Book fair in freight containers
plan and sections through the freight container interior
Scope: Design Studio I Ruler teacher: Jos茅 Ant贸nio Bandeirinha Accountable teacher: Jos茅 Ant贸nio Bandeirinha Place: generic geometric square Program: organization of a book fair with its bookshops within the interior of freight containers Year: 2004 model photographs
The physical arrangement of the fair is the result of random disposal of the freight containers around a central garden existing in a generic public space. As if it was an invasion, each container gets as closer as possible to the garden. The containers interior is coated with white plaster. A wavy surface of tissue is designed in the ceiling which allows the space to become more comfortable, contrasting with the freight containers metal weight and coldness. The bookcases hang from the ceiling, moving along a rail system, which turns the interior space unpredictable. A window opens on the opposite side of the entrance allowing for visual contact between the reader and the garden hidden behind the freight containers.

The dwellings are designed in an allotment of reduced dimension with an excessive length over its width. To introduce light and dynamics on the interior of the dwellings, the vertical circulation was placed inside a cylinder made of glass and perforated metal plates, which crosses all the building floors till the roof. This cylinder defines the interior organization of the dwelling space: the kitchen and living room appear around it, the more private area of the house distinguishes itself from this space.

Placed in the middle of an extensive lawn, the project consists of a glass container covered with a thick concrete slab supported by columns. The dorm rooms open to the river and to the city of Coimbra. The remaining spaces, public and therefore more translucent, are disposed on the opposite side, opening up to the green. Those are organized by different form volumes according to the programs – administration, kitchen and laundry – allowing the definition of areas for different uses in between them– reception, living room and cafeteria.

The building appears as a massif rising from the terrain corner and overcoming the elevation. Three volumes are clearly distinguished in the upper elevation, each corresponding to distinct programs which can occasionally expand to the square. In one of them are the auditorium and the educative services, in the other, the cafeteria and the shop, in the last, the exhibition areas. The access to the museum main lobby, which is placed immediately under the square, can be made through each of the volumes or through an exterior direct access. The main lobby is in the meeting point between the three programmatic volumes, each one being accessible from there. The underground floor is reserved for the archive, storage and technical spaces. All volumes are defined by an orthogonal system of concrete pillars and beams. The space between pillars is filled, from the outside, with a transparent sheet of glass and by another interior surface, more often glass but changeable according to the use inside, turning into a surface of rock, a different type of glass or a colored plastic surface. Between those two layers there is sometimes a black-out which prevents light and heat entrance. During the day the shadows and reflexes created by the pillars and the glass prevail, while at night the interior light defines the building.

maintenance and revitalization of the slope green areas
During the Portuguese authoritarian regime (Estado Novo, 1933-1974) the upper town of Coimbra was submitted to a great scale intervention with the aim of creating a monumental university center (Pólo I). Over the years the idea of concentrating the University in its traditional core fade out and in the 80’s the University fragmentation process began with the edification of two more campus (Pólo II and Pólo III). In the next decade, facing an emptier university center, with the functional desertification of some of the buildings and their apparent physical ruin and corresponding public spaces abandon, a public competition was launched for the urban reconversion of this area of the city. The proposal chosen at this 1994 competition was from architect Gonçalo Byrne. Our work was developed over this proposal, in an attempt to critically revise it over the years, placing special emphasis over the Feira dos Estudantes square in front of Sé Nova church and all the eastern slope of upper town, remitted to a second plane when the Estado Novo authorities designed a new monumental axis defined by Monumental Stairs, Dom Dinis square, Rua Larga and ending in Porta Férrea. Our proposal works with the building of the Faculty of Medicine, Colégio das Artes and Colégio de São Jerónimo (both these two are former Jesuit colleges), and over all the eastern slope, from the Monumental Stairs through Padre António Vieira street. As main principles of work we defined the introduction of multifunctionality, the improvement of motorized circulation, of pedestrian access and parking, and the
requalification of public and green spaces. The traffic circulation was redesigned, which implied the creation of two underground parkings, one on Dom Dinis square and the other on Feira dos Estudantes square. The pedestrian accessibility was enhanced with escalators accompanying the rise of the Monumental Stairs and a public elevator on the oriental side of the hill. The University programs were reorganized in the Colégio das Artes and Colégio de São Jerónimo buildings, while on the building of the Faculty of Medicine, new programs, such as shops, restaurants, health cares and residential space, were introduced. The requalification of public spaces was centered on the redesign of Dom Dinis square, in the

definition of a new square between Colégio das Artes and Colégio de S. Jerónimo and on the rehabilitation of the urban importance of the Feira dos Estudantes square. The slope was preserved as a green area, being transformed into a new urban park and helping out with the already mentioned pedestrian accessibility improvements. The platform where Colégio de S. Jerónimo lies is reordered through this park, integrating in its structure programs such as social restaurants, academic research offices (CES) and a student residential.

We wanted to preserve the local identity, enhancing what still existed and reusing it as the setting for new occupations. The existing metal structure, surrounded by stone walls that we preserved, was reused and adapted to the new program of Tourism information center, with exhibition and performing spaces. The program was organized through a four floors structure (which protected itself in the pre-existing stone walls on the north side) in a dispersed way and making use of translucent materials. In the volumes reserved to the exhibition spaces the ceiling was designed with plaster skylights and fluorescent lighting, constantly adaptable to the specific necessities of each occupying event. In the most unprotected and open side of the structure we designed, on the ground floor, a completely open square intended to be occupied. As if it was an exterior auditorium, the square scenario is made of a usable and adaptable metallic structure, which relies on a pre-existing interior stone facade. The project aims to enhance the potentialities that occupation of space can bring, aspiring for the maintenance of urban dynamic or the adding of new qualities to its quotidian. This urban equipment will create the opportunity for alternative events, such as markets, festivals, concerts, creative or socio-economical practices, or even demonstrations, to take place.
