Frosty Season Home Hacks

Written by: Lily Jeffries

Let’s face it – our top priorities throughout Winter (aside from eating all the comfort foods we can get our hands on) are to stay warm, and not get sick. Use these helpful home hacks to protect yourself from the chill and make sure you and your family stay as healthy as possible.

Toasty warm Getting into a cosy, warm bed has got to be one of the greatest feelings on earth. While there are so many great electric blankets out there that are easy to use and won’t double the electricity bill – there’s always a better, safer alternative. Although hot water bottles have been used for decades, there’s

always the risk of minor burns or leakage. How about a DIY rice heat pack? Homemade heat packs are so easy to make, using only a few ingredients and they last for years! Begin with a piece of fabric (any size you like, cotton is best), fold in half and sew the edges together, leaving a 3cm gap. Turn inside out so that the edges are covered. Fill 2/3 of the pack with rice – white rice is cheap and easy to source, but other kinds are just as good (except instant rice packs, steer clear of those). Once the bag is 2/3 full, add your favourite scent! Half a cup of dried lavender will aid in reducing anxiety and is a natural ingredient for a longer, deeper sleep. Dried rose petals smell lovely and the sweet aroma will waft through your bed, leaving your sheets smelling like a spring

garden. Peppermint essential oil is great for nasal decongestion caused by colds, and will help to clear your airways while you’re sleeping. Citrus oils are fresh and fruity, inviting you to think of warmer, Summer days as you snuggle into bed. Once you’ve decided on your preferred scent, turn the edges inwards and sew up the gap. It’s that easy! Heat for a minute in the microwave, remove and test. Continue until desired temperature (remember, it doesn’t need to be too hot) and place in your bed or anywhere you need some extra warmth. Another tip is to use a cotton sock and just tie off the end! Whatever size pack you make, it’s guaranteed to help you warm up on these chilly Winter nights.

July/2019 Immunity Boosters We’re all familiar with the fact that lemon and ginger is not only a legendary combination, but super good for our bodies, especially come Winter time. There are all sorts of benefits, from reducing nausea, kickstarting your metabolism, weight loss, strengthening the immune system and improving skin and gut health. So why aren’t more people adding these amazing natural ingredients to their weekly routines? Maybe we’re just lazy, or we’ve forgotten how great they are? Either way – it’s time to boost our energy levels, fight off sickness and add some awesome Vitamin C into our routines with these top 2 ingredients. A quick and simple green juice has 5 ingredients: Spinach, Cucumber, Apple, Lemon and Ginger. It’s that easy! And you can find everything at your local supermarket, so no excuses! Throw your desired amounts into a blender or juicer (go easy on the ginger, as a little goes a long way) and Hey Presto! You have yourself an ultra- healthy, immunity-boosting, flu-fighting tonic! Who doesn’t love a warming cup of tea first thing in the morning, or at the end of a long day? Swap your English Breakfast and Earl Grey for a simple lemon and ginger concoction. Grate a teaspoon of ginger into a cup, cover with hot water and let it steam for 3 minutes. Pour through a strainer into your favourite mug, add lemon juice and a few slices of lemon, top with more hot water. You can mix in some honey as a natural sweetener if you like, and that’s all you need for a spicy and refreshing herbal tea! Give these comforting home hacks a go this month, and Create A Home that’s toasty warm and illness-free this Winter!

Keep the mould and mildew at bay

Written by: Lily Jeffries

We often view Winter as the season of hibernation, a time when plants and animals rest, burrow and take shelter from the severe elements. But that’s not entirely true – everywhere there are still signs of growth, new things sprouting, spreading, searching for sunlight. It’s just unfortunate that these things are mould and mildew, and we certainly do not want them in our homes. Here are some natural, eco-friendly and antibacterial solutions to keep the mould and mildew at bay this Winter.

Make your own cleaning spray This recipe for a homemade, allnatural cleaning spray is a great

solution to harsh, bleach-filled chemical alternatives. The best thing is that the ingredients are cheap, it’s non-toxic to humans and pets, and it really works wonders for bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms! Start with an aluminium spray bottle, or re-use one from a prior cleaner (cutting down on plastic waste is always a good thing! Just make sure to properly rinse it out first), add 3 cups of warm water and half a cup of white vinegar. White vinegar is a great anti-fungal and antibacterial ingredient! Then add 15-20 drops of your favourite essential oils. You can purchase these from a range of local shops, or grab them cheaper online! Citrus essential

oils such as lemon, orange and lime have a pleasant smell and naturally cut through grease and germs on countertops, doorknobs and the like! Lavender, rosemary and tea tree oils are also fantastic, as their antibacterial properties work with the vinegar to bust through dirt and grime. Whatever oils you choose, this is an amazing DIY cleaner that will leave your home fresh and mould-free all year round.

Get crafty in the kitchen Our kitchen is where we spend a lot of time over winter, preparing delicious, comforting meals, catching up with the family,

July/2019 brewing coffee or tea to warm us up in the morning – it’s only natural that in here, things will start getting a little… stale. Since it’s often not an option to open the windows on a freezing cold night, cooking smells and spores from our food can swirl around the kitchen, settling behind cupboards and adding unpleasant aromas that last for days afterwards. To combat these nasty smells, there are some easy tips and tricks you can use. Leaving out a small bowl of vinegar next to the stove while cooking, and overnight afterwards, can help to soak up some of the fumes (particularly from meat or fish) and purify the air. How about lighting some scented candles while cooking? These also create a lovely, romantic feel while you’re enjoying dinner and will leave a nice fragrance in the room once blown out. Candles have been used to eliminate smells for hundreds of years, as once extinguished the smoke draws in smells and masks them. But perhaps you need something a little more heavy duty? How about simmering a pot of homemade potpourri! Bring a small saucepan of water to the boil, add a combination of orange peel, lemon peel, cloves, allspice, nutmeg and cinnamon. This is an easy process which will leave your kitchen smelling like a Christmas dessert, and definitely mask those cooking smells! Then you can wipe down all surfaces with your homemade antibacterial spray and your kitchen will be smelling and looking as good as new within minutes! While we try to stay warm and toasty, let’s make sure that we’re also hibernating in a home that is as clean as can be, free from mould spores and other nasties that could make us sick! With these useful DIY cleaning tips, you’ll be able to Create A Home that’s mould, mildew and smellfree this Winter.

Cold Critters

Written by: Lily Jeffries

With those thick frosts appearing and the temperatures dropping, things are really starting to get cold! Luckily, we have the shelter of our warm homes, the pleasure of soft bedding and the ability to switch on our heaters whenever we choose. But this isn’t the case for our animal friends! Take a few moments to consider the ways we can protect our homes from unwanted Winter pests, as well as care for the animals we do want to keep warm and safe.

Avoiding pests indoors and out With mice and rats searching for a cosy spot out of the elements, we have to be extra vigilant in sealing off any entrances to our

homes or garages. Take a walk around your property, looking for any holes, gaps or entry points and block these up to reduce your risk of a family of rodents making a new home in your property this Winter! Similarly, ensure that all outdoor bins and composts are fully sealed at the base and have a good-fitting lid. As for indoors, we know insects make their way inside to escape the wet weather. While there are many sprays around, try a natural and ecofriendly alternative that won’t be harmful for humans or domestic pets – Lavender. Lavender has a really pleasant aroma and is a natural insect deterrent! You can hang a bundle of dried lavender, a sachet or piece of cloth soaked in lavender essential oil in your closets, bedrooms or main living areas and you’ll be bug free!

Considering our animal friends Because Tasmanian birds stick around for the Winter and don’t take to flying south, it’s a lovely idea to make their homes a little warmer if you have the time. While most birds will already have an established nest, there would be many that would appreciate a covered bird house tucked into a tree or placed on a sturdy pole with easy access. You can purchase a range of bird houses from local hardware stores, or build your own, but be sure to place some straw or woodchips in there for insulation. That way, any lucky birds that come across it will be protected, warm and very grateful! Whether you have an indoor dog or one that is happy in a kennel on the deck, dogs feel the cold just as we

do. Blankets are great for padding dog beds and kennels, but you may like to go the extra mile and place a homemade heat pack in their beds for a few hours before bedtime. Your furry pal will be more than happy to leave your side when the time comes if their bed is just as warm as yours! Just remember to remove the pack before they settle in for the night. If you have the spare time, it’s a lovely thing to consider what you can do to help our animal friends, and Create A Home for them that’s warm, protected and comfortable this Winter.
