Welcome Welcome to this January issue. It’s hard to believe we’re already on our 12th edition of mmm. Just one year ago we were starting out, trying to bring you a selection of features, fashion, business, and so much more, and we have been overwhelmed by the welcome we’ve received. I started out knowing the kind of high quality magazine I wanted to bring to you, but I couldn’t have achieved this without the help of my talented editor and the dedicated team at mmm who have supported me along the way. But even with their efforts, this magazine would be nothing if it wasn’t for the stunning area in which we live, and all the inspirational people. Before embarking on this journey I knew Kent had a lot to offer, but I’ve been amazed by just how talented our residents are. One year ago I had no idea how many Hollywood film stars had started their
journey to fame right here. And so far we’ve only encountered a few of the many more incredible people living in this beautiful county. This month we turn our focus to the dance floor, and the strictly stunning Ola and James Jordan, who have been wowing us on the ever popular BBC television show. This is the time of year that we all start thinking about making changes to our lives, and dancing could certainly be an option to help you lose weight, get fit and make some new friends along the way. Whatever your resolution, set yourself targets and deadlines as a way to help you meet your goal - if you’re really determined you can make, rather than break. If you believe in yourself, anything can be achieved. We discovered this 12 months ago with our resolution to publish this magazine. It’s been quite an adventure, but one we’ve found truly rewarding. If you set your mind to it, anything is possible. Here’s to a great 2013!

HEN it comes to revivals, perhaps the most surprising in recent years has been that of ballroom dancing. To trace its origins you have to go all the way back to the 16th century, but more recently it was the early 20th century which saw it become a mainstream past-time and it was a widely practised social activity, allowing men and women the chance to take their partners in their arms and dance together. But as cinema and then television started to change the social landscape, so the dance halls which once dominated began to die out. Come Dancing was a popular TV hit but when it began to lose its audience share, so it seemed ballroom dancing was finally on its way out. However, while television may once have been seen to nail shut its coffin, at the turn of the 21st century it was crowbarring the box open again and embracing it. The BBC's Strictly Come Dancing has reinvigorated the craze in this country, bringing its appeal back into the mainstream and catapulting ballroom dancing back into popular culture in a way that just 30 years ago, seemed unimaginable. Today, not only is it sexy again, but its star performers are once again darlings of the tabloid press, while in village halls around the country, the pleasure of moving around a room to music with your partner – and not in the sweaty confines of a club – is being discovered by a whole new generation. Little wonder, then, that James and Ola Jordan find themselves entering 2013 with a rather packed schedule ahead of them. Having both once again been among the line-up of sequin-
festooned professional dancers lining up for 2012's edition of the popular star-studded show, they are the living embodiment of the glamour and sheer sex appeal of modern-day ballroom dancing. This month they come fresh from the show to hitting the road for a gruelling two month tour, performing to packed arenas as part of the Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour – a jaunt which includes four shows at the O2 Arena in Greenwich and two at Wembley Arena. This is only the start of what is already shaping up to be a hugely busy year for the couple. a

aExplains Ola to mmm: “What with touring and teaching dance, the year is already looking very busy. “We tour, perform lots of special shows, and then of course there's Strictly. We start working on Strictly on the 1st August and that runs until Christmas. “Then in January and February we tend to go on tour and after that we put on our own shows through until the end of July so it is quite full on.” Ola partnered former Eastenders' star Sid Owen in the most recent series, while James was partner to Kent's very own Denise van Outen. When they take to the stage during the tour, while James will reunite with Denise, Ola will link up with Olympic star Louis Smith – it promises to be an eventful tour, and one Ola, who turned 30 last year with a glitzy birthday bash at a top Mayfair venue, is looking forward to. She explains: “Do I still love dancing? Of course I do. You have to. “I have stopped dancing professionally in competitions now, so it is the touring and the teaching which keeps me very busy.” For Ola, keeping busy is nothing new. She first discovered her talent for dancing at the tender age of 10 – a skill quickly spotted by a teacher who urged her a
aparents she should attend a dance school. Ola had been born Aleksandra Grabowska in Nasielsk, Poland, before growing up in Legionowo, near Warsaw. Explains Ola: “When I was young, I would watch dance programmes and think ‘that’s what I want to do’. So when my school advertised dance classes I really begged my mum to let me go for it.” By the time she was 12, Ola was dancing with Przemek Lowicki in Poland, and she shone on a wider stage when she came first in the Youth Closed Polish championships. In 1999, aged just 17, she won the Polish Championship before the pair competed in
the World Championships that November, finishing twelfth. The partnership ended shortly after the championships, however, and it was then that she would receive a phone call which would change her life and put her on the path to fame and fortune in the UK. James Jordan had been born in Gillingham in 1978 and grew up in the Medway Towns. His parents had both taught the formation team at Peggy Spencer's dance school in Penge – a team which appeared on the BBC's Come Dancing for several decades. But when they started a family, their dance careers were put on ice. Yet James was to be bitten by the bug. He began dancing when he
was 10 but quickly realised that some of those rhythmic genes had been passed down by his parents – although it did take a little convincing at first. He explains: “My sister Kelly started at group dance classes and a friend of mine also attended. I was pushed into going by my parents and at first it was a great laugh, I just went along for the fun and wasn't really that interested.” By the time he hit his teens he was beginning to make a name for himself in local competitions and by the time he turned 18 he was proving something of a hit. He remembers: “When I first started competing, I was eliminated very early. a Photographs © by the BBC
a“Suddenly,
when I was about 18, I was doing really well in the competitions and I noticed that girls became interested in me the more successful I became. It made me try even harder.” James was a major finalist in all Open International competitions for the Under 21's. He was ranked one of the best in the world and was flourishing in the competitions. Once he turned 21, James could no longer take part in youth competitions, so he decided to take a break from competing and he stopped dancing with his partner. “To be honest, I was fed up
mmm 15
with dancing for a while, and just wanted a break. I split with my partner, but earlier on at a competition, I had seen Ola dancing and thought she was absolutely amazing, even though she was only 15 years old. When I split with my partner I immediately thought of Ola.” So he placed that call. James travelled to Poland and the suspicion they would dance well together was immediately proved correct. A little over a month after meeting Ola moved to England. The next three years would seem them enjoy a rich vein
of form, winning competitions across the world, and off the dance floor things were hotting up too! In 2003 they married and promptly left Kent behind to teach Latin dance in Hong Kong for four years. But soon they longed for competition again, and they returned to start hitting the circuit. By the fourth season of Strictly Come Dancing, they were invited to join the line-up of professional dancers. The rest, as they say, is history. Certainly Strictly has proved a huge boost to their careers – and ensuringa

is a busy one. Ola has become an in-demand teacher, and combines it with being the face of fashion brands such as underwear brand Boux Avenue where her toned figure is the perfect platform for its range of sexy garments. But it is passing on her skills to another generation which delights her. She explains: “Yes, I am in demand, if people see you in TV they want to have lessons with you so it does help.” Quite how long her TV career will continue remains to be seen. The deal with the BBC is renewed each year.
“We're not tied to Strictly for a certain number of years. They will approach us each year about taking part in it again,” Ola says. And as ballroom dancing develops in popularity, there is a new breed of dancers, keen to make a name for themselves on prime-time TV. “I am sure there are lots of people who would love to do the show, but I don't feel there is a lot of competition,” Ola explains. “I'm sure lots of dancers would love to be on the show, but there is no bad feelings from those who are not. “When our time comes to no
longer be on the show, then we'll move over and someone else will take our place. “The exposure we get on by being on the television isn't essential to us. It is bonus, of course, the icing on the cake, I suppose. “But everyone on the show works well together. “It is disappointing if the celebrity you are working with gets knocked out a little early,” she says, alluding to her early departure from the recent series with Sid Owen. “But it's not always about who is the best dancer, it is often about who is popular and how people vote. It's not a Photographs © by the BBC

on the dancing.” For now, though, Ola spends her time in the UK and on the touring circuit. Her mother suffered a heart attack during the filming of the last series of Strictly, and it meant she had to jet out to Poland to visit. The good news, however, is that she's making a very good recovery. “She was taken very ill but the good thing is she is getting much better. “I would normally try and get to see her as often as I can during the year, but obviously given what happened I had to take some time off from the TV shows to go and visit her.” It seems 2013 will be no less intense than 2012 for the husband and wife team. But, as TV host Bruce Forstyth says, they are bound to 'keep dancing'. mmm

BESITY is a “hot” topic in the media and never more so than this time of year when many of us have been enjoying the festive period. Almost a quarter of adults in the UK are thought to be obese and some predictions suggest half of children will be obese or overweight by 2020, creating problems for the future 1. According to ‘The National Obesity Observatory’ there is now good evidence to show that adult obesity is associated with a wide range of health problems, including: • Joint strain, especially the knees and lower back • High blood pressure, which is a risk factor for coronary heart disease and strokes • Substantially increased risk of type 2 diabetes • Stress incontinence in women • Increased possibility of sleep apnoea Poor complexion can also become a factor with weight issues where
acne and skin infections can occur due to poor liver function and metabolism. Hannah Lacey, Dietician at the Spire Alexandra Hospital, adds “Obesity is a growing problem in the UK. It impacts on people’s health, increasing the risk of long term conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, some cancers and heart and liver disease. Following a healthy diet and exercise regime will help to prevent and control body weight while also ensuring that the body has all the essential nutrients it needs to function well.”
to what you're eating • Keep 'self-monitoring' to stay conscious of your new eating and activity habits 2 At Spire Alexandra Hospital, there is another option for people who want to lose weight but don’t want or qualify for more drastic measures like surgery. The Orbera™ balloon is a soft saline filled balloon that is placed in the stomach for up to six months and is suitable for patients with a BMI of between 27 and 35. The balloon is designed to partially fill the patients’ stomach, and aims to provide a feeling of fullness so that the patient feels less hungry and fuller more quickly. The balloon will not be suitable for all patients, but individual needs and treatment options will be discussed at the initial consultation. A published European clinical study (2005) of 2,515 patients using Orbera™ found the average weight loss after 6 months was 20kg 3. mmm
Maintaining Weight Loss • Continue to eat a balanced, lower fat diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables • Watch portion sizes and limit the amount of certain foods • Have three regular meals a day at regular times (starting with breakfast), and fewer snacks • Eat out occasionally, but limit fast food • Sit down to eat your meals, take time over them and pay attention

Travel tips from your Local Award Winning Travel Agency
Thinking of booking a Cruise?
Then come in to talk to us about your requirements, as cruises sell out fast. Especially if you are looking at booking a larger group and don’t want to leave anyone out! You get the best prices and choice of cabins when booking early. In each of our branches we have a cruise expert who will help you book the right cruise for you. n Why not upgrade, its well worth considering an upgrade as it doesn’t cost much more, i.e from an inside to an outside cabin, or an outside cabin to one with a balcony. It will seriously enhance your experience. n A packing essential: Always take a power strip with you as most cabins only have one outlet. You will then be able to charge your phone, ipad, camera, as well as use a hair dryer or electric razor! n And finally… beware of cheap excursions. Although there are many shore excursions cheaper booking through a local source, compared to the cruise line’s excursion desk, you may end up stranded or at the least taken advantage of. The cruise lines check out the companies they contract with, and you are much safer using one that is recommended by the cruise line or Baldwins Travel. n Call into your local Baldwins Travel office for further advice and information.

Add the brandy and Madeira and reduce by half. Put the game glaze, juniper berries, peppercorns and bay leaves into a liquidiser and blend. Add this to the onion mixture and reduce by two-thirds, leave to cool. In a large bowl mix the pigeon, venison, partridge, pheasant, pancetta lardons and the cooled onion mixture. Mix well and leave in the fridge for 24 hours. Weigh the mixture into 120g portions, roll into a ball and wrap each ball in one slice of parma ham.
Serves 12 Recipe by Eastwell Manor, Ashford
Cut 12 x 12cm discs and 12 x 15cm discs of puff pastry. Put a ball of the filling onto the middle of one of the smaller discs and brush all around the pastry with egg wash, place one of the larger discs on the top and seal all around the filling with your fingers, pushing the filling down a little so it is not round. Egg wash all over the pastry and leave to rest for an hour, then egg wash again and rest for another hour, then lightly score around the filling on each pie, but be careful not to go through the pastry. Then cut with a fluted cutter. Pre heat your oven to 180 degrees and put a metal baking tray in ten minutes before you need to cook your game pies. This is to make sure the base of your pie becomes nice and crispy instead of soggy! Cook for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Leave to rest for 3 or 4 minutes before serving. Serve with carrot puree, cepes, glazed button onions and game jus.

A Round of Golf with Fleming Himself
S
KYFALL was the number one smash hit of last year – but did you know the deep links between Kent and the creator of 007 agent James Bond? TOM WHITE examines author Ian Fleming's links with our county. When the tens of thousands of golf fans descend on Royal St George's for one of the world's foremost tournaments, The Open, few would have been aware of the course's role in one of histories all-time great literary creations. The sprawling links course snakes along the coast at Sandwich, its undulating holes liberally sprinkled with long grass and sand traps which make even the world's greatest players wince. They are one of the golfing world's great challenges – deep and steep
enough to see the careers of many ebb and die within their confines; like some sort of elaborate, drawn out death sequence, while a movie baddie delivers a lengthy soliloquy, a bit like a James Bond film. Ian Fleming, creator and author of the world's great agent, visited the course during the day of August 11, 1964. The author, journalist and former naval intelligence author was no stranger to east Kent and was a familiar sight. He loved its rolling countryside and its sweeping coastline. Some 30 years before, Fleming had started a routine which would see him book into the Guildford Hotel in Sandwich – now demolished - and then head to Royal St George's for a round of golf.
It would be one of a number of cases where real life inspired his fictional characters – in the classic book and later film, Goldfinger, the course would become 'Royal St Mark's'. It was a love affair with the area which would continue – peaking when he purchased the house White Cliffs in St Margaret's near Dover as a holiday home. The property had previously been owned by the legendary playwright Noel Coward and Fleming would refer to it as the first house in the UK courtesy of it being built at the foot of the cliffs. It was a retreat from his increasingly busy London lifestyle and allowed him to indulge uninterrupted in some of his best loved past-times; smoking, socialising and golf. a
aHe would often visit Pett Bottom,
a small hamlet south of Canterbury and sit in the Duck Inn. It would become the fictional home of a young James Bond following the death of his parents, and remains perhaps its biggest claim to fame. But on this fateful day, Ian Fleming was visiting friends at Royal St George's – as captain elect at one of the country's foremost courses, Fleming had proved himself a fine sportsman. In fact it was on the golf course he experienced his first episode of excruciating chest pain in 1949. He was just 41. A little over ten years later, as he sat in at a weekly news conference on the Sunday Times newspaper, where he worked, he
suffered a massive heart attack. He was still not quite 53. With a long history as a heavy smoker, and a family history of heart disease, the warning signs were certainly there. Indeed, he was unable to fully recover from that attack – and it slowed him down. Little wonder, then, he spent more time in the relaxing surrounds of east Kent. Bond – the fictional agent which had seen him become a literary hit – was put to one side. In the months leading up to this fateful day he visited Royal St George's he had been writing the story of a magical car he had told his young son, Casper. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang would become almost as loved as 007. But on August 11, 1964 the curtain would come down on a
remarkable life. After having both lunch and dinner with friends at the golf course, he collapsed shortly after the meal. It was another heart attack. This time he would not recover. According to legend, his last words were an apology to the ambulance drivers who were summoned to rush him to hospital. He would die in the early hours of the following morning. To add to the tragedy, his death was on the 12th birthday of his son Casper. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was published two months after his death. Tragically, his son died following a drug overdose a little over 10 years later, at the age of just 23. a

a The James Bond books, the Man
with the Golden Gun and a volume containing the short stories, Octopussy and The Living Daylights, would be published after his death. Between 1953 and 1966 – the date the final book was published – 12 Bond novels would be penned and two collections of short stories. They would provide the backbone of one of the greatest fictional characters ever created. Ian Fleming may have died on that day – but his literary creations would continue to live on in the hearts of millions. And all sprinkled with some magic from Kent. mmm

Jacksons Fencing news, topical treats and more... 2013 is here - Happy New Year to you all from everyone at Jacksons! Here’s hoping the new year sees an upturn in the economy and an improvement in the weird weather that has been bringing misery to all parts of the country.
I
’d like to tell you a little bit about Jacksons - We’ve been around since 1947. In fact, last year was our 65th anniversary and throughout the whole of 2012 we had monthly giveaways to reward our customers; prizes included tickets to Hampton Court, High Street vouchers and hampers, with winners being picked at random from the previous months’ orders. It has been very enjoyable contacting people to tell them they have won, when they aren’t expecting a thing! We also held some special events to celebrate and a timeline was created on the website, showing how we developed from our inception by Ian Jackson and his father selling fencing stakes to local farmers to a business with fencing
centres in Kent, Bath and Chester areas, effectively covering the whole of the country from these key places. If you log on to your local page jacksonsfencing.co.uk/ashfordlocal there’s lots more info and links to the timeline too, with great photos of times gone-by. 2012 also saw the launch of a new range of products: Jacksons Equestrian Solutions, a range of premium stables and field shelters. True to Jacksons pedigree our stables are constructed from Jakcure treated timber which comes with the unique 25 year guarantee - no other stable on the market can offer this (there’s a handy link to the new range on your local page).
Any Garden Designers/ Landscape professionals out there? We are holding our 4th Annual Garden Design Competition - some of you may already know about this national competition where the prize is to have
your design built - full details about the last three year’s winners and on how to enter can be found on your local page - and a reminder about the free prize draw that’s still running until the end of January.

Land Agents
M
AIDSTONE BC has made a dramatic change of tack regarding its Core Strategy. It has now accepted that its proposed provision of 10,080 dwellings for the period 2006-2026 is inadequate, especially as the government’s latest household projections forecast the creation of 16,000 new households in the same period. Whilst the Council has not decided
upon a new figure, it will probably be a further 2,000 dwellings – and possibly more. The Council has therefore issued a new “call for sites”. Any landowner who wants his land considered for housing or employment use therefore needs to submit details of his landholding by 20th January. The Council will then go through these, deciding which are acceptable, or at least which deserve further consideration.
Furthermore, Maidstone is not now going to produce a Core Strategy (which would have only given a general indication as to where development was to take place) but instead will produce an old-style Local Plan, in which sites for residential and other specified uses will be allocated. It is aiming to publish a draft Local Plan for consultation in the autumn of 2013. Chapel Place Limited would be pleased to assist any landowners if they have an opportunity that they would like the Borough Council to consider and would urge anyone to contact them without delay as the deadline is not far away.

Ford Fiesta
Arrival of the new Ford Fiesta IF there is one guaranteed hit for 2013, then it must surely be the new look Ford Fiesta. Already one of the UK's most popular small cars, the tweaked version arrives this month and is looking to capitalise on the trend of downsizing. With a stylish exterior, it certainly looks the part, and many will feel more than comfortable plumping for a brand with such a pedigree. According to the pre-release hype, its new face is “dominated by a trapezoidal front grille, and bracketed by laser-cut headlamps with daytime running lamps that use LED technology”. What's more there's a “powerdome” bonnet design and is offered with 17in alloy wheels. The new Fiesta is available in a range of vibrant and dynamic colours, including new Copper Pulse, Hot Mustard and Candy Blue. And if that's not enough for you, Ford has relocated electric window switches, heated seat switches and interior door handles. A full leather-rim steering wheel is offered for the first time and a new five inch central colour display supports the model’s first integrated navigation system. It all sounds rather enticing, and Ford will be hoping new seat
fabrics, designs and trims will ensure it captures a healthy slice on a fiercely competitive market. But perhaps its cleverest touch is a multi-lingual SYNC Emergency Assistance gizmo which can alert local emergency services operators in 26 languages spoken in 40 European regions. It hopes it will ease the concerns of motorists who are hitting the Continent's roads, by whose grasp of the local lingo doesn't extend to describing motoring problems. With a variety of different models and specs, expect the Ford Fiesta to challenge, once more, to be the dominant player in the small car sector.

Subaru
Launch of the Forester SUBARU will be hoping the summer arrives with a spring in its step as it prepares for the release of its all-new Forester later this year. Due to arrive on forecourts in the summer, it is hoping a combination of competitive pricing and improved fuel economy, will allow it to make inroads in the SUV sector. The fourth generation Subaru Forester builds upon the outgoing model with improved performance,
safety and efficiency and a larger, more practical cabin. Confirming the UK launch of the Forester, Subaru has also announced outline details of the engine line-up, which will include 150ps 2.0-litre Boxer diesel and petrol units, as well as a new 2.0-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine, producing 280ps. Both of the naturallyaspirated engines will feature a six-speed manual transmission as standard,
while Subaru’s Lineartronic (CVT) transmission is available on both petrol engines. The Lineartronic transmission has been modified to manage the increased power while also providing improved fuel efficiency, and ensures that both CVT-equipped petrol engines achieve the 2015 Japanese fuel economy standard. Full details and prices are expected early this year.

Kia
Arrival of the Proceed GT IF you can challenge your preconceptions and forget some of the rather lack lustre designs of models gone by, the average Kia showroom is shaping up to be a rather modern, good looking place. And that is going to be greatly enhanced later this year when
the Kia Proceed GT drives on to forecourts and gets tongues wagging. The brand's first ever hot hatch is designed to reflect Kia's sportiness and “fun to drive positioning. It may not be to everyone's taste, but with a 1.6-litre turbocharged GDI engine with six-speed manual transmission, and based on the all-new Proceed, which had
its global debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, it's likely to make a splash. Kia has struggled in the past – it's new line-up could go an awful long way to establishing it as a make to reconsider. The new Proceed arrives in the spring, while the GT should be spotted on the road in the second half of the year. Prices and full specifications have yet to be released.

Port of Dover
FSA business agreement A DEAL to take over the Freight Services Agency (FSA) business at the Port of Dover has been signed and sealed in a move Dover Harbour Board describes as boosting business opportunities. Freight services provider Motis Ireland Ltd completed and exchanged contracts at the end of last year. Bob Goldfield, chief executive at the Port of Dover, the main gateway to Europe from the
county, said: “The deal has all been about delivering new opportunities for the business, adding value and securing its long-term future. “This has to be good news for staff, our ferry customers, the community, and with the prospect of a lorry park, the county as a whole.” Paul King, finance director of Motis, said: “We look forward to operating and developing a thriving business, supporting the local economy and the ability of the port to provide world-class services to its customers.” Dover District Council welcomed
the announcement, stating that the future prosperity of the port is vital to the health of the local economy. Council leader Paul Watkins added: "The port is the major employment site in Dover and must continue to prosper. “Furthermore, with the shortage of appropriate lorry parking facilities in the county, the creation of a lorry park will be of great benefit to both Dover and Kent in offering suitable provision, keeping Dover's streets clear of lorries and thereby helping to create the right environment for attracting much needed inward investment."

The airport in Thanet will fly twicedaily to Schiphol in Amsterdam. The Dutch airport is a hub, allowing onward flights to more than 130 destinations worldwide. It is hoped the service, to be operated by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, will provide a genuine rival to travellers across the county who otherwise have to face a trek around the M25 to either Gatwick, Heathrow or city airports. And the news is a huge boost to Manston, which is looking to re-establish itself as a contender ahead of a major review of aviation policy in the south-east and discussions over a possible multi-billion pound airport in the Thames Estuary. Owner Infratil currently has the airport on the market and the KLM deal will certainly act as a
Kent Cricket Club Review of finances
KENT County Cricket Club has found itself on a sticky wicket after a year in which the weather and economy bowled its finances a googly. The club, whose headquarters are in Canterbury, is expecting to deliver “disappointing” financial figures this month, with a major review of its finances under way. At the time of writing, redundancies among its administrative staff had not been ruled out. It comes at the end of a period of considerable change for a club so steeped in history. Its St Lawrence Ground has seen
sweetener to any possible sale. The flights to Schiphol will take just under an hour and use Fokker 70 jets carrying up to 80 passengers. Tickets went on sale in November, starting from £99 return. Henri Hourcade, general manager for Air France/KLM in the UK, said: “Demand for efficient and convenient schedules to long-haul destinations from the UK continues to grow, to emerging markets in Latin America, Africa and the Far East, but equally to established markets such as North America. By connecting the UK regions to worldwide destinations, KLM is
offering more choice to holidaymakers, but equally adding to the infrastructure for regional UK businesses.” Charles Buchanan, chief executive at Manston Airport, said: “The new services will be a real benefit to Kent and its residents. Passengers will be able to arrive at Manston, park adjacent to the terminal building, check in and be on the flight to Amsterdam within minutes, a hassle-free experience that makes travelling a pleasure. Passengers from Manston can leave home without the worries of road congestion or excessive flight delays affecting their journey.”
considerable redevelopment, with new stands and even a convenience store opening as it
stood on the site. However, the gloomy economic picture put paid to hopes of a hotel, which would have also allowed for the staging of conferences, at least for the time being. Club officials insist they are confident of moving in the right direction and blame the appalling summer weather for blowing a hole in their economic outlook. A particular casualty was Tunbridge Wells Cricket Week. The weather put paid to the action at the Nevill Ground and with it £50,000 of vital expected revenues. The financial blow comes after last year's figures revealed better than expected positive figures, suggesting the club had turned the corner.

If you embark on 2013 with a view to injecting a little glamour and some old-fashioned class into your life, then the best place to consider making a jaunt is the home of 'Glorious Goodwood'

HE sprawling 12,000acre estate near Chichester in West Sussex has become one of the essential venues during the course of the year for those wanting to experience something a little, well sophisticated. and cream. It peaks with the Glorious Goodwood meeting in July – an event which draws in 100,000 people to mingle with the great and the good and admire the speed and spectacle of horse and jockey, plus music and dance. And if the horses still leave you clamouring for more speed, then the Festival of Speed attracts some of the biggest names from the world of motorsport. Billed as the 'largest motoring
garden party in the world' it aims to deliver a unique summer weekend blending cars, stars and motorsport 'royalty', all held in the grounds of Goodwood. It dovetails with the Goodwood Revival – now the world's most popular historic race meeting, which regularly draws in crowds that merge into six figure sums. Goodwood is devoted to the era of motorsport of the 1940s, 50s and 60s and offers the opportunity to “leave the modern world behind”
and witness some open-wheel racing by the likes of legends Sir Stirling Moss and John Surtees – the man who won world titles on both two and four wheels and a regular and very popular face at Kent race circuit Brands Hatch. At the heart of the operation is the Earl of March – a man who took over the running of the Goodwood estate from his father in the 1990s and has since transformed it into a multimillion pound, round-the-clock operation. Today it boasts a horse
racing track, motorsport circuit, hotel, 3,000-acre organic farm, golf courses, cricket pitch and even a fleet of vintage airplanes as well. Charles Henry Gordon Lennox, to give him his full title, turned 58 earlier this month. As heir to the 10th Duke of Richmond, the Eton-educated sophisticate has put Goodwood top of the social calendar. He was recently the subject of a Channel 4 show The Aristocrats – Goodwood, a show in which hea
a came across as both affable and down-to-earth. Which is good to hear for those keen to take a trip to his families estate to see just what all the fuss is about. He explains: “The most important thing is that the estate is kept for the family and the community. “Everything we make from the various event is ploughed back into the business. “We're trying to maintain the existence of the place.” Born in 1955, the Earl of March took over the management of the Goodwood Estate Company from his father in 1994. He is the president of the British Automobile Racing Club, patron of the TT Riders Association, and president
of the Motor Racing Cycle Industry Association. He is the founder of the Goodwood Festival of Speed and has re’opened the Goodwood Motor Circuit. He inherited his love of motor racing from his grandfather, the 9th Duke, who was a successful designer and driver in the 1930s. Prior to turning his full-time attention to the estate, the Earl of March was previously a very well-known London advertising photographer under the name of Charles Settrington. In addition to racing, in 2010 he organised the first ever celebration of British design, music and fashion festival, Vintage at Goodwood. mmm
