What’s not to like about Easter? While it remains a significant Christian celebration, it’s also a fabulous five-day holiday period that extends from Good Friday to the end of Easter Tuesday. Many Tasmanians load up the car and take the opportunity to head off to their favourite Tassie destination before the cold weather kicks in. Easter is one of the busiest times of the year on our roads, and one of the most dangerous in terms of accidents and breakdowns. Last year, across Australia, 11 people died on our roads over the Easter period, with the majority of these deaths being the result of excessive speed. Then there are the hundreds of motorists whose Easter holiday will be severely compromised by a vehicle breakdown that could so easily have been prevented.
Servicing your vehicle In all the excitement of planning what you’ll be doing over your short Easter
break, it’s easy to forget that your vehicle will be relied upon to get you there and back safely. Of course, there will always be people who’ll take the punt that the strange noise they’re hearing with their starter motor is nothing to worry about, or the tyres with next to no tread are still ok, or the engine oil that should have been replaced 20,000 kilometres ago, is not a big deal. Wrong - It’s asking for trouble. Invariably, these will be the people who’ll be stuck by the side of the road over Easter, kilometres from the nearest town, and wishing they’d carried out a basic car service before they’d left. (It’s a terrible way to be spending your Easter break).
In reality, the majority of vehicle breakdowns are preventable if you carry out some simple maintenance measures prior to any sort of road trip. The easiest way is to organise for a standard motor vehicle service with a respected automotive repairer, which you should book in a few weeks before your trip. In a standard motor vehicle service, your mechanic will get your car up on the hoist to replace the engine oil, the spark plugs, the fuel filter, tune the engine, test the battery, check the level and refill brake fluid/clutch fluid, check for proper operation of lights and wipers, inspect the brake pads, tyre pressures, and more.

Generally, this type of service can be carried out for around $150 - $200, and should be undertaken on a regular basis.
The top four reasons for a vehicle breakdown 1. Flat Batteries 2. Wheels and Tyres 3. Electrical Faults 4. Vehicle Lock-outs Source. NRMA 2017
Flat or faulty car batteries Have you noticed your battery is sounding a little different lately? Is it taking longer to start? If that’s the case, then chances are your battery is on the way out, and you’ll need to replace it with a new one. Faulty or flat batteries are one of the most common cause of vehicle breakdowns. If you’re lucky then you may get three to five years with a new car battery, but once they start to go, you don’t have very long before they cark it altogether.
Even if you’re not noticing anything unusual, you should keep an eye out for dodgy clamp connections and corroded terminals that will reduce the life of the battery. By applying some water with a scrubbing brush and some steel wool around the terminals, you can reduce the build up of corrosion, and keep your battery in good condition.
Remember, every car battery has a shelf life. If you’re in any doubt, for around $150 you can purchase a new car battery, and give yourself one less thing to worry about this Easter.
Enjoy the journey With so many local and mainland holiday
makers on our roads over Easter, you may need to allow some extra time to arrive at your destination. This time of year, some extra patience behind the wheel will go a long way (not that there’s anywhere in Tassie that’s too far away). Wherever you may be travelling, enjoy the journey and have a safe and happy Easter.

Toyota: New HiLux designed and Best engineered in Australia January sales in 10 years
Market leader Toyota has opened its 2018 scorecard in emphatic style by achieving its best January sales in a decade, according to official figures released today. Toyota’s 10-year January high of 15,306 new-vehicle sales included record first month deliveries of the top-selling HiLux, reinforcing its position as Australia’s best-selling vehicle. Toyota’s tally was the strongest January result for the brand’s local dealers since 2008 - and a gain of 21.9 per cent over the same month last year. HiLux, entering its 50th year in showrooms, has established a commanding sales lead with a January record of 3,860 deliveries. LandCruiser Prado also joined the January record-breaking with 1,169 vehicles sold, up 10 per cent on January 2017, ensuring Prado maintained its leadership of the large SUV segment. Other segment leaders for Toyota were Camry, LandCruiser wagon, HiAce van and HiAce bus. Toyota’s vice-president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said the impressive January result continued the company’s sales momentum. Mr Hanley said Toyota’s efforts to offer outstanding customer service continued to pay dividends and build strength in the brand. “Our SUV sales in January were up more than 40 per cent compared with a year ago, and this remarkable growth was almost matched by our light-commercial vehicles,” Mr Hanley said. “Together with our dealers, we are committed to offering ever-better vehicles and service. With the arrival of new models including the introduction of a trio of daring high-end HiLux models, we hope Toyota’s success will continue strongly this year,” he said. Advertorial
Toyota’s three new “Halo” HiLux variants due in April this year have a strong Aussie accent due to an extensive development program carried out by the company’s Melbourne-based designers and engineers. Aimed at off-road enthusiasts, the comprehensive upgrades that result in the new HiLux Rugged and Rugged X variants were designed, engineered and validated in Australia with support from the parent company in Japan and Toyota in Thailand. The development program involved computer simulations, prototype manufacture, bench testing and real world evaluation to confirm strength and durability of the vehicle and individual components. Heading the new models, HiLux Rugged X lives up to its name by incorporating a high-tensile alloy bash plate, winch compatible steel front bar, LED driving lights, recovery points, rock rails, load carrying sports bar and other heavy-duty components.
Toyota Australia’s product planning and development general manager Rod Ferguson said the HiLux project highlighted the local team’s capability to develop engaging models that address the specific requirements of Australian buyers. “Our team understands local customer usage and tastes, the extremes of our local environment as well as requirements for off-road use, unsealed roads and the challenges of dust and water crossings,” Mr Ferguson said. “They have developed these high strength components and integrated them fully to build on the strength and durability of HiLux while maintaining the performance of key safety systems,” he said. “For example, the Rugged X bash plate is made from high-tensile alloy, significantly improving protection from rugged terrain while minimising weight increase. Local engineering and testing also ensures it works in conjunction with the steel front bar and existing underbody protection.”
Mr Ferguson said the project was a logical extension of the local team’s work in producing the HiLux Tonka concept, unveiled in March last year. He said the new models also benefited from the Australian team’s extensive involvement in developing the current generation HiLux, including suspension, underbody protection, tuning of electronic safety systems and 650,000km of local testing. “It was natural for our team to focus on HiLux: it’s Australia’s best-selling vehicle and owners customise their HiLux more than any other model in our range. “In the spirit of the concept car, we’ve further enhanced the off-road toughness of the already highly capable HiLux. “Australian buyers will also appreciate the peace-of-mind knowing that these new vehicles have been developed to Toyota’s rigorous standards, will be certified to Australian Design Rules and attract full warranty coverage,” Mr Ferguson said.
It is joined by HiLux Rugged, which is focused on toughness and off-road performance. It provides enthusiasts with an ideal vehicle for getting off the beaten track that its aggressive front-end design, including a steel bull bar. A third new model, the premium and sporty HiLux Rogue was styled by the Australian design team and developed in close collaboration with Toyota engineers in Thailand. The dynamic and recreational styling of the Rogue is tailored to many markets around the world - another example of the strong capability that exists within Toyota’s local operation. Advertorial

The legend returns: Toyota Supra reborn Toyota has revived the name and spirit of its most celebrated sports car, confirming that it plans to produce a new generation of the legendary Supra.
“There has been huge public interest in a modern revival of the Supra legend and this concept points to a sports car deserving of the famous name,” he said.
The carmaker made its long awaited commitment to reviving the famous Supra nameplate when it staged the world premiere of the dramatically styled Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept at the Geneva International Motor Show.
“Revealing a racing concept ahead of a production model highlights that motorsport is Toyota’s proving ground of choice for high-performance vehicles.
Toyota said the compact two door concept, with its front engine, rear wheel drive configuration, demonstrates the potential for a fun-to-drive car that can deliver high performance both on road and track. The GR Supra Racing Concept provides a huge visual clue to the fact that it heralds Supra’s return: the large “90” race number on its doors is the codename for the fifth-generation Supra, following the A40, A60, A70 and A80 series produced between 1978 and 2002. Toyota Australia’s vice-president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said the racing concept reflected the global company’s focus on using motorsport to help accelerate development of production models. “Supra is one of the most beloved Toyota cars of all time and its nameplate continues to command enormous respect,” Mr Hanley said.
“The GR Supra Racing Concept makes it clear Toyota is developing the Supra to be a true driver’s car.”
Design, chassis and equipment features The racing concept’s dramatic bodywork makes extensive use of strong but lightweight composite materials for elements such as the wide front and rear bumpers, front splitter and rear diffuser, side skirts, door mirror housings and the large rear wing. The bonnet is crafted from the same materials and features louvred air inlets. The windscreen and side windows are made of plastic. The concept’s chassis features lowered front and rear suspension using Toyota components. BBS racing wheels with centre-nut attachment are fitted with Michelin racing tyres. The braking system uses
Brembo™ Racing callipers and discs and there is a racing exhaust. The cabin is entirely competition focused and is fitted with a racing dashboard, OMP driver’s seat and safety harness. OMP has also supplied the quick-release steering wheel, mounted on a racing column and equipped with a paddle-shift system. The doors are lined with carbon fibre panels and the dashboard includes a racing display. Competition safety requirements are met by a full roll cage and fire extinguishers,
and the fuel and brake lines, pedal box, battery and wiring looms are all designed to competition standard. The GR in the name of the concept comes from Toyota GAZOO Racing, the international umbrella organisation for Toyota’s global sporting program and producer of performance focused GR-branded cars. The debut of the GR Supra Racing Concept is similar to Toyota’s reveal of the C-HR Racing at the 2016 Geneva show, almost a year ahead of the arrival of the production version of the compact SUV.

On the road to autonomous driving: Deep Learning needs real, global road traffic
Deep Learning in country-specific, real road traffic plays a central role on the road to autonomous driving. This is shown by Mercedes-Benz Intelligent World Drive, which ended at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas after five months. A test vehicle on the basis of the current S Class completed a challenging study trip on five continents in order to “learn” in automated test drives in real traffic. From zebra crossings on Chinese motorways, turning off right from the left-hand lane in Melbourne, Australia, pedestrian traffic on all kinds of roads in South Africa or a temporary driving ban in the immediate vicinity of stopping school buses in the USA – on every continent the S Class faced challenges which will have an influence on the driving characteristics of future autonomous vehicles. Automated and autonomous vehicles have to know about these country-specific particularities and understand them in their respective context in order to be able to make the correct driving decisions. The Intelligent World Drive also underlines just how important the international harmonisation of the legal framework for automated and autonomous driving
and its infrastructure is, in particular of lane markings and traffic signs. “The Intelligent World Drive makes it clear that autonomous driving requires global development activities and test drives” says Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “Automated and autonomous vehicles need international learning material from actual road traffic in order to understand traffic situations and to be prepared for different scenarios.”
Intelligent World Drive provides an insight into the complexity of global challenges With the test vehicle on the basis of a semi-automated S Class test drives were carried out in Germany, China, Australia, South Africa and the USA. The differences in the countries give a small insight into the complexity of global challenges in the development of automated and autonomous driving functions. In particular the national particularities in terms of infrastructure, traffic regulations and the conduct of other road users place very different requirements on the sensors and algorithms of the vehicle. It also becomes apparent just how important high-resolution maps could become for the development of higher automation. Daimler AG is thus involved in the map service HERE and is working on faster implementation and updating of even more precise navigation data.
Different traffic signs and road markings worldwide
complex turning procedure and take other road users into account.
When it comes to traffic signs for speed limits alone, there are many different variants. In the USA, for example, their shape and size are fundamentally different from the usual round metal signs in Europe and China. In Australia, electronic displays with variable speed limits are used. Special displays indicate the current speed limit. They are equipped with bright white LEDs, a red LED ring and a yellow LED warning lamp and can also depict simple symbols and letters as well as speed limits. In some cases they are positioned next to one another and can change their display within a short time. This demands more of, for instance, the Multi Purpose Camera (MPC) and the quality of digital maps. Speed limits or even data which only apply at certain times of day are equally as challenging.
Road and lane markings are not standardised around the world either. In China, for example, the zebra crossing has a double meaning. In the city it marks a pedestrian crossing, on the motorway, on the other hand, it shows the minimum distance between vehicles driving behind one another. On multi-lane Interstates and Freeways in the USA there are often dedicated lanes for car pools of at least two people. They can be separated from the other lanes by two uninterrupted yellow lines or by metal guard rails. It can be difficult for the vehicle sensors to detect and correctly interpret them as special lanes. In the USA there are also what are known as Botts’ Dots. These dots for lane marking are plastic or ceramic and also put special demands on lane detection. California is thus the first federal state planning to abolish the Botts’ Dots and to standardise the lane markings for future autonomous driving.
A prime example of country-specific traffic signs and rules is the “Hook Turn” sign in Melbourne city centre. It controls the procedure of turning off from roads which are also used by trams. If you want to turn off right over the tram tracks in this country with left-side traffic you have to move to the outer left lane and first let the traffic straight ahead and the tram pass before you are allowed to turn off right. The junction can only be crossed if your own traffic light is on red and that of the cross traffic switches to green. The sensors and algorithms of an automated and autonomous vehicle must be in a position to detect the “Hook Turn” sign, to comprehend the context of the
What makes things more difficult is the fact that in some countries signs and lane markings are sometimes missing. So even for experienced drivers it is difficult at mega junctions and on multi-lane roundabouts in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai to select the correct lane for turning off. In South Africa missing stop or warning signs in front of speed bumps pose challenges when it comes to the performance of sensors and the quality of digital map data.

Detect country-specific traffic situations and understand them in context Another special feature of road traffic in the USA are school buses and the traffic regulations associated with them. As soon as they stop the traffic in their immediate vicinity must also stop. No vehicle is allowed to pass, not even in the opposite direction. Automated and autonomously driving vehicles must learn to distinguish school buses from all other vehicles in relevant traffic situations, and recognise whether they are stopping to let children get in and out. Equally challenging for vehicle intelligence is pedestrian conduct in South Africa, which bears no resemblance to that in Europe, Australia or the USA. Not only are there many more pedestrians about here, they also frequently walk on the road itself and sometimes unexpectedly cross the carriageway. Future systems must reliably detect such pedestrians even at higher road speeds and interpret their movement correctly. Overtaking manoeuvres on single-lane roads are the norm in South Africa, with the slower vehicle driving on the hard shoulder and the overtaking vehicle driving past it at clear points in spite of the broken line. Future vehicles must learn to use this tolerance depending on the situation. To do this they would have to be able to tell whether the road is free and clear enough for overtaking – or whether an overtaking manoeuvre is too dangerous due to bends or oncoming traffic. It goes without saying that appropriate infrastructure measures help to facilitate faster and more extensive autonomous driving. For example, where the danger of wild animals crossing is concerned kangaroos in Australia and springboks in South Africa represent a particular challenge. Depending on their posture they have a different shape and are therefore very difficult to identify definitively. According
11
to statistics from an Australian insurance company, kangaroos cause nine out of ten road accidents in which animals are involved nationally.
Worldwide development activities are the key to systems which learn The special country-specific features to which the S Class test vehicle was subjected on five continents underscore the necessity of w o r l d w i d e development activities and test drives. This is the only way to develop learning-capable systems and algorithms which are in a position to cope with a multitude of situations reliably and safely. Alongside programming concrete routines for clearly defined applications, this mainly involves establishing strategies for solutions in unexpected situations. All the information and experience gathered on the Intelligent World Drive are flowing into the further development of more highly automated systems on the road to autonomous driving. Thanks to the global Research & Development network of Daimler AG it is possible for Mercedes-Benz to incorporate potential country-specific traffic conditions into the development of automated driving functions and thus put them in the vehicle more quickly. The Mercedes-Benz Research & Development Centres in North America and China have their own test
vehicles which collect local information on infrastructure and traffic habits plus carry out test drives for validation of driver assistance systems in the field. In other core markets Mercedes-Benz is increasingly cooperating with the local market companies. Since spring 2017, for example, Mercedes-Benz Australia has been testing automated driving functions in Australia and New Zealand in close cooperation with the Research and Development Centre in Germany. The Intelligent World Drive supplements these extensive validation projects. With a multitude of test vehicles Mercedes-Benz is gathering information internationally for the continuous advancement and improvement of automated driving functions. To enable more highly automated and autonomous driving functions to be tested in real road traffic and then to enter series use, further international harmonisation of the legal framework is necessary. There
is a need for action, especially in relation to international agreements on road traffic law, which set the binding framework for national legislation and which currently still compulsorily require a driver. Further changes are important with regard to vehicle certification and data storage.
CASE – on the way to autonomous driving Autonomous driving is one of the four strategic areas for the future which form an integral part of the corporate strategy of Daimler AG under the acronym CASE. CASE – these letters will shape the future of mobility. They stand for networking (Connected), autonomous driving (Autonomous), flexible use (Shared & Services) and electric powertrains (Electric). The aim is to shape intuitive mobility for the customers through intelligent dovetailing of all four CASE fields.

New Volvo XC40 named 2018 European Car of the Year
Volvo brings home another big prize to feature on its shiny gallery The new Volvo XC40 small SUV has been named the 2018 European Car of the Year ahead of the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. It is the first win of this prestigious award for Volvo Cars, the premium car maker. “Winning this award with our new XC40 is perfect timing,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “Volvo now has three globally available SUVs in its range for the first time. The XC40 will be a strong contributor to further growth, taking us into a new and fast-growing small SUV segment.” The XC40 win means that the complete line-up of new global Volvo SUVs have each been named Car of the Year in either Europe or North America. Both the large XC90 and mid-size XC60 were awarded the North American Truck/Utility of the Year title in the past two years. The 2018 European Car of the Year award follows other recent recognition for the XC40, including the Car of the Year award by leading UK automotive publication What Car?
The XC40 sets a new standard in its segment in terms of design, connectivity and safety technology. Early orders in excess of 20,000 cars across Europe and the US indicate that this is an appealing combination for customers. The XC40 roll-out will soon extend to China – the world’s biggest car market – where Volvo is expecting similar strong interest. The XC40 is the first model on Volvo Cars’ new compact modular vehicle architecture (CMA), which will underpin all upcoming cars in the 40 Series, including fully electrified vehicles. Co-developed together with Geely, CMA provides the company with the necessary economies of scale for this segment. The XC40 is also the first Volvo to come with a car-sharing feature, enabled via Volvo’s digital key technology and its connected services platform Volvo On Call. XC40 owners can simply share their car with family and friends without having to hand over a physical key. In another first, the XC40 launched Volvo Cars’ new subscription service, Care by Volvo, which offers car access via a monthly flat-fee subscription rather than ownership. Care by Volvo makes having a car as transparent, easy and hassle free as having a phone. Safety and driver assistance features on the XC40 include Volvo Cars’ Pilot Assist system, City Safety, Run-off Road protection and mitigation, Cross Traffic
alert with brake support and the 360° Camera that helps drivers manoeuvre their car into tight parking spaces. The XC40 also offers ingenious interior design and storage ideas with more functional storage space in the doors and under the seats, a special space for phones including inductive charging, a foldout hook for small bags, plus a removable waste bin in the tunnel console. In 2017, the company announced its commitment to electrify all Volvo Cars
launched from 2019. In line with this leadership position in electrification, a hybridised as well as a pure electric powertrain option for the XC40 will be added later. “We have a clear strategy for growth and we are committed to leading in automotive safety, connectivity services and electrification,” said Håkan Samuelsson. “The XC40 reflects that commitment, and looking at the response from our customers and from the COTY jury here today, we are on the right track.”

Carrera Cup’s Michelin Junior Team confirmed
Four young racers have been confirmed to form the top tier of the newly expanded Porsche Michelin Junior Programme Australia. Jaxon Evans, Jordan Love, Adam Garwood and Cameron Hill will enter the 2018 Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup Australia season as the championship’s four Michelin Juniors. As part of the programme, all four drivers will be provided financial benefits by way of entry fee support and an allocation of Michelin race tyres, along with access to training, mentorship and education throughout the racing season. Evans enters the season with the most Carrera Cup experience of the four Michelin Juniors, entering this weekend’s Adelaide opener after an impressive debut season in 2017, in which the Queensland based driver claimed five race wins and two outright round wins. Like Evans, West Australian Love entered Carrera Cup after graduating
from the feeder Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia series. Love dominated the 2017 GT3 Cup Challenge series, winning the title before competing in the final three Carrera Cup rounds of last season. Love’s announcement as a 2018 Michelin Junior sees him continue in the Junior Programme after being the sole Porsche Junior driver throughout 2017. While Garwood and Hill have limited experience in Porsche one-make championships, both bring significant success in other racing series. Garwood enters the 2018 Carrera Cup season as a Touring Car Masters race winner while Hill joins the series as the 2017 Toyota 86 Racing Series runner-up and, before his move to tin-top racing, the 2015 Australian Formula Ford Champion. All Michelin Junior drivers will be gunning for the Jamey Blaikie Scholarship – the pinnacle of the Junior Programme which will see the highest ranked Michelin Junior in Carrera Cup at the time of

Jaxon Evans “I can’t wait for the start of the season in Adelaide. Now entering my second Carrera Cup season, it’s great to head into this weekend as one of the inaugural Michelin Junior drivers. It’s a great programme for young aspiring drivers and it’s a privilege to be a part of it.”
Jordan Love “It was great to race in 2017 as just the second ever Porsche Junior driver in GT3 Cup Challenge. I’m therefore extremely exciting to continue as part of the Junior Programme as it expands into the Carrera Cup championship in 2018.”
Adam Garwood “It’s an exciting time in my career, entering Carrera Cup as part of the 2018 Junior Programme. This provides genuine benefit to young drivers like myself in what is a fairly significant step into the Porsche championship. It’s going to be a great season and I’m proud to enter 2018 as one of the four Michelin Junior drivers.”
Cameron Hill “I’m really excited to be one of the four Michelin Juniors for the 2018 season. It’s an exciting step up to Carrera Cup this season and it’s an amazing opportunity that Michelin and Porsche has provided and I’m proud to represent both brands, along with all my supporters, into 2018. I hope to get some great value out of the programme in order to get some strong results this season and develop my career further into the future.”

T60 Ute drives LDV sales up 126 per cent in February
Higher sales and share for the market leader Chinese vehicle maker LDV has got 2018 off to a flying start with its Australian sales increasing by 126.5 per cent in February compared to the same month last year according to official VFACTS released today (5 March 2018). Although the increase is largely driven by newly launched LDV T60 Ute, the company’s vans are also performing strongly with the G10 one tonne van seeing its sales lift by 47 per cent in the first two months of 2018 and the large V80 van range lifting its sales by 36 per cent in January and February. The figures are completed by new LDV D90 which although in short supply is contributing as planned. Amongst car and light commercial brands, LDV is the fastest growing brand in Australia so far this year. “We know that by moving from the van sector, which is little more than two per cent of the market, into a sector that accounts for more than 25 per cent of the market would have a transformative effect
on our business,” says Dinesh Chinnappa, General Manager of LDV Australia. “But the speed at which the T60’s sales have taken off has genuinely surprised us. Added to that the interest around the launch of T60 has clearly raised the profile of our van range and their sales have benefited from the halo effect of the arrival of the LDV T60.” The profile of the LDV T60 in the Australian market place was lifted substantially when just days after its launch it became the first Chinese made ute to achieve the coveted ANCAP Five Star safety status. This was followed weeks later with the company backing ‘LDV Comanche’ in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, with the yacht carrying a five metre high picture of the LDV T60 on its sails as it went on to take Line Honours and set a new race record in the classic yacht race. This was then followed by a national TV campaign using an advertisement shot in Australia. “We started with the basics, a solid vehicle, well equipped and at a highly competitive price, but the ANCAP result not only showed we had a safe vehicle, but it also revealed the depth and quality of engineering and technology it contained,” explains Mr Chinnappa. “LDV Comanche provided an enormous lift in awareness. Every time it appeared on TV we saw a lift in our web site traffic as people searched the internet to find
out what an LDV was who made that ute on the yacht’s sails. That lift has held up weeks after the race.” The expansion of LDV sales in Australia has also been driven by a methodical growth in the number and distribution of its dealers across Australia. The initial dealer group was developed to support a brand selling only vans, which pointed towards a dealer group not only primarily metro-oriented but even within metro areas based where van owners lived and worked. In anticipation of the arrival of the T60 Ute and the D90 SUV, LDV has expanded its dealer group, both across the country into
rural areas and a more even and dense network across metropolitan areas. “The growth of our dealer group has been very much aligned to the arrival of the new models,” says Mr Chinnappa. “Our aim has been to ensure that dealers opened in the right place at the right time to ensure they were successful and profitable as close to their opening as possible. That is not to say we have finished hiring dealers. We will continue to expand the network in a careful and considered way that balances the need to provide our customers with appropriate levels of sales and aftersales support with the need to maintain and build the commercial viability of LDV dealers.”

When life throws you a curve, lean into it
Our roads are an untapped mecca for motorcycles Written by: Lance Skelton
For motorcycle touring enthusiasts, it doesn’t get much better than Tasmania in autumn. There’s still plenty of sunshine, the air is crisp and clean, and our quiet winding roads will take you through some of most spectacular and unspoilt scenery you’ll ever see. While local Tasmanian motorcyclist fraternity tend to take it for granted, the word has spread to all parts of the globe
that Tassie is an uncapped mecca for motorcycle enthusiasts. The road system in Tassie, and is continually being upgraded, serves up some of the finest motorcycle roads and corners that you could ever lean into. In the space of a day, you can be travelling through snow capped mountains, temperate rainforest, picturesque waterfalls, and spectacular pristine coastlines. In 2015, one of the largest international motorcycle magazines (MCN) rated Tasmania roads as the best in the world for motorcyclists. “Just imagine all your favourite roads stitched together, and laid out in one place, and that’s Tasmania”, said senior MCN road tester Mike Neeves. Neeves went on to describe Tasmania as an untapped biking Mecca. “You’d
never know these kinds of roads were here, the best roads in the world for mile after mile after mile”, he said. Every day, The Spirit of Tasmania ferries in dozens of excited and expectant motorcyclists to Devonport, many returning for a second or third time.
Take your time and soak up the experience Tassie is a relatively small island. The distance from north to south is 364 kilometres and from east to west it’s 306 kilometres, which means you can get around the entire island in six or seven days. But why not take your time, sample some of the local produce, and soak up the laid-back charm of Tassie. Above all, ride safely. Depending on your level of experience,
the time of year, and the number of days you have to ride, there’s some absolute cracking motorcycle rides in Tasmania. For more information visit the websitebestbikingroads.com

Smooth sailing on the water
Tasmanians love their boats Written by: Lance Skelton
Tasmania has a proud boating tradition that goes back to the days of the early explorers ‘Bass and Flinders’, who first circumnavigated the island in 1798 in a 25-tonne sloop called the ‘Norfolk’. In more recent times, there’s the annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race that attracts hard core ‘yachties’ from around the world for a 630-nautical mile sprint down the coast. Tassie also has some incredible freshwater lakes and rivers that are best explored by boat. Surprisingly, per head of population, Tasmania has more boats than any state or territory in Australia, averaging one boat for every 17 Tasmanians.
Autumn is a gorgeous time of the year to be out on the water, whether you’re fishing, sailing, water-skiing, kayaking or cruising in a motorboat. While the breeze is generally lighter, don’t be lulled into a false sense of security. The weather can still change at the drop of a hat, and you don’t want to be out on the water without the right safety equipment.
Lifejackets are a lifesaver All research points to the fact that by wearing a lifejacket, your chances of survival are far greater. That’s why lifejackets are not an option for certain types of vessels. They’re compulsory. This applies to any recreational motorboat or motor-propelled tender that is under six metres in length, when under power.

From beginner to pro, Tasmania suits all levels of 4 wheel driving
Family, 4WD and a sense of adventure
Huonville and New Norfolk.
Four-wheel driving can be a great way of getting the family outside, exploring new parts of Tasmania and learning new driving techniques but if you’ve never been before, it can be daunting to just jump in the car and get involved.
“Go with another car and take some recovery gear with you, like a winch or snatch, and make sure you have a place where you can put them on either car.” He said it was easy to find people to go with through a simple Facebook search for different groups doing something each weekend.
Written by: Molly Baxter
Four Wheel Drive Tasmania access and environment officer Jarrod Doyle said it didn’t have to be, with different tracks around the state catering to different levels and knowledge of the popular recreational hobby. He said there were plenty around Hobart, with the basic tracks being Pearl Rider Falls from Margate, which is a half day return trip with a waterfall at the end and Jeffreys Track which runs between
“They’re the two basic ones we usually tell people to check out with the family, but don’t go by yourself, even along the simple little ones, because there’s a decent walk if you get stuck somewhere,” Mr Doyle said.
“You also need a sense of adventure, but make sure you go slow, you’re more likely to break things if you speed through it.” he said. “Also let your tyres down if it’s a rocky track and take a camera.” Northern Explorers 4WD Group president Rodney Clark said there were
STRATEGIC MARKETING AUDIO VISUAL DESIGN DIGITAL TASMANIAN CATALOGUES
plenty of options for different levels of experience in the north of the state and most clubs were open to people with no knowledge at all. He said using a 4WD gets you to places people normally couldn’t reach in a car and most 4WD trips included camping in the bush with fishing, bushwalking and other outdoor activities. It’s something the whole family can be involved in – including your furry, four legged friends if you research where you’re going. “All you need is a driver’s licence, and of course a 4WD and some camping gear,” he said. “We run a trip every month and we basically teach you how to handle it in a stock standard 4WD. Rock up to our club and away we go. We have a club newsletter which outlines what you’ll need for the trip and how hard it’ll be.” He said his favourite 4WD track in the
north was St Albans Bay which included beach and sand dune driving. The 22km track also has a number of unserviced campsites while also offering bird watching and surf fishing. “The track is reasonably easy - we’ll drive along the beach and into the sand dunes and it suits all sorts of experience levels. It’s one of the favoured ones.” If you don’t have a 4WD, never fear – there’s plenty of options out there for different price brackets including the Suzuki Jimmy for $22,990 to the Range Rover Sport for $150,000. “4WDs are all very capable with what they can do but we’ve seen that dual cab utes are very popular for a car that can do everything,” Mr Doyle said. For more information about different tracks around the state, head to the Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania website under the recreation tab or the 4WD Tasmania website to see individual clubs.
