Tassie’s reputation for classic mountain bike adventures shifts up a gear

opportunities, and you could pick up real estate for about the price of a packet of chips. But in the space of a few short years, that’s all changed.

Written by: Lance Skelton

In 2015, stages one and two were successfully launched, comprising nearly 40 kilometres of track through some of the most challenging and scenic tracks

It’s not only hard-core four-wheel-drive enthusiasts who love to get down and dirty in Tasmania. You’ll also find a growing number of adventurers who chase the adrenaline rush that comes with technically challenging mountainbike riding through some spectacular forests and streams. Once again, Tassie is blessed with more than its fair share of classic trails that are drawing more and more visitors to the island. Two places in particular, Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trails, and Maydena Bike Park Trails, are going gang-busters.

Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trails A few years ago, Derby was a struggling little riverside town near Launceston with a declining population of around 200 residents. There were few job

After winning a $3 million joint funding initiative, Dorset Council, with the help of Federal Government funding, undertook the largest single mountain bike project in Australia. It has become a mountain biker’s paradise, and attracts over 30,000 visitors a year.

on the face of the planet. Another 40 kilometres were added in 2016. What started as a $3 million calculated risk now generates around $30 million annually for the town, and has well and truly put Derby on the world stage for mountain bike riders, and adventure seeking travellers.

What makes Blue Derby so special? Blue Derby boasts 24 different tracks which vary in difficulty, length and scenery. They have names like ‘Atlas’, ‘Black Dragon’, ‘Big Chook’, ‘Howler’,

‘Flickity Sticks’, ‘Devilwolf’, ‘DamBusters’ and ‘Detonate’. The trails have been built by ‘World Trail’, a Queensland absed organisation who have established a reputation around the world for jawdropping mountain-bike trails. The company has gone to great lengths during the planning and construction phases to maintain the natural beauty of the area, and to showcase it within a network of trails that take riders through a myriad of microclimates. Some trails are as short as 300-metres, they’ll take around two minutes to complete, and they’re a hoot. Then there are trails that can take around 90 minutes to complete, and are technically challenging. Of course, if you’re not an experienced mountain-biker and you prefer to peddle rather than shred, there

are still plenty of easy trails to enjoy. All the trails are clearly marked in terms of difficulty and duration, and there is something for everyone. For more details visit ridebluederby.com

Maydena bike park trails Equally popular with mountain bikers is Maydena Bike Park Trails in the beautiful Derwent Valley, which features 30-plus ‘gravity trails’ and a further 65 kilometres under development. All gravity trails, which are essentially fast winding downhill runs starting at a summit, capitalise on the parks unique rainforest environment and massive 820m vertical elevation, offering trails of all types, for all abilities. Most of the trails require a shuttle service to the summit, which is just as well as it’s a long, long way to the top.

3

Of course, there’s more to Maydena than just tearing down the mountainside on a tricked up mountain-bike (not that there’s anything wrong with that if this happens to be your schtick). Part of the business model for Maydena includes organised sightseeing tours that take you through all sorts of spectacular wilderness country, which can look even more stunning with snow-capped mountains as a backdrop. Maydena also has the highest altitude restaurant in Tasmania at 1100 metres above sea level, and features 360-degree views across the Styx Valley, Mt Field and beyond.

Maydena Gravity Festival, April 26th – 29th, 2018 This month, Maydena will play host to one of the biggest mountain bike events

on the Australian mountain bike calendar! Starting April 26th, Maydena Gravity Fest is a 4 day festival that includes some of the finest riding you will ever have the thrill of witnessing, which takes in stunning Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness. Three separate marquee gravity events combine with three social events to create a packed three days of riding, and socialising. According to information on their website, all race events are suitable for both enduro/trail and downhill bikes, and there are a number of different events. These include the Ultimate Flow Challenge, Air DH, Tech Assault, Pump Track Challenge, Dual Slalom and more. For details visit maydenabikepark.com

Intentions for new car buyers

Written by: Lance Skelton

2.26 million Australians will buy a new car in the next four years

Australians like buying new cars. According to a recent Roy Morgan Survey, some 2.26 million Australians intend to purchase a new vehicle in the next four years. This is just below the same period last year (2.29 million) which lead up to the record sales in 2017. In addition to strong four-year levels of vehicle buying intentions, one-

Interestingly, diesel engines now make up a third of the new cars sold in Australia each year, and their numbers have more then doubled in the past decade. Australians continue to buy practical SUVs, efficient small cars and load-hauling utes in incredible volumes. Part of the appeal is that they’re safe, practical and largely preserve their resale values.

Record addicts and driving champions

The Australian Grand Prix on 25 March 2018 kicked off MercedesBenz’s year of “record addicts and driving champions” Every win by a Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport racing car is also a brilliant reminder of the Stuttgart brand’s unique motorsport history. 2018 sees MercedesBenz celebrating a whole series of such outstanding events under the banner “Record addicts and driving champions” at various venues, including the Techno Classica show in Essen (21 to 25 March 2018). The anniversaries range from the one-two-three win in the 1908 French Grand Prix to Lewis Hamilton’s first world championship for Vodafone McLarenMercedes in 2008. Following four double championship wins in a row for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, in 2018 Hamilton and his teammate Valtteri Bottas have the chance to claim the fifth Formula 1 drivers’ and constructors’ title since 2014. The history of motorsport victories by Mercedes-Benz and its predecessor

brands is almost as long as that of the automobile itself. Vehicles with Daimler engines dominated many early automobile races in France, for example, the Marseilles–Nice race over 226 kilometres on 6 March 1898 (one-two-three win) and the Paris–Bordeaux race covering 573 kilometres on 11 and 12 May 1898 (victory by René de Knyff). Daimler also notched up wins in 1898 in the Berlin– Leipzig–Berlin long-distance tour and the first Dolomites tour. Further milestones in motorsport history were achieved 110 years ago – with Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) and Benz & Cie still competing as rivals: DMG won the year’s most important race, the French Grand Prix. Benz & Cie. was victorious in the no less prestigious first Prince Heinrich Tour. And Victor Hémery won the Saint Petersburg to Moscow race over 686 kilometres in a Benz 120 hp on 1 June 1908, setting a new record for the course in the process. The Prince Heinrich Tour caused a particular sensation in Germany. This competition, which took place from 1908 to 1910, was launched by Prince Heinrich of Prussia, brother of the German emperor and an automobile enthusiast. The premiere of the international tour from 9 to 11 June 1908 covered a distance of 2201 kilometres. With a total of 129 vehicles competing, the tour was won by Fritz Erle in a Benz 7.5-litre special touring car rated at 37 kW (50 hp).

Just a few weeks later, DMG and Benz & Cie. dominated the French Grand Prix. This “Grand Prix de l’Automobile-Club de France” succeeded the international Gordon Bennett race as the leading international motorsport event in 1906. On 7 July 1908 Christian Lautenschlager was first across the finishing line in the 140 hp Mercedes Grand Prix racing car, ahead of Victor Hémery and René Hanriot in their Benz 120 hp racing cars. The two German companies, which were to merge to form Daimler-Benz AG with the Mercedes-Benz brand in 1926, thus took first, second and third places.

Supercharged sports cars and Silver Arrows 90 years ago, Mercedes-Benz scored a stunning one-two-three victory with the new SS supercharged sports car (W 06) in the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring on 15 July 1928. Rudolf Caracciola and Christian Werner won the event, ahead of Otto Merz and the Christian Werner / Willy Walb team. As the drivers took turns behind the wheel in the prevailing hot weather, Werner’s name appears twice. In the racing version, the vehicle with a 7.1-litre six-cylinder in-line engine delivered an output of up to 184 kW (250 hp) when the supercharger was active. The SS had previously chalked up its first victory at the Baden-Baden automobile tournament at Bühler Höhe on 29 June 1928. At the wheel: Rudolf Caracciola.

On 29 July 1928 Mercedes-Benz fielded the legendary SSK for the first time in the Gabelbach race, and it was once again Rudolf Caracciola who wasted no time in setting a new course record in this premiere. It was behind the wheel of this racing sports car developed from the SS model and featuring a shorter wheelbase that he also clocked up a new record to win the racing car class in the International ADAC Schauinsland Hill Climb Race. 80 years ago Rudolf Caracciola won the 1938 Grand Prix season, becoming European champion in Mercedes-Benz’s Silver Arrows for the third time after 1935 and 1937. The Stuttgart-based brand developed a new racing car for this season on the basis of the new rules introduced by the Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus (AIACR). The W 154 was powered by a V12 engine with a displacement of 2962 cc and supercharging which delivered up to 333 kW (453 hp) in its first season. In 1938 Caracciola won the Coppa Acerbo at Pescara and the Swiss Grand Prix at the Bremgarten circuit, also coming in second three times (twice together with Hermann Lang) and taking two 3rd places (once together with Manfred von Brauchitsch). 40 years ago Mercedes-Benz dominated the long-distance rally “Vuelta a la América del Sud”, which was staged from 17 to 24 September 1978, with a stunning performance that saw it take the first five places. Andrew Cowan and Colin Malkin

crossed the finishing line first, ahead of Sobieslaw Zasada and Andrzej Zembruski (both teams competing in the MercedesBenz 450 SLC rally vehicle) and Tony Fowkes and Klaus Kaiser in a MercedesBenz 280 E (W 123). In the following years, the near-series V8 Coupés of the C 107 model series also made the running in the African Bandama rally.

Return to the circuit 30 years ago, Mercedes-Benz officially entered the sports car world championship in 1988. The involvement in sports car prototypes Group C marked the Stuttgart brand’s return to the race circuit. Five years earlier, in 1984, the company had signed a partnership agreement with Peter Sauber’s Swiss racing team, under which Mercedes-Benz was to deliver the engines for the Sauber team’s racing cars. In 1985 Sauber presented the C 8, which was powered by the Mercedes-Benz M 117 V8 engine. The C 9 was introduced in 1987 and officially included the name “Mercedes” in its model designation (initially Kouros-Mercedes C 9, as of 1988 Sauber-Mercedes C 9). With more than 515 kW (700 hp) of engine power, the Sauber-Mercedes C 9 won the German Super Cup racing series in the 1988 season, clocking up its first win on 29 May 1988 at the Hockenheimring. Sauber-Mercedes was also victorious in five world championship meetings: the 800-kilometre race around Jerez (Spain), the Czechoslovakian Grand Prix in Brno, the ADAC 1000-kilometre race at the Nürburgring, the 1000-kilometre Spa-Francorchamps race and the Lucas Supersprint at Sandown Park (Australia), where Jean-Louis Schlesser and Jochen Mass crossed the finishing line ahead of their teammates Mauro Baldi and Stefan Johansson. In the following year, Sauber-Mercedes finally won the world championship with the C 9. The year 1988 also saw Mercedes-Benz officially take part in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) for the first time.

Five teams competed in the MercedesBenz 190 E 2.3-16 Group A, backed up by factory support from the Stuttgart brand. Roland Asch was runner-up in the DTM Championship at the first attempt in 1988. 20 years ago, in 1998, Mercedes-Benz took the FIA GT title for the second time. The duo Klaus Ludwig and Ricardo Zonta were crowned champions after notching up 5 wins and 4 second places in the AMG Mercedes CLK-GTR and CLK-LM racing touring cars. Together with the other driver teams, AMG Mercedes actually won all ten races of the 1998 season and clearly dominated the brand rankings. Its track record in this season included a one-two-three win in Oschersleben on 12 April 1998 and six one-two finishes. The CLK-GTR powered by a V12 engine was

the winning vehicle in 1997. From the third race of the 1998 season it was replaced by the CLK-LM with a V8 engine which was originally developed for the 24-hour race in Le Mans.

The new Silver Arrows in the premier racing series 25 years ago Daimler-Benz AG, as it was then known, decided to acquire an interest in British racing engine manufacturer Ilmor Engineering. This was an important move with regard to its return to Formula 1, the premier racing series. By 1994, Mercedes-Benz’s involvement had been stepped up to cover Formula 1 and the 500-mile race in Indianapolis (USA). In 1995 Mercedes-Benz became the engine partner of the long-established McLaren racing team.

20 years ago, in 1998, this partnership spawned its first major success: Mika Häkkinen became Formula 1 world champion in the McLaren-Mercedes MP4/13 Formula 1 racing car, and the West McLaren-Mercedes team won the constructors’ world championship. Ten years later, in 2008, Lewis Hamilton won his first Formula 1 world championship, racing for the Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes team in the MP 4-23. Following Mercedes-Benz’s return to Formula 1 with its own works team, Hamilton won the drivers’ world championships for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport in 2014, 2015 and 2017. In 2016 Nico Rosberg became the first German driver to win the Formula 1 world championship at the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow.

Volvo XC60 wins World Car of the Year 2018 in New York

Volvo wins once more in 2018 and it is only April

The new Volvo XC60 midsize SUV has been named World Car of the Year 2018 at the New York Auto Show, adding another accolade to Volvo’s growing list. The XC60 also scooped the prestigious North American Utility of the Year Award earlier this year, while the XC40 small SUV was named European Car of the Year at the Geneva Motor Show earlier

this month. The World Car of the Year win is the first in this competition for Volvo Cars, the premium car maker. “I am pleased to see our company’s product investments paying off,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “We are up against some tough competition, but this award for the XC60 show that Volvo has the right combination of design, connectivity and safety that appeals to customers across the world.” In the new XC60, Euro NCAP’s best overall performer in 2017, Volvo’s City Safety Autonomous Emergency Braking system has been enhanced with steering support for when automatic braking alone may not help avoid a potential collision. In addition Oncoming Lane Mitigation with Steer Assist which helps mitigate head-on collisions and

Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Steer Assist functionality has been added to reduce the risk of lanechanging collisions. XC60 is available with a range of diesel and petrol engines as well as Volvo Cars’ award-winning T8 Twin Engine petrol plug-in hybrid at the top of the powertrain range, delivering 407hp and acceleration from 0-100km in just 5.3 seconds. These two accolades come hot on the heels of Mr Samuelsson’s World Car Person of the Year recognition, awarded by the same panel of international media in Geneva earlier this month. Mr Samuelsson was given this inaugural award in recognition of his work in driving the success of Volvo Cars in recent years.

LDV D90, the five star SUV

D90 SUV joins the LDV T60 Ute with a five star Ancap safety rating Just weeks after the LDV T60 Ute achieved the coveted five-star ANCAP Safety Rating, LDV’s first foray into the booming SUV sector, the D90, has also joined the ranks of five-star ANCAP safety rated cars. “The LDV T60 set our safety benchmark with its five-star ANCAP safety rating and, with the D90, LDV has proven that the highest safety rating is now LDV’s minimum standard for new vehicles launched in Australia,” says Dinesh Chinnappa, General Manager of LDV Automotive Australia. “The D90 not only meets the stringent criteria set by ANCAP for the 5 star rating, with technology such as road sign recognition, it reveals the next generation of road safety features.” “Drawing on the resources of one of the world’s largest car makers, LDV’s parent SAIC, as well as its own design and engineering prowess, LDV is producing a new generation of vehicles, heralded by the T60 and confirmed by the D90, that offer 5 star safety with value, technology, advanced connectivity, impressive features and comfort,” says Mr. Chinnappa. The D90 marks LDV’s first foray into the SUV market, first seen in Australia

back in March while undergoing clandestine testing and local calibration for its advanced automatic road sign recognition system prior to its world debut at the 2017 Shanghai International Motor Show.

best plan of attack for difficult conditions or, by selecting from the centre console mounted control, tell the LDV D90 which conditions to optimise its settings. The terrain selection includes rock, mud, sand and snow.

At just over five metres long and nearly two metres wide, the LDV D90 is generously proportioned, which translates into a spacious interior for seven seats, or, with the two rear rows of seats folded, a load swallowing 2.3 cubic metres of space, meeting the expectations of a full-size SUV.

The LDV D90 has a host of features to alert the driver to danger, such as blind spot warning, lane wander alert and traffic sign alerts, which automatically spots road signs such as speed limits and stop signs and brings them up in the instrument display. The D90 has the latest technology to assist the driver in an emergency, such as autonomous braking, front collision warning and the latest range of technology that combine under electronic stability control that works not just to stop the driver losing control of the D90 but also steps in to stop the vehicle rolling. The third tier of safety equipment, that are designed to protect the occupants in the event of an accident, is headlined by six airbags and supported by advanced energy absorbing technology around the rigid passenger safety cell.

Power comes from a light and efficient turbocharged petrol engine that produces 165 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque from a commendably low 2500 rpm with a flat curve that means peak torque runs to 3500 rpm, ideal for an SUV. Gearboxes are all six speed electronically controlled automatics. The drivetrains are a choice of two-wheel drive or a fourwheel drive system that not only has the essentials of high and low range, but also has terrain selection and an electronic rear differential lock. Despite the size and ability of the D90, it still manages to offer a combined fuel consumption figure of 10.2 l/100 km for the 2WD variant and 10.9 l/100 km for the 4WD. To further reduce fuel consumption in urban driving the LDV D90 has automatic engine stop/ start, which means the engine is only running when it is required, thus cutting fuel consumption. With the four-wheel drive system on specific LDV D90 models, the driver may either allow the capable four-wheel drive system, which includes an electronic differential lock, work out for itself the

The LDV D90 launches in four versions. The D90 Mode is two-wheel drive with a six-speed automatic gearbox; the LDV D90 Deluxe is available with a choice of the two-wheel drive/automatic gearbox combination or the four-wheel drive with terrain selection matched to the six-speed automatic gearbox. Topping the range is the fittingly named LDV D90 Luxe, which is equipped as standard with four-wheel drive with terrain selection matched to the sixspeed automatic gearbox. The four-wheel drive versions all have an electronically locking differential and keyless entry and exit with smart keys.

The list of luxury, comfort and convenience features in the LDV D90 is as long as it is comprehensive, whether it is the driver’s seat in the top variant that is heated, cooled and massages the driver, the cruise control across the range that is adaptive, not one but two display screens, a massive 12-inch touch screen for entertainment and communications in the centre of the dashboard, and a multifunction eight inch one for the instrument display ahead of the driver. In addition to the formidable range of elite standard equipment in the range-opening D90 Mode, the D90 Deluxe gains luxury items such as a sunroof; dual zone climate control air conditioning; ambient lighting; luggage rack; leather steering wheel; hands free opening tailgate; a driver’s seat that is eight-way adjustable, four-way lumbar support; leather upholstery for the first and second rows of seats, eight speaker audio system. The LDV D90 Luxe lives to its role as the flagship of the range with equipment above the Deluxe that includes a 360-degree exterior camera; a panoramic sunroof; auto dimming mirror; Driver’s seat, eight-way adjustment, fourway lumbar support adjustment with heating, ventilation, massage and two memory settings; front passenger seat, four-way electronic adjustment, four-way lumbar support, heated; second row seats – electronic adjustment, heating; 12 speaker power audio system. D90 Luxe owners are greeted by puddle lights under each door, ambient lighting inside, a rear tailgate that opens itself at the wave of a foot under the bumper and may even plug in mains powered equipment with the 220 volt/150 W power socket.

New Corolla reveals fun-to-drive identity

An all-new petrol engine, updated Toyota hybrid system and a highly rigid platform are at the heart of the next-generation Corolla hatch’s fun-to-drive identity. Due to go on sale locally in August, more details about the new Corolla hatch have been released ahead of next week’s New York motor show. The new Corolla features a 2.0-litre Dynamic Force direct-injection in-line fourcylinder engine as well as new manual and CVT automatic transmissions. Dynamic improvements include a new Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform that improves torsional rigidity by 60 per cent, along with a new multilink rear suspension and upgraded front suspension. On-road feel and fuel efficiency is further refined through a low centre of gravity and the extensive use of aluminium and high-strength steels in the lighter-weight chassis and body. Standard advanced safety technologies include a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, active cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beam, seven airbags and a reversing camera. A dynamic and sophisticated exterior design is 25mm lower, 30mm wider and 40mm longer than its predecessor with wider tracks and a 40mm longer wheelbase. The bonnet sits 47mm lower, affording passengers excellent forward visibility. Complementing the fresh exterior styling is an upscale interior with supportive new sport seats, a longer and wider centre console and quality touches including smaller gaps between buttons and switches. Front-passengers hip points are lower to provide a more natural body posture and positioning for ideal access to the multifunction steering wheel, pedals, and gearshift. Corolla hatch’s new petrol engine adopts the latest in Toyota technology for

substantially increased power and fuel efficiency along with cleaner emissions.

from automatic transmission technology.

Smaller and lighter than the current 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine, the new engine helps lower the centre of gravity and benefits the car’s overall balance.

Corolla hatch buyers will also be able to choose the latest version of Toyota’s 1.8-litre hybrid powertrain with improved low-range torque and fuel efficiency to rival Prius.

It incorporates Toyota’s latest D-4S fuelinjection that uses high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection. The set-up adapts its injection method based on driving conditions so that ideal combustion is achieved.

On all models, high-quality steering feel, ride comfort, and handling stability is aided by revised MacPherson strut geometry at the front, including new coilspring rates and damping forces, plus reduced friction in sliding parts.

The engine is equipped with VVT-iE (variable valve timing-intelligence by electric motor) on the intake side and VVT-i on the exhaust. VVT-iE uses an electric motor instead of oil pressure to control the variable valve timing.

At the rear, a new multi-link suspension with stabiliser bar sharpens responsiveness. Lower arm locations have moved (for improved toe-in angle during higher-speed manoeuvring), as has shock absorber placement (moved forward for better cargo capacity and reduced longitudinal low frequency input). Overall, front and rear suspension friction has been reduced by 40 per cent, and its centre of gravity is cut by a substantial 20mm.

It features a longer stroke, higher compression ratio, more efficient and complete combustion, reduced friction and lighter timing chain. It is also quieter with improvements such as a more rigid crank case with integrated stiffener, a lighter resin cylinder head and a ribbed oil pan. A new six-speed intelligent manual gearbox will appeal to keen drivers with its downshift rev-matching control. It is one of the world’s most efficient and smallest transmissions - 6.8kg lighter and 24mm shorter than the current car’s manual gearbox. The 2.0-litre engine is also available with an all-new Dynamic-Shift CVT that has simulated 10-speed sequential shift steps, sport mode and paddle shifters. It features several innovative elements, including the world’s first launch gear in a passenger vehicle CVT for improved efficiency in lower gear ratios. The system uses a gear drive off the line, resulting in powerful yet smooth acceleration. When switching from gear drive to belt drive, the transmission system uses highly responsive gear change control technologies cultivated

The new frontal styling with a rounded nose and trapezoidal-shaped under grille is flanked by slim bi-LED headlamps that wrap deep into the front fenders. Front overhang has been reduced by 20mm; at the rear, it’s 20mm longer. Chiselled character lines result in an active, well-planted expression. Wheel sizes range from 16-inches to 18-inches in diameter. The hatch tailgate is now made from Toyota Super Olefin Polymer and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene for light weight that aids fuel efficiency. It is set at a more acute angle (moved 14 degrees forward) for a sportier look. Tail-lamps are LED and the rear bumper echoes the front design with its thin lower lip and chrome diffuser. All models feature an electronic parking brake and two front USB outlets while sound systems include an available JBL premium audio with Clari-Fi technology

that analyses, rebuilds and restores audio signals that were lost in the digital compression process. Grade-dependent features include single-zone manual air-conditioning or dual-zone automatic climate control, paddle shifters and 4.2-inch or 7-inch thin-film transistor multi-information displays.

What you need to know before buying your first motorbike Written by: Lance Skelton

The wind in your hair, the wide open road, the roar of the engine under your seat, and all that freedom! There’s so much to like about the idea of riding a motorbike, which is why there’s so many on our roads. Riding a motorcycle is a beautiful thing. But before you become too carried away with the thrill and romance of it all, there’s a few things you’ll need to be aware of, especially if you’ve never owned or ridden a motorcycle before. To help you navigate through some of the most important decisions, we’ve compiled a five point checklist.

1. Preparing for your first ride At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, motorcycles are a very different beast to driving a motor car. So first up, is recommended completing a supervised training course to get a motorcycle licence. Once that’s complete, practise riding the bike on quiet roads to build up your confidence, and then slowly move on to busier roads and freeways. (By the way, the minimum age to obtain a motorcycle provisional licence in Tasmania is 17 years of age, and you must have held a motorcycle learner’s licence for a minimum of 6 months).

what you want to crash in, not what you want to be seen in”. Helmets, gloves, jackets, pants, and boots are all essential items, and you’ll need to do your homework. So start by talking with the sales guys and gals at your local motorcycle dealership. They’ll give you an idea of what’s on the market, and what you’ll need to pay to get something that offers a reasonable level of protection in the event of an accident.

2. Buying the right protective gear

3. Buying your first motor bike

While there’s something very cool about the leather-jacket and sunglasses look that has been made famous in movies like Easy Rider and Rumblefish, you’re very exposed when you’re riding a motorbike, and skin hitting bitumen at 80-plus kilometres an hour does not look very cool at all.

In reality, you will make some basic errors with your first motorbike. So if it’s going to be scratched and damaged (and it surely will) then it’s better to damage a cheaper motorcycle than an expensive one. That said, you’ll still want something that’s reliable. If you’re a complete ‘newbie’ then it’s a great idea to talk with a mate who has some knowledge of what to look out for, and what to stay

To use an old biker’s expression, “Wear

clear of. You’ll find plenty of used bikes for sale by trawling the popular websites like bikesales.com.au and Gumtree. The other option is to buy something new from a dealership. While it might cost a few thousand dollars more but you’ll have the peace of mind that comes with a warranty.

4. Choosing the right bike Always keep in mind the sort of riding you’re wanting to do. Is it country cruising or city commuting? Also, try not to get caught up in the look of the machine. Do you really need a lime green version that you can’t find anywhere in Tasmania? Instead, go for functionality. Look for something that’s easy to ride. Of course, you will only know that by taking it for a ride, by feeling how much it weighs, and how much power you’ve got to play with. If it’s your first bike, then don’t take on something too big and powerful for your

level of experience. (You’re just asking for trouble). Generally speaking, the more ‘CCs’, the bigger the engine, and the more difficult it is to control.

5. The cost of buying your first motorbike How long is a piece of string? By getting a good friend involved in the process, and by doing your homework, you should be able to find a mechanically sound, second-hand motorbike by a well-known brand for around two to three thousand dollars. (Of course, like anything that’s second-hand, they do come with more risk). You should also allow another $800 to $1000 to purchase the right protective gear, plus another $500 to $1000 for registration and insurance. The good news is the cost of running a motorbike and filling up with petrol is substantially less than running a motor vehicle, which is another big attraction for buying a motorbike in the first place.

Urban myth settled: happy campers really are happier The phrase “happy campers” is used in everyday conversations, everywhere. But are campers really that happy? Well, the stats are in and it looks like the saying “happy campers” is founded in fact. Campers are happy! Or at least, happier than those who don’t go camping. Caravan Industry Association of Australia conducted a “Real Richness” study to better understand the emotional and social benefits of camping and the value it provides for current and future generations of travellers. In this study, “camping” included everything from trips in swags, tents, tent trailers, camper trailers, caravans, campervans, motorhomes to cabin accommodation. The study showed that Australians who go camping are more satisfied, happy, optimistic and energised than those who do not go camping. Campers say that camping makes them more productive, more grounded, more in touch with nature, healthier and gives them the time they need to gather their thoughts. What’s more, they are also less stressed, frustrated, bored and lonely. When the study’s respondents talked about camping, the most common words they used were love, time and

family. This is testament to the value of a camping trip given these days everyone seems to need a good digital detox so they can reconnect to the real world – whether that means reconnecting to yourself, your loved ones or nature! And it doesn’t stop there. The benefits to children are powerful, with study respondents adding that it teaches kids many important life skills and allows them to build strong relationships with their family.

So, it’s true! “Happy campers” really are happier than non-campers. Australian campers are happier and closer to their loved ones than those who do not camp. The value of camping and a good adventure in the great outdoors can’t

be underestimated. And lucky for us, Australia has some of the most diverse, unique and picturesque places in the world. Source, Caravan Industry Association of Australia

In just the last two years, 7.1million Australians, in groups of all shapes and sizes, have gone on a caravanning or camping holiday. And 79% of all Australians have a positive purchase intention towards this kind of trip in the next two years. It seems camping adds great richness to our lives, allowing us to reconnect with loved ones in a relaxed environment, free from modern distractions. The study showed that camping gives people the opportunity to spend quality time with the people who are most important to them. The responses revealed that campers feel closer to their partners, children, friends, grandchildren, parents and even their community when compared to non-campers.

Webster’s Trucks delivers great customer experience to the Tassie transport industry

Webster Trucks is a division of Motors Tas Pty Ltd (Motors) with extensive interests in the heavy and light automotive industry. Motors employs approximately 420+ employees in Tasmania with 120 staff being directly employed in the Webster Trucks division. Webster Trucks was formed in October 2007 when Motors acquired the heavy truck business from Webster Limited. The amalgamation resulted in a consolidation of franchises with Isuzu, Mack, UD and Volvo Trucks now being represented.

More recently Motors was acquired by ASX listed company A P Eagers Ltd in April 2016. Eagers is one of the largest automotive groups in Australia with over 4,300 employees and 140 dealerships. Although the amalgamated business of Motors and Webster Trucks is relatively new, Webster Trucks heritage dates back to the early 1900s when it imported heavy machinery (including ‘Lorries’ and agricultural equipment) in crates ready for assembly. The business continued to serve the heavy transport industry and commenced selling and servicing Mack

trucks in 1958, this makes Webster Trucks the oldest continuous Mack dealer in Australia. The integration of Motors and Webster Trucks has seen this long heritage continue as Motors sold and serviced Dodge Trucks in the early 1900s, becoming the Bedford dealer in the 1950s that then evolved into Isuzu trucks – a franchise we continue to support. Webster Trucks has been the dealer for UD Trucks since 2001 and was appointed the Volvo Trucks dealer in 2008. Webster Trucks is proud to be the sole authorised Tasmanian dealer for Isuzu, Mack, UD and Volvo Trucks.

Webster Trucks has the most extensive retail network of service/parts outlets in Tasmania with facilities located in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie. The Hobart and Launceston facilities are parts, service and sales outlets for all four brands with Devonport and Burnie are aftersales support only. Bruce Davey, the Dealer Principal says “our emphasis is going the extra mile, all to deliver the best possible customer experience for the Tasmanian Transport Industry”. Advertorial

It’s just like riding a bike. In fact, it’s much easier Australia specialising in E-bikes, and you can pay anything from around $1000 for a base model right up to around $10,000 with all the bells and whistles. Most come with a two-year warranty, and if you’re buying from Tasmania, and it’s coming from the mainland, they’ll often throw in free shipping costs.

E-bikes are gaining speed in Australia Written by: Lance Skelton

You may have noticed people riding strange bikes that seem to be travelling particularly fast without much peddling at all. You’ll often see these riders zipping in and out of traffic, and they seem to be hardly puffing at all. Well, chances are they’re riding an ‘E-Bike’. The ‘E’ stands for electric, and in terms of popularity, it seems the world can’t get enough of them. In 2016, there’s an estimated 200 million E-bikes being ridden around the world, with the majority being purchased in China. Some experts are predicting this figure will grow to around two billion worldwide by the year 2050.

Why E-bikes are so popular? To begin with, E-bikes allow people of all ages and fitness levels to get out and be active without causing strain or injury, and allows people to gradually enhance their fitness. For instance, on an E-bike, when you come to hill, or start to encounter a challenging head wind, just switch on the electric motor for some added ‘ooomph’. (no problem at all!) The beauty of this type of bicycle is

the manufacturer, these little bikes will give you a maximum speed of around 25 kilometres an hour, and a range of up to 50 kilometres with pedal-assist mode using a 36 volt, 250 watt lithium battery. When you’re finished riding, they can be folded up and fit into most car boots when they’re not in use.

But there’s also another, more practical reason for the surge in popularity; an E-bike is actually much cheaper than a car, or even catching public transport if you were to average it all out over a few years.

Along with being environmentally friendly, a lithium battery for an electric bike costs only 10-15 cents on average to fully recharge. This means you can potentially save thousands of dollars a year compared with driving a car or using public transport. There are now several companies in

Taking the road less travelled in Tasmania

25 roads, tracks and beaches to explore by 4WD in Tassie Written by: Lance Skelton

For serious four-wheel drive enthusiasts, there’s nothing better than getting off the bitumen, and onto some dirt, mud or sand. While the recently re-elected State Government has pledged around $72 million to improve Tasmania’s road network, you’ll still find plenty of roads that wind their way through all sorts of spectacular country that are virtually impossible to traverse by any other means than a reliable four-wheel-drive. Having said that, if you’re still relatively new to four-wheel-driving, then you may want to explore some easier trails to begin with, and slowly build up your confidence. (we’ve all heard stories of accidents by inexperienced drivers of four-wheel-drives who go too hard too early).

Easy, medium or hard? The Department of Parks and Wildlife has put together a terrific guide to four-wheel drive tracks in Tasmania that’s available on their website. The guide includes a list of 25 roads, tracks and beaches that has been compiled to assist four-wheel-drive enthusiasts. Importantly, the tracks are rated according to the following system;

Easy - Most are unsealed roads able to be traversed by a two-wheel drive vehicle if enough care is taken. However, if going in a two-wheel drive, it is recommended that you contact the land management agency to check road conditions before you start. Medium - These tracks are suitable

for four wheel drive vehicles / trail bikes only, with some areas of boggy soil, rocks or sand to be traversed. Some off-road driving experience is recommended.

Hard - These tracks are for experienced four-wheel drive or trail bike users only. Deep bogs, steep slopes, and soft sand will test your driving skills. Travelling in company is the only way to traverse these tracks safely. Cruisin’ without bruisin Another fabulous resource for people who love four-wheel driving is a downloadable brochure called ‘Crusin Without Bruisin’ that’s available on the Department of Parks and Wildlife website. Along with setting out a code of practice for the use of recreational vehicles on State-Owned Lands in Tasmania, there’s detail on track standards, the relevant map, grid references, plus a local contact number for further information. Guidelines are included on how recreational vehicle users can minimise their impact on the environment. In fact, it’s such a handy resource that it would be a clever idea to print off a copy and keep it in your glove box.
