BEST FOR EVERYONE

Monks Granary was originally constructed to serve as a large warehouse for used timbers salvaged from the refectory of Faversham Abbey, which was built by King Stephen and his wife Queen Matilda in 1148, and was also thought to be their burial place. The abbey was torn down as part of King Henry VIII’s plans to sweep the monasteries from England, and today Monks Granary is one of the oldest surviving warehouses in Britain.

Aladdin’s Loft is definitely worth a browse, as it has 22 different retailers selling antiques and collectables – perfect if you are looking for something unusual or ‘not on the high street’.

Enjoy guided river trips on the upper Medway from Tonbridge to Yalding in both open canoes and kayaks. This is a really beautiful section of the river meandering through the Garden of England. It’s a very popular trip, and now has six canoe passes on it around the locks to add a little excitement.

A pleasure-filled reservoir in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty located in the heart of the High Weald

B

ewl is home to the largest stretch of inland water in the South East. Rustic woodland and scenic landscapes surround the water’s edge, and there is something for the whole family to enjoy. The host of activities available include walking or cycling around the reservoir to take in the impressive views. If you feel up to the challenge, you can make a day of it and tackle the whole 12.5-mile route – with lots of nature trails and an abundance of wildlife there is lots to explore. There is plenty to do out on the water, too, including sailing, fishing, pedalo hire (weather dependent) or, for a more relaxing experience, the Bewl Belle offers boat trips so you can sit back and take in the panoramic views.

Awash with activities!

Keep little ones entertained with mini golf or the adventure playground, fully equipped with plenty of fun climbing frames. There’s also the soft play area located by the Waterfront Café. For those who are a little older, make sure to book the Ultimate Laser Challenge, which guarantees an adrenaline-filled contest as you hide out and camouflage yourself throughout the dens and bunkers in the woods. After a day of fun, refuel in the café, which provides hot drinks, refreshments and cream teas – or for something a little more substantial, head to The Boat House Bistro. Perched on the water’s edge, it serves a weekly changing market menu, including trout from Bewl Water itself – the perfect way to finish a hearty walk!

BATTLE OF BRITAIN MUSEUM Visit the world’s largest collection of Battle of Britain memorabilia

T

he Kent Battle of Britain Museum Trust at Hawkinge, on the site of the original RFC and RAF Base, is the oldest and largest Battle of Britain Museum in the world. It was founded in 1966 by a group of like-minded individuals, led by Mike Llewellyn, MBE, who spent their weekends and spare time researching and recovering the crash sites of aircraft lost during the summer of 1940. Over the last 52 years, the museum has amassed a collection of recovered and souvenired items from over 700 aircraft lost during the battle, and each display is a personal insight and tribute to the pilot and/or airmen involved. The museum also displays aircraft, some

original and some replica. You can see Spitfires, Hurricanes, Messerschmitt Bf 109Es, Defiant, Harvard, Tiger Moth, Magister, Fokker Triplane and Gotha. Also, in December 2017, they acquired the substantial remains of a Bristol Blenheim Mk IV (Bollingbroke). The museum contains the most comprehensive collection of Battle of Britain uniforms, flying equipment and insignia, as worn by both sides of the conflict, as well as personal items donated by pilots, both Allied and German, who fought in the Battle of Britain. The museum is open from 30 March to 4 November, 10am to 4pm (June to September 10am to 5pm), Tuesdays to Sundays. It is closed Mondays, except Bank Holidays.

THE BIG CAT SANCTUARY ‘Protection is our passion’ Providing a future for some of the most beautiful and endangered cats on the planet ABOUT THE CAUSE

The Big Cat Sanctuary is home to more than 50 cats spanning 15 different species. Based in Smarden, and headed by big cat specialist and BBC presenter Giles Clark, the site is a sanctuary and breeding centre of excellence that takes a personal approach to the care of their resident cats. Their aim is to contribute to global breeding programmes, helping to maintain genetic diversity in a captive population, with the ultimate aim of reintroducing the animals to their counterparts in the wild. The sanctuary also supports other conservation initiatives in the UK and all around the world.

THE MISSION

The sanctuary has four pillars of ethos: Welfare, breeding, conservation and education. These objectives, and the dedication of The Big Cat Sanctuary’s team of staff and volunteers, helping them to make a difference. Across the planet, 80% of all big cats are endangered – so effective conservation efforts are essential in maintaining a healthy ecosystem in which these predators play such a vital role.

BIG CAT EXPERIENCES
