Cold, Colder, Coldest.
Written by: Lily Jeffries
Have you felt the chill in the air yet? Seen that thin, icy layer of frost on your windscreen in the early morning? Woken up to find your windows leaking condensation because its significantly warmer inside than out? We can’t deny it any longer, Winter is on its way. All we can do (aside from rugging up, preparing for that inevitable spike in the heating bill and generally complaining to strangers) is be ready for it. If you’re from Tasmania, you’ll know exactly what you’re in for over the next 5 months. However, it always seems to be colder than any of us remember, and no matter how thick your puffy jacket is – that Southern wind still chills the bones. Your home is a haven of warmth, where you can relax in less than 3 jumpers, a thick scarf and gloves – maybe you can actually walk around with no socks on! But it’s not all chill and no
work – there are some necessary things you need to do to get your home Winter-ready. Think about the way you heat your home. Have you been relying on the same, worn system for the last decade? Longer? Now is the perfect time for an upgrade. Don’t stress if you’re worried about the cost – there are so many fantastic, modern heating options that actually save you money. Recycling heat from other rooms with a heat transfer kit is a clever way to get the most out of the power you’re already using, plus it’s easy to install!
What about a more economical and cleaner alternative to a wood heater? Pellet fire models use recycled sawdust, are environmentally friendly and carbon neutral, plus there are so many attractive designs to suit any space. Browse the specials in this issue for
more information on the great heating options offered from local businesses throughout the state. It’s the best time to check all your windows and doors for any drafts, leaks or damaged seals. You don’t want to be heading to the bathroom in the middle of the night and catch a cold from the freezing air coming down the hallway! Light a candle and carefully place it near the places you believe there may be a draft – if the fame flickers then you know you need to fix that spot quick smart! Pay your roof and gutters a visit. The dry Autumn leaves will no doubt have fallen into tricky spots,
and unless you’re looking for a free yet highly destructive water feature coming off your roof, then it’s probably a good idea to get up on the ladder and tidy things up this weekend. Make sure those smoke alarms are up to scratch. When you’ve got multiple heaters going, plus electric blankets and the like – it’s always wise to make sure you have a working smoke detector and fire safety plan. Check out the other articles in this issue for more tips on how to Create A Home that’s warm and safe this chilly season.

Winter Warmers
Written by: Lily Jeffries
What is it about cold weather that makes us choose casserole and buttery carbs over crunchy salads and smoothies? Is it that we’re just trying to get warm? Whether that’s on the outside or inside – it doesn’t matter, but it has to involve pasta, right? Well we’re here to embrace the Winter diet, giving you some delicious ideas and recipes to cook up this week. If you can cook it in the oven, then it’s almost guaranteed to be a great Winter dish. Try a homemade, creamy chicken pot pie with a crispy crust – a family favourite no matter how many veggies you try to hide inside it. What about the humble casserole? You can do so much with a one pot meal like a casserole, and no matter what protein you choose or spices you add, its going to be hearty and delicious – which is all we want on a cold night. Try slow cooking lamb, potatoes, pumpkin, onions and Moroccan spices together. The smell wafting through the house
will bring everyone to the table before it’s even ready! Similarly, chucking a load of fresh ingredients in a pot and making a good ol’ fashioned Winter stew is also an easy dinner option. Beef, carrot, sweet potatoes, with some chicken stock and fresh herbs (maybe some chilli for a little extra heat) will leave you full and satisfied. Plus think of the tasty leftovers, which no doubt will taste better once the herbs have been left to intensify in flavour overnight. How about a spicy vegetarian laksa? The perfect combination of heat, tangy flavour, crunchy veggies and coconut creaminess. Yum. There’s one dish in particular that never fails to warm up its legion of dedicated followers come a rainy afternoon – pumpkin soup. Who doesn’t love a bowl of pumpkin soup? Plus, there’s so much you can do with it, such as adding sweet potato, parmesan, chilli and cumin, or cracked pepper and chives. Experiment with your spice
rack and see how you can elevate a simple bowl of pumpkin soup to a whole new, delectable level. Stocking up your pantry with herbs and spices is a fast and easy way to add variety to your food, but also reduce your cooking costs. There’s a variety of dishes – from stir-fry’s to casseroles, pastas to soups – that can be completely changed with the addition of different herbs. Using the same ingredients, such as pork cutlets and roast vege, you could try a tangy lemon and thyme drizzle, or change it up the following night by rubbing the pork in smoked paprika, garlic and onion powder. There’s so many variations and different combinations – it’s an easy and cheaper road to a great dinner once you have a stocked
spice rack. Winter isn’t all about the savoury dishes though! How about a sweet and soft bread and butter pudding to finish off the night? There’s so many easy recipes, all using standard pantry ingredients such as milk, sugar, eggs and cinnamon, plus it’s a great way to use up the last of the bread! Stewed stone fruits and ice cream is also a crowd favourite. Roughly chop apples, peaches and apricots, or try something different such as rhubarb and strawberries, place in a pot with some hot water and a little brown sugar, leave to simmer and soften – then heap on the ice cream! You’ll be going back for seconds, promise. Create A Home full of tasty, warming food this Winter.
