control cell growth.

The Benefits of Drinking Hydrogen Water: Prevent Metabolic Syndrome.

A disorder characterized by a constellation of symptoms (including obesity, insulin resistance, high cholesterol and hypertension), metabolic syndrome is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Nakao and colleagues conducted a study of 20 patients at risk for metabolic syndrome, instructing them to drink about tow quarts of hydrogen-rich water per day for eight weeks. Blood tests were done at the start, middle and end of the study period. Results: After eight weeks, participants showed, on average, a 39% increase in blood levels of antioxidant enzymes, 8% increase in blood levels of HDL “good” cholesterol and 13% decrease in total cholesterollevels of improvement that significantly lowered their risk for metabolic syndrome.

Improve Health for Diabetes and Prediabetes patients.

A Japanese study involved 36 patients with either type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (a prediabetic condition in which blood glucose levels are higher then normal). Some patients drank about 30 ounces of hydrogen-rich water daily for eight weeks.. the rest drank the same amount of plain water. Results: Hydrogen-rich water consumption was associated with significant decrease in LDL “bad” cholesterol and urinary markers of oxidative stress as well as improved glucose metabolism.. in tow-thirds of prediabetes patients, oral glucose tolerance test results to normal. Among plain water drinkers, there were no significant changes.

Ease the negative side effects of radiation treatment for Cancer.

In a 2011 study, Dr. Nokao’s team looked at 49 liver cancer patients undergoing radiation, a treatment that often increases fatigue and negatively affects quality of life. Participants who drank about two quarts of hydrogen-rich water daily for six weeks showed lower blood levels of oxidative markers (by-products of cell injury caused by free radicals) and reported higher quality of life than participants who drank tap water. Hydrogen-rich water did not compromise radiation’s therapeutic antitumor effects, Dr. Nakao noted. In addition, animal studies show that consumption of hydrogen-rich water may help reduce the risk for atheroscleosis.. prevent stress-induced declines in learning and memory.. slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease.. prevent or ease colitis.. reduce allergic reaction.. improve kidney function in kidney transplant patients.. and lessen kidney toxicity and other side effects of the chemotherapy drug cisplatin.

KLUAY TOD PA JAE กล้วยทอดป้าเจ้

12 MMAG. / MUSEUM

Antie Jae’s Fried Bananas In Hua Hin there are many historical buildings and places of interest, today we want to introduce what many believe is the oldest of all the foods. Kluay Tod (fried banana). Kluay Tod is thought to be one of the oldest and most popular street foods in Thailand. You can find this delicious fried fruit at almost every street corner from the local vendor’s stalls. Kluay Tod Pa Jae (Antie Jae’s fried banana) has existed for almost 50 years in Hua Hin. It is called after Pa Jae or Antie Jae, the older sister of the family. Antie Jae’s sister, Antie Tu and Auntie Sim are now taking care of the business. In addition to fried banana, the vendor also offers other deep fried snacks such as banana fritter (Khao Mao Tod), fried sweet potato, pumpkin and taro. Pa Jae’s fried banana has its own character and you will fall in love with its taste at the first bite. The colour of the batter is a light golden brown and not too thick and not oily. It is mixed with peanuts, which gives fried bananas the crunchy batter outside, whilst inside it remains fruity and sweet tasting. Auntie Tu told us the basic of making of Kluay Tod is using fresh ingredients. Everything has to be clean. However, the big secret that cannot be told is how to make a good batter.

Auntie Tu said that before the family got the perfect recipe, they did many experiments to find the right ratio of ingredients and still retaining the delicious flavour of the fresh fruit. They threw tons of batter mix away because it was not good enough, so much energy, time and money was consumed until they got the recipe that they were happy with. That recipe will now stay secret for only the family members to know. Antie Tu also told us with a big friendly smile that most customers are Hua Hin residents and tourists from around the globe. Some of them buy her product and ship them to family and friends who live aboard. “I am very happy when my customers are happy and enjoy eating my products”, she said. Kluay Tod Pa Jae is surely a signature snack of Hua Hin and a must try for everyone. OPENNING TIME: Open every day from 7 am to 3 pm. GET THERE: The vendor is close to the intersection between Chosin Road (soi 55) and Naebkhehars Road. (Close to 7elven). GPS: N 12 34.391, E 99 57.415

interview

Mr. Ekkarat Suppagarn In this issue we have a chance to talk with Khun Ekkarat Suppagarn, a successful Thai real estate businessman, living in Hua Hin who started his successful business at a young age. He talks about how he started out, the economic crisis which hit the market and the difficult times incurred and the return to making a successful company. Khun Ekkarat was born in a Pranburi. He went to a secondary school in Hua Hin, Wittayalai, and was in the same class as Mayor Nopporn Wutdhikul. After that he went to boarding school in Ratchaburi province and graduated in Civil Engineering from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi. He is now the owner of Smarthouse Projects & Hua Hin Quality House Construction, married, with 4 children.

15 MMAG. / MANIFESTO

WHAT WAS THE BEGINNING OF YOUR OWN BUSINESS? Since the 3rd year of my studies in university, I was thinking about having my own construction company in Pranburi, my hometown. I am also the oldest brother in my family, therefore it is expected that I return back to my home town and live in Pranburi. Upon graduation, I searched for a job that gave me more knowledge about construction and real estate. I was employed as a trainee at Rangsiya village for 4 months and then worked at Quality House Company in Bangkok for a year. After that I moved back to Pranburi and started my own construction company. This went very well and I got many construction projects, such as collage buildings, Government buildings, private house projects and management of land sales But in 1997, my company like many others was hit hard by the national economic crisis. We had to stop all construction work for 5 years until in 2005; We then started building houses for foreigners in Hua Hin under my Hua Hin Quality Home Company. I was lucky that my first customer saw our advertisement from a free copy magazine. After that we got more customers from Europe, because they were able to see the quality of our work and high standards, they were also able to view the portfolio which we had put together and the comments, recommendations and references from our clients. Later on I bought a piece of land and started to build Smart House Project 1. I still remember that it was not easy to convince the brokers to back our project. We built a show house and introduced our quality construction to the market at an affordable rate. It was successful and Smart House Project 1 sold out within 3 months. After that Smart House Project 2&3, Smart House Golf Resort and Smart House Valley all followed.

16 MMAG. / MANIFESTO

WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS OF SMART HOUSE PROJECT? We build a quality constructed house at affordable prices, by out sourcing, using technical and specialist teams for each areas of work required in its construction, with qualified electricians undertaking all the electrics, specialist roofers, and trained joiners responsible for all door/window frames. Only those trained in their specific trades to work in the construction phase. In doing this we can deliver the finished house to the customer on time. We also have service and construction teams, which are able to communicate with the customer right through its construction phase and with the after-care to our customer upon completion. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS? We are continuing to sell our latest projects and continue the good relationship that we have with our customers, including the best after-care service that we can supply. In the future, I plan to introduce another small project that consists of 25 plots on 10 Rai of land and within the local area of Hua Hin. WHAT ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS/ STIMULATIONS THAT GET YOU OUT OF THE DIFFICULT TIMES IN YOUR LIFE? My family is my greatest inspiration and my biggest support. During the economic crisis in 1997, we had a very difficult time. We opened a restaurant, called Krua Yuwarat, We helped each other and shared our love. We also stayed calm and resolute as a family and did only the right things. My experiences have also taught me to be more aware when spending money. You cannot spend more money than what you earn. SUNDAY BBQ BRUNCH Oceanside Beach Club & Restaurant Our recommendation for today’s brunch; Oceanside Beach Club & Restaurant at Putahracsa Hua Hin. Located in a nice breezy setting, the beach club offers wonderful panoramic views of the Gulf of Siam. Our invitation was for the introduction and opening of the Sunday afternoon BBQ beach brunch. You can choose to laze around on lounge beds by the beach front and garden, or relax within the restaurant area. The music played by the resident DJ is a mixture of jazz/funk and groove sounds, which you can totally chill-out to while relaxing and lazing under the sun around the pool and garden areas

For drinks, there is a fantastic selection of numourous cooling and refreshing non-alcoholic cocktails being served. Whilst sipping them you can taste the blends of flavours and fresh fruit being used in these cocktails. For those that would prefer a wine then there is a great selection of white & red wines. The appetizers were fresh, mixing a good selection of traditional seafood on ice (mussels, oyster, crab and prawns) with combinations of Thai fish, fish cakes and meat dishes, fresh tasty salads, combined with freshly baked bread in various shapes. The food combination of fish and beef was really magnificent, well-chosen with lots of choices.

PUTAHRACSA RESORT Hua Hin The main courses were varied and made for both the European and Asian palate. From the grill you can choose tender steaks cooked to your liking, lamb, veal, chicken and pork and of course the fresh sea bass, squid and prawns. ACTIVITIES in CHA-AM

Cha-am is a quiet beach retreat in Petchaburi Province, located less than 200 km to the south of Bangkok and 20 km north of Hua Hin. Thanks to its proximity to Hua Hin, Cha-am slowly developed into a tourist destination, though a far quieter one than its popular neighbour to the south. While it is relatively quiet, Cha-am still offers visitors a number of beach activities, such as jet skiing and banana boat riding, and the seafood is as readily available and inexpensive as any beach town in Thailand. For a little local character, visitors can travel north to a quaint fishing village that includes a harbour full of fishing boats and a number of seafood restaurants. Apart from beach activities, there are more interesting places to see and explore around Cha-am.

Hin Lek Fai Restaurant A taste of Asia & Italy

26 MMAG. / MEAL

If you are looking for a fine dining experience, a place with a romantic atmosphere and setting, classical music playing in the background and set within beautiful tropical gardens, then you should take a visit to Hin Lek Fai Restaurant. The restaurant has a long and intriguing history. It is a former Pasta Factory outlet, which was established in 1999. The well-known Pasta Factory Company was located at several locations around town and finally moved to the West of Hua Hin. The name has now been changed with the restaurant being named after the sub-district that the restaurant is located. First impressions as we arrived at the restaurant, is that the reservation card on our table was made from a tree leaf with my name and reservation time on it. It had been put together with a lovely Plumeria flower and placed on the beautifully designed Thai style table setting. The décor in the restaurant is that of Northern Thai Style, with teak wood dining table and chair sets, covered with an authentic Thai style printed textile. The garden is beautiful with a wonderful and relaxing ambiance with trees and shrubs. Add to this the gentle classical music being played in the background. There is also a small straw roofed Sala (covered area) attached to the restaurant. Under which you can view an antique rice mill and old Vietnamese three wheeled bike. It all adds to make this an eating experience. The menu has a wide selection of dishes and beverages on offer. Both Asian and Italian food is served with great care and attention, delicate decoration and presentation when being served and coupled with excellent service. Special homemade dishes of both main courses and desserts are also readily available. The food might not be as adventurous as the film-set perfect setting, however, it’s tasteful, delightfully presented and served, with a price which is both affordable and offers quality in a wonderful setting.

We ordered Homemade Lasagne Bolognese. The presentation of the dish was lovely; it was a mix of both Thai and European styles, by using banana leaves and orchid flowers to decorate the plate, with the Lasagne being placed on top. The food was extremely tasty and very good, cheesy and creamy with a good portion served. It was just right. If you are not too full then there is always the choice of desserts. There are several selections of homemade goodies on the menu such as Tiramisu, Panna Cotta, Crème brûlée and Banana or Mango Flambé. It’s a bit difficult to choose because all looks great on the menu. I finally ordered Mango Flambé served with homemade mango ice cream. The taste was sweet and sour, with the mix of succulent fresh mango and creamy ice cream, just delightful. It was really a perfect after meal dessert. And finally when we asked for the bill, it was brought to the table in a really unique way. The bill was placed into a small vase and surrounded by colourful flowers. I was really impressed by the lovely little extra details made by the owners so it would ensure a memorable evening at the restaurant. The restaurant is located about 8 km. West of Hua Hin town centre. It is maybe a bit far for people who come from the city by motorbike. However, it is very easy to reach by taxi. There are also enough parking spaces along the quiet road at this location. If you are looking for a lovely, romantic and unique setting in a quite location, then you will love it here. Reservations in advance are highly recommended to avoid disappointment. NIGHT OUT

28 MMAG. / MARGARITA

Nightlife in Hua Hin is less chaotic than other big cities in Thailand. The wild nightlife couldn’t be expected. The ambiance is easy-going and relaxing. The night here can be passed by sitting back, listening to music, drinking beer and socializing. Hua Hin is known as a destination for families or those who prefer rustic and peaceful vacation. Therefore, it tends to cater those who are seeking a quiet and laid-back night, sipping a cocktail or beer, having a chat with friends and family or a little dancing to get the night a little more energetic. Some places also feature live music. Sport bars with pool tables or with big TV screens and Irish pubs can also be found. There are a few discos around town, but the better ones seem to cater more towards young Thais and could be very crowded at the weekend. Some hotels offer chic and more sophisticated night out.

Listen to Rock Music at

El Murphy’s Irish Pub TEXT BY MARIANNE GEVERS

It was just another Friday when a Dutch friend called us up and asked us if we would like to have a bite and a drink downtown that evening. His wife, a photographer, was working in Bangkok and he didn’t like to go out alone. Since we had nothing else to do we agreed and asked him if he likes hardrock. ‘Yes, I do’, so that was settled. At about 8:30 p.m. we entered the Irish bar & steakhouse El’Murphys, 25, Soi Selakam (near the Hilton), found ourselves a table not too close to the music boxes (we also liked to have some conversation) and ordered a pitcher of local draught beer (of course they serve all sorts of Irish beer, too). The band hadn’t started yet but looking around at the other guests you could see that they all, especially the ones right in front of the stage, were dearly waiting for the music to start.

At a certain moment our friend asked ‘do they ever take a break?’ ‘Hardly, just for a drink and a smoke, here you really get what you come for, hardrock!’ This was the third time we heard them play and every time with the same enthusiasm and growing, getting better. Especially in the solos you recognise the love for their music. Our friend, who heard them for the first time, was so stunned that, the next day after talking to his wife being co-editor of this magazine - he asked me to write an article about the bar and the band. I never hesitated to take my chance and tell everybody who loves hardrock: go to EL’MURPHYS and listen to the STONED HEAD BAND, you’ll have the time of your life; for hardrock the place to be in Hua Hin!

Not much later the STONED HEAD BAND, a Philippinian band, opened with Hotel California (The Eagles for those who forgot) and immediately everybody was completely “in the music”. Their repertoire stretches from The Eagles, Gary Moore, Guns n Roses, Pink Floyd, Survivor, and practically everything in between. Whatever you ask them to play, they play, but only once a night, and … every number by heart.

ADDRESS: 25, Sela Kam Rd., Hua Hin 77110, Thailand OPENNING TIME: Open at 7am for breakfast & sports.Daily drink & food specials.Air-con bar & outside seating.Rooms from 600b.Live music nightly at 9pm. TEL.: 032 522525

The Classic Thai Appertizer

Miang Kum INGREDIENTS Filling: 5 tablespoons grated coconut, roasted in oven until light brown (Medium Heat) 3 tablespoons finely diced ginger 3 tablespoons finely diced shallots 3 tablespoons unsalted roasted peanuts 3 tablespoons small dried shrimps, chopped 3 tablespoons finely diced lime 2 tablespoons chopped green bird’s-eye chillies 20 edible tree leaves or lotus petals

Sauce: 1 tablespoon shrimp paste ½ tablespoon sliced shallots ½ tablespoon sliced galangal 1 teaspoon sliced ginger 2 tablespoons chopped dried shrimps 2 tablespoons grated coconut 3 tablespoons chopped unsalted peanuts 1 cup chopped palm sugar 2 ½ cups water

PREPARATION Take a saucepan and mix the shrimp paste, shallots and galangal, then place on heat until you can smell the aroma, then let it cool. Blend the shrimp paste, shallot and galangal mixture with the coconut, peanuts, shrimp and ginger in a food processor, or, if you really want to do it the old-fashioned way, pound the ingredients with a mortar and pestle. Pour the contents into a saucepan, adding the sugar and water. Mix well and keep stirring as it comes to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer while the mixture shrinks to about a cup full, then let it cool. Serving : Pour the sauce into a small, decorative serving bowl and arrange the edible leaves, dried shrimps, limes, shallots, small hot chilies, peanuts, gingers and roasted coconuts in separate, very small bowls around it on a medium sized platter. Eating : Take a lotus petal and place a small amount of the filling ingredients in the middle, top with a spoonful of sauce, and fold up into a little package. Pop the package into your mouth and enjoy the fresh, springy taste. Leaves can be from a variety of edible Thai tree foilage, including Cha Plu (piperaceae) and Thonglaang (coral). AO MANAO

with Hua Hin’s photographers

After finishing snorkelling at Koh Chan, we headed to our hotel in the town of Prachuab Khirikhan. It was my first time here and l was amazed that there were so many activities and things to do, plus there are many places that you can visit, all this in a quiet and small city. As I had previously mentioned in the last issue, Photo Club Hua Hin had organized this trip, therefore l knew that the schedule for our group would be well planned for the keen photographer. We all love taking photos of spectacular views, so it doesn’t matter if we have to walk any distance or climb a mountain in order to get the right view. We arrived at our hotel, Ountawan Hotel, which is located in the centre of Prachuap khirikhan town, just a few minute’s walk from the beach. Although it is a budget hotel, it was very clean and had everything that you needed for your stay. Local convenience stores and market are nearby. I fully recommend this hotel if you are looking for accommodation in this area. For more information about this hotel please call; 032 604 931.

34 MMAG. / MARINE - UNSEEN TRAVEL

We took a short nap to conserve our energy for a long evening ahead, because at the end of the day we wanted to climb to the top of Khao Chong Krajog (Mirror Tunnel Mountain), so named for the mountainside hole that seemingly reflects the sky. From there we would get a spectacular view of the Ao Prachuap coastline. Taking photographs there would be fantastic during the twilight hours. However, due to an unexpected accident we were unable to go, so that will have to wait for our next visit. So after a change of plans, we filled our afternoon by taking a visit to Ao Manoa, a beautiful wide open sandy beach with shallow seawaters. Here is a perfect place for family picnics and recreation. Ao Manao is under the supervision of the Royal Thai Air Force. This area was once the site of Thai and Japanese troops during World War II, in 1941. There are several interesting attractions to see, such as an historical park, the Jao Po Khao Lom Muak shrine, along with wonderful hiking in the Lom Muak Mountain. Situated on top of Lom Muak Mountain, you will have the most beautiful panoramic views of the 3 bays (Ao Noi, Ao Prachuap and Ao Manao).

We didn’t have the time to do everything we wanted to do, so we decided to visit one of the most unseen attractions in Prachuap khirikhan province. Taking a walk across Tha-le Weak (separated sea). During its lowest tide of the day (especially in April – May), you can see the appearance of a golden sandy beach, which links the main land together with Koh Rom, Koh Lam and Koh Lak. Tha-le Waek then disappears again at high tide. It was really amazing to walk on this small path of sand from the main land and across to the islands, even when it is not at its lowest, with the sea no higher than knee level, it is still very safe and well worth it. We reached the island easily and were able to take many stunning photos of the beautiful seascape with the islands in the background. Also bobbing around on the crystal clear water were colourful fishing boats. We relaxed on the island by taking

photos, talking with the friendly local fishermen who catch ink fish on a daily basis. Walking barefoot on this quiet, beautiful and scenic beach, letting the sea air blow through your hair, thinking about absolutely nothing. It was a truly wonderful and relaxing time. Thanks to Photo Club Hua Hin and DJ Oat who organized this UNSEEN trip!!! If you are in Prachuap khirikhan don’t miss these wonderful picture perfect locations and attractions. MANCHESTER My Home Town 36 MMAG. / MILES

Quite simply, whatever your interest, Manchester’s got it! You want bars, clubs, restaurants, nightlife? From the famous “curry mile” (One of Europe’s largest Asian Food Areas!) situated in Rusholme about a mile outside of the City Centre, to China Town a large area in the City catering for all Far East tastes. Every cuisine is catered for somewhere in the city. From Armenian & African, Mongolian Barbeques, Vietnamese, Thai, Portuguese, Kosher, Halal through to Vegetarianism.

Find yourself in one of the hundreds of traditional English pub’s and treat yourself to some of the cheapest (and best) pints in the UK. The Manc’s (local people) know how to party and you can enjoy a good night, every day of the week (the weekend starts on Thursday). There are at least 5 different areas within the city centre for drinking, where the pubs and bars follow in quick succession - The Print work’s area has everything under the one roof. Each area has its own vibe; the Northern Quarter is renowned for its live music and up-and-coming DJs. The Locks and Deansgate are known for their scantily clad girls and stag and hen parties. The bars and clubs on and around Oxford Road cater to the student population. Canal Street (Gay Village) and the surrounding area offers a vibrant and tolerant atmosphere to party people. The bars and clubs mainly cater for the gay and lesbian crowd, but there’s nothing stopping any tolerant, fun-loving person joining in the shindigs going on there! Canal Street is also the focal point of the annual Mardi Gras festival, normally held on August Bank Holiday weekend. Typically, street carnivals and funfairs are set up throughout the period, with a citywide parade on the Sunday. It’s not quite on a par with New Orleans, but is one of Europe’s largest and most popular gay events.

You like shopping? If you’ve got a full day devoted to shopping make time for the the Northern Quarter where you’ll find cutting edge fashion by young designers. If you want to keep dry head a couple of miles out of town for the renowned Trafford Centre or try the revamped Arndale Centre in the city centre. For designers go to the department stores Harvey Nichols and Selfridges (they are next to each other) or head to The Avenue between Deansgate and Spinningfield. You’re into arts and culture? Salford’s Lowry is a world class showcase of some of the artist’s finest works while the Imperial War Museum offers a sober and reflective view of the tragedies of conflict. Manchester Museum is something to behold, as is the Science and Industry Museum. There is something for everyone in this city. The Bridgewater Hall is home to two of the UK’s great orchestras, the BBC Philharmonic and the Halle. There are great theatres, the Lowry in Salford Quays, the Palace on Oxford Rd, or the arenas (MEN area and Manchester Central) host shows by world class performers from right across the musical spectrum.

How about sport? Football is well represented by Premier League teams in Greater Manchester. Manchester has 2 world class teams in City and United. Both offer hospitality packages as well as stadium tours and shops where you can buy merchandise. The Manchester Aquatics Centre, The Velodrome and many more sports stadiums and arenas to visit and watch from as a spectator.. Like the outdoor life? Manchester is within a couple of hours of four of the UK’s finest national parks. One, the Peak District comes to within twelve miles of the city centre (and only takes 1/2 an hour to get to). It has beautiful scenery walks many historic landmarks which you can view. If all that travelling’s a bit much, there are plenty of outdoor activities inside Manchester; canoeing and dinghying at the Quays or Sale water park, climbing the Ice Wall at the North Face shop, or just hanging out at Piccadilly Gardens on a warm sunny day and watching the kids go mad for the fountains.

So if you are looking for a vibrant, multi-national City which incorporates both the modern but still manages to keep its traditional Northern flavour and friendly people, then this is the place for you. For the young there is the night-life, clubs & pubs and concert arenas. For the sporting minded then we have great stadiums and sporting arenas coupled with two of the biggest clubs in world football. And for the cultural we have world renowned museums, acratecture and arts centres and galleries. If you just want to use Manchester as a base for getting out and about to go walking or visiting other areas of beauty then the transport systems are in place to make it easy to move around for your ease and pleasure. So come on have a look at us and see what you think, you’ll be amazed with what’s on offer, see you soon………

Kuiburi National Park

Great Hornbill STORY BY ARUT HOIMOOK

42 MMAG. / MOUNTAIN

I received a phone call one early morning from Prasit (the former Chief Ranger at Payang Ranger Station in Kuiburi National Park, Prachuap Khiri Khan. He told me that a large group of Hornbills were now nesting there within the Ficus trees close to Pond No1 and were likely to be there for the next couple of days. Having written about the Elephants residing in this park in the last issue, it was now time to get back and have a look at these Hornbills. I arrived late afternoon and stayed within a tent which is actually located inside the house at the Ranger Station. Yes l know it sounds crazy, but because it is so dangerous to have a tent outside at this location, owing to the Elephants which frequently are passing by on their way to Pond No4, which is located next to the station. As the sky became dark, our excellent food was cooked and served and was accompanied by some delicious white Thai whisky. As we sat down l soon struck up a conversation with Prasit. Prasit is 60 years old; he used to be the hunter of wild Tigers, Elephants and even the Asiatic Black Bear. However, around 1975 he saw that the forest was being cut and cropped back. Since that time Prasit has now turned himself into the protector of the forest and its wildlife. The following morning at around 6am, we drove from the ranger station, to the nearby Pond1, we then located ourselves into hides in the thick bush and focused our attentions onto the nearby Ficus trees and waited for the Hornbills to appear. There are numerous varieties of birdlife to be seen; today we wanted to see the Hornbills. We were not to be disappointed, soon after we heard this sound like that of a small plane passing overhead, Prasit said that was the sound of the Great Hornbill flying overhead.

As we looked upwards we could see around 30 Yellow & Black Great Hornbills flying over us towards the trees. These are large and imposing birds and it was a wonderful sight. We watched as they dined on their breakfast of Ficus fruit hanging from the tress, flying and jumping around from tree to tree. I can honestly say that seeing these great birds in the wild, is an experience that was unforgettable and one that l will always remember. The Great Hornbill is one of the largest of the species, with four other Hornbills being found in Thailand. They live only in abundant rain forest .Great Hornbill are omnivorous creatures and eat a variety of fruit, insect, snake or even small animals. So what do I like about the Great Hornbill, well l love to watch them eat the fruits and then watch as they fly overhead dropping the seeds from the fruit onto the forest floor. It is said that these birds are agents of forest regeneration, as one Great Hornbill can in its life span help in growing 50,000 trees from the falling fruit seeds. The Hornbills spent more than two hours eating and were then gone. Prasit said”They would return again later when the next batch of fruit had ripened”. I hope that I too can return again. Please note that a pair of Binoculars and Bird guide books are very important in identifying not just the Great Hornbill but for all bird watching. SEE YOU NEXT ISSUE…

What is AEC?

Asean Economics Community or AEC is a national gathering of 10 Asean countries, with its members being made up of: Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, and Brunei, to provide mutual economic benefits. Similar to that within the Euro Zone. The Introduction of this community was formulated in order to create greater bargaining power, exportation, importation and a greater liberalisation between all member states. Some countries however, do not fall into the reduction of Import duties in the same manner as others, owing to not reducing the respective taxes on importation. This is known as the Sensitive-Products Policy. Asean Economic Community (AEC) becomes effective with effect, 31st December 2015. The economic region will change greatly to how it currently is, with the following areas making up the blueprint for this community:

44 MMAG. / MONOCLE

1. A single ECONOMIC market and CENTRALISED production base 2. A highly competitive economic region 3. A region of equitable economic development 4. A region which is fully integrated into the global economy. INDIVIDUAL COUNTRIES SPECIALISED AREAS: Myanmar: Agriculture and Fisheries. Malaysia: Rubber & Textiles. Indonesia: Music Industry & Timber. Philippines: Electronics. Singapore: Faculty for Information Technology & Healthcare. Thailand: Travel & Tourism. Science & Aviation (Medial Thailand ASEAN).

HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF THE EVIDENT CHANGE THAT WILL AFFECT THAILAND.

Ability to Investment freely within the community. Countries with good education systems will be able to open a school in Thailand. The Schools which are more expensive to run but show poor quality will find it increasingly more difficult to be sustainable. Thailand will become a centre for Tourism and Aviation. As Thailand is located centrally within the AEC, Thailand is likely to become a major meeting place, exhibition & distribution centre, as well as an important communication centre for the community. Health and Medical services will grow significantly as well; because it will be integrated with the ever increasing tourism industry (Medical costs for foreigners will be significant).

Trade growth is expected to increase by at least 25% in some industries such as automotive, tourism & transport. However, the concern in Thailand is that the industries such as agriculture, construction and industrial textiles will be affected. The production bases could be moved from Thailand to alternative countries, where cheaper labour and wages will be used in these sectors which require only unskilled workforces. The English language will become very important. With so many people from ASEAN countries living in Thailand and unable to speak Thai, they will require to speak English (English language will become the main language spoken within AEC). The English language will become more prodomident in the media, advertising, news and television world. There will be an increase in English language schools, providing a wide range of courses. The commercial borders will become much busier. The borders will be easier to cross, with fewer regulations in place, making it easier to enter. However, this may lead to an increase in drug trafficking and leading to anti- social problems.

• •

• •

It is likely that the unskilled workforces from neighbouring Burma, Laos, and Cambodia will move into Thailand to find work. This may lead to social problems and an upsurge in crime. The government should monitor these and any changes, acting quickly and appropriately when nessacery. Thai people who speak fluent English are likely to move aboard to work, especially those that work within the IT and software industry’s. (Singapore will be a leader of this industry). As the Thai wage structure is much lower than their counterparts in Singapore, it is very likely that some may look to making the move. So to compensate for this it is expected that the smaller and medium size IT companies operating in Thailand will adjust their pay structure to compensate for this. Otherwise we may see a “Brain Drain”. The Hotel & Tourism Industry, to include Restaurants, Car

Rentals etc.; which are situated close to the border with other member countries will become more vibrant due to increase of traffic. And cities along the border will develop more and more as they become important transport hubs. Infrastructure in Thailand will become more self-sufficient, providing that adequate preparation is made. Bangkok will become heavily congested, due to its position as capital of Thailand and the central base of AEC. There will be more traffic (air freight and passenger, vehicle access) using Suvarnabhumi Airport, which will become more congested. (The expansion of the airport has just begun). Thailand is a major hub for the global food market, with great experience in production and distribution in the food industry worldwide. The Issues of social care, waste management, religious indifferences must be managed correctly, so as not to create urban slum communities such as little Burma, little Cambodia or China.

45 MMAG. / MONOCLE

CHANGE OF TRANSPORT : the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC)

A huge land based transport corridor (EAST-WEST ECONOMIC CORRIDOR) will join east to west, from The Gulf of Martahan in Burma, to the port of Da Nang in Vietnam. A total distance of 1300km approx. This will become a main arterial route allowing free access to the South China Sea and Indian Ocean. Transportation and logistics in the AEC will further develop. Thailand will have more opportunities in exporting as Thailand is situated centrally, which allows easy access for transportation to sea ports in other adjoining member states, when delivering into and out of the country. Land prices are likely to rise, especially around the major business cities and towns. Furthermore, Myanmar (Burma) also has large construction projects taking place, the “Tavoy Project” being just one such now in place. This combines a large industrial land-locked harbour, which allows access for the AEC to enter the Indian Ocean with passing through or via Singapore. The project is a joint undertaking

Reference: www.thai-aec.com

46 MMAG. / MONOCLE

between the Italian-Thai Development PLC. This major project will allow for the export and Import of goods across the Indian Ocean to coastal ports in Europe & Middle East. Another important aspect of the “Tavoy Project” will be the importation and processing of gas and oil at the new petrochemical plant Once the process is complete, it will flow through the country of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Indochina as the final destination will be the port of Da Nang, Vietnam. From here these products will then be exported to East Asia, Japan and China. It will become even more important for Thai people to learn and communicate In English, as this will be the way forward. Business, be it commercial, financial or industrial In the AEC, will become a huge market in Thailand. In order for the Thai people to gain a share at this marketplace, then they must adapt and prepare well, in order to gain the lions share.
