DIVIDED FABRIC Due to ruptures in Berlin’s history, specifically World War Two, the city has been both politically divided and literally divided by the Berlin Wall. After decades of independent growth the wall was removed and the two halves of the city have begun contemplating ways to reconnect their separate urban fabric conditions. Berlin has taken samples of other conditions throughout the city and used them to fill the gaps in an attempt to reunify the city. These sample methods are explored and have become the starting point in beginning to explore the urban fabric conditions of Chicago and how they may also require a reunification of their own.

SOUTH LOOP IMPORTED INTERVENTION My proposed intervention attempts to pull down and continue the morphology and program of the Chicago Loop while integrating a continuous route of public space. It also tries to create a public realm within the buildings at a level high above the street. The proposal takes its sample from the Chicago Loop, reinterprets it, and uses the sample to reconnect previously disconnected portions of the city.

SCHAUMBURG, IL GROWING URBANISM Because of their dependence on foreign imports, the rise of oil and energy prices has a particularly devastating effect on big box retail. In order to grow their markets and stay competitive, companies such as Target are expanding to include groceries. By taking the initial logic of the big box store and applying it to other elements of the community a more urbanized solution can be created that integrates food production which in turn raises profits for retailers and creates a much different suburban environment.

SCHAUMBURG, IL GREENHOUSES URBANIZED When using food production as a means to boost profits, big box retailers must maximize crop yields. Crops with similar growing conditions would be planted together and a technique called companion planting would be utilized. This technique involves planting specific crops near one another in order to receive certain benefits including pest control, vigorous growth, and higher yield. This strategy must also consider demand. By paying close attention to demand and crop compatibility, retailers can maximize profits while supplying a fresh product.

RECYCLING BARCELONA’S INDUSTRIAL PORT_THALASSOTHERAPY BUILDING

ARCH 366: SPRING 2009

BARCELONA’S INDUSTRIAL PORT REVERTING URBAN WATERFRONTS Throughout Barcelona’s history the city has had several strategies of transformation and development. Barcelona’s growth is limited by the rivers mountains and sea that surround it. Because of this, the city has been forced to change its strategy of expansion to one of re-invention. Using this strategy this project creates a space dedicated to leisure that relates to the sea and consists of thalassotherapy facilities for high density use.

The infrastructure of the Chicago River has the ability to create various networks within the city. By understanding and re-creating these networks on the site at Wolf Point the new water taxi station can more easily be integrated into the macro urban network and serve as a hub for public activities. Destinations on the site become the places for this activity, the network is translated into pedestrian paths, and the remaining spaces become zones of phytoremediation.
