WHEN you think of Toyota, a high performance sports car doesn’t first spring to mind. Most think of the brand’s high selling Hilux or Land Cruiser and smaller vehicles like the Corolla but between 1986 and 2002, the Toyota Supra was one of the most reliable and powerful sports cars on the market, outperforming many big brands like Porsche and Aston Martin of the day.

The famous Toyota Supra MK IV

Index TOYOTA SUPRA CARS THE GREAT EASTERN DRIVE

How can one simple car be such a rev head’s dream?

02 04 14

The car was made even more famous thanks to its starring role in 2001’s Fast and Furious, presenting fans of the blockbuster franchise with a 1994 Toyota Supra MK IV. Today, the car, which was bought new for about $40,000 back in the day, can sell for a sweet six figures. The Supra wasn’t

born to be special but thanks to Toyota’s reliability, it could be easily modified to become a rocket.

It was reliable and easily modified to become a rocket. The history behind the car Originally built as a stylish, mid price sedan with a big engine, the Supra was a spin off of the brand’s popular Celica, which hit the market in the 1970s. In 1978, Toyota produced the Celica XX. In North America, Toyota didn’t like the name so they changed it to the Toyota Supra instead and marketed it as a more powerful version of the base model with a longer hood. For its 1982 production year, Toyota redesigned the Celica Supra as well as the entire Celica line-up. In Japan, they were known as Celica XX, but everywhere else the Celica Supra name was used. The XX was still based on the

Celica platform but there were several key differences, including the design of the front end and fully retractable popup headlights, and the increase in length and wheelbase to accommodate a larger engine. In the coming years, the engine continued to develop – in 1983, there was an increase in power output to 150 hp, in 1984, power output was increased on the 5-speed models with a bump up to 160 hp. In 1985, power output was increased to 161 hp and the engine received a redesigned throttle position sensor as well as a new EGR system and knock sensor. With this increase in power, the Supra was able to propel itself from 0–60 mph in 8.4 seconds and netted a 16.1 second quarter-mile at 137 km per hour. Toyota welcomed the third generation of Supras in 1986. The ties between the Celica and the Supra were cut and the cars were sold as two completely different models. The Celica changed to front-wheel drive, while the Supra kept its rear-wheel-drive platform. The engine was updated to a more powerful 3.0 L inline 6 rated at 200 hp though it added quite a bit of weight to the car. Although initially only available with naturally aspirated engines, a turbocharged engine was added in the 1987 model.

June/2018

SWITCHING GEARS • Issue 005

The new Supra would continue to upscale and become a showcase for Toyota. In 1987, the first A70 Supra Turbo was introduced. The inter-cooled, turbocharged version of the 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder engine boosted power to 230 hp. The Turbo model also included an engine oil cooler and integrated rear spoiler. Fast-forward to 1993 and the Supra had evolved to its best form. This blasted past the old engine and was completely redesigned - lighter, with rounded body styling, featuring two new engines - a naturally aspirated Toyota 2JZ-GE producing 220 hp but Toyota upgraded the Supra’s turbo engine with smaller, steel wheeled turbochargers and bigger fuel injectors. This increased the power output to 320 hp. The 2JZ engine was virtually indestructible thanks to Toyota’s reliability and any mechanic who knew

their way around the tools could modify this engine, some reportedly reaching 800 hp, more than a formula one car of the time. Few engines have been easier to modify into and with a Toyota engine and better turbo, and Toyota’s first 6-speed gear box, this engine got famous fast, turning it into a movie star. Next to Paul Walker and Vin Diesel, this car got the lead role in the original Fast and Furious.

The dream will never end Unfortunately, Toyota pulled the car from its floors in 1998 due to poor sales and ceased sales in 2002. However, car enthusiasts have continued to keep the dream alive, buying, selling and modifying Supras, creating a hype around it and making it one of the most in demand vehicles on the second hand

3

market. In mint condition, a Supra can sell for six figures meaning you could be sitting on a gold mine if you have a Supra lying around.

What can we expect for the future? So what does the future of the Supra look like? In June 2016, a trademark application for the Supra nameplate was filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office and according to Autocar, the new Supra is set to debut some time this year. The car will likely feature rear wheel drive, four-cylinder engines and it has been confirmed that the car will offer a turbocharged inline-6 engine with BMW believed to be suppling the engines. Either way, the future is bright for the future of the Supra and even better for devoted fans.

Are you ready for the next wild storm, and the potential for vehicle flood damage? Last month, the city of Hobart experienced one of worst storms in two or three decades. In fact, more than 100 millimetres of rain fell during an intense 24-hour period. In the Hobart CBD, Macquarie Street saw some two dozen cars swept down the street in a raging torrent of water that took anything and everything in its path. Insurance companies quickly determined these vehicles were a ‘write-off’. To clarify, a ‘write-off’ simply means the vehicle is too badly damaged to be repaired to a standard that is safe for road use. While it was a ‘no brainer’ for insurance assessors to write-off all the submerged vehicles in Macquarie Street, what about

those car owners whose vehicle wasn’t written off but still had flood damage? Many car owners were left inconvenienced, and unsure about what to do in all the chaos. The bad news is that we can expect more storms in the coming months, and many expects are predicting these storms could be just as intense as what happened last month. So what can you do if your car is damaged by flash flooding, or something similar?

Don’t try to starting the car

The first 24 hours are vital. If your vehicle should ever experience flood damage, there’s a few steps you can take to reduce any long-term damage. Once the water level subsides, and it is safe to do so, It’s important to inspect the vehicle within the first 24 hours. Importantly, don’t try starting the car if you suspect any water has got inside the electronic system, the fuel system or the transmission. You’ll only do more damage. You should also disconnect the battery, which will protect you from the possibility of electric shock while you check around your car.

Do Disconnect the battery

June/2018

The higher the floodwater has risen in the vehicle, and the longer it may have been partly submerged, the greater the chance that damage has occurred, or will occur at a later date.

SWITCHING GEARS • Issue 005 Ok. So you’re looking at the vehicle for the first time after the storm. Take a good look inside. (What can you see?) If water has managed to get in through the door seals and soaked the carpets, then the carpets will need to be dried out as quickly as possible. Left for too long, and the carpets will start to go mouldy. Once this happens the mould will create a dreadful smell throughout the vehicle that will take ages to get out. So grab some old cloths, sponges and a bucket, and start getting rid of the water. Open all the windows and doors to let the air help to dry out the carpets, and if it’s sunny then lay everything that’s been wet out to dry. Of course, if the carpets are too soaked, then the carpet and underlay may well need to come out

9

completely, and be replaced. (For this tricky job, you’ll need to contact a car trimmer). If water has found its way into the ‘electronics’, then it’s another problem altogether. The electronic circuitry is usually located under the dashboard. Even though the circuitry is designed with seals to stop water getting in and corroding the parts, the unit may still need time to dry out. It’s the combination of water and electricity that has the potential to fry the electrical components, and then you’ll really be up wet creek. So again, don’t try starting the car at this point.

which is a tell-tale sign that there’s very likely water in your engine, and if that’s the case, you’ll need to get your vehicle towed to your local mechanic or dealership for a proper assessment. If this all feels too hard, then there’s always the option of calling a roadside mechanic who will be able to make a more accurate assessment of the damage. You may need to be a little patient though. If there’s been a big nasty storm, there will be dozens of motorists (possibly hundreds) who will be in a similar predicament to yourself. Above all else, don’t start the vehicle until you know it’s safe to do so.

Now lift up the car bonnet and check the dipstick. Look for water droplets,

The top road trip in Australia:

The Great Eastern Drive Written by Skye Davidson

Wineglass Bay Freycinet National Park

We’ve mapped out the top places to stop, and things to do, along the way. Undulating, ever-changing and beautiful: Tasmania’s east coast has much to offer meanderers, explorers and pleasureseekers alike. But it is the region’s famous road trip - The Great Eastern Drive - that encapsulates everything that makes Tasmania (and Australia) unique, over a 176-kilometre road stretching from Orford in the south to St Helens in the north. Earlier this year, the Great Eastern Drive was acknowledged as the top road trip in Australia by Trip Advisor and Ford and it truly doesn’t disappoint. Don’t be fooled by the seemingly short length of this drive, it is a truly adaptable and diverse journey offering up some of the best in food, wine, scenery and outdoor-adventures. Drive it in a day, a weekend or spend nearly a week taking in everything that this special pocket of the world has to offer.

Maria Island

Just one township over from your starting point at Orford, Triabunna offers a gateway (via a 30-minute ferry ride) to idyllic and tranquil Maria Island. With no shops or cars, the island boasts an astonishing array of wildlife and plants, making for some of the best bushwalking in the country. Not-to-be-missed activities include: hiking to the top of the island’s peaks (Bishop and Clerk) for the best panoramic views, exploring the ghost town with a convict past (Darlington), checking out the ancient fossils at Fossil Cliffs and taking in the beautifully patterned sandstone Painted Cliffs at Hopground Beach. Where to stay? The old penitentiary at Darlington offers some basic bunk-style accommodation, but there are also free camping sites scattered around the island.

Maria Island 1: Beautiful beach 2: Convict house in Darlington 3: Kangaroo wildlife

Upon returning back to the mainland, follow the pink-stained cliffs and white beaches of the Freycinet Peninsula to Swansea. Here you can relax and have a glass of the region’s famous wine, grown locally at several boutique vineyards. If you’re looking to do a bit of shopping the region is also known for its high quality wool. For a spot of history, don’t forget to make a trip just outside of town to the convict-built Spiky Bridge. You can finish your exploration of Swansea by going for a swim, surf or dive at Mayfield Bay Coastal Reserve: 16 hectares of coastal reserve just a 15-minute drive out of Swansea. Where to stay? The area is flush for accommodation options, from backpacking, to motels and hotels, to cabins, airbnb and camping.

Where to eat? There are limited food options on the island, so don’t forget to bring food with you on the ferry.

Where to eat? For culinary enthusiasts, you can’t go past a meal at Piermont Restaurant. Those who want to wet their appetite with more accessible local cuisine should stop by The Bark Mill Tavern & Bakery and/or Salt Shaker Cafe & Restaurant. Swansea Sunset at a local vineyard

Where to drink? Pop into Spring Vale, Gala Estate and/or Milton wineries for some of the most popular local drops.

SWITCHING GEARS • Issue 005 Bay of Fires

Perhaps saving the best till last - there’s nothing nicer than finishing this road trip with time spent absorbing the natural wonder that is the Bay of Fires. Here you’ll see white sandy beaches, pink and grey cliffs and crystal clear water. The 29-kilometre stretch is defined by its rocky gullies, deserted beaches and secluded inlets. Visitors can spend their time swimming, surfing, sun lounging or diving at the main beach (Binalong Bay), or venture further-out on a two-day trek past some

15 of the more untouched beaches. There is also an opportunity to learn about some of the rich local history, particularly with regards the original Aboriginal inhabitants. Where to stay? Most visitors to the Bay of Fires choose to camp at one of the designated areas, however there are some limited eco-lodge options available. Where to eat and drink? The Bay of Fires Winery is a must for any food and wine enthusiast.

Bay of Fires Binalong Bay

Wineglass Bay

Only 30-minutes from Swansea, lies one of the top ten beaches in the world: Wineglass Bay. As if the name wasn’t inviting enough, Wineglass Bay is known for its incredible views, wildlife, scenery, fresh seafood and outdoor activities. Spend your time swimming, boating, fishing, surfing, snorkelling, diving and/or sea kayaking around the picturesque beach. The more adventurous of travellers can embark on the award-winning Freycinet Experience Walk: a four-day guided walk covering the entire length of the Freycinet peninsula (including Wineglass Bay). The walk covers some of the same tracks walked by the area’s original Aboriginal inhabitants thousands of years ago (the Oyster Bay Tribe of Tasmanian Aborigines) and is steeped in rich Australian history. Wineglass Bay also offers scenic flight options, for a full panoramic experience of the area, and is also a perfect vantage point to see pods of dolphins or migrating whales (when in season). Where to stay? Try and nab one of the lodges overlooking Great Oyster Bay. Where to eat and drink? The Edge Restaurant or Freycinet Marine Farm both offer some superb dining choices that pair the area’s fresh produce with some truly remarkable local wines.

Bicheno

If you drive north from Wineglass Bay you will come across a quaint family seaside town called Bicheno. Bicheno maintains the high standard in amazing views, scenery, bushwalking and beach combing opportunities, but also offers some extraordinary wildlife experiences. Here you can watch the dusk parade of little penguins, see and learn about Tasmanian devils or head out on the water for a glass-bottom boat marine wildlife tour. Where to stay? The area is a popular tourist holiday destination and has an array of accommodation options to suit everyone, from campers to astute travellers. Where to eat and drink? Pasini Bicheno is well-loved by locals and visitors alike. Alternatively, visit Bicheno in mid November and wine and dine at its annual Food and Wine Festival.

Regardless of your destination, a road trip is all about the journey!

St Mary’s Excelent bushwalking and hiking options

St Helens Dawn at the harbour

St Helens

If you leave St Mary’s and drive north for another 30-odd minutes you’ll arrive at St Helens: the largest town on Tasmania’s north-east coast. If you’re a lover of the ocean, you’ll love St Helens. Overlooking beautiful Georges Bay, this is a town that is best experienced on the water. Hire a boat, or join a game fishing charter and witness waters awash with game fish such as Albacore Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna. For those that don’t have their sea legs, you can take the walk from St Helens Point Conservation Area to Beer Barrel Beach to see the incredible Peron Dunes. Where to stay? With more than 6 hotels in a 10-kilometre radius of the town, along with other standard accommodation, backpacking and camping options - there’s no shortages of places to stay in St Helens. Where to eat? Visitors to St Helens should spend their time sampling local seafood at one of the many esteemed cafes and restaurants. Where to drink? Bay Bar & Bistro is a favourite with the locals.

St Mary’s

40-minutes from Bicheno lies St Mary’s: another seaside town boasting rich history, great food and awesome outdoor experiences. Visitors should make use of the area’s excellent bushwalking and hiking options, such as: the walk to Grey Mare’s tail waterfall or climbing South Sister or St Patrick’s Head. The town itself is littered with great cafes, galleries and shopping that are bound to keep travellers amused and entertained. Where to stay? Truly immerse yourself in Tasmanian east coast life, by staying in one of St Mary’s heritage holiday houses or bed and breakfasts. Where to eat? Don’t leave St Mary’s without trying some delicious pancakes at Mount Elephant Pancakes. Where to drink? Grab a pint at the local: St Mary’s Hotel. We hope our recommendations enable you to experience a journey that leaves you awestruck, satisfied, energised, inspired and relaxed.
