THERE is something delicious about November isn't there? The fireworks that kick it off and the mounting excitement at it ends, as we head towards December and all the festive season has to offer. Mind you, the supermarkets have certainly been sure to remind us of what lurks around the corner haven't they? I'm sure that the Christmas puddings and crackers started appearing on their shelves while most of my fellow shoppers were still in shorts and t-shirts! One of the highlights of recent weeks for me was an annual get together at Eastwell Manor, near Ashford. It is such a splendid building and great to catch up with so many friendly faces. We start to get into the mood for the season of goodwill with the first of our special Christmas features inside – the concluding part of which will be in next month's issue. Certainly one way to keep cosy during these dark chilly nights is watching some of the great TV shows the main networks start rolling out this time of year. And who can possibly avoid falling in love with Strictly Come Dancing? The glitz and glamour is like a warm glow emanating from our screens. Inside this issue we take a look at one of this year's celebrities – BBC newsreader Susanna Reid. She's managed to juggle a career and her family in a truly remarkable way. Elsewhere, we focus on Paddy McGuinness – once Peter Kay's sidekick and now a firmly established star in his own right. What's more, he's a regular sight in Maidstone as he shoots his hit game show, Take Me Out, at the town's increasingly popular studios. I recently braved the inclement weather to watch the last day of racing at Goodwood – always a fantastic way to spend a day. Inside this issue, we take a look at Kent's most celebrated race track, Brands Hatch, and some of the superstars who have graced the circuit. Its place in history is surely secured as one of the nation's finest sporting venues. Certainly it has seen some of the most thrilling races to really get the blood pumping. I'm sure you'll now be wanting to get stuck in and find your favourite articles. I hope you enjoy it.

VERY once in a while a genuine star emerges from the normally stuffy confines of news presenting. And it would be hard to deny that Susanna Reid hasn't joined those ranks – as a quick search on the internet will reveal. There are fan-made websites devoted to her, more photoshopped photographs than are healthy, and news stories aplenty about how her sometimes revealing outfits have caused the BBC switchboard to receive calls from delicate souls who have taken offence. When she was perceived to have enjoyed a 'flirty' interview with the lead singer of the Artic Monkeys, it caused an internet sensation trending on Twitter. Although she described it as “a lot of fuss over nothing”. What's more she became the latest newsreader to be catapulted into the mainstream media by accepting the challenge of appearing in the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing. It's a long way from the early morning shift she normally puts in as host of BBC Breakfast – but few will begrudge her the extra exposure. From her curvy figure – a far cry from the stick-thin women so often on our screens – she manages to be effortlessly professional while also warm and witty. In a world where youth seems essential to success, at 42 she continues to show that it takes more than youth to be a runaway success. Her CV is impressive too. From editing her university student newspaper – and getting it shortlisted for a major national
“One individual shopping centre, as individual as you are” Shopping Centre Royal Star Shopping Centre, High Street, Maidstone, Kent ME14 1JL 01622 690395 www.royalstarshopping.com
award – to making her way through the ranks of the fiercely competitive BBC, she even found time for a three-month trip to Sri Lanka to perform charity work. None of which takes into account she is a mother of three children. Today, as host of BBC Breakfast her day consists of a 400-mile round trip from the family home in London to the BBC's new studios in Salford Manchester three times aweek. “When they asked me to present with Bill Turnbull last year, my approach was just to see how it went. I didn't really plan this to happen, so I was quiet easy about it,” she explains. She presents the show, then catches the train back to London in time to pick up her children from school, take them home, make them tea, and tuck them up before leaping on a train and being back in Manchester in time for an overnight stay and preparation for the following morning's early shift start. “It's actually really manageable. The train journey gives me time to prepare for the programme and then ensure I can spend quality time with the children. “It would be a challenge if I was away all week. This way I see them everyday.“I don’t see my children when they wake up in the morning, three out of the seven days a week, but I pick them up every single day from school, make them tea every day and then on four days of the week I’m with them whenever they need me. “We thought of relocating an option but actually, rather than moving everybody, I can just go up and down”.
It's certainly a remarkable commitment to balancing work and family life – so often overlooked by the career-centred. Her three boys, Sam, 10, Finn, 9, and Jack, 7, are clearly the centre of her world. Along, of course, with their father – Dominic Cotton, a journalist who worked for many years within the BBC and most recently as communications director for a charity. But she admits it does raise eyebrows that they still haven't tied the knot. “My parents divorced when I was young and I think that left me with some commitment issues. But that changed when I met Dominic. “He's my best friend and we get on so well. He makes me laugh all the time. “People do get confused as I don't wear a ring and they assume I'm unattached. But it works for us and he understands why I don't want to get married. “The commitment and wanting a family unit for the children is our priority”.

“When they asked me to present with Bill Turnbull last year, my approach was just to see how it went. I didn't really plan this to happen, so I was quiet easy about it” Her parents separated and divorced when she was just nine. The youngest of three children, her father was a management consultant, her mother a nurse. “Because they divorced when I was little, it gave me an enormous opportunity to be with each of them separately,” Susanna is no strager to Kent as her father, Barry, lives in Westerham. "My brothers were older by then, which meant me and my Dad chatted about the world and current affairs, and I loved that. I have had an enhanced relationship with him and I think that is a fantastic opportunity for a young girl to have. My Mum is hugely important, too. She is very encouraging and still a big influence on me today." She was raised in Croydon and attended plush independent school Croham Hurst School – a school also attended by comedienne Sue Perkins.
She studied politics, philosophy and law at the University of Bristol and then took a postgraduate diploma in broadcast journalism in Cardiff. She then embarked on a career in the BBC – first at Radio Bristol, then on Radio 5 Live before making the leap on to TV and BBC News 24. Her big break came one night when a presenter due to appear at 11pm failed to show up – she got the nod and never looked back Squeezing in a three-month charity work stint in Sri Lanka, she became a presenter on the BBC News channel and eventually landed a regular role on BBC Breakfast – replacing Sian Williams since last year as the main anchor. She's also stood in for Andrew Marr when he suffered a stroke and he had to vacate the hot-seat of his popular Sunday morning current affairs show.

“I have a real problem with my memory. Facts, political analysis, I can remember everything. "Teach me dance movements and it is like another language.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, the prospect of her in revealing outfits ensured she was swiftly named one of the show's
early favourites. As she says: “Dancing makes you feel fantastic and you get to dress up and the outfits are beautiful. Just what’s not to love?” The nation's love affair with Susanna Reid shows no sign of slowing any time soon, it would seem. mmm

Cosmetic Surgery – Beauty From Afar?
18 mmm
We may choose to book our annual holidays from glossy brochures and the internet - but, how often have the pictures of spacious rooms with sea view balconies turned out to be misleading. If you’re booking a fortnight in Kenya for a safari and don’t end up with the accommodation the internet images promised, it probably won’t be the end of the world. If, however, you opt for a ‘cosmetic surgery safari’ and don’t end up with the result you hoped for, the affects won’t last for a fortnight – they may last for a lifetime. So what’s more important, your safety or a saving? The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) have confirmed that cosmetic surgery consultants have seen a rise in the demand for corrective surgery following problems with cosmetic surgery abroad. Overseas surgery can often be a false economy which may cost patients their health, as well as a lot more money than was initially budgeted. The NHS has seen an increase in the number of people asking for corrective surgery as a result of having cosmetic surgery abroad that has gone wrong. Obviously there will be good surgeons working abroad but it can be difficult to judge their qualifications, or gain access to aftercare, which is vital if there are complications. With cosmetic surgery becoming increasingly popular, foreign clinics are taking advantage by heavily targeting UK patients with cut-price ‘holiday surgery’ offers. Mr Martin Jones, Consultant Plastic Surgeon from Kent and West Sussex explains “It is extremely important that you investigate who is going to perform the surgery prior to agreeing to an operation. You should check their qualifications and make sure they are an accredited plastic surgeon on the specialist GMC register. You should also have a similar approach to the hospital or clinic in which the procedure will be performed. The problem with going abroad for cosmetic surgery is that some complications can happen once you have returned home and then often there is no come back or anyone available to sort out the situation. Sometimes the NHS picks up the bill and time

Kentish Cherry Brandy Christmas Cake Start baking now for a truly delicious Kentish Christmas Cake - the longer you leave it, the better it will taste! Serves: 12 Prep time: 30 mins to mix, plus 3 days for soaking the fruit Cooking time: approx 4 hrs INGREDIENTS • 150ml Kentish Cherry Brandy Liqueur • 350g (12oz) sultanas • 350g (12 oz) glace cherries, rinsed & dried • 500g (1lb 2oz) currants • 175g (6 oz) raisins • 75g (3oz) chopped blanched almonds • Finely grated zest of 2 oranges • 4 eggs • 175g (6oz) plain flour • 75g (3oz) self-raising flour • 250g (9oz) butter • 250g (9oz) light muscovado sugar • 1 tbsp black treacle • 1½ tsp mixed spices COOKING METHOD 1. Prepare the fruit and soak in brandy 3 days ahead - this is essential to add the Kentish Brandy flavor and plump up the fruit. Do this by putting all the dried fruit and orange zest into a container, pour the brandy over and stir. Cover the container and leave to soak for 3 days, stirring daily. 2. Preheat the oven to 140ºC/Fan 120ºC/ Gas Mark 1. 3. Grease and line a 23cm (9in) deep round tin with a double layer of greased greaseproof paper. 4. Measure the butter, sugar, eggs, treacle and almonds into a very large bowl and beat well. Add the flours and mixed spice. Mix thoroughly until fully blended. Stir in the soaked fruit. Spoon into the prepared cake tin. Level the surface of the mix. 5. Bake in the centre of the oven for 2 hours. If the cake is a perfect colour, cover with foil. 6. Cook for a further 2-2½ hours or until the cake is a rich golden brown and feels firm to the touch. Test by inserting a skewer into the centre of the cake, ensuring it comes out clean. Leave the cake to cool in the tin. 7. When cool, pierce the cake at intervals with a fine skewer. Feed with a little extra brandy. Wrap the completely cold cake in a double layer of greaseproof paper and again in foil and store in a cool place for up to 3 months, ensuring that you feed your cake at intervals with more brandy. (Do not remove the lining paper when storing - it helps to keep the cake moist!). DECORATING (OPTIONAL): Decorate if required a few days prior to eating with almond paste or marzipan and covered with royal icing. Kentish Cherry Brandy Liqueur is available at www.rentacherrytree.co.uk

PADDY McGuinness has become a rather regular face in the county. Courtesy of the continued success of the Maidstone Studios, he is a frequent visitor to host the hugely popular ITV show Take Me Out.
A
nd, what's more, he'll be back there again before the end of the year to shoot another series of the primetime dating game. But then Paddy is a busy man. From his presenting roles, he has carved out a role as one of the UK's most popular personalities, while for many he will forever be associated for his work with long time friend Peter Kay in such shows as Phoenix Nights and Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere. Not that he's allowed it to change his lifestyle. “My favourite date? Well my wife Christine and I love staying in and watching the TV with a Chinese takeaway.” Married in 2011, the couple celebrated becoming parents this summer when Christine gave birth to twins Leo and Penelope. A former Miss Liverpool, Christine is some 15 years younger than her 40-year-old husband, but the two clearly have ensured his busy schedule does not prevent them having a normal life. “I still have the same circle of friends and family around me and although I end up travelling around the country when I'm filming, I then come home and carry on with my life as normal. “It may be that I still love all the work I do because I don't get that immersed in it.
mmm 41
Home and work are separate things.” Which must sometimes be a tough task given his workload. Not only is his TV presenting role gathering pace, but he still regularly tours with his stand-up comedy routine, while there's also panto and comedy acting too for him to dip into. The two were introduced by mutual friends at a social event and soon hit it off. And it's clear Mrs McGuinness is far from just garnish to his celebrity lifestyle. “I could never have married a trophy wife,” he reflects, “it would drive me potty not to be able to have a conversation with my partner — or a laugh. Yes, she’s gorgeous but she’s also really good company and the least showy-offy girl you’ll ever meet.” Raised in Bolton, Paddy's upbringing was a little unorthodox. His mother, Pat, and father Joe never married or lived together, and he was raised by his mother and her two sisters. His mother's death in 2003, aged just 64, was a profound shock to Paddy and one he admits continues to haunt him. “I would have loved her to see my success so I could have spoilt her,” he admits. But it was to be his school days which would perhaps be the biggest influence on his life as one of his classmates was none other than Peter Kay. “We were good friends but very different. I loved my football while he would spend time at home watching films. He was a bit of a geek. “But we had the same sense of humour.” After they left school, Peter Kay swiftly set about seeking a career in comedy – Paddy, meanwhile, picked up a variety of jobs – among them a lifeguard at a local leisure centre. Not that it had stopped him dipping his toe into the same waters after Peter gave him a role in That Peter Kay Thing – a series of spoof documentaries which would spawn the characters that would form the backbone of the classic Phoenix Nights.

“Peter approached me when Phoenix Nights started to take off. He kept nagging me to quit my job so I could try to make a career in comedy. But I didn't have the confidence to take that step. I was scared of leaving my job in case things didn't work out. “I'd always been taught that the most important thing was to have a job that paid you sick pay and came with a pension. I was scared of trying to make it and then having to come back with my tail between my legs. “But Peter always had faith in me. He knew I could get laughs. I was funny at school, but I wasn’t the class clown. “It was frustrating for Peter because I could only arrange to be there for filming sessions in
between my shifts at the swimming baths. In the end he nagged me enough and I quit - which turned out to be a cracking move." His role as Paddy O'Shea, and the critical acclaim the series won, ensured Paddy McGuinness wouldn't need to worry about that swimming pool job again. The character proved so popular, there was a spin-off show featuring Paddy's character and his doorman sidekick, Peter Kay's Max Bygraves – Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere. Paddy's career was now in the topsy-turvy world of showbusiness. After building on his comedy reputation with his stand-up routines, it would be his personality which unlocked wider options – and that of presenting.
“Peter always had faith in me. He knew I could get laughs. I was funny at school, but I wasn’t the class clown”
After fronting shows for Sky One, by the end of 2006 he stood in for Paul O'Grady on his popular chat show. A succession of shows followed, with the like of Rory and Paddy's Great British Adventure, guestpresented This Morning and also hosted Hotel GB on Channel 4. But is a Channel 4 pilot which would eventually deliver him his biggest hit yet as a presenter. It was ITV that decided to pick up Take Me Out and turn it into a Saturday primetime show – the viewers loved it, it generated the headlines, and its popularity shows no sign of slowing. As it to underline its huge popularity, the show is currently on tour around the UK. The good news is, its home remains in Maidstone. mmm

Brands Hatch History
mmm 45
A
MID Kent's rich sports history there is almost no doubt that its most famous of venues is Brands Hatch. While the St Lawrence Cricket Ground in Canterbury would no doubt like to think it could argue a strong case as the historic home of Kent County Cricket Club, the reality is that Brands Hatch has played host to a who's who of motorsport's greatest over the decades. The West Kingsdown track has hosted the very biggest events on a global scale. From Formula One to British Superbikes, British Touring Cars to American Champ Car, it has even hosted action during the London 2012 Games when the Paralympic
cycling events took place on the circuit and surrounding roads. And the list of those who have performed on its famous race
circuit would go forever; but include the likes of Ayrton Senna, James Hunt, Damon Hill,
Jim Clark, Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, Barry Sheene, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell. All of which is a far cry from when cyclists in the 1920s first started using the tracks left in the natural amphitheatre left by local farmers. By the late 1920s cyclists and cross-country runners from London were making a trip down the A20 to use the circuit for training. Perhaps unsurprisingly, motorcyclists found the undulating tracks provided an entertaining venue for their purposes too. In 1932 a number of local clubs combined, to stage what many see as the first official meeting. The Second World War would see the fledgling circuit turned into an enormous car park for military vehicles as all races were stopped
to allow it to aid the war effort. It took a pounding too from German bombers. But by 1947, it was back in action as a race track and even managed to persuade the BBC to provide live coverage of races. Now with a national reputation, it was on the fast track to success. By 1950, it saw thousands of pounds worth of investment to turn it into a purpose built venue capable of staging both motorcycle and the increasingly popular car races. The first meeting, featuring Formula III, held that year attracted 7,000. Within three years, a remarkable 50,000 turned up to watch the Formula III season reach a dramatic climax. By 1960, permission was granted for Brands Hatch to double its track
– effectively creating a Grand Prix size circuit. In 1964 a deal was struck for the venue to alternate with Silverstone in hosting the British Grand Prix. It would elevate Brands to global status. For more than 20 years it hosted the UK's most prestigious race every other year. It started in dramatic fashion too, as the legendary Jim Clark beat off the challenges of Graham Hill – father of future champion Damon – and John Surtees. Surtees, famed for being the only world champion on both two and four wheels would become a regular visitor to the circuit – based in nearby Edenbridge – and would enjoy great success. He would also come to know great personal tragedy. His son, Henry
Surtees, hotly tipped as one of country's top talents, was killed in a freak accident in July 2009 aged just 18. Taking part in a Formula Two race the tyre of another competitor's car came off during a crash and bounced across the track. As it did so it collided with young Surtees who was struck full in the face. The injuries were so severe he would not recover and died. Sadly, one of many who have perished on a track which brings delight and despair. The Formula One circus would continue visiting the county – on some occasions making two visits in a season as it hosted both the British and European GP – until 1986 when it lost the right to host it to an exclusive deal for Silverstone.
The year before that final race the circuit had been taken over by computer millionaire John Foulston. His £5.2m deal secured him Brands, Oulton Park and Snetterton and he added Cadwell Park to form an impressive portfolio of UK race tracks. He too, however, would suffer at the track. A year after taking charge a mechanical fault saw him crash and killed at the track. He would be replaced by his daughter – the relatively inexperienced, and very young, Nicola Foulston. Within 10 years the circuit would change hands again – this time an ill-fated purchase by sports marketing giants Octagon. It, in turn, secured the right to host the F1 GP – but with Brands not suitable, it instead negotiated a
15-year deal for the race to be hosted at Silverstone – the current home of the show piece event. During this period Brands took advantage of Octagon's close relationship with the US openwheel CART racing to host the first ever UK race. Some 40,000 fans turned out to watch the event – but CART's domestic problems meant it was unable to make a regular visit. But before long Octagon – unable to make it work financially – would sell out too. It would be snapped up by Jonathan Palmer's Motorsport Vision group. He would guide Brands back to its rightful place as one of the UK's best-loved and most popular circuits, with a star-studded calendar of world and domestic racing. a
mmm 49
The A1 Grand Prix – which saw cars racing in the colours of various nations – made its global debut there, while British Superbikes made annual visits. Today, it may not have the Formula One Grand Prix, but it has regained its place in the heart of motorsports fans and ensured there are regular events, well marketed, to make it a
profitable business. Jonathan Palmer – a former F1 racer himself – has turned it into a major business combining races with track days and the increasingly popular track experiences, giving fans the chance to race on the very circuit all those legends did battle on. Little wonder it proves so popular. Brands Hatch has survived and prospered. Its future is now secure. Few would bet against it putting its foot down yet further and going from strength to strength. mmm

Cheesecake with Roasted Rum Pineapple and Pineapple Flowers
Ingredients: for the crust 1 cup graham cracker crumbs 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted 1 tablespoon sugar for the filling 3 8-ounce packages cream cheese, room temperature 1 cup sugar 1 vanilla bean (or 1 tsp good vanilla extract) 2 large eggs. 3/4 cup sour cream or creme fraiche for the topping 1 ripe pineapple, peeled, cut into 1/2 inch thicks rounds and cored
1 cup water 1/4 cup honey 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons rum for the flowers 1 pineapple Instructions: For the Crust: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Blend all ingredients in a 9" cheesecake pan and press the mixture over the bottom and about an inch up the sides.Bake until golden, about 12 minutes. Transfer to a rack and let cool. Carefully wrap outside of pan with 2 layers of heavy duty foil. Reduce oven temperature to 325 degrees.
For the Filling: Using an electric mixer, beat cream cheese in large bowl until fluffy. Gradually beat in sugar. Split vanilla bean down the middle with a sharp paring knife. Scrape in seeds from vanilla bean and blend 1 minute. Beat in eggs 1 at a time and then beat in sour cream. Transfer filling to crust. Place cheesecake in roasting pan. Add enough hot water to the roasting pan so that the water comes up the side of the cheesecake pan about 1 inch. Bake cheesecake for one hour. Turn off oven and let cake cool in closed oven for one hour. Remove from water bath and refrigerate, uncovered, until cold, at least 6 hours or overnight. For the Topping: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place pineapple rings on large rimmed baking sheet. Boil remaining ingredients in a small saucepan for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour syrup over pineapple. Roast pineapple 12 minutes. Turn rings over and roast until tender and syrup thickens, turning rings every 5 minutes, about 20 minutes longer.
Cool pineapple on sheet. Cut into small pieces or larger 1/3 inch cubes, whichever you prefer. Transfer pineapple and syrup to bowl. (Can be made 1 day ahead ) Drain pineapple, reserving syrup. Cover top of cheesecake with some pineapple; stir remainder back into syrup. Serve cake, passing remaining pineapple in syrup separately. For the Flowers: Preheat oven to 225 degrees. Line two baking sheets with silpats or parchment paper. Peel pineapples. Using a small melon baller or the eye remover on a vegetable peeler, remove and discard eyes of pineapple. Slice pineapple very thinly, preferably with a mandoline. Place slices on baking sheets. Cook until tops look dried, about 30 minutes. Flip slices; cook for 30 minutes more. Flip slices again and cook another 30 minutes more until completely dried. Before the final flip, place a small ball of rolled up tin foil under the "flower" if you would like to mold it to be more of a flower shape. Refrigerate in an airtight container up to 3 days.

Head to the Hills An overnight train journey away from Hanoi lies Sapa, one of Vietnam’s most fascinating French hill stations surrounded by landscapes of terraced rice paddies. The region is home to many of Vietnam’s ethnic hilltribe minority groups who retain their traditions and wear colourful dyed and woven fabrics and etched silver jewellery. Boat on the Bay Just a few hours’ drive from Hanoi lies a truly magical natural wonder – Halong Bay. Thousands of limestone mountains emerge from the tranquil waters of the Gulf of Tonkin to create a mystical and beautiful backdrop for the converted Chinese junks sailing amongst the outcrops. Enjoy a swim in the refreshing waters, feast on fresh seafood from the bay and relax aboard an atmospheric boat meandering through the islands.
Culture and Coast Central Vietnam is home to historic Hue. Here, explore the Citadel, scene of the Tet Offensive during the American War and the seat of power for the Nguyen family. Separated from Hue by a stunning mountain pass is Hoi An, formerly a quiet fishing village and currently an artist’s Mecca and home to some of the country’s best cuisine. It is a paradise for shoppers, diners and photographers. Set on the banks of the tranquil Thu Bon River, Hoi An retains its small-town feel, but today its narrow laneways are filled with tailor shops and artist stalls. Don’t Miss Saigon Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is the economic powerhouse of the country – the city is modern, yet travellers can still see the Vietnam of old. The country’s recent turbulent history is evident here with a visit to the infamous Cu Chi Tunnels, the former US Embassy
and the War Museum. Further south is the picture postcard Mekong Delta, an extremely fertile and friendly region with paddy fields, floating markets and bustling waterways. Hoi An and China Beach China Beach was the hang out for GIs in search of rest and recuperation during the American War. There are numerous accommodation options on the nearby beach from resorts replicating the town’s diverse architecture to the most opulent offering in the country boasting pool villas and butler service. Nha Trang Further south, Nha Trang is perhaps the country’s premiere and most popular beach destination. There are numerous hotels springing up along the city’s busy main beach but a few kilometres from the centre you can find a

sanctuary in a boutique hotel with bungalows right on the sand. A short boat ride takes you to a hideaway property of understated luxury, castaway island style. Featuring private pools, outdoor bathrooms and a magical spa, this is an idyllic choice. If you’re not content enjoying the immaculate beaches, try island-hopping by boat along the azure sea, snorkelling and enjoying a barbequed seafood lunch on board. Mui Ne Peninsula Four hours drive from Saigon, the tropical climate of the Mui Ne Peninsula, close to the port town of Phan Thiet, is home to arguably Vietnam’s finest beaches. Surrounded by coconut palms a number of bungalow style resorts have
begun to populate this 11km stretch of breathtaking coastline. Life runs at a relaxing pace here and in the evening you can enjoy dinner al fresco gazing across the dark ocean sparkling with the lights of fishing boats. Phu Quoc Island Tucked away in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc Island is home to a vibrant fishing community and pristine white sand beaches. Tourism hasn’t really arrived here yet and there are only a small number of accommodation options but for those who don’t mind having little to do but relax and unwind it is the perfect option. mmm

Simply Paradise Saint Lucia with Kuoni 22nd – 28th September 2013 by Serena Menelaws
Sunday 22nd September
A
s I arrived at London Gatwick first thing, the excitement and apprehension set in. After meeting a couple of the other girls that are coming on the trip also, we checked in at one of the Virgin self-service check in points which was quick and easy. Once our boarding pass was printed we dropped our luggage off at the bag drop off. I found Virgin Airlines very quick and hassle free. The service and menu choice was excellent with
several different options to choose from. Seat back TVs were also available showing a selection of films, TV channels, music channels and of course games. Our flight home was also the same! The legroom was good on both flights. Blankets and pillows were offered even in economy, on our night flight home. We had previously been advised that at we were staying at Anse Chastanet on a sharing basis. Once the flight and transfer had concluded, to our surprise, they had upgraded us and we checked
into the Jade Mountain Hotel in a luxury Moon room which had its own private infinity pool and comes with a butler! Amazing!! With 14 ‘sanctuaries’ (rooms) with pools and five without, this hotel is ideal if you are on honeymoon or just want to get away from it all. Jade Mountain can be booked on a bed and breakfast, half board or all inclusive board basis. Each ‘sanctuary’ has a hot tub whirlpool bath, four poster beds and the fourth wall missing offering an unbelievable view of the Pitons when you wake up. Perfect!!
Monday 23rd September After a relaxing breakfast bought to us by our butler, we checked out and had our transfer onto the Sulphur Springs where we learnt about the history of the drive in volcano, from when the last eruption was to why the smell is so bad! After a quick tour around we headed to Sugar Beach for a site inspection and a hosted lunch. Strolling around Sugar Beach, it is obvious why this hotel is so popular with 11 luxury sugar mill rooms containing their own private plunge pool, four poster bed and butler service. This is an amazing place for honeymooners. If you want something more direct to the beach, then the luxury beach front bungalows are ideal. Once lunch was over, we then had a two hour transfer to St. James Club Morgan Bay. On arrival we were offered the popular drink of rum punch whilst we checked in. Whilst we walked around on our site inspection it is clear that the Morgan Bay is definitely suitable for families and social holidays, as there are lots of entertainment for all. There are seven different room types available, garden view, ocean view, beach front, deluxe ocean view, one bedroom garden view, one bedroom ocean view and family suites which consist of two interconnecting standard rooms.
Tuesday 24th September After a lovely buffet breakfast, we had the morning at our leisure and a complimentary spa session. We then headed onto East Winds for a site inspection, which is a smaller property, still offering the amenities that a couple or honeymooners would be after. There are Yoga or Pilate’s facilities and also a track for
jogging or taking a walk around with different obstacles along the way, if early morning exercise is what you are after. Then onto the Windjammer Landings after lunch. This hotel is great for everyone!! There were building site works happening when we were visiting the property and as the client numbers were down due to being out of season, this is the ideal time to do any maintenance work. The hibiscus suites are perfect for families, as these are close to the hotel amenities and can be offered as a one or two bedroom suite with interconnecting doors. If there is a large group or family, then the private estates are perfect. These come with either three or four bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Ceiling fans and air-conditioning offer comfort throughout, along with a fully-equipped kitchen, spacious terrace, pool and private parking. They even come with a chef! Once the site inspection was finished we then headed to the last hotel of the day, Calabash Cove. This property is ideal if you are after a hotel with a great location, as it is set away on its own but you can reach Gros Islet if you wished. With 26 luxurious suites and cottages, each one is spacious and airy, including Jacuzzi and shower, king size bed and either with balcony or terrace. There are 9 water’s edge cottage’s: beachside cottages with their own private verandah and plunge pool and a view across Bonaire Bay. Four swim up junior suites: steps away from the infinity edge pool, these room types offer private access directly from the patio. You can also swim across to the pool bar and watch the sunset. Thirteen sunset ocean view junior suite’s: offering an ocean view to the Caribbean sunset. There is also amazing spa facilities here. You can chose to have a treatment overlooking the sea or in one of the treatment rooms, which are designed to be very simple but relaxing. a

Wednesday 25th September After our buffet breakfast at St. James’s Club Morgan Bay, we then had a quick transfer over to the Bay Gardens Beach Resort. This hotel is in a great location. It is in the heart of Rodney Bay with a selection of shops, bars and restaurant’s to choose from. Bay Gardens is set on Reduit Beach with beautiful white sands and blue sea. It is perfect for attracting beach lovers who want some sun and socialising. The rooms available in this hotel are one bedroom suites complete with a full kitchen, living and dining area. Two bedroom suites are also available with interconnecting door to expand, suitable for families or slightly larger groups. There is a beach side dining restaurant called Hi Tide and the Trios Caribbean Fusion Restaurant serves an exceptional blend of Caribbean, European and Asian. Guests can enjoy house favourites, including mouth-watering Caribbean pepper pot soup, spiced christophene salad, or jerk rack of lamb. Pool bar and beach bar are also included in the all inclusive option. The next hotel we saw was Cap Maison, perfectly set out and intimate if you are looking for your honeymoon or time away together. This five star property is unique in its own way. Each room offers something different and a variety of upgrades are available such as
ocean view junior suites, one bedroom villa suites, one bedroom ocean view villa suites and one bedroom ocean view villa suite with a pool. Cap Maison is designed to have a very Mediterranean feel, so the lobby and the entrance are exactly how you would find in the Mediterranean, but bought to the Caribbean making a unique twist to the property. Restaurants: Dining at the Cliff at Cap – perched on the edge of the cliff, it has unrivalled panoramic views and is cooled night and day by a soft sea breeze. The Cliff at Cap offers casual breakfasts and lunches, and at night transforms into a fine dining experience with creative, contemporary cuisine, incorporating French West Indian influences and focussing on fresh produce. Theo’s Lounge is an air conditioned spacious recreational room of a Spanish theme, reserved to guests who would like to entertain friends or family at the resort. There guests can enjoy games, watch sports and even help themselves to a drink from Cap Maison’s small self-serve bar. Located just a few steps away from Cap Maison Resort is the secluded Smuggler’s Cove beach, one of the ideal places where guests love to relax during the day. A variety of wine, whiskey and rum are all available. The hotel we are staying at next, is The BodyHoliday Le Sport. This hotel has one clear
message which is ‘Give us your body for a week and we’ll give you back your mind’. The idea is that you centre your holiday towards wellbeing and being healthy, there are a range of activities you can choose from a few to name: Yoga, water aerobics, water skiing, fencing, stress management, Caribbean dance class, boxing, Zumba and stretch and tone classes. The room type we stayed in was a luxury ocean view room this consists of two queen beds. The room also has a mahogany-top writing desk, an armchair and chaise lounge. The bathroom has a granite vanity with one sink and a Kohler Body all-over jet shower. French doors open to a balcony or terrace that is furnished with wicker armchairs and a dining table. We also had a complimentary spa session, this ranged across the group from manicures to Indian head massages.
Thursday 26th September After breakfast we checked out and made the transfer to the zip lining centre, where we are set up in our harnesses and hard hats ready to take on the longest and highest zip lines. After an afternoon of fun filled adventure we headed on for our last night in Saint Lucia staying at the Rendezvous. Upon arrival we were served the famous rum punch cocktail and advised that out luggage would be taken to our rooms for us whilst we did our sight inspection of the resort. This resort is perfect for weddings as the wedding location is right on the beach, this is always where the newlywed’s would have their candle lit dinner. There are a handful of room types. The accommodation we stayed in was a beachfront cottage perfect to walk straight out to the beach, and these rooms are spacious and include a four poster bed, air conditioning and a luxury bathroom.
Friday 27th September After a morning relaxing on the beach it was time to pack up and return back to London. The transfer was quick and easy back to Hewanorra airport. After eight hours we arrived into London Gatwick and said our goodbyes. mmm

For some it may be really getting in to the spirit of Christmas (apologies for mentioning the C word when it’s not even December yet!) and going all out to make it the best Yuletide celebration ever. For others researching and booking next year’s holiday can chase the winter blues away, or if you are lucky, actually going on holiday and getting some precious winter sun, is definitely up
there on the list! As ways of coping, these can work well, but they can be over all too quickly. So here’s my tip for something that can last a bit longer – plan a project to tackle once the weather improves. I’m talking outdoor or garden projects, because that’s my thing. Part of the beauty of this sort of planning is visualising the stages and end result of your project that you can indulge in. You can pick a part of your garden that you would like to transform. Picture it cleared of clutter and weeds, and see it replanted with various different plants/shrubs, or paved, or decked. Imagine what else would work there, some kind of structure? Maybe a pergola, conservatory,

summerhouse, or some trellis or fencing. It’s a bit like virtual gardening. You can try out ideas in your imagination and then if the idea works start doing some real time planning, measuring up and costing out. Another way to make this work for you is finding something that inspires you as the starting point for your project. Research garden magazines, brochures and of course the web. Here’s a possible candidate, our new Retreat shelter is a very attractive nook for relaxing in. The standard Retreat (pictured here) is a modest size and could easily fit into most gardens. It even has the option of polycarbonate sheeting on the roof to give you some
protection from showers. You can imagine what outdoor furniture you would put in it, down to the colour of the cushions and throws, and even plan the planting and other accessories around it. With imagination and some planning through the wintertime, you can be ready to put your plans into action as soon as conditions allow. And with the added benefit of visualising your sunny, spring project coming to fruition it will help to chase the dreariness of winter away. Special Offer... Top Honours for Jaguar Landrover at awards
Jaguar Land Rover achieved a remarkable triple success at the 2013 Scottish Car of the Year Awards, with honours going to the new Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Jaguar F-TYPE sports car. The Jaguar F-TYPE beat stiff competition to win the Sporting category award, impressing the judges – some of Scotland’s most important motoring journalists – with its elegant design, formidable performance and impressive customer appeal. Alisdair Suttie, President of the
Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, said: "We have waited a very long time for the Jaguar FTYPE, more than four decades in fact, but this year’s Sporting winner does it with panache. It also does it with elegance, superb performance and complete desirability." Ian Callum, Jaguar Director of Design, accepted the award at a ceremony in Glasgow and commented: “This award is a wonderful recognition of the efforts invested in creating the new FTYPE. It is a sports car that reaffirms the brand’s sporting
bloodline in both its performance and design.” Range Rover received the Best Luxury Car Award, an acknowledgement of how Land Rover has continued to develop the quality, comfort and refinement of the fourth generation vehicle. Alisdair Suttie said: “Luxury comes in many forms, but the Range Rover brings together such a broad range of talents, it stands head and shoulders above the competition. It also brings innovative design, supreme comfort and worldbeating style.”

The accolade adds to a growing list of industry awards for the new Range Rover, including luxury car of the year titles from What Car? and Top Gear Magazine. The all-new Range Rover Sport was also named Scottish SUV of the Year. Sharing the same lightweight construction principles with its larger sibling, and built on the same highly efficient production line at Land Rover’s Solihull plant, the new Range Rover Sport has made significant advances in handling,
performance and customer appeal. “A good SUV has to be many things: good looking, roomy, comfortable and ideally great both on road and off,” said Alisdair Suttie. “Thanks to an allaluminium lightweight body that has helped it lose 400kg, the latest Range Rover Sport is all those things, as well as being much faster and surprisingly economical. “Factor in the availability of a seven-seat option and we think
this is the best SUV available on the roads of Scotland today.” The Range Rover and Range Rover Sport awards were accepted by Fiona Pargeter, Head of Global PR Communications, Jaguar Land Rover, who commented: “Scotland is a key market for Land Rover, so we are extremely proud to receive these awards, and value the recognition they make of Land Rover raising the bar for quality and performance in the premium SUV market.”

The Success of the Bentley Bentley Motors has built on its successful performance for the first half of 2013, after announcing that global customer deliveries to the end of September have grown by nine per cent (6,516 cars) against the same period in 2012 (5,969 cars).
Bentley’s largest market, the Americas, sustained its strong growth, with Europe and the Middle East also posting impressive gains, driven by sales success across all model lines; the new Flying Spur, Continental GT and Mulsanne. Kevin Rose, Bentley’s Board Member for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, commented: “Strong performance from our W12 models continued, with the Continental GT Speed and Continental GT Speed Convertible proving successful in all territories. This, added to increases in our V8 and Mulsanne models, maintains our impressive performance and strongly reinforces our position as market leader among our direct competitors in the luxury car market.” The Americas strengthened its position as Bentley’s
largest market, delivering 2,022 cars to customers, a 16 per cent increase on the same period in 2012. Buoyed by recent dealer expansion, with 44 Bentley dealers now in Continental Europe alone, the European market posted a 14 per cent growth to 1,081 cars, with the UK delivering 1,055 cars, representing a 24 per cent increase. The Mulsanne, Bentley’s flagship model, continued to prove popular in the Middle East, with a 53 per cent delivery increase, with the market as a whole growing to 596 cars, rising by 26 per cent. There was a similar story in Asia Pacific, where 315 cars were delivered to customers, a 38 per cent increase. In Asia the Bentley growth in Japan continued with a per cent increase in deliveries (142 cars). In China, with the eagerly anticipated new Flying Spur deliveries having commenced in the third quarter, 1,264 cars were delivered, representing a 17 per cent decrease over last year. Overall, Bentley remains optimistic to reach double digit growth of its sales figures in the full year 2013.

BUSINESS Broadband Fibre Optic Cables
Faster and free flowing Internet around Britain IT IS a familiar refrain, but now a major business support group has made a renewed call for the Government to accelerate boosting high-speed broadband internet coverage across the county. It follows a report from the Public Accounts Committee which was critical of the government's Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) framework. The BDUK is designed to boost broadband coverage across the UK, particularly in rural areas. But the PAC report said it was being “mismanaged” and said “sole provider BT has been
placed in a quasi-monopolistic position, which it is exploiting by restricting access to cost and roll-out information”. Following a backlash from MPs, the chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses in Kent and Medway, Roger House, said: “The findings of the public accounts committee echo many of FSB’s concerns regarding the BDUK rural broadband programme, particularly that small rural businesses are failing to benefit from competition in this sector. “The lack of fit-for-purpose connectivity in all Kent’s rural areas is something that must be addressed, as rural firms are already at a disadvantage to their urban counterparts.
“The lack of fit-for-purpose connectivity in all Kent’s rural areas is something that must be addressed, as rural firms are already at a disadvantage to their urban counterparts.
“With the Government’s ‘Digital by Default’ policy firmly in place, the roll-out of rural broadband needs to be a much bigger priority, and a range of providers should be enabled to fill the gaps in the current programme. “Increased competition will lead to increased provision of broadband, and the end goal must be to get the entire UK universally connected.”

Jobs Fair
Medway stage job oppertunities for job seeking locals DOZENS of employers gathered together to greet more than 2,000 people at the Medway Jobs and Apprenticeship Fair in Chatham. The event, staged at the Pentagon Centre at the end of September, was organised by Medway Council and Jobcentre Plus. Fifteen hundred job opportunities were advertised by employers from across the county. Visitors were able to complete and hand in job applications, and there was also advice from a range of agencies about training, apprenticeships and developing the skills to help people back into work or find a new career. These included the council backed Employ Medway service, which is based in the High Street, Chatham and offers courses and one-to-one support for people who have been unemployed for some time.
There was also information from Jobcentre Plus on how employers and jobseekers can benefit from the Wage Incentive scheme, together with details about work trials and work experience. These schemes are part of a range of support offered by Jobcentre Plus under the Get Britain Working Initiative and have helped 3,378 young people into work in Medway this year alone. Jane Chitty, portfolio holder for strategic development and economic growth, said: “I am delighted this was such a success with even more people attending than last year. I was really impressed with the enthusiasm and drive shown by everyone who came along. “More than 100 people found work through last year's event and I am confident the figure will be even higher this year.

Dartford Crossing Toll Improvement
THE move to free-flowing tolls at the Dartford Crossing took a major step forward after a French firm was awarded the £367 million contract to deliver the technology. It is the latest phase in shifting from the existing process of all cars having to stop and make a transaction before entering the tunnel or exiting the bridge. By only handling payments made remotely – either in advance or after using the crossing – it is hoped it will be a major step in easing the daily congestion which builds up at the M25 pinch point. The Highways Agency awarded a seven-year deal to French motorway operator Sanef. It will design, implement, deliver and operate the tolling system. A three-year extension will be activated if agreed by both sides.
Motorists can register to use the crossing by phone, text, online, various retail outlets or pay within a day of using the link to Essex. Failure to do so will result in a £70 fine. Roads minister Stephen Hammond said: “This will help thousands of drivers who use the crossing every day, and benefit both the local and national economy.” The new technology will be rolled out throughout 2014. Nigel Gray, Highways Agency project manager, said: “Once it is fully implemented drivers will not have to stop at the barriers, but will pay for their journey remotely. “This will reduce congestion and ease traffic flow. The contract covers the development as well as the ongoing operation of the new payment system.“We remain on track to deliver this improvement in October 2014.”

Fundraising at its finest 86 mmm
FUNDRAISING telethons have been and gone over the years, but one has remained steadfast.
Since it was first staged back in 1980, the BBC's Children in Need has provided a much needed, and in many cases essential, injection of funds to a range of good causes. In fact, as it prepares for its most star-studded event yet this month, it has already raised a staggering £690 million. Last year alone it raised close to £50m. With Pudsey Bear, its instantly recognisable character, once again Kent will be caught up in all the excitement, with hundreds of fundraising events taking place across the county – with everything from sponsored silences, to cake sales, to good old fashioned
collections ensuring we help swell the national total. Among those backing the 2013 event – which culminates in the telethon on November 15 – are Take That star and X Factor judge Gary Barlow, BBC One Show presenters Alex Jones and Matt Baker, and pop stars JLS and Union J. And, as has been the case since that first broadcast more than 30 years, Sir Terry Wogan will be the main host – ably assisted by the cream of the BBC talent crop including Fearne Cotton, Nick Grimshaw and Tess Daly. Sir Terry – the charity's life president – has never lost sight of the event's core purpose, however.
He said: “Another year older and my childhood is almost ancient history, though memories from back then are very fond ones. I was lucky. Mine was a happy childhood but for many children in the UK, this isn’t the case, which is why the BBC started Children in Need. Get involved. Go on, you know you want to. Together we can make 2013 our greatest year ever.” The 75-year-old added: “I am like Brucie on Strictly in that they will probably have to shoot me if they want to get me off the show.
“But we are both well stricken in years and there will come a time when Brucie has to say it’s time to hang up his dancing pumps and I’ll have to say that it’s time for me to hang up my dinner jacket. “Then again I think I will have enough sense to know when I can no longer stay on my feet for seven hours of live TV.” At the launch event Gary Barlow added: “I’m doing my bit for BBC Children in Need, are you? Whether you bake, race, dress up or sing, every penny goes towards making a
difference to the lives of children and young people based here in the UK”. David Ramsden is chief executive of BBC Children in Need. He said: “Children across the UK urgently need our help and we can only be there for them thanks to the incredible generosity, imagination and commitment of our supporters. This year we hope that everyone will get involved, have fun and raise money that will change young lives.” Certainly the event has enjoyed some high profile patronage in years gone by – and the now traditional
chart-topping single. The beautiful rendition of Lou Reed classic perfect day started a string of Children in Need singles which climbed to the very top of the charts. Other artists involved have included Girls Aloud, Will Young, the Spice Girls, McFly and Peter Kay. And with proceeds going to charity, they prove a vital component in the effort to raise millions. The charity's aim is simple – to make a positive change to the lives of
disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. It’s vision is that every child in the UK has a safe, happy and secure childhood and the chance to reach their potential. Explains a spokesman: “We will realise this vision by supporting, promoting and publicising work that addresses the challenges that children and young people face and work that builds their skills and resilience.
mmm 89
“We are currently supporting around 2,700 projects that are working with children facing a range of disadvantages for example, poverty and deprivation; children who have been the victims of abuse or neglect, or disabled young people.” Set against a tough economic backdrop in recent years, it remains more remarkable than ever just how
successful Children in Need remains in extracting money. Like Comic Relief and Sport Relief, it knows it must deliver good quality entertainment – and plenty of famous faces – to ensure the public fully engages and gets behind the project.
It seems likely this month's event will once again prove to be a runaway success...and given the hard work of everyone who takes part or who devotes their time free to help swell its coffers, who would begrudge it? Children in Need takes place on November 15. To get involved or to donate, visit www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey. mmm
