Stacey’s dress “I bought the dress from Bendigo Bridal Collections, along with my Ƥngertip veil which had a trail of diamantes along the bottom of each layer. It was the second dress I tried on and it Ƥt perfectly. The minimal diamante detail on the bodice of the dress matched nicely with the Ƥngertip veil. Although the dress was very simple in detail, it was comfortable and really easy to manage on the day as the train was not too long.” Men’s suits “With the boys suits we made the decision to buy them so it would be hassle free. We purchased their charcoal grey pinstripe suits, their shirts and shoes from Man to Man in Shepparton. We went with charcoal grey as the colour suited both the boys better than a black suit. We had the groomsman’s tie and the grooms pocket handkerchief specially made by Paul from Talisman in Mooroopna to match the colour of the bridesmaid’s dress and the grooms already purchased tie.” Bridesmaid’s dress “After a lot of searching, it was in Michelle’s Bridal & Formal wear that we Ƥnally found a dress that we both liked. It was jade green and fell just under the knee with a soft organza layer over top. We chose it in the jade green as it suited my sister’s fair complexion but it was also a bit diơerent to the normal colours you see on bridesmaids. It worked really well especially with the boys suits.” Cake “Our friend made the two cakes for us, one that we used to cut and then a tower of cupcakes that later doubled as dessert for everyone. The cupcakes were chocolate and white chocolate mud cakes, with a butter cream icing. We had the cakes decorated with fresh oriental lilies that matched my bouquet.” Flowers “I had found a picture on the internet of the ƪowers that I wanted and I took that picture in to Mooroopna Florists and had them recreate it for me. My bouquet consisted of pink oriental lilies with white rose buds, camellia leaves and dodda vine around the outside.” ❚

Cultural wedding
Any nervous groom who feels the wait for his bride to walk down the aisle is getting too much for him, should spare a thought for Shepparton’s John Xu.
A combination of traditions B
efore John could see his sweetheart June on their wedding day in Beijing last year, he had a few traditional Chinese hoops to jump through.
“In China, the groom usually does all the wedding planning,” June said. “Because John was in Australia until a week before the wedding I had to do it all.”
Before he was allowed to enter June’s parents home, from where he was to collect her before the ceremony, he had to perform for the assembled bridesmaids and families.
And while most western brides thrill to the minutiae of wedding planning, June does not share their enthusiasm and has a theory about why Chinese brides are happy to leave it to the groom.
“I had to sing a song, tell some jokes, do a little performance – whatever they asked me to do,” said John.
“It was boring” she laughs, “but fortunately he did follow tradition by paying.”
Having passed muster and made it through the front door John then had to present the bridesmaids with a ‘lucky bag’ containing money and other items. With that done, he was sent on a treasure hunt around the house to Ƥnd June’s wedding shoes which had been hidden by the bridesmaids. Story: Dominique Cosgriff
Having found the shoes, John was Ƥnally allowed to enter his bride’s bedroom where she was waiting ‘quietly and nervously’ and place the shoes on her feet before carrying her to the car which took them to their wedding venue.
“Most Chinese brides have two or three dresses,” she said. “But I decided I needed more.”
The couple, who are both Beijing born and bred and have settled in Shepparton where John works as a project engineer for Goulburn Valley Water, met on a blind date in Beijing in 2005.
Because of the extremely humid weather John wore simple black pants and a shirt which he changed to match June’s outƤts.
When John returned to Australia for work, he and June stayed in touch and got to know each other better via long phone and video calls. With a proposal made and accepted and a wedding date set, June set about organising the wedding – in a departure from Chinese tradition. GV BRIDE AND GROOM FEBRUARY 2009
June wore a white western style wedding gown for the ceremony but it was just the Ƥrst of four dresses she chose for her big day.
“I was nervous and it was a very hot day, but I made it,” John said.
“I thought he was entertaining and very funny,” June said, while John was taken with the, “lovely, pretty girl,” he met that night.
8
The wedding was a combination of western and Chinese traditions and began with June and John bowing to each other, their parents and older guests and toasting all assembled before reciting vows they had written themselves. The ceremony was followed by a buơet wedding lunch at the same venue with one hundred and twenty guests, which constitutes a small to medium sized Chinese wedding.
While dresses two and three were evening dresses, June ended the day in a traditional Chinese silk Chi Pao. Wearing head to toe red for luck and happiness June, with John, ended the wedding day by making the traditional visits Ƥrst to his parents home and then her parents. Proving that no wedding day, wherever it’s observed is immune to the odd unexpected glitch, June missed the chance to throw her bouquet. “When the time came I couldn’t Ƥnd it.” ❚

Alishia’s dress “I chose a white modern dress that had a lace up back and fell to one side with a silver and diamante brooch with a corset made into it. The train was only short, though I had an extra long veil. I got my dress from Brides and Maids in Shepparton. My shoes were silver silk that went up around the ankle from The Road Way. I got all the jewellery from Blizzards in Shepparton.” Men’s suits “We didn’t go with suits for the guys, it was going to be warm weather. We got their black cotton pin stripe shirts from Man to Man and their ties being watermelon, white and silver vertical stripes, were from Roger David. Paul wore a vest which had white and pink stripes in it that blended well with the girls, and a crinkled white tie. The guys wore their own black pants and shoes.” Bridesmaid’s dress “I let my bridesmaids Amy and Eboni choose a dress they were comfortable with. The dresses from Brides and Maids in Shepparton, were strapless and went to the knees with ruƫes through the bottom half. I thought the colour ‘teaberry’ was gorgeous and stood out great. There was a piece of teaberry and silver ribbon around the waist. My ƪowergirls, Kimberley and Stef, wore vintage dresses from Myer. I also had them wearing wrist ƪowers so they were free to move around and still have it with them.” Cake “Our cake was made by a friend from Echuca. It looked amazing. It was three tier with a white chocolate base, chocolate centre and caramel top being all mudcake. The sides were standing white chocolate pieces, with an arrangement of pink roses, green and purple orchids. Deliciously wicked!!” Flowers “I was extremely impressed with our bouquets, I got them from Pure Design in Kyabram. In my bouquet were white roses and white orchids with green stems, and in my bridesmaids were hot pink roses and green orchids with green and pink stems.” ❚

A Sunday delight Echuca mothers of the bride and groom reflect on their children’s wedding day.
M
arcia Esmonde and Noeline Moore have known each other for a good 20 odd years and on Sunday, January 25 this year, were delighted to share the moment when Noeline’s son, Jamie, married Marcia’s daughter, Lisa, at the Onion Patch overlooking the historical Echuca Wharf. “It was a beautiful setting,” said Marcia. “Water has a way of giving people peace and it’s very romantic for some reason, very soothing and lovely. During such warm weather, the trees cool people down too, so we were very happy with how the ceremony went.”
Story and photographs: Jacqueline Berthaume
Both Marcia and Noeline joined forces in the months leading up to the wedding, giving their children assistance and taking on strong support roles in the background.
12
“We decorated the Onion Patch with ribbons and Noeline and I helped organise all the chocolates for the table settings so we fussed around with the ribbons and boxes,” said Marcia. “But apart from that, Lisa and Jamie did most of it which is a credit to them.” Only two days after the wedding, and Noeline was still ablush with how well it all went. “It was just beautiful, a loving day I would call it, and everyone enjoyed it. I got such great feedback from all the guests,” said Noeline. “Everything ƪowed smoothly. There was only one thing that Marcia and I were worried about and that was Lisa arriving on the banks of the ceremony in a speedboat. We had visions of her falling out. But it worked out Ƥne and it’s what they wanted, so we’re happy.” Lisa and Jamie chose Radcliơe’s in Echuca as GV BRIDE AND GROOM FEBRUARY 2009
the reception venue. “It was so refreshing,” boasted Marcia. “All the greenery and the ƪowers and little lights everywhere. The meals were beautiful, the band was fantastic, Lisa and Jamie were the last to leave! You couldn’t have asked for more.”
“... enjoy it and remember to take the time to look at your kids to say you’ve done a good job rearing children” “Weddings were pretty stiơ years ago, today they’re more relaxed and that’s the secret. I think it’s why I enjoyed it so much, because usually by the time the bride is ready to walk down the aisle, the bride’s mum is exhausted but that’s all diơerent now. And that’s how it should be. Wedding’s aren’t just about the bride, they’re about you and how you’ve brought your children up,” said Marcia. Noeline agrees that weddings have changed over the years and have turned into much more personal, relaxed aơairs. “Oh how things have changed!” she exclaims. “It’s all so diơerent nowadays. When we were young we didn’t have the hair trials and all the big build up. Wedding frocks were made at home and the wedding reception was usually in a hall which the church ladies catered for. We had artiƤcial ƪowers in the old days, there was much less hype, no hair, makeup, nails or stress. A lot of it is for show these days and a lot
of unnecessary money is spent on wedding cars and all sorts of add ons. It’s a lot more commercialised these days, but Lisa and Jamie set themselves a budget and didn’t go over it so that’s wonderful. I think you can still have a classy wedding without spending tens and tens of thousands of dollars.” Oơering advice to all the mothers-of-thebride-and-grooms-to-be out there in the Goulburn Valley who are currently planning nuptials, Noeline and Marcia had this to say: “Involve as many people as you can,” said Marcia. “The more people who have little tasks to do to help, the more they feel part of it and at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about. Weddings are a family aơair and people feel very important if they can contribute something small like sewing the ring cushions or dropping oơ ƪowers. “And of course, enjoy it and remember to take the time to look at your kids to say you’ve done a good job rearing children. I could burst with pride, all the years of raising kids and it’s like the star on the Christmas tree or icing on the cake to see your child be married. It’s the one day that you see it all come together.” Noeline agreed, advising mums of the groom to, “just be relaxed and go with the ƪow.” “There’s no use getting stressed,” she said. “Because at the end of the day, it’s about a love story and that’s what all the families and friends should all be celebrating.” ❚

How you choose to celebrate your wedding day can be the ultimate expression of who you are. Are you the master of the big bash or do you like to keep things more intimate and low key?
F
ortunately, weddings have a lot of traditions attached to them but while there are no real rules (apart from the obvious legalities) some guidelines exist to help you determine how to arrange your wedding, your way. Very Formal/Formal Another expression for these weddings would be ‘going all out’. Formal wedding ceremonies are almost always held in a house of worship, although a very fancy reception venue such as a country house would make a decent alternative if you are strictly nonreligious. The sky’s the limit here with a bride in a ƪoor-length gown, a full cathedral train and a full veil. The groom, fathers of the bride and groom, and groomsmen would wear full evening dress, opera hat, and kid gloves and up to 12 bridesmaids and groomsmen would be attending. Bridesmaids would wear ƪoor length gowns of the same style as the bride but in a diơerent colour and the mothers of the bride and groom would sport formal evening gowns.

If your heart is set on a formal wedding but you’re not quite up to committing to the top hat and tales routine, then all you need to do is dial it back a little bit. Perhaps a shorter veil for the bride and less accessories for the men and a few less attendants on both sides. As goes the ceremony, so goes the reception. A full sit down dinner of at least three courses is expected

preceeded by cocktails and canapés. The reception venue should be of the strictly high-end variety with a professional band. When it comes to very formal/ formal, more is more so gifts for guests should be classy and table settings – and everything else – should be of the luxury variety. Semi Formal This is the style of wedding which most of us are more familiar and comfortable with. This ceremony itself can be held pretty much wherever you like from a house of worship to your own backyard. Generally the bride will wear a ƪoor length gown (although that’s at her discretion) with no train and a short veil. Bridesmaids and groomsmen will generally number no more than Ƥve each and the bridesmaids will wear ballerina or below the knee dresses – but not longer than the bride’s. The mothers of the bride and groom usually sport street length dresses and the groom, fathers of the bride and groom, and groomsmen wear dark business suits. The reception for a semi-formal wedding would generally feature a two or three course sit down dinner, although lunch would also work, at a decent, but not ultra-fancy, reception venue or restaurant. A tastefully decorated outdoor venue is also acceptable.
Informal This is the preơered option for those on a very tight budget or those who simply prefer things a little more intimate or casual. The ceremony could be held anywhere from a registry to a church or garden but civil ceremonies are most popular with those choosing an informal wedding.
• Rsvp Cards • Thank You Cards • Table Menus • Bonbonieries • Church Books
Informal weddings are best viewed as day time events so the reception would usually be held at home or at a mid-price restaurant. A sit down meal isn’t necessary for an informal wedding but you’re obviously free to go that way if you want. A barbecue or cocktail party with canapés will work just as well. The beauty of informal weddings is that you make all the rules. While you’d usually expect the dress code for an informal wedding to be neat casual, if you’re only having close family and friends, you can reasonably expect them to honour the privilege of their invite by wearing something a little fancier – but deƤnitely not formal. The bride and groom can wear whatever they like (although, unless you’re Pamela Anderson a bikini is probably out) but should keep within an appropriate dress code. Informal weddings are usually small aơairs so a maximum of two bridesmaids and groomsmen is appropriate.❚

“The colour was called oyster and I really liked the shape of the sweetheart neckline and A-line skirt. “The process of having my wedding dress made was one of my favourite parts of the planning. It made me feel like a ‘real bride’ and it was so nice to step into a dress which was made speciƤcally for me.” Chris’ and the groomsmen’s suits “I always wanted Chris to buy a suit for the wedding. We started at Calibre and the Ƥrst suit Chris tried on, he bought. He wanted a tailored cut and not black. The suit he chose was khaki in colour and a slim Ƥt which suited him perfectly.

“At the time we were planning the wedding we were in Sydney and the groomsmen were in other states, so we decided to hire their suits from Myer. We found a style we liked and they tried them on in their closest store. “My Mum made Chris’ tie from oơ cuts of my wedding dress and the boy’s ties were made in material to match the girls.” The bridesmaid’s dresses “We knew we wanted a ƪowy dress however, it was quite diƥcult to Ƥnd anything under $500. My Mum found a dress in the Ezibuy catalogue which was exactly what I was after and only $89 each. As the girls were similar in colouring, I knew the mocha would work for them and the top section of the dress had folds in the material, which complemented my dress.” Cake “We got a chocolate mud cake made by the local baker in Port Douglas and it was HUGE!! We served this with tea and coơee later in the evening so we mentioned to the baker it wouldn’t need to be too big however this must have been lost in translation.” Bouquet/ƪowers “The tropical weather limited our options with ƪowers. I was lucky enough to Ƥnd a fabulous ƪorist in nearby Cairns. “I wanted long stem roses that looked like I had picked them out of the garden. As my dress was a darker colour, I wanted a contrast to that and thought cream roses would work. For the bridesmaids, I chose to throw a splash of colour into the ƪowers and chose orange roses for them.” ❚ Photographer: Inlighten Photography, Sydney Dress: Caritas Yu Bridal Couture, Sydney GV BRIDE AND GROOM FEBRUARY 2009

Nicole’s dress “I wanted a very elegant and simple dress that suited my personality as well as my body shape. I got my wedding dress from Lisa Ho, it was made of a delicate silk chiơon, with an under bust silk satin sash that threaded through a pleated detail on the dress. I chose ivory as it suited my skin tone more than white. Since the dress didn’t have a train I decided to have a veil made with a long train in ivory. I got the embellished shoes at a gorgeous shop in Brunswick called Cinderella Bella, they made up for the fact that my dress had no other glitz!” Adrian’s and groomsmens suits “Adrian knew from the beginning that he wanted a very classic looking suit. Fate took us to Hugo Boss and Adrian decided to buy his suit, shirt and tie there. He just had a plain white handkerchief, simple shoes and a slight stripe detail on the white shirt. “The groomsmen hired their single breasted black suits with a subtle pinstripe from Spurling, where it was combined with a white shirt and striped black-grey-white tie. The pageboy’s smart looking suit was from Anne’s Maternity Wear in Shepparton – black, white shirt, black tie – same as the groom.” Bridesmaid’s dresses “We decided to get the bridesmaid’s dresses made. I had seen a V-neck, sleeveless, knee-length style in a magazine, the girls all liked it so we took the picture to our dress maker. It suited all of the girls, was ƪattering and tied in with our simple, classic theme. It was broken up with an ivory sash and the girls wore black peep toe heels. “The ƪowergirl had an ivory dress with tulle layered skirt and tie up straps, little ballet shoes and a big ivory ƪower in her curly hair.” Cake “Cake was a three tier, white and dark chocolate marble mud made by the talented Vanessa Umbers at Sugar Rose. We had it decorated with real ƪowers to match the bouquet and four stripes of black ribbon.” Flowers “Zoe Toll from Sugar Rose made up a beautiful arrangement of white ranunculus, roses and peach coloured spray roses, broken up with black and tied up with black ribbon. The ƪowergirl’s bouquet was a miniature version of mine and the bridesmaids had cream coloured roses making up wrist corsages.” ❚ Photographer: Jaqueline Berthaume Dress: Lisa Ho, Melbourne

perfectly groomed The sight of a groom, flanked by his assistants, waiting for his bride to arrive is guaranteed to set hearts a flutter. But the sharply elegant look of those handsome devils doesn’t happen by accident.
T
hough they can’t compete with the girls in the time and eơort stakes, some thought and work is required to have the men’s outƤts do justice to the women they will be escorting.
The emerging trend for waistcoats, with matching ties and accessories available, is subdued colours, especially pale metallics, which coordinate eơortlessly with the shades most popular for bridal gowns.
The cost and convenience of suit hire makes it a popular choice for grooms and groomsmen. Hiring suits generally works out at around 33 per cent ($100 to $200 per suit) of the cost of buying and usually includes everything but the shoes which makes it an economical choice. Suit hire periods are usually Ƥve days so you’ve got a bit of breathing space.
The last few years have also seen an emerging trend in colour coordination not just within the bridal party itself but also with their family members.
But whether you plan on buying or hiring your wedding attire, the key to getting the optimum result is starting early. This is not a situation where you can simply walk into a menswear store and say, ‘I’ll take that one,’ and be out in Ƥve minutes. Hired suits will still require Ƥttings and, most often, alterations, and colour matching of ties and accessories can take some time. Ideally, the bride and groom will visit a menswear store together at least eight weeks before their wedding day. While it’s not unusual for the bride to act as a forward scout to see what’s available – as matching the guy’s colours to the girls is vital – having the happy couple make a joint visit helps ensure everyone is on the same page. Dark coloured suits are still overwhelmingly the most popular choice for grooms and groomsmen and whether you’re having a formal wedding requiring a tie, pocket hanky and satin lapels, or are taking a semiformal approach with a simpler two button suit, a waistcoat is recommended to set the bridal party boys apart from the male guests who will mostly be dressed in similar dark suits.

“People understand more and more these days that you get the best eơect in the wedding photos if you put a bit of thought into how the diơerent colours and shades are going to work together across the board,” says Glenn Busk, suit hire manager from O’Keeơe’s Mensland in Shepparton. “Nobody wants dad’s brand new expensive cream shirt looking dirty in the photos purely because it is several shades darker than the bride’s gown.” Although the popularity of summer weddings, when the heat can be extreme, has fostered the trend of grooms and groomsmen forgoing ties for open necked shirts, a little caution should be applied to this approach. “This look can work well,” says Paul Jerome from Talisman Menswear in Mooroopna. “But ties, especially ones with some colour, have the advantage of drawing the eye line up to the men’s faces and also maintain the general look if the guys are sitting down with their jackets oơ. As ties are generally the easiest and most eơective way for the guys to create a uniƤed colour look to match the girls, and provide some balance, if they’re not going to be wearing ties they need to consider how else they can achieve that.”
accessoriesfor men Paul from Talisman says: Keep it simple You want to match with the girls while maintaining your own elegance, so don’t go overboard. Simple accents of colour are all you need. Think about the photos The day will come and go in a blur but the wedding album is forever so put a lot of thought into what you want those visual memories to say about your taste. Attention to detail You can’t be expected to remember how you look in every suit you try on, so take digital photos so you have a record of the diơerent qualities of each outƤt. Don’t assume something won’t be available I am always happy to try and source what you want. I have all the contacts you’ll need and if all else fails I can make your accessories myself to create the perfect match.
Glenn from O’Keeffe Mensland says: Start early If you know your wedding date a year in advance start looking for your outƤt then. This will help avoid last minute stress as there will be plenty of other things to worry about in the weeks before your wedding. Be open to advice We have years of experience and can help you reƤne your ideas and let you know all the options and alternatives available. Don’t be afraid Come in and have a look and if you’re not sure what’s available or will work for you, ask. There’s no such thing as a stupid question. Set yourself apart On your wedding day you don’t want to blend into the crowd. Even if you’re striving for a more casual look make sure your outƤt provides a point of diơerence from your male guests.

Of all wedding traditions, one stands head and shoulders above all others for sheer delectability – the cake. Not only does it look fantastic and taste great but it also brings the sweetest of dreams. Dianne Davey from La Dolce Vita Cakes in Shepparton answers the questions that will help make your wedding cake one to remember.
What’s the most popular ƪavour?
Wedding cakes
For weddings we’ve done Mars Bar cakes, Kahlua mud, marble mud, and white or caramel mud but chocolate mud is still the most popular. Some people do still go for the traditional fruitcake but most often just for the top tier of the cake so they can keep it for their Ƥrst anniversary or christening. You can have virtually any ƪavour of cake you like but some, such as continental or butter cake, are best suited to dessert cakes. As for icing, marzipan is the most common but butter cream frosting, ganache and fudge icing are becoming more popular and work really well for giving your cake that extra special taste.
La Dolce Vita Cakes will create your cake for all
How far in advance should I order?
occasions. Proprietor
Ideally you should order your cake at least three months in advance but many brides book in as soon as they’ve set a date to avoid missing out. The longer we have to design, plan and decorate your cake the better, especially if we need to source special items such as diamantes or unusual dye colours.
Dianne Davey has 10 years cake decorating experience and works with an expert baker with more than 20 years experience to create exquisite one-off cakes.
How long will the cake keep? Fruit cake keeps the longest – up to two years if wrapped and stored in an air tight container in a cool place, but it doesn’t need to be kept refrigerated. Mud cakes will keep well in the fridge for up to two weeks but cakes including fresh cream should be kept in the fridge and eaten within a few days. All cakes except fresh cream cakes can be frozen for up to three months regardless of what type of icing they have.
La Dolce Vita Cakes is located at 648 Wyndham St, Shepparton next to the corner of Guthrie St. Ph: (03) 5821 1008.

Top tips for soon-to-be brides Our brides of the valley’s share with us their useful tips for planning your big day. “Don’t think that you have to try and visit every shop and business available. Keep it simple – just try and pick the right one and be happy with that decision. I just knew what I wanted and then ordered, booked and bought it. Also consider getting married on a week night – it’s cheaper. I got married on Carly MacDonald (1) a Thursday and everyone made it along.”
“Be organised! It sounds clichéd but the sooner you get things done the easier the weeks and days leading up to the wedding will be. Also, think outside the box when it comes to the traditions and decorations. Personalise the day to suit you as a couple rather than sticking to what the magazines tell you to do.” Verity Stubbs (5)
“Word of mouth is the best way of Ƥnding the services you are after and for the best prices, so talk to people who have recently married. There is an Australian Wedding Forum which is great to get answers from others who are getting married too. Make your bookings as early as possible and take a week oơ work early in your planning to meet with people and plan your wedding day.” Kellie Bruce (2)
“I enjoyed the last week having facials, massages, getting my nails done and all the fun stuơ. But if I were to go back I would have a facial and massage at least once a month, why not spoil yourself, it only happens once. And let any people that want to help, help. The more oơ your shoulders the better. Oh, and your special day goes really fast, so take in Alishia Wild (6) every moment, it only happens once.”
“Book as much as you can as early as you can. Also pick a super organised person to be your bridesmaid, they can make a world of diơerence leading up to the wedding and on the day.” Stacey Rae (3)
“It goes by so fast, so don’t focus too much on the stress of the day itself, try to focus on spending time with your Ƥancé, bridal party, siblings, parents – including them as much as possible in the planning process. Being able to delegate jobs and responsibilities to them means they’ll feel special for contributing to the wedding and you won’t have as much on Nicole Villani (7) your plate.”
“Make sure you surround yourself with people you can work with and are willing to work with your ideas so that together you can achieve the Danielle Cricelli (4) results you want for your wedding day.”

Engagement rings are something that will be treasured for life and a symbol of a man’s commitment to a woman. We talk to Jamie Thomas at Thomas Jewellers for some practical advice to help couples make the right choice for their engagement and wedding rings.
choosingyour
WEDDING RINGS W
hether he’s about to pop the question or you’re already engaged; it’s time to Ƥnd a ring…
Men who want to choose the ring, but are afraid it may not be the ring of their Ƥancée’s dreams, can rest assured.
“Usually the woman has done some research. That’s generally the way it goes,” Thomas Jewellers’ director Jamie Thomas said. “She’s done some window shopping and already has a picture in her mind of what ring design she wants.”
“We usually advise the man to consider a classical setting with a nice, big diamond. More often than not the girlfriend is over the moon by the selection. So we encourage the man to make the choice and think it’s great when he can surprise his Ƥancée.”
In deciding on a ring, Jamie outlines the steps to follow...
“If the woman is working in a hands on job, such as a nurse or working with children, we tend to steer them away from jewellery that sticks up or has sharp edges. We’ll recommend low, smooth, sleek settings. The type of gold is important too and in wedding rings the consideration applies to both men and women. Eighteen carat is softer, so it might be easier to go with nine carat gold that is a harder metal for people working in labour oriented jobs. ”
“We consider the style of the ring – whether the woman would like to have a single solitaire or another design such as a cluster of diamonds – and we’ll look at the shape of the diamonds and establish the type of gold for the band (rose, yellow or white gold), or platinum. Then we will look at the design, whether it should be a modern or antique style or more classical design,” he said. “More often than not, couples won’t know where to start so staơ can oơer guidance throughout the process. It’s a dream come true to help create an engagement ring that reƪects the personality and tastes of its owner. We get a great buzz being involved in the exciting process of helping a male choose a ring for his future bride,” Jamie said. He said about 20 per cent of men choose the engagement ring themselves while the others propose Ƥrst and bring their Ƥancées with them to make the selection.
“Diamonds are the number one stones by a long way. They are the most precious and the most beautiful. Popular modern designs include the bezel setting – a diamond with gold surrounding it or a tension setting – a diamond wedged between two sides of gold.” Choosing your wedding ring… The wedding rings are the next purchase after an engagement ring. “We encourage couples to choose a wedding ring that complements their engagement ring. We match the metals and the shape of the band and work out whether the wedding ring needs to have diamonds in it or not, if it should be straight or shaped to Ƥt the ring and we will also consider a plain or patterned style,” Jamie said.
Jamie said Australia tends to follow European trends.
“While we encourage males to choose the engagement ring for their Ƥancée with our help and assistance, the bride will always be involved in choosing her wedding ring,” he said.
“We seem to be a couple of years behind. When Europe went white gold, Australia suddenly followed. Now European trends are going back to yellow gold,” he said.
“A high percentage of customers also have their wedding rings engraved. The engraving will generally list a name and date with a message of love.” ❚
Engagement ring trends…
“White gold is quite popular because it shows oơ the diamonds. There’s been a bit of a shift away from the diamond solitaires to the one diamond in the middle with little diamonds all the way around it, but diamonds still rule over coloured stones,” Jamie said. GV BRIDE AND GROOM FEBRUARY 2009

Your wedding day should be a reflection of your personality. From the style of your dress, to the type of cake – everything represents you. If you want to make a statement on your wedding day, or want your guests to remember that intricate detail, then consider taking a spin on things and adding modern ideas on an old tradition. cupcake cake
photo coasters
Not sure what kind of cake to choose? Go for a decorative cupcake cake. Each cupcake can be made to your liking and then can be given to your guests as dessert at the end of the night. They look fantastic, are delicious and add a bit of character to your wedding day.
A great surprise for your wedding guests! Place coasters next to nametags where your guests will be seated. A great gift for them to take home too.

hand tying ceremony
Instead of a guestbook, put a blank canvas up for people to sign. It gives people more room to express how they feel and makes a great piece of art in your home.
Hand fasting is an ancient Celtic marriage ritual and if you ever wondered where the expression ‘tying the knot’ came from, now you know! It is a symbolic way of showing that you are joined to one another.
At the end of your ceremony you can release a box of butterƪies. The butterƪies symbolise new beginnings, good fortune and joy and when released, the butterƪies carry forth the good news of your love and commitment for each other. They can look great in photos too.
Would you like your mums to feel a little more a part of your ceremony? It’s a great way to include the most important people in your life. There’s no rule in who should sign your registry, so asking your mums can make them feel extra special.

Although, just like everything else, weddings are subject to trends, it seems extremely unlikely that people will ever stop tying the knot. GV BRIDE AND GROOM FEBRUARY 2009
A spider found in a wedding dress means good luck according to the English. The groom carries the bride across the threshold to bravely protect her from evil spirits lurking below. Saturday (the main day of choice) is the unluckiest wedding day, according to English folklore. Wednesday is considered the best day to marry, although Monday is for wealth and Tuesday is for health. According to Hindu tradition rain on your wedding day is considered good luck. Egyptian women pinch the bride on her wedding day for good luck. Instead of rice, peas are thrown at Czech newlyweds. To ensure she will never do without, a Swedish bride puts a silver coin from her father and a gold coin from her mother in each shoe. Traditionally, Moroccan women take a milk bath to purify themselves before their wedding ceremony. In Holland, a pine tree is planted outside the newlyweds home as a symbol of fertility and luck. Three Ɵmes a bridesmaid, never a bride is an old charm that can be broken by being a bridesmaid seven Ɵmes.
