Warm & cosy
Written by: Lily Jeffries
Winter has hit and after a day in the cold, there’s nothing better than hopping into a nice warm bed. Here are some tips for achieving the ultimate level of comfort and warmth throughout the coming frosty months. Investing in a decent doona is a must. Let’s not mess about here – although some of the fancier duck or goose feather quilts are expensive, there are plenty of
cheaper options that will make a genuine change to your bed temperature overnight. Plus, replacing your bedding every couple of Winter’s is necessary in maintaining a hygienic sleeping space and reducing the number of nasties that circulate – from dust, to sweat and everything in between. It’s all about insulation. Here’s the recipe for the coziest bed you’ll ever slide into: put down a mattress topper or protector, followed by cosy flannelette sheets, a woollen blanket on top of the top sheet (the secret, ultrawarm layer), followed by a decent quilt, and then another, heavier blanket to keep the warmth in. Guaranteed you won’t need a heater on overnight or an electric blanket with this combination! Although a good tip is to keep a dressing gown and pair of slippers close by for any late-night trips to the kids or the loo! You don’t
want that Winter chill catching you when you get out of bed. We also have some other tips for maintaining your linen and bedding over Winter. It’s a great idea to replace your pillowcases, sheets and towels leading into the cooler months. Nothing worse than getting out of a nice, hot shower and trying to dry yourself with what feels like a sheet of tree bark. Treat yourself and the family to some fluffy new towels and flannelette bedding, they’ll be sure to thank you for it! An alternative to flannelette sheets is silk. Silk is light weight, will regulate your body temperature and is great for people with allergies, as it’s naturally resistant to dust mites and mould! It’s important to wash and properly dry all of your Summer bedding and linen before storage – if there’s any body oils, dust, dirt or dampness it can promote mould and mildew build up. However, a good tip to
remember is to not pack it too tightly! Surprisingly linen needs to ‘breathe’, so make sure you leave some room between piles rather than stuffing everything into the cupboard. A handy idea is to fold sheet and doona-cover sets into the set’s pillowcase, that way they’re always easy to find and you never lose parts of the set. Pack into clean plastic tubs without a lid, rather than cardboard or a sealed container. This allows the air to circulate and doesn’t attract any nasties as the plastic is clean and sterile, unlike cardboard which can hold moisture and smells. You could also try adding small sachets or fabric bags of lavender to deter insects, while keeping your bedding smelling fresh and aiding in a good night’s sleep, as lavender promotes relaxation. Keep all of these tips in mind when preparing your home for the big Winter chill and Create A Home that’s warm and cosy this June.

Up and about this Winter
Written by: Lily Jeffries
It’s going to get cold, that’s a given. But just because we’ll be regretfully forking out extra for the electricity bill and going through more Cold&Flu tablests than anyone should, doesn’t mean that Winter has to be all grumbling, multiple layers and freezing toes. Here are some ideas to help you (hopefully) stay warm throughout June and have some Winter fun. Staying at home doesn’t mean you have to mope around or watch television just because you’re bored. How about having a nostalgic movie marathon? Any excuse to get the lollies and popcorn out, right? Show the kids some of your favourite childhood films, let David Attenborough educate you all about our diverse world, or play cartoons all day. You can’t go wrong with a family movie marathon. Better yet, build a fort to watch the movies in! Whether you take over the whole loungeroom or throw a blanket over some chairs, it’s always more fun to watch films
in a fort (whether you’re a kid, or not!). Camping – the idea may fill some people with dread, bringing up thoughts of freezing toes and hard sleeping mats, no toilets or the smell of the campfire sticking to all your clothes. Avoid all the potential dramas, and camp out with the family in your own backyard! With easy access to the loo, the kitchen for hot food and drinks, plus you can run inside for an extra blanket or pillow – backyard camping is great fun! And if in the end everyone is too cold to stick it out the whole night, you can run back to your own, cosy bed with ease. Learning about your family tree is a neat way to kill a few hours inside. Whether you look it up via an online program or get out the box of family photos for a browse, it’s always lovely going back through memories and chatting about family stories. Maybe you
could call a relative to ask more questions and start writing down some exciting tales, or you could create a scrapbook for someone’s next birthday or anniversary. Winter hiking. It might sound like the last thing you would want to do on a cold day, but it will get the heart pumping, warm you up quickly and be a great chance to chat to the kids about how nature changes with the seasons. Collect interesting sticks or leaves that you may find, and keep an eye out for some animal activity! What about hosting a boardgame or trivia night? This is a great idea for all ages, as there are some hilarious adult-only card games out there, plus so many family favourites that everyone will enjoy! You can’t go wrong with a boardgame, some snacks and a few competitive attitudes – just wait to see who begins a war over Monopoly!
Why not learn something new and look to the night sky for inspiration. There are many incredible constellations and stars that shine beautifully bright on a cold Winter’s night when the sky is clear. You could rent a book from the library or look up some tips online, but stargazing with a blanket and some hot chocolate is a relaxing, interesting and romantic way to spend a chilly evening. Create A Home that’s full of life and fun this chilly season.

Transfer your focus and go with the flow Air flow in a home with a heater is an important issue when it comes to conserving winter warmth.
Tasmanian company Brierley Hose and Handling, based at Derwent Park, manufactures the duct and makes up warm-air transfer kits.
Modern fan-forced heaters can pump out so much heat that, if they are run at full capacity, it can be unbearably hot in that room, while an adjacent room can still be cold.
These kits are an economical, efficient method of quickly transferring excess heat from a solid fuel, electric or gas room heater to another part of the home.
Leaving the connecting door open is not the complete answer because often most of the heat is trapped above the door level and heat transfer can be inefficient. If the home has high ceilings, the convected heat tends to stay up high – well above the floor level where people and pets are looking for warmth.
A duct intake is positioned in the room with the heater and insulated ducting is run through the room cavity to a diffuser in one or more other rooms, such as bedrooms. A dual-bladed German Blauberg inline fan with a five-year warranty pumps the air through the system, forcing it well down into the target room.
The kits come in three models, covering lengths up to three, six and twelve metres. The system is also ideal for exhausting cooking odours and moisture-laden air outside through the eaves or a wall for bathrooms, laundries and kitchens.
Call in to check out the range at Brierley Hose and Handling, 1 Lampton Ave, Derwent Park or call 6272 8144. In the North of the state go to 130 Forster St, Invermay or call 6337 8444.
Why buy another heater, when you can transfer excess heat to other rooms!

Winter wardrobe prep
Written by: Lily Jeffries
Goodbye T-shirts. See you later thongs and sandals. Until next time, floppy sun hat. It’s that time of year – the time to pack away our Summer gear with a sad smile, remembering fondly the warm beach breezes, many outdoor picnics and colourful sunsets with sad smiles. It’s ok though, it’s fine, because Summer will be back! We just have to get through Winter first… As we greet the cold unwillingly and with just a little bit of dread for those icy mornings unfreezing the car windows with buckets of water, there’s no better time to unpack all those lovely jumpers and scarves from the back of the wardrobe. You know you won’t be needing your
bathers or loose cotton shirts for a while, so why not think about maximizing your cupboard space? Storing your Summer outfits in suitcases is a handy idea, or even going a step further and vacuum sealing warmer weather items is a great way to make more space in your cupboards! Bring all the thermals and thick socks to the front of your drawers for easy access, for those precious moments between rolling out of bed and getting dressed could land you with the flu if you’re not prepared! Take a look at your essentials – maybe it’s time to splurge on a pair of decent 100% wool socks, a scarf made from beautiful Tasmanian sheep or possum yarn, maybe even a new pair of Ugg Boots? It’s these everyday items that need some
love and attention – and maybe replacing – as we gear up for the big chill. You’ll thank yourself for it, guaranteed. This is also an important time of year to consider others. If you have any warm clothing you’re not attached to, or that you haven’t worn in years, then donating it to a Winter appeal is a fantastic way to help the less fortunate. There are many families unprepared for the cold, and any donated items help to keep them warm and comfortable. Keep an eye out for the many charities taking donations – clothing, canned goods, shoes and blankets – or give your unwanted things a quick wash and take a packed bag or two to your local charity store. Make sure you also show your pets
some love this Winter by updating their bedding. Giving blankets and material beds a decent wash will get rid of any summer dust mites or potential mold spores, as well as fluffing up the material to make sure its fresh and soft for your animal pal. You may want to consider an enclosed kennel or shed to keep your pet clean and dry, especially if they’re not allowed indoors! There are many local stores that stock a variety of sizes and models to ensure your furry friend is protected from the elements this Winter. Plus, you can browse a selection of coats and jumpers perfect for any pet, making sure they’re as toasty warm as you are. Create A Home that’s organised and Winter-ready over the next few months.
