Maidstone, Medway Magazine

Name Welcome to the February issue of mmm – and, like everyone else, we're getting ready for a sophisticated month of fashion, fun, and of course, love. Valentine's Day is upon us once again, with restaurants and hotels laying out the red carpet for those wanting to inject a little excitement into their relationships; we feature some of their special offers inside. But so often it's a question of just what to get that special someone in your life, isn't it? A wealthy couple who are friends of mine came up with a fun idea for Christmas. Rather than spending a fortune on gifts, they vowed to spend no more than £5 each. As a result they scoured everywhere looking for something special. In these austere times it may be an example we could all follow? There was certainly plenty to thrill at a recent exhibition I attended at London's Somerset House. Valentino: A Master of Couture is dedicated to the Italian fashion designer. It is truly a sumptuous treat for the eyes. The outfits are melt in the mouth delicious and the quality of the design fabulous. You can get a glimpse of what it was like inside this issue. While we're getting tantalisingly close to spring and the explosion of colours it brings with it, if you're craving a little sun, then on our travel pages we take a look at Namibia; which should warm you up nicely. For now though, I'll leave you to enjoy this month's magazine. Rasa

Dermot has the

It was perhaps the perfect example of how Dermot O'Leary does things a little differently despite his remarkably successful career

O

N September 14, 2012, O'Leary and his long-time sweetheart Dee Koppang tied the knot in the picturesque surroundings of Chiddingstone; a classic picture postcard west Kent village. There were a splattering of famous faces at the event, as the likes of Holly Willoughby, Fearne Cotton, Caroline Flack, Bear Grylls, James Corden and Leigh Francis –

better known as Keith Lemon – turned out, alongside friends and family, to wish the couple the very best of luck as they started out life together as man and wife. So, surely, you would have expected the happy couple to give their bank balance something of a boost by selling the rights to the ceremony to a glossy magazine? That the local residents would have been kept well away from the famous faces which descended on their village?

For the happy couple and their family and friends to be ringed by burly security guards to ensure no one dared take an unofficial snap? But this was no ordinary celebrity wedding. Not only did they refuse to sign a lucrative magazine deal, but after tying the knot they emerged into the sunlight from inside the pretty church, only to stand and pose for photographers, professional and amateur alike. They even presented a photo to the press to use, asking them only

Wed-Factor to make a donation to the local RNLI team in Ramsgate or a charity in Colchester if they were so inclined. It was, however, very in keeping with a couple who are both excelling in their professional careers, with Dermot's profile growing each month, but who are dedicated to keeping their feet on the ground. Neither are they strangers to Kent – regularly being spotted in the county. Dee, 33, may have been born in Oslo, Norway, but as a young child arrived in the UK and grew up in Ramsgate, where she attended the local St Stephen's Infants and then

St Lawrence College. She is a highly accomplished television producer and director, working in the worlds of entertainment and observational documentary. Her portfolio includes work across BBC1 and 2, Channel 4, MTV, VH1 and the Discovery Channel. She produced two seasons of Big Brother in the UK and it was her work with Endemol UK which would lead her to meet her future husband. She has recently embarked on projects in the US too. Her mother is Thanet councillor Rosalind Binks, who has watched the couple's relationship blossom

over the last ten years, since the two first started dating. Dermot had proposed during a romantic break to New York in 2011. Cllr Binks, who lives in Broadstairs, said: “Dermot has been a part of our family for the last 10 years. I couldn’t wish for a better son-in-law. “The wedding day was wonderful and my daughter looked so beautiful. To see your daughter married to someone you wholeheartedly approve of is what every mother wants. It was a very happy day.” It would be easy, and lazy, to assume Dermot O'Leary is the professional powerhouse in this

relationship. His new wife could compile quite a compelling argument to the contrary. What's more, she could do so in a variety of different languages, through her fluency in English, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and working knowledge of French and German. The gift of the gab is certainly something they both share. Dermot is far more than just the pretty boy fronting the likes of X Factor. It is his gentle yet swift wit and humour which has won him many admirers and led him to become one of the UK's foremost presenting talents. As he prepares to turn 40 in May, Dermot has seen his career rise from local radio to the biggest prime-time TV shows in the UK. Born in Essex, he manages to endear himself to both men and women, and had his first big break

when he became host to Big Brother's Little Brother – the companion show to what was then still one of UK TV's hottest properties. Previous to that, he had been a runner on TV show Light Lunch with comics Mel Giedrovic and Sue Perkins, before becoming one of the original presenting line-up of Channel 4's T4 team. He went on to host 1 vs 100 quiz show on BBC1 prior to being confirmed as the new host of the X Factor in 2007 – a move controversial at the time as it called time on the presenting career of the popular Kate Thornton. Today, in addition to his TV work, he hosts his own BBC Radio 2 show at the weekends which continues to increase its audience. What's more, he's got to interview some of the biggest names in the

business – including the likes of Madonna, and has the bizarre distinction of being the last person to ever stand on a stage in the UK with Michael Jackson. Ahead of what was scheduled to be a record-breaking run of shows at London's O2 Arena, Dermot introduced the performer onto a stage at the venue to announce his This Is It tour. The singer would die just weeks before the first date was due to be staged. That was his last public appearance. "It was crazy when he passed away,” Dermot said in the aftermath of Jackson's death, “because I was just finished answering questions about what it was like to meet him. "It just shows you how much I know because when I met him, and admittedly I wasn't with him for long, he gave me a hug and I a

health and next thing you know he passes away. "I felt quite honoured that I was the last man in the country to introduce him on stage, that's certainly something to tell the grandkids about. "I felt so sorry for his family and especially his kids. "You know, I hugged and introduced James Brown about a month before he died, so maybe it's me, don't come anywhere near me - I'm the new Swine Flu!"

Meeting his heroes has also been an odd experience. Dermot explains: “Having Morrissey on my radio show was an experience – he called me shallow and I told him that he was confusing being shallow with liking life. He's an odd character: the minute I'd play a record, he'd be charm personified and when we'd cut back to our interview, he'd turn back into pantomime Morrissey. He still calls me occasionally just to say hello.

“Madonna was surprisingly warm, incredibly intelligent and wonderfully thick-skinned. An amazing woman.” With his easy going friendly nature, Dermot O'Leary seems destined to remain near the very top of Britain's most-loved celebrities list for some little time to come. What's more, it would seem his relationship with Dee will flourish as they each support one another in reaching new highs in their respective careers. mmm

♥ Size matters

We’re afraid gesturing with your hands just isn’t an accurate enough measurement of your partners bust size! Look at the sizing labels in her underwear, it’s far more reliable. Something that little bit special

Women tend to buy quite practical everyday underwear so it’s great when you pick up something a bit more luxurious for us. Most women want to feel special in their underwear. They want to feel sexy and sophisticated. Basques are great for those extra special occasions and will make her feel amazing.

♥ Try to relax

When you are in store looking for lingerie, remember to relax. The quicker you want to be in and out, the more likely you are to panic and buy something that you haven’t thought through. Ask our expertly trained team for their advice; they will be more than willing to help you.

Valentino: Master of Couture

A

MAJOR new exhibition celebrating the life and work of Valentino has opened at Somerset House. “Valentino: Master of Couture” is a glamorous exhibition focusing exclusively on haute couture created by the legendary Italian designer. With a 50-year career starting in the late 1950s, this exhibition showcases over 130 hand-crafted designs worn by icons such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren

and Gwyneth Paltrow. A prophetic designer and creator of exquisite, beautiful clothes, this is Valentino as he has never been seen before. Featuring dresses from the couture catwalk and red carpet, as well as designs commissioned by private clients, this exhibition brings together a comprehensive collection of couture, much of which has never been seen outside the Valentino atelier. The exhibition gives visitors a rare glimpse behind the closed doors of Valentino’s world, allowing them to experience

the thrill of walking the runway and reveal Valentino’s craftsmanship. “Each of these designs have a beautiful story,” says Valentino. “The atelier crafted each so diligently by hand, taking hours, sometimes days to complete. The details are incredibly intricate, though outside the runway shows and events, the dresses have rarely been seen, so to be able to showcase these designs at Somerset House, where they can be seen in great detail by the public, is very unique.”

Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece’s pearl-encrusted ivory silk wedding gown, worn in 1995

Known for his long-standing relationships with the world’s most glamorous women, Valentino has designed for princesses, first ladies and Hollywood icons. As a result, exhibition highlights include the vintage dress worn by Julia Roberts when she won an Academy Award in 2001, Jackie Onassis’s wedding dress from Valentino’s 1968 White Collection and Princess MarieChantal of Greece’s pearl-encrusted ivory silk wedding gown, which the New York socialite wore to marry Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece in 1995.

The exhibition design for Valentino: Master of Couture has been created specially for Somerset House by internationally renowned design team Kinmonth Monfreda, long time collaborators of Valentino, and realised in collaboration with Valentino and Giancarlo Giammetti. The exhibition has been curated by Alistair O’Neill for Somerset House with Patrick Kinmonth and Antonio Monfreda. The exhibition runs until 3rd March. Valentino Garavani, often known simply as Valentino, is a legendary fashion designer and master couturier. He founded his eponymous fashion house in Rome in the late 1950s and has since established an illustrious career designing for the world’s most glamorous women, from royalty to Hollywood icons. From his start designing dresses, Valentino and long-time partner Giancarlo Giammetti built the Valentino brand into an international empire, now one of the most iconic fashion brands in the world, often associated with his signature colour, “Valentino Red”. Throughout his career Valentino has been awarded the highest recognitions and achievements, including Italy’s highest distinction, Cavalier di Gran Croce, and France’s Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur, in addition to numerous awards in the fashion industry. Valentino retired from his career in fashion in 2008, though he continues to create and follow his passions.

...and eat it A

FTER the blushing bride, one of the star attractions of any good wedding reception is the cake. Not only is it a sweet way to end

the event, but it also gives the evening guests a glimpse of the splendours your day held. Traditionally two or three tiers and covered in more frothy white icing than the bride is in silk, the cake

magestically presides over the whole reception. Already on display when guests take their seats for the wedding breakfast, it is finally cut into amid much fanfare and photography once everyone’s far

too full to eat another thing. But don’t let that stop you from choosing a cake that’s as delicious as it is beautiful. With many guests choosing to take their cake home as a reminder of the beautiful day they’ve just

enjoyed, you want to ensure the sponge is every bit as gorgeous as you are. Whether you go for a simple sponge, fabulous fruit or - that treat you’ve been denying yourself for months - heavenly

chocolate, or a tier of each, be sure to taste a good selection of offerings, rather than just buying the cake that fits the bill. This filling is important not only for taste, but also for storage. If you take the truly traditional route and save the tiop tier of your wedding cake for the Christening of your first child then you need to be sure it will store well. So don’t forget to ask about this when you’re treating yourself to a few tasty samples. Once you’ve chosen the filling you’re halfway there,

but the decoration is possibly the biggest job of all. While the tradition of white and your wedding colours is obviously a beautiful one, it’s not always the first choice of brides and goorms to be. Nowadays anything goes, with some couples choosing to celebrate something from their lives with quirky characters decking the top of the cake, or even making the cake look like something else entirely - suited and booted mice on top of a ‘cheese’ cake is not unknown for quirky

couples with a love of animals. Other couples have even taken the theme one step further, completely replacing the cake with wheels of cheese, decorated with crackers. The choice really is yours. But if all that seems too complicated why not keep things really simple anyone for a tower of cupcakes? mmm

Peace and tranquility in Aylesford

A

MID the hustle and the bustle of modern everyday life, it seems finding somewhere designed for nothing other than peace and relaxation is far from easily done. After all, it would seem everywhere has a commercial motive at heart; a desire to set the heart racing or the adrenalin pumping. Even the luxurious surrounds of spas and relaxation centres come with a high price and a timetable to follow. Yet just a few miles outside Maidstone is one of the country's

best kept secrets. A genuine refuge from the modern world. Aylesford Priory charges no entry fee, is open each and every day of the year and has become a place of pilgrimage, while extending a welcome to visitors of any faith.

The Friars, as it is frequently referred to, is perhaps unique as a tourist attraction; and a remarkable throw back to ideals established hundreds of years ago. But then that is perhaps a

a understandable given that it is run by the Carmelites, a Roman Catholic religious organisation founded in the 13th century. It's religious focus centres around contemplative prayer with a close affinity to the Virgin Mary. The Friars has been very much a key part of the Carmelites since 1242. It was then the first

mmm 39

Carmelites – hermits from Mount Carmel in northern Israel – arrived from the Holy Land. Handed a small piece of land by crusader Richard de Grey – who had a manor at Aylesford – the priory was first founded. Just five years later, the then Bishop of Rochester, Richard of Wendover, officially recognised the Carmelite foundation at Aylesford

and the first General Chapter of the Order outside the Holy Land was held there. The Chapter changed the lifestyle of the Carmelites from hermits (not a good lifestyle in this climate!) to mendicant friars and over the next 50 years more than thirty Carmelite priories were founded in England and Wales. As a result, the Priory has become a place of pilgrimage and is considered to be at the very heart of the Carmelite movement. Today, it is estimated some 200,000 visit each year. However, the Carmelites have not been in situ since their foundation. In 1538, during the dissolution of the monasteries, The Priory passed into private ownership – initially Sir Thomas Wyatt of Allington Castle. By 1657 it belonged to businessman Sir John Banks. He converted it into a mansion, calling it The Friars, where visitors included the likes of diarist Samuel Pepys. In 1949 The Friars was put up for sale and the Carmelites were able to buy back their former home. Having been damaged by fire, work began to restore the buildings. It swiftly became a flourishing pilgrimage centre. Today, it serves as a centre of prayer for all Christians, and a place of peace for those in search of meaning in their lives. Explains a spokesman: “When The Friars returned to Aylesford in 1949 it was never with the intention that it should become a

place of pilgrimage. “However, as soon as we arrived home, so the people began to come to pray and to help with the enormous task of rebuilding and restoring the priory. “Today many thousands come on organised pilgrimages or alone, some for a time of retreat or relaxation, some for meetings or conferences. Some simply wander in from the road and are taken into the unique atmosphere of prayer and hospitality which is the Friars. “The shrine at Aylesford is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, and beautiful chapels dedicated to the saints of Carmel, notably St Simon Stock, have been described as prayers in stone. “Today the Friars is a place of welcome for people of all faiths and none, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. “Carmel is a worldwide Christian religious family that first came to Britain in 1242 and is alive and active today with over 40 communities of friars, religious sisters and lay Carmelites in England, Scotland and Wales. “Carmelites seek to be contemplatives, friends with God, who form praying communities at the service of all God's people. “Reading the signs of the times we are engaged in many different ministries of service and presence: retreats and spiritual development; parishes; prison, hospital and university chaplaincy; counselling; teaching and research; publishing and broadcasting; ecumenism and interfaith dialogue; justice and peace work; and many other apostolates.” Aylesford is not the only foothold in the county for the Carmelites. In Faversham, there is the National Shrine of Saint Jude, served by the Camelite friars of the parish church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Yet it is the open-door policy and dedication to calm reflection which marks Aylesford Priory out and makes it a little different. It's not all about making money. It's not even about forcing a set of religious ideals on to you. It is about you finding you. And in this world, that's something to be welcomed. mmm

salt & pepper Knob of butter ¼ bunch of chopped parsley Rapeseed or olive oil Method: Chorizo Casserole Heat pan that can have a lid fitted to it with oil, add chorizo and fry gently until oil is coming out. Then add onion and garlic and sweat off for a few minutes, then add tomatoes and fry and add thyme. Add red wine and reduce by half. Add spoon of tomato puree and stock. Add parsley, salt and pepper and taste. Cover with lid and cook on simmer for approximately, 45 minutes. Sea Bass Heat non-stick frying pan until HOT, season fishes both sides and add oil to pan about a tablespoon. Make sure it is hot and place fish skin side down in pan pressing fish down gently to stop it curling up and making sure all the skin is in contact with the pan add butter and get to a foamy mixture, basting fish as it cooks. Fry on skin side until crispy (about 2-3 mins), turn over and finish in pan, making sure the butter is not burnt. Serve casserole on a plate, placing Sea Bass on top with some new potatoes and a wedge of lime.

Travel tips from your Local Award Winning Travel Agency How to survive a Longhaul Flight n Pre book an aisle seat, as this will give n Wear Shoes- Please don’t use plane you easy access to the galley.

toilets without wearing shoes. The flight attendants work hard to keep these areas clean but they are not miracle workers! You need loose comfortable shoes as your feet can swell during the flight so I recommend traveling in lightweight sandals. n Two Drinks-Ask your flight attendants for two drinks at a time so you don't need to call them back in 5 minutes. Remember to drink plenty of water and juice to keep you hydrated, but avoid caffeinated soft drinks, plus tea and coffee. n Exercises-Get up and stretch regularly if possible, or at least circle your ankles once an hour. The in-flight magazine will have pictures of the recommended exercises. n Dry Air-Keep the air vent above you open. Dampen a facecloth, place it over your face, and aim the air vent at the cloth and this will help with the dryness. n Wear Layers-You've got to contend with busy airports at each end, and different levels of air-conditioning on the plane, so layers are best. n Chewing Gum-Chewing can help with the changes in air pressure, as can sucking on boiled sweets. Remember, your ears don't always pop just at takeoff and landing times, but during the flight too. Chewing can also help if you feel nervous as it gives you something to do. n Use Cushions-To help ease lower back pain, place one of the pillows provided between your lower back and the seat. If you are trying to get some sleep, do support your neck - you can use your own inflatable neck pillow or scrunch one provided by the airline. I hope these hints help you when flying longhaul, especially if you are travelling in economy class. If you require further information about the destinations featured in this Travel Section, please do not hesitate to contact Baldwins Travel: 01622 762141.

Flights – Etihad Airways 30/9 London Heathrow – Abu Dhabi, Flight number EY012 The check in for economy at Heathrow Terminal 4 had a relatively short queue and was handled in a very efficient manner. I was fortunate enough to be allocated an emergency exit seat with plenty of leg room. Food and service on board was very good although slightly concerned when a member of cabin crew started saying his prayers out loud as we came into land! 30/9 Abu Dhabi – Sydney, Flight number EY454 Transit at Abu Dhabi was a bit chaotic due to a slight delay with the inbound aircraft but the 14 hour non-stop flight passed without incident. Onboard

entertainment is good and the economy class seat does allow for some sleep. Intercontinental Hotel Sydney The Intercontinental Hotel Sydney is ideally located being only a 20 minute drive from the Sydney Airport. It has two outstanding features – l Location, it is within walking distance of the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, The Rock Area and the Botanical Gardens l The views from the Club Lounge on the top floor, both day and night are simply breathtaking. All the rooms are stunning and both the service and food excellent. Hot tip – pay extra for the Club room.

trip to Australia AUSTRAVEL

Holiday Inn – Old Sydney This property is aimed more at the family and budget conscious market, again very well located within walking distance of all the main attractions. Rooms are small but adequate; the hotel feels dark and is a bit dated and bizarrely is painted brown. On the very top floor is the open air swimming pool which again gives wonderful views of the Sydney skyline. Hot tip – view from the roof. Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb A must do and one of the highlights of any visit to Sydney, full comprehensive instruction is given before you set off, all the necessary clothing provided and a headset for commentary/advice from the very knowledgeable guide, but very pricey and although you get a group

photo for free at the end, extra photos are awfully expensive. Very safe, you are linked by a harness to a static line throughout the climb, impossible to undo (we tried). Everybody has a smile on their face at the end. Hot tip – you are not allowed to take your own camera and you are breathalysed before you set off. Blue Mountain High Country Ecotour This tour starts off in the Rock area of Sydney before heading to the Great Dividing Range and the Blue Mountains National Park, visiting the small village of Leura and the Three Sisters at Katoomba and the Jamieson Valley. It is a very scenic and fascinating trip, with many things to see and do. The views are stunning with an endless number of

mmm 47

excursions into the Park and surrounding area that cater for all tastes. A must do excursion but really a day is not long enough to do it justice. Hot tip – use a tour guide as there is an awful lot to do and see in a day. Bondi Beach, Sydney Australia’s most famous beach, an icon, lovely soft sand, obviously good surf and plenty of life guards even very early in the season. The area is smaller than I had imagined but certainly lived up to its reputation. The surrounding neighbourhood is very exclusive but the promenade and some of the cafes looked a bit tired and were very expensive. Hot tip – no excuses you must ride a wave (or try).

Flight - Virgin Blue 4/10 Sydney to Cairns, Flight number DJ1429 Check in was most entertaining as there were no queues and the staff are relaxed and very laid back. The 3 hour flight was straight forward with the food and drink on board being chargeable. Thala Beach Resort, Port Douglas Set in the rainforest, yet only 10 minutes from Port Douglas, this environmentally sensitive resort looks out through the forest to the distant Barrier Reef. 84 individual bungalows are positioned on stilts in

the Eucalypt Forest surrounded by wildlife with various toads, lizards, cockatoos, and yes, spiders all making their presence known. The restaurant, food and service are all very good with the staff being very attentative and knowledgeable. Bungalows are best described as rustic with balconies/verandas but you do share these with the local wildlife. Not to everybody’s taste though, moving around the resort at night does have it moments as the walkways cut through the forest and although they are lit, the local inhabitants can make you jump (very high)!

Hot tip - carry a spare top as the birds are very accurate! Shangri La, Cairns The Shangri La overlooks the Marlin Marina, very convenient for the Esplanade Lagoon and marina area with shops, bars and restaurants nearby. The standard was a little below what you would expect from a Shangri La property, what it lacks in character is made up by its location, it is very well positioned for the harbour with a lot of the boat trips departing from nearby. Hot tip – some of the rooms are an incredibly long distance from reception. Quicksilver Outer Barrier Reef Cruise Another must for any visitor to Australia; the journey out and back by catamaran can be a little rough but is great fun and well worth the effort. You can travel by helicopter in either direction if budgets permit. Once on the pontoon the choice is

mmm 49

yours from scuba diving, walking along the seabed, snorkelling to travelling in a semi submersible submarine, or you can just sit and watch whilst enjoying a rather pleasant lunch. The staff are very helpful and offer full tuition and equipment to those who need it. I would thoroughly recommended for all. Hot tip – the sea can be very rough at times but worth the effort. Kuranda Scenic Railway Opened in 1891 this 21 mile journey connects Cairns with Kuranda and takes 1.5 hours to reach the top. Good commentary on route and plenty of photo opportunities but 90 minutes is a very long time in a slow train. Kuranda, I found very touristy with all the shops selling very similar items for very similar prices. Visited the small zoo/sanctuary which had all the creatures you would expect with the opportunity to have your photo taken whilst holding a Koala. Then back down to ground level on the Kuranda Skyrail, basically a cable car that passes down through the rain forest, whilst giving occasion to get off and explore. Takes 40 minutes in one go. Hot tip – take a good book.

but at times is exasperatingly slow. Cabins are dated but adequate, dining car, food and service are all very good. The lounge car is the perfect place to relax and get to know your fellow travellers or indeed finish your book. A good alternative, if you have the time, to flying. New rolling stock being introduced in the next few years but I got off the train feeling decidedly weary – not what I had expected. Hot tip – pay the extra for Queenslander class if not then fly.

and within one of Brisbane’s historical buildings, minutes from the main shopping area. A welcome change as it has oodles of character and a very unperturbed atmosphere. The team were very helpful, and the property is recommended for both business and leisure travellers. Rooms are very well equipped and comfortable. The whole building seems to exude a relaxed ambiance. Hot tip – stay an extra night.

Sunlander Train, Cairns to Brisbane - Queenslander Class Perfect for the well-heeled train enthusiast as this takes 30 hours +

Rendezvous Brisbane Anzac Square, Brisbane This hotel is ideally located opposite the central railway station,

Flights – Etihad Airways 08/10 Brisbane – Abu Dhabi, Flight number EY473 The check in for economy at Brisbane was very good with no queues to be seen. The flight to Abu Dhabi routes via Singapore and again the service on board was good. The only observation I would make is that the onboard entertainment system offers the same films etc as the outbound service which on such a long trip was disappointing. 09/10 Abu Dhabi – London Heathrow, Flight number EY11 Business class which offered fine dining and a flat bed, ideal for the last leg of a long trip. On board service was exceptional and pitched just at the right level. For more information or advice, please call Paul on 01892 506452.

T

HE massive sand dunes of Sossuvlei in the Namib Desert are reason alone to visit this unique land, but add to the mix some of Africa’s finest wildlife, spectacular, rugged coastlines and incredible lunar like landscapes and Namibia’s appeal is obvious. within the national parks that blend effortlessly into the environment and offer truly awe-inspiring natural views. Expect big canyons and red rocks and view the ‘welwitschia’ plants that have lived in the Namib desert for hundreds of years. It is a barren and spectacular area! The Etosha National Park – one of the country’s best game viewing areas and a setting used in the spectacular BBC series Africa! Centred on a huge salt

Fiat

Increase in size for the 500L THE return of the Fiat 500 has been one of the great success stories of recent years – an iconic classic re-imagined for the 21st century and making hay in a super-mini sector enjoying a huge surge in interest. And 2013 is going to see it get bigger... the car that is. The 500L – and for 'L' read 'large' – is a five-door vehicle which Fiat hopes will allow them to stretch their appeal a little. Having revealed prices will start from a shade under £15,000, and the first models arrive in showrooms as of March, Fiat is now hoping to lure buyers in and whip up some interest to ensure it arrives in style. So anyone who reserves a 500L prior to March will get a free Beats by Dr Dre audio system and a wheel upgrade – a package worth some £900. Fiat has also unveiled a host of finance packages too in a bid to ensure there are plenty on the road upon its arrival. Whether or not it follows in the fast-selling success of the smaller model on which it is based, remains to be seen – chances are you will be hearing about it a lot more though.

mmm 69

BMW

Addition to M6 range IF a new year has meant you re-consider your options when it comes to your choice of car, then perhaps 2013 is the year you upgrade to the latest BMW. Unveiled in the final weeks of last year, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe becomes the third distinctive design to be added to the M6 model range with the marque shouting loudly of its “performance characteristics” with its “extra luxury and aesthetic appeal”.

It will drive into showrooms in May and will not give you much change from £100,000. But for that you get a V8 engine capable of producing 560bhp and will take you from a standing start to 62mph in a mere 4.2 seconds. The electronically limited top speed is 155mph. The standard equipment fitted to the BMW M6 Gran Coupé includes 20-inch M light-alloy wheels, leather trim, heated driver and front passenger seats, automatically dimming rearview and exterior mirrors. There's a multimedia

navigation system and radio too. Available as an alternative to the standard two-zone automatic climate control is a four-zone system with a control panel in the rear. Among the other highlights of the options list are multifunction seats, heated rear seats, comfort access, a heated steering wheel, a soft close automatic function for the doors, electrically operated sun blinds and a Bang & Olufsen Advanced audio system. Interested? Well, it goes on sale from May 25 and will have an on-the-road price of £97,490.

Ford

More efficient Kuga WHERE Nissan and its Qashqai pioneered, so everyone else is now looking to following in its tracks. And for Ford that has meant bringing its mid-size SUV, the Kuga, into line and position it as a slightly classier alternative. As part of that process, the Kuga has undergone a facelift and its

fuel efficiency given a muchneeded boost. The all-new Kuga has upped it’s handling with a host of various technical advances, boosted its safety equipment and, it claims, reduced its petrol consumption by some 25 per cent, and diesel by a more modest ten. It also offers what it says is the first 'hands-free' tailgate. As the world continues to shift towards motors with green credentials, the Kuga is acutely aware it needs to shape up.

Ford says it plans the new Kuga will be followed by the modern and innovative EcoSport, Ford’s entry into the small SUV segment, and the Edge – a larger, more premium crossover that is a success in North America and other markets. Ford has said it expects to sell more than 1,000,000 SUVs in Europe in the next six years, around 10 per cent of Ford’s total volume by 2016. Since launching the first generation Kuga in 2008, Ford has sold more than 45,000 in the UK.

MAN OF STEEL

There has been a confusing few years for fans of the ultimate superhero. Superman will, for many, be Christopher Reeve and his 80s take on the hero. But the franchise got all rather silly and after four outings was put out of its – and indeed our – misery. It was not until the 21st century that he would return to the big screen, this time with a movie which picked up where Reeve's Superman II left off, but with a completely new cast and an enormous publicity campaign behind it. The movie proved a critical hit, but behind the scene wrangles over the rights to the movies meant it will not be until this year that he returns – this time re-booted. Man of Steel will go back to the start and introduce a whole new generation to the man who we always believed could have Batman and Spiderman in a fight.

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

It was one of the big Christmas hits, as Peter Jackson returned to Middle Earth after the huge success of his Lord of the Rings trilogy, to unveil the first of three movies based on JRR Tolkien's classic book. As much as there was great anticipation for The Hobbit, there was also considerable concern about stretching a reasonably modest book into three movies, each of three hours long. It would, it must be said, be almost quicker to read the book than watch the film. This will not stop the second instalment being an enormous hit however, and will signal the arrival of Christmas once more.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

The adventures of Katniss Everdeen were one of the literary success stories of recent years, with the trilogy making that rare leap out of its target, teenage, audience and delivering a broad Harry Potter-esque appeal across the age groups. The first movie was a big hit, the second will surely follow suit and see Jennifer Lawrence reprise her role as the heroine. The third movie will be hot on its heels.

AFTER EARTH

Director M Night Shyamalan started his career in such scintillating style, his each new effort carries with it a weight of expectation. Not to keep a run of non-stop hits going, but to try and return to some of the highs he reached with the double-whammy of the likes of Signs and Sixth Sense. It remains to be seen if After Earth will deliver that, but it's bound to be one which lures many in. The stars are the real-life father and son team of Will and Jaden Smith and is likely to be one of the sci-fi highlights of the year as it tells the story of the duo as they crash land back onto an abandoned planet Earth.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS

When JJ Abrams moved from hit TV show Lost to the big screen for a re-imagining of the Star Trek universe, it was released in 2009 to critical acclaim and was even a hit with the Trekkies. Rather than extending the storyline, it allowed us to see Kirk and Spock back in their prime and indulge in some nostalgia within the confines of a multi-million modern day movie budget. The second movie with the new cast – the majority of which are set to return – is likely to be one of the summer hits. There's also the chance to see Benedict Cumberbatch – better known for his fabulous BBC interpretation of Sherlock Holmes – as a baddie.

THE MONKEY KING

There's a chance this movie may not make the big screen until 2014, but when it does, the chances are it could be one of the big global hits. Based on the ancient Chinese tale of the Monkey King, Journey to the West – a tale anyone growing up in the 70s and 80s will be familiar with, courtesy of the Monkey TV series and more recently revisited as a musical by Blur frontman Damon Albarn – it began filming in 2010 and has seen its release already delayed. The latest rumour mill mutterings suggest it will emerge this year and could catapult this Hong Kong movie into a major international hit. Or, it could find itself an expensive flop. Either way, the marriage of ancient and modern will be worth a jaunt to see.

BUSINESS

KFRS

Automatic fire alarm reports BUSINESSES are being reminded that as of April this year, the way fire crews respond to emergency alarms being triggered will change. Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is reminding organisations with automatic fire alarms (AFAs) that from April 2013, any premises reporting an alarm sounding will be required to confirm to 999 staff that there is a fire, or signs of fire, before any firefighting response is sent. This policy, which was introduced in April 2012, is being extended to apply during the day and at night, and whether a call is received directly from the affected building, through a call handling organisation or some other method. The service has seen a significant reduction in the number of false alarms since it introduced the first phase of the change in April 2012, which affected calls to AFAs activated during daytime hours 6am to 6pm.

The spokesman for the fire service said: “A third of the total number of calls the service received were previously from automatic systems and over 98 per cent were false alarms. “Since we stopped attending these alarms during the day, on nearly 1,400 occasions fire engines were available for genuine emergencies rather than being out dealing with false alarms.* KFRS manager John Robertson said: “Since April 2012 we have been supporting building occupiers and ‘responsible persons’ to make sure they are aware of their legal responsibilities, the actions they can take to reduce unwanted calls from their AFA systems and how to confirm if there is a fire or signs of fire in the building before calling the fire service. “This phased approach gave premises an extra year to sort out night time arrangements for confirming a fire, and fire safety officers have been working with local businesses to support them in this change.”

New investment Job opportunities

CAFFYNS of Ashford has been representing Skoda in the town since 1999 and the partnership continues to go from strength to strength. Caffyns began its partnership with Skôda in Ashford at its Henwood Industrial Estate site. Back then Skôda offered just two cars in its model line-up, the Felicia and the then all new Octavia. The new Fabia was launched in 2000 to replace the ageing Felicia and the labour period for the rebirth of the brand was well and truly under way. With the introduction and incredible success of new models, including the Superb (2002), Roomster (2006), Yeti (2009), and the recently launched Citigo and Rapid (2012), Caffyns realised it would have to rethink its longterm strategy as they had now outgrown the present site. Work is due to begin shortly at Caffyns existing site on The

Boulevard, Orbital Motor Park, to build a state of the art Skoda dealership which will include a 10 car showroom and will double the size of its current aftersales service, repairs, parts and accessories departments. Caffyns is building in line with Skoda’s ‘Simply Grow’ strategy, which will make the location one of

the first dealers in the country to conform to the new manufacturer corporate identity standards. This is in preparation for the arrival of more new models leading up to 2015 and beyond. The new dealership has a planned date for completion of

June 2013. Jeremy Town, the general manager for the site, said “Skôda has been an incredible success story, which is now well into its second decade of consistent increase. As part of the VW Group, Skôda has always delivered on its long term strategy for planned growth. We have continually bucked the trend in a difficult economic climate and decreasing UK market, we have seen growth in both unit sales and market share. Many of our team were employed at our Henwood site when the partnership began, therefore their experience and knowledge of the brand has grown naturally with the business, which in turn means we can now offer our customers the best possible level of service. Skôda are looking for around 80,000 unit sales and a market share of 3.5% by 2016, building a new dealership will ensure we fulfil our obligation to the brand and make our customer experience worthy of their investment with us.
