VITALITY OUR HOSPITAL
M
aui is our home. The energy and vitality of our island home surround us each day… it is what makes Maui “nō ka ‘oi.” This same vitality is also reflected in the work happening every day at Maui Memorial Medical Center. MMMC is always open to those who need help and healing, so that they may return to their family and friends and the activities they love. MMMC has grown tremendously over the years in order to meet the needs of our community. This growth has been possible because of the support of friends like you. And with your support once again, we are now embarking on an exciting time as we develop a new public/private partnership that will allow us to continue to provide the best possible healthcare for everyone in Maui County.
OUR FOUNDATION
Maui’s active lifestyle is evident 24/7 - and MMMC is there for you just as often.
Our hospital’s 1,400 employees - doctors, nurses, clinical staff, and administrators - are your neighbors, friends, and family. It is the vitality of our people, and of our island home, that continues to inspire us each day as we work to create a compassionate and healing environment responsive to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of our patients. The MMMC Foundation strives to help our hospital provide the best care possible by funding capital improvement projects, patient assistance programs, staff training, and community outreach activities, and by purchasing state-ofthe-art equipment. We hope you enjoy reading about how the MMMC Foundation works together with our hospital and our community to provide compassionate healing that you can depend on.
OUR MISSION Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation will support the health and wellness of the community of Maui and our visitors by ensuring Maui Memorial Medical Center has the resources needed to provide the highest level of medical care.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR BOARD
From the mountains to the sea, our community hospital is here to serve you, your family and all our Maui visitors.
Dear Friends, It is hard to believe that it has been five years since I started my term as a Foundation Board Member. The time has flown by, and I am proud of all the Foundation has accomplished during this period. My fellow Board members are dedicated, hard-working, and passionate about the quality of healthcare on Maui. As we look to the future, so many changes are on the horizon. With the legislation that recently passed, 2015 and 2016 will bring new opportunities for the hospital to partner with another non-profit healthcare organization in order to continue providing the best healthcare to our Maui community and visitors. I hope we can count on your continued support during this time of transition. Regardless of the final choice of a new operating partner, philanthropy and community support will continue to be an important factor in how Maui Memorial Medical Center serves the healthcare needs of everyone on Maui. On behalf of the MMMC Foundation’s Board of Directors, mahalo for your continued generosity! Sincerely, David Jorgensen, Esq.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR FOUNDATION
Dear Friends, Imagine a place where state of the art technology and the human touch of healing work together seamlessly. Where lives are saved, and new lives are brought into the world. Where no one is turned away, regardless of their ability to pay. Where is this place, you might ask? It’s right here at Maui Memorial Medical Center. With the investment of community-minded people like you, MMMC strives each day to reach the goal of quality healthcare for everyone. Our cardiovascular department meets or exceeds national benchmarks for quality and safety in virtually all areas. (Society of Thoracic Surgeons, 2014) Our infection rates are the same or lower than the national baseline. (National Healthcare Safety Network) We were recently certified by The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Care Facility. We have created healing environments such as the community garden that is open to patients and visitors, and soothing artwork that is on display in areas like the new Maui Lani Outpatient Clinic. Thanks to your support, each year the MMMC Foundation works to help make MMMC the best it can be by purchasing new equipment, investing in staff education and supporting community health programs. Compared to the rest of the world, Maui is still a small community. Because of that, we each have the ability to make a tremendous impact on our neighbors. Thank you for supporting your hospital. Warmest aloha, Lisa Varde, CFRE

Judy Kodama, Director of Nursing; Lisa Varde, Executive Director – MMMC Foundation, Maui Cub Scouts Pack #53; Jennifer Omuro, Oncology Department Nurse Manager; Danette Kong, Chaplain. Maui Cub Scouts Pack #53 assembled and donated care packages for oncology patients receiving chemotherapy at MMMC. Packages included items like tissue, gum, lotion and a handwritten get well note from pack members. Cub Scout mother Lia Tuitele said, “The mother of one of our pack members had chemotherapy treatment at MMMC, so it was only fitting that we give back to the department for the wonderful

care that she received.” These caring scouts wanted to make sure that patients received the packages during the holiday season. “We treat approximately 100 patients a week, and these packages will really brighten the day for everyone receiving chemotherapy treatment,” said Oncology Nurse Manager Jen Omuro. Mahalo to MMMC’s Aulani Delatori, Lia Tuitele and Pack #53 for this wonderful holiday gift!
MMMC Foundation came in First Place for the second straight year as the non-profit raising the most funds at the Visitor Industry Charity Walk! With the help of hundreds of hospital employees and generous donors, we raised $90,008.30 to win the top spot at the walk held on May 10. Funds raised will be used throughout the various hospital departments for education, supplies, team building activities, and new equipment. A heartfelt Mahalo to the many, many people who helped make this happen.
THE COMMUNITY SPIRIT
BOARD MEMBERS & DONORS RECOGNIZED In March 2014, the MMMC Foundation Board recognized new and outgoing Board members, as well as generous donors at a reception and dinner. Sandra Florence, Dr. Colleen Inouye, Dr. Daniel Garcia, Rowena Dagdag-Andaya, and Lyle Matsunaga were all honored for their many years of service on the Board. David Jorgensen, Board President
Terri and Dave Jorgensen, Tamar and Steve Goodfellow, Sandra Florence and R. Clay Sutherland.
commented that “We cannot thank these Board members enough – they greatly increased our capacity to help support MMMC.” Vince Bagoyo, Auriol Flavell, Dr. Benjamin DeLisa, Dr. Colin Lee, Helen MacArthur, Beverly Kurokawa, and Richard Wojcik were introduced and welcomed as new members.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY MAKE ER WAIT TIME MORE PLEASANT The Maui Friends of the Library generously donated a bookcase, books and magazines for our Emergency Room. Volunteers from Friends of the Library donate their time to replenish the supply every week, helping to make the time go by faster and decreasing anxiety for those patients and families waiting in the Emergency Room.
KAY JEWELERS CUSTOMERS GIVE BACK During the holiday season, dozens of Kay Jewelers customers purchased stuffed bears and puppies at the store, which in turn were donated to MMMC. These stuffed animals help bring comfort to our keiki when they are faced with an Emergency Room visit or hospital stay. Mahalo Kay Jewelers and their customers for these sweet gifts.
HOSPITAL GOES GREEN WITH A NEW GARDEN
Emergency Room and Hale East staff with the Kay Jewelers stuffed animals.
In April 2014, MMMC volunteers worked to create a new hospital garden in the Wailuku Tower Courtyard. Former Foundation Board Member Dr. Colleen Inouye’s vision of a community garden became a reality, as volunteers built and filled planters with lettuce, kale, bok choy, Japanese eggplant, green onions, parsley, and more. Dr. Inouye envisioned a hospital garden “where patients and staff could come out and enjoy the area.” She also hoped that herbs and vegetables in the garden could be used in MMMC’s Cafeteria. Hospital gardens across the nation have been found to be part of the healing and wellness process for both patients and staff. This is only the second hospital garden in Hawaii. Mahalo to the many individuals and businesses whose generosity made this possible, including Dr. Colleen Inouye and Dr. Frank Baum, Alan Brisley – Aloha Foodscapes, Community Work Day – Malama Maui Nui, ISI Hawaii Water Solutions, Michael Conway – Conway Excavation, Miyake Concrete, and our many MMMC employee volunteers.

Lyndsay Murray, RN - MMMC; Hillary Vidinhar, CDA - Dental Hygiene Student; Joyce Yamada, Coordinator - UH Maui Dental Assisting Program; Hope Woodward Lalonde - Dental Assisting Student; Lisa Varde, Executive Director - MMMC Foundation; Chrissa Takahashi, RN - MMMC
On August 1, former Foundation Board Vice President Sandra Florence was honored as one of the finalists at the Mike Lyons Palaka Awards, presented by the Rotary Club of Kahului. The annual awards recognize outstanding volunteer service to the community. Sandra’s vision and boundless energy helped the Foundation to purchase wireless EKG machines for all Maui County ambulances, and she successfully spearheaded a $2 million capital campaign for the Heart Brain & Vascular Center. Her “go-getter” attitude makes a difference in our Maui community. She strongly feels that our community deserves to have the best medical services right here at home and she continues to advocate for this. Mahalo Sandra!

Since 2009, MMMC Foundation has partnered with the UH Maui College Dental Assisting Program to produce dental health packets for all newborn babies and parents. The packets contain information on proper oral care practices for babies, a child-size toothbrush, and tooth wipes. The goal of the program is to provide access to oral health information for all socio-economic groups, thereby
HEART PILLOWS MADE WITH LOVE Heart surgery patients are faced with a multitude of challenges to overcome on their path to a full recovery. Heart pillows are used to support the area of the chest that is healing and reduce the amount of pain patients experience when coughing, moving, or taking deep breaths. They become the patient’s most trusted companion in aiding them to a quick and healthy recovery. A special heartfelt mahalo to Kaunoa West Maui Senior Center members, and also to members of Alpha Delta Kappa Omicron Chapter, who both volunteer their time to sew heart pillows each year for MMMC.
reducing Hawaii’s tooth decay rates. Many parents say these packets are their only source of information on how to care for their children’s teeth. Mahalo UHMC for brightening the smiles of all of Maui’s keiki.
ARTWORK BRIGHTENS IMAGING WAITING ROOM
Mahalo to Delta Airlines and its employees who painted an “Iris” mural for our Imaging Waiting Room. We have received many compliments from our patients and staff and truly appreciate the time and care that was put into painting this special piece. This mural is part of the art program developed by The Foundation for Hospital Art. Since 1984 The Foundation for Hospital Art has improved areas where patients and medical staff are working under stress for long periods of time by providing colorful paintings, wall murals and ceiling tiles to hospitals across the country.

Dr. Tracy Dorheim, Dr. Barry Shitamoto, Tony Takitani Esq., and Russell Yamane, CPA.
The Kiwanis Club of Kahului held their 2nd Annual Golf Tournament on September 27, benefiting the Pediatric Department at MMMC. Proceeds from the first tournament allowed us to purchase Bili-Light Photo-therapy blankets, used to treat jaundice in newborns. This year, proceeds were used to purchase sleeper chairs, which will allow parents to stay overnight in the hospital room with their child-
helping to reduce fears and provide comfort 24 hours a day. Our heartfelt mahalo goes out to all our golfers, volunteers, prize donors and sponsors including: Carlsmith Ball LLP Maui, In Memory of Martin Luna; Central Pacific BankBusiness Banking; First Hawaiian Bank; Goodfellow Brothers Inc.; Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company; and VIP Foodservice.
UNITED AIRLINES “BEN FLYIN” TEDDY FOR KIDS
On November 12, our 4th Annual “Evening at Spago,” was once again generously hosted by Spago Maui and the Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group. Guests enjoyed Spicy Fragrant Thai Herb Onaga Sashimi, Indian Style Monchong, Grilled London Broil Steak and much more. Former patient Lori Cabacungan shared the touching story of how MMMC doctors saved her life after she suffered a heart attack. And the addition of a live auction and Fund-A-Need Program helped to raise an astounding $126,000! These funds were used immediately to purchase much-needed equipment for the OR Department. Mahalo to all our guests and table sponsors, and to Spago Maui General Manager Michael Schwarz and Chef de Cuisine Cameron Lewark for creating an unforgettable evening that raised such an incredible amount in support of our hospital.
KIWANIS & KEY CLUBS PARTNERSHIP
United Airlines employees donated dozens of their “Ben Flyin” Teddy Bear (who even comes with his own passport!) for our pediatric patients. These will help to bring comfort to our keiki when they are faced with an Emergency Room visit or
hospital stay. Our MMMC staffers are delighted to be able to give something special to children who need it most. Mahalo to United Airlines and their employees for this thoughtful donation.
Throughout the year, Kiwanis Club of Kahului members and Key Club students from Baldwin High School, Maui High School, and King Kekaulike High School help the Foundation with various mailing projects. These lively volunteers label, stuff and seal thousands of solicitation letters, helping the Foundation to garner more community support. We couldn’t do it without them!

FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS
EQUIPMENT PURCHASES Each year MMMC Foundation works to purchase much-needed equipment to help our hospital provide the highest quality of care for you and everyone in Maui County. With the rapid pace of changes in medical technology, the Foundation works hard to help MMMC keep up with state-of-the-art equipment. Here are some equipment purchases that the Foundation made in 2014.

ULTRASOUND MACHINES The Foundation purchased two Sonosite ultrasound machines - one for the ICU and one for the Anesthesiology Department. The number of cases that require ultrasounds has dramatically increased in both departments. Ultrasounds are used as a visual tool to help find veins, confirm a diagnosis, guide a needle or look at tissue. For Anesthesiologists, ultrasounds are specifically used to help spread anesthetic locally around nerves, and to help push a needle to a target very accurately. In the ICU, the machine is often used to look at heart motion, determine kidney function, to see if a patient has a collapsed lung, and many other applications.
SLEEPER CHAIRS The OB Department, Hale East and Hale South received a total of eight new sleeper chairs. The chairs are a welcome comfort for family members needing to stay overnight with their hospitalized loved one. Especially if the patient is a child, the chairs allow parents to stay with their keiki in their room as much as possible. The chairs also allow expectant fathers to get some rest while waiting for the arrival of their new bundle of joy! Funds were provided by the Kiwanis Club of Kahului Golf Tournament and the Medical Staff Holiday Party.
YOUNG PHILANTHROPISTS
KIDS OF MMMC STAFFERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE James and Ava Notarangelo (whose mom Teresa works in the Nutrition Services Department) donated over 50 children’s books to be used for our pediatric patients needing care here at MMMC. Each book helps make a keiki’s hospital stay a little less scary and a little less lonely.
PAY IT FORWARD On April 17, Samantha Barth (whose mom Marian is the Assistant Director of Nursing) celebrated her Sweet Sixteen Birthday party but rather than accept gifts from family and friends, she asked instead that they make a gift to the MMMC Foundation to be designated to our Pediatrics Department. Celebrating a birthday is important, but celebrating without presents in order to help other children who are hospitalized is empowering! Mahalo to our young philanthropists! We hope their generosity will inspire more young people to give back to their community.
HILTON & MARIA ACACIO UNEMORI SCHOLARSHIP FUND Thanks to a generous gift from Hilton and Maria Acacio Unemori, 30 MMMC nurses were able attend a valuable health care conference presented on Maui. The two-day workshop focused on the latest information for treating infectious disease and diabetes. Most of these nurses would not have been able to attend without assistance from the Unemori scholarship. Mahalo Hilton and Maria for this thoughtful and impactful gift!
BREAST CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM MMMC Foundation sponsors a breast cancer screening program which funds mammograms and ultrasounds for Maui women who would otherwise not be able to afford these life-saving tests. We partner with the Malama I Ke Ola Health Center to obtain referrals of women who are in need of this service. Since 2005, our program has helped over 614 women at a cost of $183,000. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Hawaii with approximately 860 cases of female invasive breast cancer diagnosed in the state each year. Mahalo to the following generous contributors to our breast cancer screening program.
SUSAN G. KOMEN FOUNDATION Nancy Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became the Susan G. Komen Foundation and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen has invested more than $2.5 billion to fulfill the promise, working to end breast
BETTY’S BEACH CAFÉ 2014 marked the fifth year that Betty’s Beach Café in Lahaina has sponsored a breast cancer fundraiser for the MMMC Foundation. Since their fundraiser began, Betty’s has donated nearly $17,000 for MMMC Foundation’s Breast Cancer Screening Program. During the entire month of October, Betty’s has food and beverage specials and a portion of those proceeds are earmarked for the MMMC Foundation. Mahalo Betty’s Beach Café for your loyal support!

HOSPITAL HIGHLIGHTS
MAUI MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER: 2014 HIGHLIGHTS
2014 was a challenging year for Maui Memorial Medical Center in the face of budget shortfalls and required new initiatives such as Electronic Medical Records. But through it all, our staff remained dedicated to providing our community with high quality healthcare. Following are some highlights that illustrate MMMC’s resilience and commitment to excellence.
STATE-OF-THE-ART MRI & CT SCANNERS
DIALYSIS UNIT EXPANSION
The State of Hawaii funded new state-of-the-art MRI and CT Scanners through CIP funds and the Trauma Special Fund. A CT (computed tomography) scan is a procedure that produces multiple cross-sectional images of the inside of the body, and the MRI machine uses magnetic resonance technology to produce different and complementary images of organs and other structures. The new CT scanner can produce up to 640 “slices,” or images, taken from different angles, compared to MMMC’s previous 16-slice machine. It is especially helpful in capturing accurate images of a patient’s whole heart including arteries, valves and degrees of calcification. The new machine is faster and also delivers a significantly lower radiation dose. The new MRI machine has imaging capabilities twice as high as MMMC’s previous MRI, and is second-tonone in producing images of the brain, spine and musculoskeletal system. State CIP funds and a USDA loan also provided for a new stand-alone building to house the equipment, adjacent to the Emergency Room.
10
Dr. L. Harrison Hassell-Nephrologist, Ruby Matsui, RPN - Dialysis Nurse Manager
MMMC opened its new in-house Dialysis Unit, which expanded services for patients and our community. The hospital first began offering renal dialysis services in 2002 for MMMC patients who required dialysis treatment during their stay at the hospital. The unit was quickly utilized and expanded, although it moved to various locations throughout the hospital due to space limitations. The new Dialysis Unit can serve up to nine patients at a time all inside the same unit.
ELECTRONIC MEDICAL
Electronic Medical Records (EMR) is
a software database application designed to organize and improve patient health information. Each phase of the patient encounter can be duplicated by the EMR system - increasing efficiency and productivity.
AWARDS FOR
MMMC received the Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. This marks the 5th year that MMMC has been recognized with a quality achievement award for stroke care. MMMC also received a Stroke Target Level Award. The Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award was also awarded to MMMC for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Foundation for heart failure patients. This marks the 6th year that MMMC has been recognized with a quality achievement award for heart failure. MMMC earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure patients.
HOSPITAL HIGHLIGHTS
RECORDS (EMR)
OUTPATIENT CLINIC AT MAUI LANI
The MMMC EMR Project went live in March of 2014. The system transitioned the hospital from paper-based record keeping to electronic record keeping. The project was enormous, affecting all hospital departments, staff and physicians who had to learn an entire new way of working. As part of the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) transition to EMR, the project connects patient information across all facilities within HHSC.
EMR benefits include:
• Reduced Expenses • Reduced Medical Errors • Improved Quality of Care • Improved Documentation and Accuracy • Better Access to Medical Information • Enhanced Security • Saves Time
EXCELLENCE
MMMC was recognized as a 2013 “Top Performer on Key Quality Measures” by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in the United States. MMMC was recognized as part of The Joint Commission’s 2014 annual report “America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety,” for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance for: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. MMMC is one of 1,224 hospitals in the United States to achieve the 2013 Top Performer distinction. The Hawaii Health Information Consortium awarded MMMC with a Mission Lifeline Award for the lowest readmission rates in Hawaii for Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack) and Pneumonia.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR TREASURER “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give” - Winston Churchill . . . and give you have. I am pleased to report that the MMMC Foundation raised nearly $490,000 in fundraising dollars in 2014. Thanks to this generous support, your Foundation enjoyed another strong financial year and allowed the Foundation Board to approve and fund hundreds of thousands of dollars in hospital grants. These grants supported Maui Memorial Medical Center with much needed equipment, staff training and community outreach. Without your charitable financial support, none of this would be possible. More importantly, because you cared, so many lives were touched across our community. Thank you so much for your support of the Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation and for making a real difference in the lives of countless patients, their families and our island community.

ONE HUNDRED DONATIONS: IT ADDS UP!
M
MMC Foundation recently received Layne Oishi’s 100th donation! Layne has been loyally donating to the Foundation every month since 2006. When asked why he chose to donate to the MMMC Foundation, Layne said “I wanted to donate to the hospital because it could potentially benefit everyone - it is the only hospital we have and it is open to anyone who needs medical help. By making a monthly donation I felt I could make a bigger impact over time - rather than just giving one donation a year. This type of contribution is very easy to do by just having an automatic monthly cash withdrawal or credit card charge - it makes giving more manageable because you can give a smaller amount every month to reach your full donation goal over time.” Recurring monthly gifts are a convenient and easy way to support the MMMC Foundation. Making a recurring gift allows donors to build a very significant contribution through smaller installments. Mahalo Layne for your investment in our hospital.

MAHALO TO OUR GENEROUS DONORS
A CAMPAIGN CELEBRATION
O
n April 25, 2014, former
Foundation Vice President Sandra Florence coordinated a “Finish Party” at the home of Dorothy McCoy, to celebrate the completion of our S.E.E.D. Capital Campaign. The S.E.E.D. (Space, Equipment, Education, and Delivery of Healthcare Services) Campaign raised $2 million to support MMMC’s cardiovascular program. Sandra helped fundraise our final $50,000, and donors celebrated in style thanks to Dorothy’s gracious hosting. Mahalo to the many, many contributors to our S.E.E.D. Campaign - first class cardiovascular care is now available on Maui thanks to you. Mahalo Sandra and Dorothy, for giving this amazing accomplishment the recognition it deserves!
It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things. Leonardo da Vinci 16

“ I wish to thank your hospital and medical staff for saving my life. Jim St. James
O
n December 15, Jim had a heart attack while windsurfing, and quick communication between Kaiser and MMMC’s Emergency Room got him to treatment immediately. Within just a few hours, doctors had performed successful triple bypass surgery on his heart. Dr. Colin Lee, Dr. Tracy Dorheim, and MMMC’s medical team including PA-C George Lam, were integral in this success. “I am sure I would have not survived the flight to Oahu for treatment. I had a terrific team work on me from the surgeons to all the nursing staff. The MMMC doctors are the best, the nurses are exceptional and caring, and all the workers in the Emergency Room show healing energy. I am also very thankful for Dr. Dang and his great positive attitude; Andria, Robin, Julian and Joan for attending to my needs with great care; Tatiana who helped my wife care for me while my anesthesia wore off; and for Lisa who massaged my swollen feet.” Once Jim was discharged from the hospital he went on to participate in MMMC’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program stating “The hospital has a first class cardiac rehabilitation program that greatly aided in my recovery and I am sure it is a tremendous help to many others. Kimberly Finney RN, BSN, Rehab Specialist made me feel comfortable and confident. She showed me how to build up my strength while being monitored every second of the session. She and other attending nurses gave important feedback, explained what stretches are helpful to do at home, and answered the many physical and emotional questions that cardiac patients like me are likely to ask.” We are very happy to say that Jim is making a fantastic recovery and recently started windsurfing again!

OUTSTANDING
n the early morning hours of Sunday, October 5th, my wife, Ginny, woke me complaining that she didn’t feel well and that her heart was racing. We were advised to take her to Maui Memorial Medical Center without delay. We arrived at MMMC around 3:30 am in the ER, her condition was diagnosed as AFib. We received excellent treatment in the ER, however, despite their valiant efforts to shock her heart back into normal rhythm she stayed

Here are some health tips from Maui Memorial Medical Center physicians to help you boost vitality in your day to day life. DR. DAVID ENGLE: MMMC NEUROSURGEON 1. Smoking, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are not only bad for general health, they also contribute to spine degenerative disease. 2. Avoid spinal trauma and severe brain injury – always buckle your seatbelt and drive safely. Never ride in the open bed of a pickup truck. 3. If you ride a motorcycle, moped or bicycle, always wear a helmet to decrease your risk of brain injury.
DR. DON HILL: MMMC ONCOLOGIST 1. Maintain an ideal body weight. Countries outside of our industrialized society have lower obesity rates, along with lower cancer rates. 2. Don’t smoke. One of the most preventable cancers is lung cancer. If you do smoke – quit. 3.When out in the sun, always use the highest SPF sunscreen and wear a broad rim hat. Reapply sunscreen after going in the water or perspiring. Tanning booths are also dangerous – avoid them!
DR. RORY O’CONNOR: MMMC GASTROENTEROLOGIST
1. Eat a diet high in fiber – it’s the right octane for your intestines. 2. Prevent colon cancer – get your colon screening. Do it for yourself, and those you love.
Mahalo to our volunteers for helping at the 2nd Annual Golf Tournament hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Kahului.

3. Smoking messes with you intestines, too! It’s like pouring MiracleGro on polyps and cancer.
