The potential benefit of this modern terminal will be in the establishment of College Station as a regional gateway for its area. It allows citizens to fly directly to key transportation hubs across the country, bypassing the extra time and expense of flying through one of the major cities. Its proximity to major cities in the state allows it to be a viable site for travellers from East Texas to connect to destinations worldwide, globalizing the region. The Current trends in development suggest significant future growth in the immediate vicinity of the existing airport location. This is supported by the emergence of the Brazos Valley Biocorridor, as well as the addition of a major public museum at the site of the Bush Library, both of which enhance the city’s global status as an emerging destination.

projectgoals 01

Design a new airport terminal facility which captures sense of place, reinforcing and enhancing the character and identity of its location.

02

Minimize the potential safety and operational impact of contemporary security issues, focusing on spatial relationships and density of users.

03

Anticipate the need for future growth and expansion, as well as flexibility, compensating for the unpredictable nature of the aviation industry.

04

Provide a high degree of clarity, in order to maximize the effectiveness of traveller circulation and user orientation and wayfinding.

05

Celebrate the innovation and excitement of flight, enhancing perception of travel in an increasingly globalized culture.

programinfo This professional study investigates modern airport design, noting its role as a “gateway to the world. Sense of place is used as an appropriate tool to add relevancy to a center of urban significance. Considering the complex nature of the industry, this project seeks to mitigate the adverse effects that functional requirements can have on the experience of travel and place. Spatial clarity and legibility are critical to allow the opportunity for an impactful and memorable passage between ground and air. This experience is protected by considering contemporary security issues, in order to minimize potential safety and operational impacts in the event of an attack against the facility.

Large, light canyons highlight the main axis of public circulation in the terminal. This allows passengers to visually connect to both stages of travel. Ramps connect the airside concourse with gate holding areas, allowing physically separate spaces to remain visually connected.

Large structural members reinforce the public central spine, giving clear directionality. The main span of the roof is a system of skylights which accept light from the north. Light becomes the “material for the roof, enhancing the legibility of the space with natural orientation points.

Each gate module is separated by a lowered skylight, which also points travellers attention to the final destination, the airfield. Each skylight also serves as a reference point, informing users of their progress down the concourse. In the arrivals concourse, structure dictates the path of circulation, directing travellers to baggage claim.
