WESTERHAM
ho can resist the joys spring and summer in our busy and beautiful county? The number of exciting and increasingly imaginative attractions grows every year, as we reflect here, in the biggest edition of Kent Best Attractions we have ever produced! The fun and fertile ‘Garden of England’ blooms with the best of everything, so you will love flipping through the colourful and informative pages inside, detailing what to see and where, as we welcome you to Kent’s top delights for spring and summer 2020. Among the wealth of attractions are the captivating Big Cats at Smarden as well as a host of other wildlife, sea and river cruises, big and little railways, helicopter rides high above the stunning scenery, sailing, skiing, canoeing, rock climbing, glamping and historic toys. Anniversaries always inspire special shows, events and exhibitions, and this year’s include Hever Castle joining the huge VE Day 75 celebrations, Leeds Castle marking the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII travelling through Kent with an amazing 5,000 courtiers; Ightham Mote’s 700th year, and, most importantly for our front-line county in WWII, the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain – a great reason to visit the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar (and even fly a Spitfire!) as well as the Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge and the Spitfire & Hurricane Memorial Museum at Manston. And that’s not all inside. From a rich tapestry of castles and cathedrals to marvellous museums and the delights of the coast, Kent is bursting with yet more brilliant attractions, including massive events like the Kent County Show, plus shopping, theatres and historic estates. Not forgetting the intriguing Call the Midwife tour at Chatham Historic Dockyard. We literally have it all mapped overleaf! And when you enjoy and explore all the places in our guide, do tell them who sent you…

THE HISTORIC MONKS GRANARY Monks Granary was originally constructed to serve as a large warehouse for used timbers salvaged from the refectory of Faversham Abbey, which was built by King Stephen and his wife Queen Matilda in 1148, and was also thought to be their burial place. The abbey was torn down as part of King Henry VIII’s plans to sweep the monasteries from England, and today Monks Granary is one of the oldest surviving warehouses in Britain.
JUST ABOVE THE TEA ROOM IS ALADDIN’S LOFT INDOOR MARKET – THE NAME SPEAKS FOR ITSELF… Aladdin’s Loft is definitely worth a browse, as it has 22 different retailers selling antiques and collectibles. Full of independent traders, it’s perfect if you are looking for something unusual or ‘not on the high street’.
THE SECRET GARDEN & TEA ROOM Don’t miss a visit to the lovely garden to admire its many speciality plants and shrubs, as well as the large selection of glazed and terracotta pots. You will also be made very welcome at the Standard Quay Tea Room, which serves delicious home-made food, so you can treat yourself to a snack, meal, or maybe a piece of home-made cake – all created on the premises. BEST FOR TOY FANS At The start of 2019 the Hornby Visitor Centre was refurbished. Its layouts received new scenery to improve the look of the displays and more enjoyment for visitors. The layout of the Museum was changed, providing a clear path so people can see all that the Visitor Centre has to offer. Since refurbishment, some of the display windows have also been updated, including new and upcoming releases. So why not give the 2019 Visitor Centre Quiz a go? One of the main additions is a ‘How it’s Made Area’, which walks you through the production and shipping stages of making the products. This begins with the first stage, explaining how the team at Hornby Hobbies research real vehicles so the designers can look into CAD designing them. After the computer design has been created, it is then 3D printed to see how the product looks. See the real machines and tools that were used when products were made at the Margate site. And enjoy a quick explanation of the Hornby production line and assembly, with a video showing how products travel from China all the way to Hornby Hobbies shelves. The refurbishment gives you an experience that is not only more fun, but also educational – great for birthday parties, school groups and general visits.

THE BIG CAT SANCTUARY
“Protection is our passion” rovidin a future for some of the most eautiful and endan ered cats on the planet ABOUT THE CAUSE The Sanctuary is a breeding centre of excellence that takes a personal approach to the care of their resident cats. They have four pillars of ethos – WELFARE, BREEDING, EDUCATION AND CONSERVATION. The Sanctuary’s wonderful cats act as ambassador for their wild cousins, and the dedicated team endeavour to provide the best possible lives in captivity, giving stimulation, not just physically but mentally as well. Providing enrichments and tailoring of habitats is key to having happy and well rounded individuals. Another objective is the breeding, by contributing to the co-ordinated breeding programmes, we have helping to maintain genetic diversity with the captive population. The ultimate aim is to be equipped to supplement wild populations in the future, should it become viable. Educating people about these extraordinary felines is vital to conservation, protecting both wild cats and the ecosystems on which they depend. The Sanctuary is also proud to help fund frontline conservation strategies, in turn giving an understanding of the need for co-existence with our planet’s wildlife, the future does after all rely on the health of our entire ecosystems. The time to act is now before it’s too late.

You’ll then explore an area of outstanding natural beauty that can only be seen from the water, admiring the view of the wonderful old fishing villages, St Margaret’s Bay, Kingsdown, Walmer and the town of Deal. See castles and hear tales of smuggling, plus Deal boatmen and Goodwin Sands before passing underneath Deal Pier.

his unique line was built by the Lloyd family in 1905 to transport materials for the manufacture of paper and finished products between the River Swale and their paper mills at Sittingbourne and Kemsley. The 2ft 6in gauge line continues to use the steam engines and rolling stock that were supplied to operate the railway in its working life, prior to its preservation in 1969. Trains depart hourly 1-4pm every Sunday from Easter until the end of September from Sittingbourne Viaduct station, which is within Sittingbourne Retail Park and has free parking (Satnav ME10 2XD or The Wall). The journey takes 15 minutes, so a round trip can take less than an hour. However, at least two hours are recommended for the visit.
EVENTS The railway holds a number of events throughout the season, including Four Days of Steam over Easter weekend – with a free plant potting activity on Good Friday and Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday – and the End of Season Gala Weekend at the end of September. Other highlights this year include the return of Model Railway Day on 1 August and Wild West Weekend from 12-13 September. The popular Steam & Beer event is held on the first weekend in July, featuring live music with a 1960s/70s theme on Saturday and pirate fun with Captain Jack Sparrow on Sunday. For the kids there is Jack the Station Cat Weekend from 24-25 May, and Edward Bear’s Teddy Bears Picnic from 30-31 August.

mmetts Garden is an unhurried retreat that has much to offer. Celebrating some of the finest traditions of Edwardian garden design, you can picture it as a botanical stamp collection of rare and curious specimens that have been collected from across the globe. Spring sees a show of roughly 7,000 May-flowering tulips of red, pink and black that sit beneath cherry tree blossom. The garden also has over 130 species of rhododendron, and for those wanting something more curious, be on the lookout for the handkerchief and snowdrop trees with their dainty white displays. In summer, there’s a North Kent Roses Month celebration of the rose displays of Chartwell, Emmetts Garden and Quebec House. From 13 June to 19 July, you can enjoy a programme of talks and tours that feature the pastel pink roses of Emmetts’ only formal garden, the Italianate Rose Garden. estled in the heart of Kent, this English country cottage and Barn Theatre is a haven that once belonged to renowned Victorian actress Dame Ellen Terry, and exudes her artistic spirit as well as a bygone history of a shipyard and the sea before the waters receded. Now a museum of Ellen Terry’s life, Smallhythe Place houses hundreds of diverse artefacts from her personal and professional collections, including jewellery, handwritten letters, scripts and her famous costumes. With its ever-changing colours, the garden is a tranquil retreat capturing the romantic spirit of Smallhythe Place as it was during Ellen’s time here. Stroll through the grounds and discover the traditional rose garden, orchard, nuttery and ponds, all of which are home to an abundance of wildlife. The charming thatched 17th-century barn in the garden was transformed into a theatre by Ellen’s daughter, Edy Craig. Edy was a prolific theatre practitioner herself, and in 1929 – a year after her mother’s death – she opened the Barn Theatre with the intention of holding an annual performance to commemorate her mother’s life. The barn continues to host a diverse programme of plays, talks and exhibitions that take place throughout the year. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 4 March to1 November 2020.
