Transfer your focus and go with the flow Air flow in a home with a heater is an important issue when is comes to conserving winter warmth.
Tasmanian company Brierley Hose and Handling, based at Derwent Park, manufactures the duct and makes up warm-air transfer kits.
Modern fan-forced heaters can pump out so much heat that, if they are run at full capacity, it can be unbearably hot in that room, while an adjacent room can still be cold.
These kits are an economical, efficient method of quickly transferring excess heat from a solid fuel, electric or gas room heater to another part of the home.
Leaving the connecting door open is not the complete answer because often most of the heat is trapped above the door level and heat transfer can be inefficient. If the home has high ceilings, the convected heat tends to stay up high – well above the floor level where people and pets are looking for warmth.
A duct intake is positioned in the room with the heater and insulated ducting is run through the room cavity to a diffuser in one or more other rooms, such as bedrooms. A dual-bladed German Blauberg inline fan with a five-year warranty pumps the air through the system, forcing it well down into the target room.
The kits come in three models, covering lengths up to three, six and twelve metres. The system is also ideal for exhausting cooking odours and moisture-laden air outside through the eaves or a wall for bathrooms, laundries and kitchens.
Call in to check out the range at Brierley Hose and Handling, 1 Lampton Ave, Derwent Park or call 6272 8144. In the North of the state go to 130 Forster St, Invermay or call 6337 8444.
Why buy another heater, when you can transfer excess heat to other rooms!

How to create a private sanctuary in your garden Written by: Lance Skelton
Is there a section of your garden that you simply don’t use? Maybe a dead zone in a corner of your garden where there’s not a lot of sunlight, and the only thing you seem to be able to grow is weeds? (Sound familiar?) You’d be amazed at how quickly you can turn this ugly part of your garden into a sanctuary that can become a feature of the garden, and add value to your property at the same time.
Build a garvel courtyard area with a fire pit Imagine spending a Friday or Saturday night sitting around a raging cast iron fire pit, looking at the hypnotic glow of the burning embers, and sharing a bottle of red and some good conversation with a few good friends. There’s something wonderfully simple and earthy about reconnecting with nature in your garden, looking up at the stars, and even thanking those lucky stars for the good fortune you have to be living in a place as beautiful and as safe as Tasmania. For something that can look so chic and gorgeous, a courtyard with a fire pit is not difficult to create. Nor does it need to be that expensive. A gravel style courtyard area is something that can be done over a couple of weekends, and requires more brawn than brains at the end of the day.
The process for building a gravel courtyard
sorted in one afternoon from a timber and hardware store.
Start by measuring the area you’d like to fill. If you’re lucky, then you may even be working with a hedge or a fence on one or two sides that has a certain level of privacy to begin with.
If the ground needs some levelling, gravel will mask the issue better than laying pavers or bricks as the base, and where any imperfections with the levelling are magnified. What’s more, if you’re laying bricks or pavers, the job instantly becomes more difficult and expensive, and you may well need to call in a tradie.
Once you’ve worked out the size of the area, you’ll need to buy some thick and heavy lengths of timber that will form a border and will keep the gravel contained. Two blokes and a trailer can get this
The most physical part is the initial digging. You’ll need to get out the
shovel, put on some gloves, and do a bit of basic excavating to remove the topsoil so you’re left with the harder soil base. By doing this you’ll make a sturdier base for your gravel courtyard than having soft spongy topsoil. When digging, keep in mind that your gravel should be at about 10cm deep from the bottom of the enclosure. Before you lay the gravel though, buy yourself some inexpensive landscaping fabric to lay down over the soil base. This makes for an effective weed barrier and takes

virtually no time to lay. For some reason, this easy step is often overlooked by Do It Yourselfers, and can make a huge difference to the enjoyment of the area. After the landscaping fabric has been rolled out, the next step is the gravel. Ideally though, you’ll be using two types. The first is a layer of road rock that goes directly onto the fabric and fills half to threequarters of the area that has been
dug. Road rock contains larger pieces of gravel that are angular in shape. This type of gravel is not only less expensive than other types of gravel, but the angular pieces lock together, forming a strong base. For a neater job, hire a small plate compactor to compress the road rock base, which is available for rental at most hire tool stores. Now it’s time to add the decorative gravel. You’ll find lots of choices

available when it comes to colour, ranging from tan to gold to rust. Remember though, darker colours retain heat, while lighter colours can sometimes look stark. For the most natural look, look for tan, grey or light brown gravel. If you’re not sure what’s right for you, then talk to your local landscaping supply company. They’ll also be able to recommend how many cubic metres of gravel you’ll need once you give them the area you’re working with.
you have kids and pets.
Another consideration is the shape of the gravel itself. Round gravel, such as pea gravel, has the most give and is the most comfortable to walk on. Angular gravels, similar to road base, are less comfortable to walk on, but the rocks lock together, maintaining a neat, compacted form longer. Angular gravel is usually a better choice if
All that’s left is to grab yourself some dry wood, some kindling, some fire lighters, and a nice bottle of red.
If you’ve done all of this, then you’re in the home straight. Of course, you’ll need a fire pit, and you’ll find plenty to choose from at one of the big hardware chains. Basic fire pits start at around $100. You might even think about picking up some outdoor tables and chairs while you’re at it. Again, there’s plenty to choose from, ranging from simple plastic combos to lovely wrought iron creations.
If you’re like most people, then your new courtyard and fire pit will become one of your favourite entertaining areas, and all up you’ve probably spent about $1500.
