CHATHAM BEST FOR SNOWSPORTS
ho can resist heading out and about in the autumn, arguably the most stunning time of the year, with trees awash with rich bronze colours glinting in the sun surrounded by a sea of reds, yellows and greens? As our new Best Attractions Autumn and Winter edition shows, there are plenty of places to explore to enjoy the season in Kent, with its hop fields, vineyards, stately gardens, beautiful parks, glistening lakes, wildlife centres and woodland. The Garden of England will be positively glowing – especially with the harvest coming in. Even nighttime will bring autumnal awe, with the Harvest Moon, Halloween and Bonfire Night, and later comes the joy of a winter wonderland, too, with sites laying on seasonal spectaculars. If you love wildlife, then – like Doctor Dolittle – we bring you plenty of chances to ‘talk to the animals’, from endangered species such as porcupines and very big cats to furry friends on the farm. If adventure is your thing, then swing through the trees, take a helicopter ride, cycle round a reservoir, or even go skiing. There is so much to see indoors, too, from castles, cathedrals and stately homes to vintage toys, marvellous museums and curious cafés. With the country’s wartime heroics remaining fresh in our minds, you can also visit Battle of Britain heritage sites boasting Spitfires, Hurricanes and more at the historic Kent airfields they flew from. So peek inside our glorious guide to find all the information you need to plan all those autumn and winter outings, including a map to pinpoint them. You will find a host of updates your favourite attractions as well as exciting new places you never knew existed. And when you visit, do tell them MMM sent you!

THE HISTORIC MONKS GRANARY Monks Granary was originally constructed to serve as a large warehouse for used timbers salvaged from the refectory of Faversham Abbey, which was built by King Stephen and his wife Queen Matilda in 1148, and was also thought to be their burial place. The abbey was torn down as part of King Henry VIII’s plans to sweep the monasteries from England, and today Monks Granary is one of the oldest surviving warehouses in Britain.
JUST ABOVE THE TEA ROOM IS ALADDIN’S LOFT INDOOR MARKET – THE NAME SPEAKS FOR ITSELF… Aladdin’s Loft is definitely worth a browse, as it has 22 different retailers selling antiques and collectibles – perfect if you are looking for something unusual or ‘not on the high street’. Independent traders selling their wares and collectibles.
THE SECRET GARDEN & TEA ROOM Don’t miss a visit to the lovely garden to admire its many speciality plants and shrubs, as well as the large selection of glazed and terracotta pots. You will also be made very welcome at the Standard Quay Tea Room, which serves delicious home-made food, so you can treat yourself to a snack, meal, or maybe a piece of home-made cake – all created on the premises. In the summer, you can enjoy refreshments in the Secret Garden.

AF Biggin Hill was a vital fighter station during the Battle of Britain and for the rest of the war. The motto ‘The Strongest Link’ proved very apt as the Hurricanes and Spitfires fought off an enemy intent upon invading the country. When the RAF left in 1961, many thought that Spitfires would fly no more from that hallowed turf. Today, however, they are back in the form of the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar and the Fly A Spitfire service. A recent ruling by the CAA now allows the public to experience just what those young airmen would have experienced, by flying in the back seat of one of the three converted Spitfires. All three have a wartime history, with one shooting down an Me109 over Arnhem in September 1944; another flying over the beaches on D-Day, 6 June, 1944; and the third being the prototype two-seater Spitfire converted by Vickers for the Irish Air Corps in 1943. In addition, there is a hangar tour lasting one and a half hours, and you can sit in a Spitfire, the next best thrill to flying in one. So come and fly with the UK’s largest Spitfire flight operator.

ABOUT THE CAUSE The Big Cat Sanctuary is home to more than 50 cats spanning 15 different species. Based in Smarden, the site is a Sanctuary and breeding centre of excellence that takes a personal approach to the care of their resident cats. The aim is to contribute to global breeding programmes, helping to maintain genetic diversity in a captive population, with the ultimate aim of reintroducing the animals to their counterparts in the wild. The Sanctuary also supports other conservation initiatives in the UK and all around the world.
A cute cub – just purrfect…
THE MISSION
THE EYES HAVE IT… Puna the Sumatran Tiger
Across the planet, 80 per cent of all big cats are endangered, so effective conservation efforts are essential in maintaining a healthy ecosystem in which these predators play such a vital role. The Sanctuary’s four pillars of ethos are: Welfare, Breeding, Education and Conservation. They strive to provide the best possible lives in captivity for all their resident cats, stimulating them both mentally and physically, and keeping them both happy and healthy.
BIG CAT EXPERIENCES There are opportunities to visit these amazing animals in Kent. The Sanctuary offers personal big cat experiences, including Overnight Big Cat Safaris, which allow you to get up close and personal with some of the world’s most endangered and iconic cats. These also include afternoon tea, a three-course evening meal and full English breakfast – all served in the conservatory area overlooking the Sanctuary’s majestic African lion brothers as they sleep and roar the time away.

THE NEW ARRIVALS In April, the Sanctuary’s Snow leopards became parents when Laila gave birth to two male cubs. Laila has been a sensational mum and Yarko has been an attentive dad, keeping a watchful eye over his family. The Big Cat Sanctuary are proud to be donating 15% of funds raised for them directly to The Snow Leopard Trust to support frontline conservation. H
idden away in a secluded Kent valley at Ivy Hatch, near Sevenoaks, is Ightham’s perfectly preserved medieval moated manor house, featuring 14 acres of gardens, lakes, natural springs, secret glades and a house full of stories and character. Built nearly 700 years ago, Ightham Mote has seen many changes, and the estate has been owned by medieval knights, courtiers to Henry VIII and high society Victorians. Acquired by the National Trust in 1985, it was restored in a 20-year conservation project featured on TV. Visitor highlights include the picturesque courtyard, Great Hall, the Tudor painted ceiling of the New Chapel, the Grade I-listed dog kennel and the private apartments of former owner Charles Henry Robinson. Exploring the house allows you to find out about the stories of the past families that lived there and how they influenced the house you see today. BEST FOR TOY FANS At The start of 2019 the Hornby Visitor Centre was refurbished. Its layouts received new scenery to improve the look of the displays and more enjoyment for visitors. The layout of the Museum was changed, providing a clear path so people can see all that the Visitor Centre has to offer. Since refurbishment, some of the display windows have also been updated, including new and upcoming releases. So why not give the 2019 Visitor Centre Quiz a go? One of the main new additions is a ‘How it’s Made Area’ which walks you through the production and shipping stages of making the products. This begins with the first stage, explaining how the team at Hornby Hobbies research real vehicles so the designers can look into CAD designing them. After the computer design has been created, it is then 3D printed to see how the product looks. See the real machines and tools that were used when products were made at the Margate site. And enjoy a quick explanation of the Hornby production line and assembly, with a video showing how products travel from China all the way to Hornby Hobbies shelves. The refurbishment gives you an experience that is not only more fun but also educational – great for birthday parties, school groups and general visits.
