Technological thirst for driverless cars ultimately results in safer roads today Written by: Ford Renner & Tess Mann

The future as imagined in ‘Back to the Future’ is not here yet, but we are certainly driving towards it. From eco-friendly fuel alternatives to self-driving cars, the sky is literally the limit. Well on the way to autonomous driving, car manufacturers are developing and incorporating safety features with their eyes directed at a driverless future. The bright minds behind car safety are still dreaming of the day that drivers can make phone calls or even watch a movie instead of placing their full attention to the traffic and their surroundings. However, at this point in time no safety feature or automatic driving assistant can substitute a driver’s ability to conduct a vehicle in a safe manner.

Casualties

What started with a simple distance detector at the rear bumper, escalated to multi-cameras, self-parking and active cruise control. The safety technologies built into cars available today already look like they’ve come from a sci-fi movie. The safety of drivers and passengers is a high priority, as it should be. The average annual number of serious injuries on Tasmanian roads is 276.9 and the average number of fatalities about 37 people per year, according to the Department of State Growth. In 2016, South Australia registered

6,565 casualties in total - including non-serious injuries, serious injuries and fatalities - based on the South Australian Government Data Directory. If we compare the data between both states, Tasmania has 0.1 per cent more serious injuries and deaths per capita. While this doesn’t look like a large number in a percentage, if Tasmania were to have the same population as SA, this would be huge – an additional 2,000 people seriously injured or killed in car accidents.

Prevention

New safety features are not only keeping people inside a vehicle safe, but also

other drivers, pedestrians and wildlife. The goal is to make driving safe before, during and after your drive. The best way to start talking about safety is with prevention and to prevent accidents drivers must pay full attention to the road, adapt to traffic and weather conditions, look out for pedestrians and ultimately predict the unpredictable. However, with the excessive amount of information to be processed, along with the many distractions of daily life, any help that we can get from our fourwheeled friend is more than welcome. How do we prevent the unpredictable if we are not clairvoyants? Imagine that the car in front of you suddenly brakes, or that a child or animal jumps in front of your car, leaving you no time to stop? To prevent a potential tragedy, car manufacturers are beginning to include sensors that can “sense” when the vehicle in front of you brakes, or if you are heading towards any sort of collision. If you can’t react fast enough, your car will do it for you. Another major cause of traffic accidents is the dreaded blind spot. You check your mirrors, rear-view and side, you turn your head for a quick check and still you miss the vehicle approaching on your side. Today, new cars come with blind spot monitors to help you change lanes, meaning you’ll never get that beep and angry glare again. If you don’t mean to change lanes but your car is unintentionally drifting away, lane-keep assistant will warn you and

3

even gently move your steering wheel to gain your attention. The audible and visual alerts that come with fresh-from-thefactory models, can provide drivers with all the warnings they need to decrease human error and prevent road accidents.

Not only new cars are safe

According to the Department of State Growth’s website, if every car owner had the safest vehicle of its class, road trauma involving light vehicles could be reduced by 26 per cent. But what makes a car safe? In a collision, different cars offer different levels of protection. And different brands offer different safety features in their cars. There’s no doubt that a car with more safety features will offer you the best protection in case of an accident. There’s good news for those of us who haven’t quite made it to that brand-new car smell. Although we have been talking about the latest technology available in new vehicles, you don’t have to have a new car to be considered safe. Young drivers and people living on a budget are more likely to buy used cars. However, the age of the car does not mean a car is unsafe, as many older models comply with mandatory safety regulations. Most car dealers have a detailed history of a car and thoroughly inspect a vehicle before selling it on. They also often offer warranties on important parts of a vehicle

and all that you need to do is make sure the safety features are exactly what you’re looking for. Features like AntiLock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control and airbags are important for personal protection and to avoid collisions. And of course, seatbelts are vital in preventing injuries and fatalities in the event of an accident. Always make sure that seatbelts are in proper working condition before driving or purchasing a car. If you don’t know where to go for a vehicle safety check you can visit ANCAP’s website and search for the Safety Ratings related to the model you have in mind. ANCAP – the Australasian New Car Assessment Program – is

Australasia’s leading independent vehicle safety advocate. They provide you with safety information for not only drivers, but also pedestrians and other road users.

The future

The road to the future is being paved by the safety industry. Both car manufacturers and regulatory bodies are working to prevent any road-related casualties. Tasmania started its road safety campaign “Towards Zero” with the goal of zero fatalities on the states roads. Meanwhile the automotive industry keeps working towards a car that will drive itself, allowing you to take that extended nap before your very important meeting. Until that day comes, you’ll still have to do your own research to find the perfect car.

We understand Tasmanian brands. Find out what we can do for you. marketinggroup.com.au

Toyota leads auto industry to record total

Higher sales and share for the market leader 2017 saw Toyota deliver its best sales in five years, boosted by a record tally for the popular HiLux which topped the sales charts as Australia’s best-selling vehicle for the second year in a row. The industry-leading performance by the “unbreakable” HiLux, supported by record deliveries of Toyota’s SUVs, enabled Toyota to grow its sales and

market share and retain its position as the best-selling automotive brand in Australia. Toyota’s sales growth was a key factor in the overall industry achieving an alltime high of almost 1.19 million newvehicle sales. Australian motorists bought 216,566 vehicles from Toyota dealers last year - the highest tally since 2012 and more than 100,000 deliveries ahead of any other brand. Toyota’s sales increase was 6,956 vehicles or 3.3 per cent compared with the total industry’s growth of 10,983 vehicles or 0.9 per cent. It was the 21st time Toyota has led the Australian new-vehicle market, including the past 15 years in a row, and the 13th time the brand has sold more than 200,000 vehicles locally in a calendar year.

set in 2008 and cemented its place in automotive history as the only vehicle other than a passenger car to be Australia’s best-selling vehicle. It also notched up a 20th consecutive year as Australia’s top-selling commercial vehicle. The ever-green Toyota Corolla - which celebrated 50 years in local showrooms last year - was Australia’s best-selling passenger car for the fifth year in a row with 37,353 sales. Camry - with the launch of a newgeneration car in November - was Australia’s best-selling mid-size car for the 24th year in a row with 23,620 deliveries. Other segment leaders for Toyota were LandCruiser Prado, LandCruiser wagon, HiAce van and HiAce bus.

Toyota’s share of the national market rose to 18.2 per cent (from 17.8 per cent), making it the only brand to reach double figures.

Toyota Australia’s president Matthew Callachor said the industry’s overall improvement last year reflected the gains by Toyota.

Toyota sold more passenger cars, sports-utility vehicles (SUVs) and lightcommercial vehicles (LCVs) than any other brand and topped the sales charts in every state and territory.

“Toyota and the industry have increased sales in each of the past three years and, in 2017, we both achieved alltime records for SUVs and LCVs,” Mr Callachor said.

HiLux, with 47,093 sales, broke its previous record of 42,956 vehicles

“In SUVs, Toyota passed 70,000 sales for the first time and our market share rose

1.1 percentage points while the industry exceeded 465,000 sales. Toyota’s RAV4 had its fifth consecutive year of record sales, passing 20,000 deliveries for the first time. “Records also tumbled for LCVs with Toyota reaching 66,034 sales and the industry exceeding 236,600 sales. Led by HiLux, Toyota increased its market share in this category by almost a full percentage point.” Mr Callachor said SUVs outsold passenger cars across the industry for the first time last year, but the strongest percentage growth in the past two years had occurred in LCVs. “SUV sales have grown 14 per cent during this period while sales of LCVs have grown almost 18.9 per cent. This surge in demand for vehicles like HiLux can be viewed as an extension of the popularity of SUVs. “They’re high-riding vehicles that can take you on your adventures while delivering car-like features and comfort,” Mr Callachor said. In the past decade, Toyota has sold in excess of 2.1 million vehicles in Australia -975,000 sales ahead of any other brand. This equates to more than 260 extra Toyota vehicles being sold every single day throughout that period.

From military ops to urban trend Written by: Ford Renner & Tess Mann

The rapid increase in the number of 4WD vehicles in and around our cities is hard to miss. It seems that everywhere you look there is a 4WD in place of the once prefered station wagons. And while this is not due to a lack of great station wagons on the market, no one can deny the amazing reception towards 4WD vehicles – Compacts, SUVs, On and Off-Road.

The 4WD was originally designed as a military utility vehicle, with great allterrain mobility. They were short and light compared to other military armoured vehicles, and had the capacity to carry at least four passengers. Car brands, such as Jeep and Hummer in the USA and Land Rover in the UK, all began their impressive legacy as military vehicles.

But who actually drives them? Who’s buying these symbols of outdoor freedom and adventure?

4WD saw a rise in popularity as the primary vehicle for producers and offroad enthusiasts. However the demand

for 4WD increasingly comes from innercity drivers who enjoy taking weekend trips and driving off-road for recreation. From camping families to soccer mum, cool guys to successful entrepreneurs, the 4 Wheel Drives are the new musthave. The need for big cars in urban environments has come under scrutiny at times, and according to the Australia Institute, size does matter to some who purchase these types of vehicles. It found

that while men prefer larger 4WD models, women prefer the more compact and luxurious models. In the search for a balance between duty and down time, city dwellers are searching for the perfect car to take them from their routine to a life of adventure and excitement. With so many models and options in the market, if you think a 4WD is not for you, perhaps you have not found the right one.

Industry leading battery and robotics McDougall’s Power Equipment have been operating since 1930. We have been selling Husqvarna products since 1965. It has been amazing to be involved with the company for such a long period of time and witness the change from rudimentary 2-stroke engines to now computer-controlled engines as well as industry leading battery and robotics products. The battery range has impressed everybody that has tried them, and we believe it won’t be too long before petrol machines are a thing of the past. We already have stopped stocking some petrol machines because the battery version out performs them!

IT MOWS, YOU TRIM.

The robotic mowers have been around since 1995 and now out sell petrol powered mowers in Europe, with many countries following the trend. It’s not hard to see why – the lawn is mowed for you, your grass always looks good, weeds tend to disappear, no large ride on mower to store and service, virtually silent and inexpensive to run.

The perfect time to explore Tassie by caravan or motorhome

Written by: Lance Skelton

With some of the most unspoilt and spectacular country you’ll ever see concentrated in just under 70,000 square kilometres, Tasmania is ideal to explore by caravan or motorhome. The summer and autumn period are the peak time for caravanning and motorhome adventures. The vast majority are retired ‘interstaters’ or overseas travellers looking for a unique holiday experience, and Tassie fits the bill perfectly. There are more than 50 caravan parks around the state, some with private ensuite facilities for caravans and motorhome. Many are located in some of the most stunning locations, some right on the edge of the wilderness, others on the edge of golden sandy beaches of the east coast where you can watch the sun rise over the ocean with a cup of tea in a fold-out chair. Others are by the bank of sleepy rivulets where you might spy a platypus foraging for food. Caravanning and motorhome adventures in Tassie provide travellers the ultimate freedom, a chance to be close to nature in all its finest, to develop friendships with like-minded travellers, and to just go where the road takes you. Of course, unlike camping, you’ll always have at your disposal all the mod cons such as a good comfy bed, kitchen and cooking facilities, and your own private toilet.

The enticement of Tasmania for caravanning and motor home enthusiasts. Tasmania has a number of distinct attributes that make it an appealing destination for caravan and motorhome travellers. ACCESSIBILITY Nothing is ever too far away in Tasmania. The roads are generally good, and improving all the time with the addition of dozens of extra passing lanes. CLIMATE It’s a myth that Tasmania is cold. Instead, Tassie has a climate of four seasons, and while it can be pretty nippy in the middle of winter (and even snow in some parts) you can get around in a T-shirt and shorts over the summer and autumn period. CASUAL RELAXED LIFESTYLE There’s a lot to be said for just slowing down and enjoying the journey. In Tassie, the roads are generally quieter, more scenic and have less traffic. Tasmania has an infectious and casual lifestyle that’s easy to get used to. A SAFE PLACE: In a world that is more unstable and unpredictable by the day, Tasmania is a destination perceived as a safe place to visit, which it is.

AMAZING PRODUCE Tasmania has extraordinary local produce that is in demand from the mainland and overseas. This time of year, you’ll find roadside stalls scattered all over the state where you can pull over and pick up fruits and berries at a fraction of the cost of what you’ll pay in the supermarkets.

With the State Government recently announcing plans for a $72 million injection to improve Tasmania’s iconic roads, we can expect even more caravan and motor home enthusiasts visiting the state in the coming years, and soaking up the unique Tassie experience.

Green light for motorcyclists to lane filter in Tasmania. Written by: Lance Skelton

We’ve all seen it happen on our roads; a motorcyclist weaving between stationary or slow-moving vehicles that are heading in the same direction. The manoeuvre is called ‘lane filtering’ and up until recently, it was illegal in Tasmania. New laws that came into effect in late January 2018 means that Tasmanian motorcyclists can now ride past traffic moving in the same direction legally, and joins Queensland, Victoria and South Australia in legalising ‘lane filtering’. The idea behind the new law is all about improving traffic flow, which is becoming an issue in cities like Hobart and Launceston, especially in peak hour. North Motorcycle Riders Association of Tasmania president Danny Penney said he had been pushing for the change for a long time and it would only bring Tasmania into line with the rest of Australia. “Drivers may see it as motorcyclists just jumping the queue, but they’re actually increasing the flow of traffic,” Mr Penney said.

“I don’t see it as a safety issue, the only reason it’ll be a safety issue is if we get cranky drivers trying to impede on motorcyclists,” Mr Penney said

Restrictions to the new law Addressing any potential safety concerns, Mr Penney said riders would still face restrictions when moving through traffic. For example, it will still be illegal for learner and provisional riders to lane filter and a motorcyclist can only navigate through traffic at less than 30km/h. The manoeuvre is also restricted in school zones during school hours, next to parked cars and between a vehicle and the kerbside. The penalty for any motorcyclist caught lane filtering illegally is a $159 fine and two demerit points, which is the lowest lane filtering fine in Australia. In NSW, riders can be fined as much as $659 and lose three demerit points (but no double demerits) for lane filtering breaches. In QLD the fine is $341 and three demerit points, and in SA it’s $363 and three demerit points.
