ake in the sights and splendour of the Maidstone stretch of the Medway from the comfort of the Kentish Lady River Boat. And you can combine your trip with a guided tour of medieval Allington Castle, too – possibly Kent’s best kept secret with its beautiful gardens, courtyards and Great Hall.
ONE-HOUR TRIPS The Kentish Lady runs one-hour return trips (or one way) from Maidstone Town Centre to Allington Lock at weekends and during school holidays between Easter and October. Maidstone is ideal for an afternoon shopping trip at The Mall or Fremlin Walk. And at Allington Lock you can stop for lunch at the Malta Inn restaurant, or spend time at Kent Life. You can also ask to stop at Whatman Park. A commentary tells you all about the sights you will see, including Corpus Christi Hall and Maidstone’s oldest pub, dating back to 1636.
THREE-HOUR LUNCH/SUPPER CRUISES Three-hour weekday cruises to Teston via Farleigh Lock include a picnic box or fish and chips, plus fresh fruit, tea, coffee or water.
PRIVATE HIRE The Kentish Lady is available for functions, including wedding receptions, birthdays or Champagne gatherings. A licensed bar, DJ and buffet are available at an additional cost.

THE HISTORIC MONKS GRANARY Monks Granary was originally constructed to serve as a large warehouse for used timbers salvaged from the refectory of Faversham Abbey, which was built by King Stephen and his wife Queen Matilda in 1148, and was also thought to be their burial place. The abbey was torn down as part of King Henry VIII’s plans to sweep the monasteries from England, and today Monks Granary is one of the oldest surviving warehouses in Britain.
JUST ABOVE THE TEA ROOM IS ALADDIN’S LOFT INDOOR MARKET – THE NAME SPEAKS FOR ITSELF… Aladdin’s Loft is definitely worth a browse, as it has 22 different retailers selling antiques and collectibles – perfect if you are looking for something unusual or ‘not on the high street’. Independent traders selling their wares and collectibles.
THE SECRET GARDEN & TEA ROOM Don’t miss a visit to the lovely garden to admire its many speciality plants and shrubs, as well as the large selection of glazed and terracotta pots. You will also be made very welcome at the Standard Quay Tea Room, which serves delicious home-made food, so you can treat yourself to a snack, meal, or maybe a piece of home-made cake – all created on the premises. In the summer, you can enjoy refreshments in the Secret Garden.

It was founded in 604, and the earliest parts of the current building date from the 1080s, when the French monk Gundulf commenced work on a new church and an imposing castle standing opposite. Welcome to a little slice of Beartopia
he Bears shop in Tankerton, near Whitstable, sells an array of individual gifts for all ages, including the worldfamous Steiff collection, beautifully handcrafted Charlie Bears, and a wide variety of teddy bears for all ages. It also serves beautiful cakes and pastries alongside a menu of light lunches, homemade soups, freshly-made sandwiches and 14 varieties of indulgent ice creams and delicious desserts, creating an outpost feel from the early 1900s. As you move through the shop passing bears and gifts galore, you arrive at the Den, a light and airy room with more unique gift ideas, seating, and a surprise interior (don’t wake the bears!) leading on to the tranquil south-facing Gar-Den. Owners Darren and Peter Simpson took their inspiration for the shop from the old frontier trading posts of the Wild West and, of course, their love of bears, following a visit to America’s Yosemite National Park in 2016. Your dogs are also welcome.

IGHTHAM MOTE
‘The most complete small medieval manor house in the country’ – historian John Newman
H
idden away in a secluded Kent valley at Ivy Hatch, near Sevenoaks, is Ightham’s perfectly preserved medieval moated manor house, featuring 14 acres of gardens, lakes, natural springs, secret glades and a house full of stories and character. Built nearly 700 years ago, Ightham Mote has seen many changes, and the estate has been owned by medieval knights, courtiers to Henry VIII and high society Victorians. Acquired by the National Trust in 1985, it was restored in a 20-year conservation project featured on TV. Visitor highlights include the picturesque courtyard, Great Hall, the Tudor painted ceiling of the New Chapel, the Grade I-listed dog kennel and the private apartments of former owner Charles Henry Robinson. Exploring the house allows you to find out about the stories of the past families that lived there and how they influenced the house you see today. Not to mention enjoying its picture-perfect setting, surrounded by flowing water like something out of a dream or fairy tale.

SMARDEN
THE BIG CAT SANCTUARY
‘Protection is our passion’ Providing a future for some of the most beautiful and endangered cats on the planet ABOUT THE CAUSE The Big Cat Sanctuary is home to more than 50 cats spanning 15 different species. Based in Smarden, and headed by big cat specialist and BBC presenter Giles Clark, the site is a sanctuary and breeding centre of excellence that takes a personal approach to the care of their resident cats. The aim is to contribute to global breeding programmes, helping to maintain genetic diversity in a captive population, with the ultimate aim of reintroducing the animals to their counterparts in the wild. The sanctuary also supports other conservation initiatives in the UK and all around the world.
THE MISSION Across the planet, 80 per cent of all big cats are endangered – so effective conservation efforts are essential in maintaining a healthy ecosystem in which these predators play such a vital role. The sanctuary’s four pillars of ethos – welfare, breeding, conservation and education – together with the dedication of the sanctuary’s team of staff and volunteers help to make a difference.
BIG CAT EXPERIENCES There are opportunities to visit these amazing animals in Kent. The sanctuary offers personal big cat experiences, including: Overnight Big Cat Safaris, which allow you to get up

T
his unique line was built by the Lloyd family in 1905 to transport materials for the manufacture of paper and finished products between the River Swale and their paper mills at Sittingbourne and Kemsley. The 2ft 6in gauge line continues to use the steam engines and rolling stock that were supplied to operate the railway in its working life, prior to its preservation in 1969. From 30 March 2019, trains will depart hourly from 1-4pm on Sundays from Sittingbourne Viaduct, which is within Sittingbourne Retail Park and has free parking (satnav ME10 2XD).
The journey takes 15 minutes, so a round trip can take less than an hour. However, at least two hours are recommended for the visit.
HISTORY OF THE LINE The Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway is the preserved southern half of the former Bowaters Railway. Newspaper magnate Edward Lloyd built Sittingbourne Mill in 1867 to supply his empire with paper. The railway was originally a horsedrawn tramway. In 1905, the first steam traction arrived, and by the system’s heyday there were 14 steam locomotives. The mill relied on raw materials being brought in by barge from Milton Creek, then, after the end of the First World War, the new Ridham Dock and Tramway. This included a viaduct over half a mile long that is still in use today.

WALMER CASTLE
as part of a chain of coastal artillery defences
A charming Tudor castle by the sea with wonderful, newly-restored grounds – perfect for strolls in spring and summer
O
riginally a Tudor fortress, Deal’s Walmer Castle has evolved into a home for many famous names over the years, from the Duke of Wellington to The Queen Mother. The majestic sea views and idyllic gardens make Walmer a beautiful place to spend a summer’s day. This year, go beyond the formal gardens and grand herbaceous borders to explore the new woodland walk, the wild flower meadow and the recently-restored sunken glen garden. Inside the castle, you can explore the story of Wellington’s life, career and death, and even see the original wellington boots. And pick up a multimedia guide to hear previously untold stories of the castle and its residents. There’s also a new natural play trail to entertain little adventurers – they’ll love exploring hollow tree trunks and hiding in giant nests.

P
lans are at an advanced stage for the hangar to commemorate the 75th anniversary of 1944’s 6 June D-Day in fine style by flying a Spitfire over the Normandy beaches. This will be Spitfire T.9 MJ772, which flew with No. 341 (Alsace) Squadron of the Free French Air Force, who on D-Day were operating out of RAF Merston in Sussex. Spitfire 772 flew an early morning sortie with Sergeant Habib as pilot, who reported seeing an FW190 enemy aircraft which disappeared into cloud when chased. Encountering intense flak north of Caen, the squadron fired on some German lorries and landed back on at 11:00hrs. Now converted to a two-seater, Spitfire 772 will be going back to the beaches for the 6 June commemorations, when it is scheduled to act as an escort to 35 Dakotas that are flying from Duxford to Caen on 5 June. In the back seat will be a veteran from 1944 who will pay the ultimate tribute to those allied troops who landed on the Normandy beaches but did not return to their countries. You, too, can fly in this Spitfire, or in MJ672 pictured here, and experience the thrill of a lifetime flying from the iconic Battle of Britain airfield at Biggin Hill.
‘RED NOSE DAY’
Naturally, the hangar had to do their bit for this year’s Comic Relief – in a way never seen before!

C
hiddingstone was the Tudor home of the Streatfeild family. In the 19th century the house was remodelled in the style of a castle. Decades later, it was the same dream of living in a castle that inspired art collector Denys Eyre Bower to move in. Highlights of the fascinating Bower collections are on display throughout the castle, which was his home from 1955 to 1977. Bower collected Ancient Egyptian, Japanese, Buddhist and Stuart and Jacobite artefacts, as well as books. Visit his study to learn more about his dramatic life. Sitting in 35-acre grounds, the castle has far-reaching views. Explore an Ancient Egyptian-inspired grass maze, an avenue of Japanese cherry blossom trees, a Victorian Orangery, and the lake – which can be fished all year round. Sit in the sheltered courtyard and enjoy a light lunch or cream tea served on vintage china. Visitors (and dogs) may access the Tea Room without having to pay admission to the castle. The Gift Shop in the old well tower sells local produce, gifts, antiques and second-hand books.
