PORTFOLIO Landscape Architecture

Melissa McKinley

bio The beauty of nature has spoken to me since childhood. Arizona is an awe inspiring state with a rich history. There is no more pure an emotion then to reconnect with wild places and through designing the landscape I want to share my knowledge and passions. Studying landscape architecture has allowed me to merge my passion for wildlife and natural systems with man-made spaces. The cohesion in my projects resonates from constantly striving to put nature first. Built environments provide a unique opportunity to strengthen the bond between nature and man. Through thoughtful design, landscape architects can preserve and restore the environment and her resources for future generations. Landscape architecture has provided me the outlet to change the future by re-imagining designs that are focused on nature and natural processes. Through a nature dedicated approach, designs become more complete and restorative as a whole. The selection of works in this portfolio represent a multitude of mediums that all resonate the importance of nature and the importance of rethinking our footprint. I hope they inspire you. Thank you, Melissa McKinley

Planting detail and site planting plan for Garfield Grove.

ISTB7 Building ASU Location: Tempe, AZ

Hand renderings and analysis was conducted. Renderings utilized sketch-up and Enscape.

A new construction building on ASU Tempe campus. The site included constraints of shade, foot traffic, street traffic and the light rail. This design aimed to use natural materials throughout with an emphasis on native plantings. ISTB 7 is a corner stone to ASU and ties the community together.

ISTB 7 Building ASU Primordial Plaza Location: Tempe, AZ The plants are larger than life and set up on berms to make the visitor feel small. The water features throughout site make a shift in the sites micro-climate and allow a diverse planting to be possible. Ficus trees provide dense shade and keep the delicate plants from the harsh sun in the morning. Rainwater is collected off the roof overhang through rain chains and the area acts as a retention basin.

Part of ISTB 7 project was a sitting area named ‘Primordial Plaza’ in reference to the School of Human Origins.

Moeur Park Bird Habitat Build Location: Tempe, AZ Improving the surrounding habitat to make it suitable for a cactus wren and improving the trail and access to wildlife. Below is a sketch-up rendering, run through Enscape, of a bird blind. To the right is a laser cut topo map created of the park site.

The focus was on using local materials, created during the construction phase. The pattern for the bird blind screen and entrance, was mimicking the haphazard stick placement of the cactus wren nests. Native trees were planted to provide shade near the sitting areas and create additional wildlife habitat.

Sonoran Solace Location: Tempe, AZ

A large scale project that involved an existing canal system and farm land that was to be reinvented into a multi-use space. This design focused on the canal and revitalizing a corridor that would be beneficial to both humans and animals alike. Renderings were completed in sketch-up. The rendering to the left is the proposed ‘ecotrail’ that parallels the revamped canal system that runs through the middle of the site. The multi-use paths along the canal connected the neighborhoods and the commercial centers throughout the site.

Hand Renderings The section to the left is of the proposed street-scape along McDowell Rd.
