This year marks 60 years of graduating nurses from the College (formerly School) of Nursing. In recognizing this milestone it is also important to share with you how the program was started. Not everyone knows why the decision was made to start a nursing program at Florida State University, or the role the United States Public Health Service (USPHS), and statewide nursing organizations, educational leaders, hospitals, and medical professionals played in the decision to start a collegiate nursing program. In 1948 Ellwynne Vreeland, a Nurse Education Consultant on loan from the USPHS conducted a survey of nursing resources, needs and educational facilities for nurses in Florida. Based on the results of the survey, Miss Vreeland determined that there was an urgent demand for increased numbers of better prepared nursing personnel in the state of Florida. Now that the survey was complete, the questions remaining were how to establish the nursing program, what would the curriculum be, and where would the program be located. In 1950, FSU President Doak Campbell requested the services of Dr. Margaret Bridgman, a Consultant in Collegiate Nursing Education for the Russell Sage Foundation, as the university was ready to assume the responsibility for establishing a sound collegiate program in nursing as soon as possible. In January

1950, the Bridgman report titled “Report Concerning The Proposed College of Nursing Florida State University” was presented to President Campbell. Dr. Bridgman strongly recommended establishing a school of nursing at Florida State University to meet the needs of the State. In order for the program to be successful, she wrote that the first and crucially important step to establishing the program was to hire a highly-qualified Dean as soon as possible. After the decision was made to start a collegiate nursing program, President Doak Campbell hired Vivian M. Duxbury (pictured left), as the first Dean of the College of Nursing. She served as Dean from 1950 - 1971, and in 2001 the College of Nursing building was named Vivian M. Duxbury Hall in her honor. The College of Nursing has grown since its beginnings in 1950 and the graduation of our first students in 1952; in 60 years we have graduated over 6,000 alumni who reside in 49 of the 50 states. Our program offerings have expanded to include not only graduate, but accelerated undergraduate degrees in nursing as well. We encourage you to learn more about the College of Nursing, and Dean Vivian M. Duxbury’s role in the history of nursing education in the state of Florida by visiting the College’s archives located on the first floor of Duxbury Hall.

A Note from the Dean The 2011-12 academic year has been a challenging and rewarding year for faculty and students at the College of Nursing. The DNP Program received national accreditation from the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and 16 DNP students became the first graduates from doctoral nursing education in the history of Florida State University. We also graduated our second class of second-degree accelerated BSN students and admitted our first class of Freshmen BSN students. Faculty and students are enjoying new teaching-learning opportunities in our renovated Simulation Center and our classroom space will more than double in the Fall with the addition of five new nursing classrooms at the nearby FSU Wellness Center. Faculty and students continue to provide services in the community to help bridge gaps in healthcare for underserved families. Alumni receptions in Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa gave us opportunities to connect with alumni and to provide updates on the accomplishments of students, faculty, and alumni. I would like to thank all of our alumni who have generously made contributions to the FSU Foundation and/or served as clinical preceptors for our undergraduate and graduate students during the past year. It is always a pleasure to hear about the great accomplishments of our alumni and we hope you will continue to share your memories and achievements with us. I invite each of you to visit us at Duxbury Hall to see the progress we are making and the accomplishments of our faculty and students. Dianne L. Speake, Ph.D., R.N. Interim Dean
