o here we are! 201 8 has dawned and what a fabulous edition we have for you to ease into the new year in style. After all the fun and festivities of Christmas, January provides us with the exhilarating sensation of a whole year stretching ahead of us fu ll of potential. ever has there been a better time to get inspired to enrich your life and the lives of those around you. If you want to make your dreams come true and fu lfil your ambitions, then there's never been a better moment to start turning them into reality. Creating HtHtHt was a dream I had, and w ith a lot of hard work- and the help of those who bought into the concept - we made it something which I know so many of you enjoy each month. In fact, it was this time six years ago we were just preparing to launch our first edition. What an exciting, and busy, that time was! I cannot express how grateful I am for all those who have played a part in its success so far especially those who have worked so hard on this edition. We have a great team and I'm very proud of everyone involved. The good news is that we are not resting on our laurels and have plenty of exciting things up our sleeves for 201 8 - keep picking us up every month to see them unfold as the year progresses. Inside this edition, in addition to our normal regulars of fashion, trave l, technology and history, we feature Deborah Meaden. She may be best known for being one of the stern panel on Dragons' Den, but her story is one we should all seek to repli cate. By hard work, enjoyi ng what she does, and steely determination, she has created a business empire which gives her enormous satisfaction. Most significa ntl y, she has reached the point where she can determine how she lives her life. What a liberating experience that must be. We rnay, of cou rse, not all be businessminded, but January gives us a chance to look within our very souls and seek to del iver what we all need for the year ahead - and plot a route to achieve it. By finding the real you, the possib ilities are endless. So I hope you enjoy th is new year's edition of HtHtHt - and look forward to seeing you next month.

\ \'I~H --:At !\11 Y & FRI~"JDS Most of us are caught up in a hectic w hirlwind of activities which start on Monday morning, end on Sunday night, and then begin all over again. Time sl ips by as we rush to complete urgent tasks as a result of juggling jobs, running the household, chauffeuring our children, parents, relatives and spouses to work, school, appointments and elsewhere. Yet we al l acknow ledge that spending quality time together, as at Christmas, is the best way to show each other we care. NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS [

Some famil ies make time by organising hol idays together, allowing them to get away from day-to-day distractions and build new experiences together. However, w hi le this is a great option, daily habits can make a much bigger difference to your fami ly relationships than 'once-in-a-lifetime' events. And specifical ly tailoring your daily interactions w ith d ifferent members of your fam ily can be a very effective way to relate to them on a one-on-one basis.

We put on weight when the amount of calories we eat exceeds the amount of calories we burn through normal everyday activities and exercise. So the only way to lose weight hea lthil y and keep it off is to make permanent changes to the way you eat and exercise. A few small alterations, such as eating less and choosing drinks that are lower in fat, suga r and alcohol, can help you shed those pesky pounds. There are also plenty of ways to make physical activity part of your life. If you are overweight, aim to lose about 5-10% of your starting weight by losing 0.5-1 kg (1-21b) a week. You should be able to lose this amount if you eat about 500 to 600 fewer calories than you need a day. An average man needs about 2,500 calories a day and an average woman about 2,000 calories to stay the same weight. If you need more help, the HS is offering a free guide: www.nhs.uk

If you're currently repaying the minimum amount on your debts each month, it may take you severa l years, maybe even decades, to fina lly clear them. To pay them off faster, you need to increase the payment to at least one of your accounts. So compile a monthly budget to work out how much can afford to pay. Total your income from all reliable sources, including wages, ch ild support, alimony, dividends, bonuses, or even pensions. Then subtract w hat you spend on vital expenses, such as mortgage payments, rent, uti Iities,

Wa lking is underrated as a form of exercise, but it's one of the easiest ways to get more activity into your day, lose weight and become healthier. Research shows that people who fit moderate activity, such as walking, into their daily life burn more energy than those who make weekly visits to the gym. Even better (and a bit more fun), rediscover the invigorating and liberating experience of riding a bike and boost your health in the process. Figures show that about 42 per cent of Britons own a bicycle. Whether you're cycling to work, to school, to the shops or just for fun, the humble bicycle is an easy way to get more active. No one li kes taking the stairs. That's why man invented lifts! But if you're looking for an easy way to add more activity into your day, stridin g up the steps is a no-brainer. Stair-climbing burns more calories per minute than jogging and counts towa rds your recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise.

food, transportation, medical costs and those rn in i rn urn debt repayments. Don't forget to account for any irregular or periodic expenses that may also crop up. There are always some of those! What's left is the amou nt you can use to pay down debt, and the experts always tell you to pay extra w henever you can. The more you pay, the faster you can have it all paid off completely. You can also get creative in think ing of good ways to cut back on living costs and boost you r income. Find more tips on finance at: www.thebalance.com

Fighting an addiction (many people are addicted and don't even know it) A wish to lose weight A desire to lead a healthier life Fighting illness and disease Sick of drinking (my main reason) A good way to save money These are just a handful of the things that motivate people to stop drinking, have a break, or just cut back the amount they consume. If you think about it, organising your house or room is bas ically putting things in logical places so they can be found easily when needed. And organising your time is similar. Just work out how many hours or minutes can be allocated to tasks, events and other things in your busy life - and be realistic, al lowing time for the unexpected, too. There's nothing worse than rushing to get to that imporant wedding, party or appointment on ly to sp lash coffee down you r dress on the way out! Oh yes, we all know it happens. If you are not properly organised, you risk ending up a mess in many other ways, too. Do I feel fulfilled in this role? Does my resume need an update? Have I learnt something new from my manager? Is there a team within the organisation where I would feel more supported and/or challenged? Is this a positive and motivating environment? What could help me hit my goals? It's a real treat to enjoy a spot of persona l ca re, such as a fac ial, manicure or pedicu re, or one of the huge variety of massages avai lab le today. But w hat type of spa? A day spa is different from a beauty salon in that it has additional fac ilities, such as a sauna, sw imm ing pool, stea m room or w hirlpool

that guests may use, probably before their treatments. It is also different from a dest ination spa, as there is no overnight accommodation. In contrast, a desti nation spa offers si m ilar servi ces integrated into packages w hich include di et, exerc ise, wel lness tips, life coaching, yoga, Tai Chi and rooms w here you can stay. TOWlE'SJESSICA WRIGHT - THE ONLY WAY IS HOME FITNESS!

HOW ONE MUM WENT FROM RAGS (WELL ALMOST) TO RICHES WITH A REVOLUTIONARY DIET PLAN For something more food-related, with a heartrending back story, this diet was born out of an ordinary mum's despair over her huge weight after having chi ldren and suffering a personal tragedy. ow it is said to have helped men and women across the globe shed their excess pounds and become heather and happier, too and all by making just a few, simple lifestyle choices. The three-stage eating regime was designed by mum-of-four TerriAnn Nunns, who had tried every diet going but couldn't find one that su ited her, a fact that made her even more miserab le. In 2011, she found herself hitting rock bottom and spi rall ing out of control in a vicious cycle of comfort eating and guilt. With her life fal ling apart, she knew she needed to tackle her weight problem head on . Over five months, she used knowledge amassed from other diet plans, tested different food varieties, and added and removed food groups, unti l she finally began to sl im down without feeling hungry something that was vital when running a home and working ful l-time. In the end, she lost several stone! By posting her weight loss photos on soc ial med ia, TerriAnn soon had friends asking how she had managed such an amazing transformation, so she began to share her secrets. Soon she was inundated with requests from strangers desperate to hear her tips, and so the TerriAnn 123 Diet Plan was born. ow not on ly does she look great, she is reaping rich financia l rewards, too ... and couldn't be happier! The plan is available at a cost of ÂŁ19.99 from

The dragon who BREATHES SUCCESS DEBORAH MEADEN IS ONE OF THE BEST-KNOWN BUSINESSWOMEN IN THE UKAND HAS INVESTED MORE THAN £3M IN THOSE ENTERING THE FEARED DEN ... here is a company in Maidstone which owes a lot to Deborah Meaden. For them she is much more than the rather stern investor we see on Dragons' Den - the long-runn ing and hugely popu lar BBC TV show. A regular on the panel since 2006, she has ploughed more than £3.3 million into dozens of proj ects during her time on the show. And among them is Synchbox, a firm based in the county town which specia lises in hidden wiring and adaptor sockets. They presented to the intimidating panel - and ca me away with a hefty £55,000 investment. For Deborah, the sum was perhaps a drop in the ocean. Her estimated net wo rth is a staggering £40 milli on. But she demonstrates a passion for business w hich should give hope to all those entrepreneurs out there looking to start the new year with a (res h idea and the desire to succeed. And the TV show has shot her to a fame few business fo lk ca n imagine - including an appeara nce in 201 3 on Str ictly Come Dancing, and appearances on panel shows such as Would I Li e To You?, and even the revered Question Time.

T

Approaching her 59th birthday next month, Deborah lives in a restored farm in Somerset. It's a county she's fami liar with, having been born there. But her parents divorced when she was young and her mother moved the family Deborah and her older sister Gail - to Essex, though not before the young dragon had got her first taste of paid emp loyment - leading pony rides along Minehead seafront w hen she was just eight years old. " It was a streak of determination and independence which would put her in good stead going forward. "My parents sp li t up when I was tiny," she exp lains, "and there was a time when my mother was on her own before she met my beloved stepfather, so she didn 't have the luxury of thinking deeply about things. "But she is a person who won't be beaten - she just got on and did it, and that must have rubbed off on me. "As a chi ld, I won a schola rship to Trinity Co llege School of Musi c as a pi anist at the time I believe I was the youngest eve r. "Un(ortu nately, I went from a child prodigy to med iocre within a matter of years. It changed from being something I loved and chose to do to something that was very structured and time-consuming. "Somehow I felt boxed in and just switched off.

There's definitely a more fun side to me than people see on Dragons' Den - you have to remember that I'm there to invest my own money, which can be quite sobering

" I started my first business at 19, importing beautiful Italian ceram ics. Maybe the innocence and energy of youth helped, but I just jumped in with both feet and learned through my mistakes." It didn't all go smooth ly, however, and some lessons were tougher than others. The business- which was sel ling to such prestigious retai lers as Harvey ichols among others collapsed after 1 8 months. "I consider it a failure to slog on with a business that is going to die sooner rather than later," she reflects, "and that's a skill I've had from my very, very early days. " It's very difficult to realise that you're not going to make any money out of somethi ng. A lot of people are blinded. They think: 'I can't give this up. I'd feel like a failure'." Refusing to be put off by her initial stumble, Deborah invested in a textile franchise in the UK - sel ling out to her partner two years later and pocketing ÂŁ10,000. She then dabbled in a string of leisure and retai l ventures, and in 1988 joined her family's business running amusement arcades. " I took over the family hol iday business and made it such a success that when I sold it I really did have money," she says. The next step was joining Weststar Holidays, a Devon-based holiday park operator. It was in the summer of 1985 that Deborah met the man who was eventua lly to become her husband, Paul. But, like her business career, it was not a success from the start. They separated before tying the knot as she didn't want a family. But after returning from a holiday abroad, the two patched up their differences - finally marrying in 1993. In 1999, Deborah led a management buyout at Weststar and acquired the majority shareholding. When she eventually ceased her involvement in the firm, she walked away with a stake that pocketed her a cool ÂŁ19 million - and the abil ity to do what she pleased. A host of other projects followed - including buying a texti le mill in Somerset and lau nching The Merchant Fox, an online British-made luxury goods store. " It wasn't really until my 30s that I discovered what made me happy - and what didn't," she says. "When I first had money I spent it on loads of stuff, and then I stopped and thought: 'That really hasn 't done it for me. It's just not w hat I want out of life' . " I decided I wasn't going to become a different person because I was ri ch. I rea lised that if you are not careful, money can stifle you, and that money has very little value in itself. "With that understanding came a sense of real confidence. It allowed me to see that what real ly matters is being in control of all aspects of life - never being influenced or behaving in a certain way simply because it's what others expect. " I learned I could say: ' I don't care what you think of me'. That's a very powerfu I

Detoxifying FRUIT & VEGETABLES FABULOUS PRODUCE TO GIVE YOU AN INNER MAKEOVER AFTER THE NAUGHTY TREATS OF THE FESTIVE SEASON - AND PERK YOU RIGHT UP!

CABBAGE Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage get regu lar attention in health news thanks to their anti-cancer properties. Perhaps this is because they help the body's natural detox systems perform the way th ey should. M ak ing a cabbage soup is a tasty way to inc lude ca bbage on yo ur detox.

CELERY Celery may not be loved by everyone, but it is an alkalizing vegetable that w ill help reduce inflammation and supports a healthy nervous system. Be sure to leave on the leaves to get extra v itamins. One of the best ways to use ce lery on a detox is to juice it, especia lly if you don't care for the taste or texture of whole plant.

FENNEL

------,----.--.--,--J

l11e diuretic properties o (part of the carrot fami ly, believe it or not) make it a good addition to your detox as it w ill help w ith the removal of toxi ns. It's also a good sou rce of minerals, and is an antiinflammatory. Fennel can be added into a detox smoothie or used as a sa lad topping. FRUIT AND V EGETABLES I[

"'"'"' 85

KAL[ Kale can be counted on as a vegetable that w ill help you r considerably in remov ing those toxins. It contains vitamins A and C, fibre, and even plant protein. It's also a good source of minera ls and can be used as an ingredient in a green detox smoothie.

MUSHROOMS The support given to your immune system by the consumption of mushrooms is enough to include them on your shopping list of detox foods. Your immune system is constantly trying to make you the hea lth iest you can be, and by helping it out you're helping you r overall health. So make room for those mushrooms - but be sure to pick the right ones if you go out into the w ilds foraging ... you don't want to add to the poisons you are seeking to flush out.

o~As

Don't let their small size fool you, those little peas pack a powerfu l nutritional punch and are a welcome addition to any serious detox programme. They contain both fibre and protein as well as an tioxidant. The fibre w ill help keep you regu lar and the protein wil l help you feel satiated between meals. So despite their size they are a good filler. And you don't have to eat them hot, they make a fun addition to a sa lad. •

l FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

SEA' 1\/EED The understandably salty ocean foli age is an important detox aid because of the large amount of chlorophyll and iodine it contains. Iodine supports a sluggish thyroid, and you'll want your thyroid fully functioning while you get rid of those toxi ns. Getting iodine from a natural source like kelp is preferable over synthetic supplements.

SWEET POTATOES Sweet potatoes are a nourishing food that will help you feel full and satisfied w hile on removing those undesirable substances from your body, w hile at the same time su pporting you w ith fibre and beta-Carotene. The body converts this plant pigment to Vitami n A, and goes to work as an effective antioxidant.

TOMATOES You r I iver takes a lot of abuse in o ur modern worl d, and the lycopene in tomatoes helps to protect it from damage so it can do its job of filter ing out toxins. For more lycopene, go w ith cherry tomatoes or cooked tomatoes to release more of the pigment that has been described as having 'a laundry list of amazing benefits'. W hat's not to love?

JOBS TO DO IN JANUARY

Prepare for a new growing year JANUARY MIGHT BE THE MIDDLE OF WINTERBUT AS THE DAYS LE GTHEN THE GARDEN STARTS GROWING

-.c \VING AND PLANTING Fruit

Plant bare-root trees and bushes, as long as the soi I isn't frozen.

Vegetables Sow broad beans in pots in mil d areas, placing them in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Sow seed indoors for early crops e.g. lettuces, summer b rassicas (such as cabbages and ca uliflowers) , spinach, salad onions and turnips.

And sow onion seed in a heated propagator.

tJRU"\J NG f\NI) fRAINI~G Fruit

Look out for grey mou ld and downy mildew on brassicas.

Prune apples, pears, quinces and medlars.

Remove all remaining p lant debris from the vegetable p lot.

Prune currants and gooseberries.

Do not compost any diseased materia l, such as blight- infected potatoes, onions suffering from wh ite rot and any crops w ith ru st.

Prune autumn raspberri es.

Problems Place mice controls near stored vegetables.

Burn or bin the diseased material.

Protect early seed sowings from slugs.

Spray against peach leaf curl.

Protect brassicas fro m pigeons.

Check apples for canker and prune out.

Now's a great time to prune currants and gooseberries - especially new bushes or cordons

GENERAL CARE Fruit

Keep checking stored fruits and remove rotten ones. Ensure tree stakes and ties are firm and sound.

Harvest citru s fruits once mature. Lower indoor grapevine stems for even bud-break. Apply winter washes to fruit trees and bushes.

Apply a top dressing of sulphate of potash to all fruits and nuts.

Vegetables Stake or earth up Brussels sprouts stalks that look leggy and vulnerable to wind rock.

Pick the biggest sprouts from low down the stalks first. Source your seed potatoes.

Force chicory to produ ce plump leafy heads. GORGEOUS GARDENS[

Cultivate and prepare seed beds, covering them with clear p olythene, cloches or fleece to warm the soil before sowing. If the weather is reliably dry and frosty, leave heavy soils exposed - frosts will kill p ests and improve soil structure b y the continual freezing and thawing of soil water.

Improve drainage of heavy soils by working in lots of organic matter. Grit w ill only be effective when used in conjunction with organic matter. When ga rdening on wet soils, work from a plank of wood, rather than treading on the bed, to avoid compacting the soil.

Save egg boxes, as they w ill come in handy for potato chitting next month. Plan a rotation system for vegetable plots to ensure the same crops are not grown in th e same beds year after year to help prevent disease build-up .

Put out food for birds and leave some garden areas uncut a I ittle longer, to provide shelter fo r wildlife in your garden

Right from the start, the KONA offers the choice between two turbocharged, smal l-displacement petrol powertrains with high low-end torque and excellent fuel efficiency. The optional four-wheel drive of the KO A supports drivers in all kinds of driving situations with up to 50% torque at the rear wheels e.g. on snow, gravel and of course on regu lar road surfaces. he new Audi A8 makes its world debut. In its fourth generation, the flagship model again sets the benchmark for Vorsprung durch Technik with a new design language, an innovative touchscreen operating concept and systematic drivetrain electrification. The Audi A8 is also the first production car in the world to have been developed for highly automated driving. From 2018, Audi will gradually be taking piloted driving functions such as parking pi lot, garage pilot and traffic jam pilot into production.

T

DOYEN OF STYLE: THE EXTERIOR DESIGN The new Audi A8 is styl istically defining - it signals the beginning of a new design era for the entire brand. The front end w ith its w ide, upright singleframe grille and the fluid, muscular body convey power; elegance, sophistication and modernity, and deliver on the promise made by the Audi prologue design study. ll1e

luxury sa loon makes a suitably emphatic statement w hether in 5.17-metre 'standard' form or as the A8 L, which has a 13 centimetre longer wheelbase. The Audi brand is renowned worldwide fo r consistent innovation in design and eng inee ring, for lightweight construction and fo r quattro permanent all-wheel drive and every facet of the new A8 reflects these values. The balanced proportions emphasise all four wheels in equa l measure, and the muscular definition above the w heel arches gives v isual express ion to the quattro drive. Viewed side-on, the upright front end combined with the gently inclined rear create visual tens ion which is intensified, particularly at night, by th e stri king HD Matrix LED headl ights w ith Audi laser lighting, and the LED light strip combined w it h O LEO technology at the rear. These produce unique light animations as the driver approaches and leaves the car. li MOTORS REVIEW

Continued from p.1ge 119

LUXURY FROM HEADTO-TOE:THE INTERIOR Space is often considered to be the ultimate luxury, and compared to its predecessor the new A8 has grown substantially in length in both body styles. Occupants can also now relax in even more sublime surround ings, with every detail radiating superla tive bespoke quality- from the perforation in the seat upho lstery to the electrically opening and closing shutters on the air vents. TI1e most sought-after seat in the new Audi flagship model could quite possibly be the rear left - the optional relaxation seat in the A8 L that comes with four different adj ustment options and a footrest. In this seat, the passenger can warm and massage the soles of their feet on a unit with multiple settings incorporated into the back of the front-passenger seat. The new comfort head restraints complete the experience. Rear passengers can also contro l an array of functions such as ambient lighting, the new H D Matri x reading lights and seat massage, and can make private phone ca lls v ia a separate operating unit.

FINGERTIP RESPONSE: THE CONTROLS The luxury sa loon's interi or deli berately adopts a reductive design; the interior architecture is clea r and with a strictly horizontal orientation. Aud i carries its high quality standa rds into the d igita l age wi th a radically new operati ng concept. It d ispenses with the fam il iar rotary pushbutton and touchpad of the predecessor model in favou r of an instrument panel w hich is largely free of buttons and switches. At its cent re is a 1 0. 1- inch touchscreen display wh ich, w hen off, b lends almost inv isib ly into the high-gloss b lack surround thanks to its b lack-panel look. TI1e user interface appears as soon as the car is opened. TI1e driver contro ls the Infotainment system w ith a fingertip on the large display. He or she can use a second touchscreen d isplay on the centre tunnel console to access the air conditioning and comfort functions as well as ma ke text inputs. W hen the driver activates a function in the upper or lower display, a click is heard and felt by way of confirmation. The glass-look operating buttons respond in the same way. The combi nation of acoustic and tactile feedback along w ith

MOTORS REVIEW![

the use of common to uch gestures such as swiping make the new M M I touch response especially safe, intuitive and quick to use. The A8 can also engage in intell igent conversation. The d river can activate an array of functions using a new, natural form of voice con trol. Information on destinations and media is either available on board or is delivered from the cloud at LTE speed. TI1e extensive Aud i connect range also includes traffic sign recognit ion and hazard information - innovative car-to-X services that d raw on the swarm intell igence of the Audi fleet. The navigation system has also evolved in line w ith the car w hich houses it: It is self- learning, based on the route just driven. This provides the driver with intell igent search suggestions. The map also incorporates highly detailed 30 models of major Eu ropean cities.

WORLD PREMIERE: THE PILOT-DRIVING AUDIA8 TI1e new A8 is the first production car to have been developed specially for highly automated driving. TI1e Aud i AI traffic jam pilot takes charge of driving in slowmoving traffic at up to 37mph on maj or roads w here a physical barrier separates the two carriageways. TI1e system is activated using the AI button on the centre console. TI1e traffic jam pilot manages starti ng, accelerating, steering and braki ng. TI1e driver no longer needs to monitor the car perma nently. They can take their hands off the steeri ng w heel permanently and, depending on the national laws, focus on a

different activity that is supported by the car, such as watchi ng the on-board TV. As soon as the system reaches its limits, it ca lls on the driver to take back control of the task of driving. The introduction of the Audi AI traffic jam pilot means the statutory framework will need to be clarified in each individua l market, along with the country-specific definition of the application and testing of the system. The brand's high quality standards are equally applicable in the realm of highly automated driving. From a technica l perspective the traffic jam pilot is revolutionary. During piloted driving, a central driver

assistance contro ller (zFAS) now permanently computes an image of the su rround ings by merging the sensor data. As well as the radar sensors, a front camera and the ultrason ic sensors, Audi is the first ca r manufacturer also to use a laser scanner. The Aud i AI remote parking pilot and the Audi AI remote ga rage pilot autonomously steer the A8 into and out of a parking space or a ga rage, wh ile the manoeuvre is monitored by the driver. The driver does not need to be sitti ng in the car - he or she can start the appropri ate system from their smartphone using the new myAudi app.

were straining their eyes to see ahead through the mist that had quick ly developed. With a fast running tide that night, control of the boat was proving difficult. Keeping his eyes fixed ahead, Lt Humphrey-Baker, the navigational officer, saw a group of lights on the port bow. There was a lot of traffic in the estuary that night, and to his strained eyes they appea red to be a stationary ship on the northern side of the Channel. Also on the bridge was the commanding officer, Lt Charl es Bowers, w ho - feeling unsure and need ing c larifi ca tion - ca lled for a seamanship manual. For those on the bridge, it was hard to say whether the distant ship was under way or not, but the lights indicated she was not. Havi ng consu lted the manual, Lt Bowers made the decision that they wou ld steer to port in order to pass the ship. He ordered a change of cou rse to enable HMS Truculent to pass the group of lights, but as the two vessels closed, to hi s horror he saw the other ship's silhouette and real ised that she was in fact movi ng. O rdering another change of cou rse, he lost sight of the ship's starboard light befo re he knew that a crash was unavoidable. Immediately ordering engines stopped and watertight compartments to be sea led, Lt Bowers and his three officers on the bridge gripped the sides of the

conning tower as a tremendous crash shook the entire subma rin e, tearing a gaping eight-foot hole in her side. Water began to gush in causing an sudden list. Minutes later, she slid beneath the waves and settled on the sea bottom. HMS Truculent had coll ided wi th the Swedish tanker ' Divina', on passage from Purfleet and bound for Ipswich and then to Sweden. She was carrying paraffin and, strictly in acco rdance with the Port Authority regulations, she carri ed an all-round red light at her masthead to indicate that she had a dangerous cargo. In the run-up to the collision, Divina's captai n, Karl Hommerberg, also responded to the impending danger, but even as he took action the two vessels crashed into each other. Thinking he had run down a Thames lighter, he ordered one of the ship's rescue boats to be deployed immed iately as lifebuoys were thrown over the side, enabling ten men to be rescued. The channel pi lot, David Elliso n was stand ing on the bridge of the Divina w hen he saw the lights of the Truculent interm ittently shining across the estuary. Something stuck in his mind as he watched and a worried look crossed his face. Though he was in the right position according to the manual, he rea lised the cluster of lights were closing on him fast. Staring ahead, he ordered a turn to •

starboard, but the order came too late as the two vessels collided. As Trucu lent rapidl y sa nk, the bridge party found themselves swept away by the fast running tide. The men in the submarine responded w hen ordered to their co llision stations, while in the control room, the Fi rst Lieutenant ensu red that all watertight doors were closed before ordering the crew to move aft, nearer the escape area. Although there had been no time to send out a 'Subsu nk' warn ing, w ith the river traffic above he fe lt that there wou ld no problem in rescuing the crew from the water once they left the subma rine. There was not enough Davis Escape Apparatus for every man, mea ning that some had to hold their breath before entering the escape chamber. With no outward signs of panic, a total of 67 men escaped by both methods. However, just ten men survived and were picked up alive. The rest were swept away by the fast running tide and drowned. What had been a triumph of escape had qu ickly become a tragedy. With the coll ision happening just before 19:00hrs, the fatefu l message was received at the Admi ralty at 20:15hrs. Sent via a Dutch freighter, a Dutch LOCAL HISTORY[

commerc ial rad io station, and then relayed by a coastguard station, it stated: "HM Submarine Tru cu lent sunk NW off Red Sand Tower. Have picked up five survivors. Believe subma rine was in co llision with the Swedish ship 'Divina'." As people were getting ready to go to work on Friday January 13, they heard on the radio that the Truculent had been involved in an accident. The an nouncement brought an immediate rush to the dockyard gates as relatives gathered for the latest news of their loved ones. For the first few hours, w ith the news that some su rvivo rs had been fou nd, hopes were rising - but as time wore on w ithout more be ing rescued, it became clear that thi s was a major tragedy for Medway. When the news came from the public relations officer, Mr Tom Pearce, that just 14 survivo rs had been found, and that time had ruled out any further crew being fou nd alive, the fam i I ies feared the worst. Meanwhile, a massive rescue operation was taking place. The escort destroyer HMS Cowdray was ca lled back to the scene of the coli is ion as the Commander-in-Chief the ore, Adm iral Sir Henry Moore, took personal charge of the rescue operat ion and sent

out the codeword 'Subsmash'. With this, radio stations all along the European coast were ca lling shipping to ask for absolute si lence to hea r distress signa ls on ship-to-sho re wavebands. Warships, duty and salvage vessels, the Trinity House vessel 'Alert' and the Southend and Margate lifeboats, together with the destroyer HMS Bicester, were immediately signa lled to proceed with the utmost urgency to the Oaze Deep, 10 m iles off the Kent coast at Whitstab le. Ambu lances were despatched to vari ous places along the Kent coast ready to col lect any of the crew who might be washed ashore injured or dead. Tragically, on ly bodies were found, many of them as far away as Foulness and Southend. With each discovery, an inquest was held for formal identification and to record a verdict of accidental death. When the search operation was called off some days later, many of the dead were laid to rest in the Woodlands Road Cemetery in Gil lingham, known as the Naval Reserve Cemetery. The operation to raise HMS Truculent took four weeks and involved ten ships, including two huge salvage vessels loaned by Germany. The intention was to raise her and beach her on Cheyney Spit. In the end, it took two powerful salvage vessels to get the submarine on to the sl ings that wou ld bring it to the surface. Once the slings were secured, it took just one hou r to lift Truculent, weighing 1,000 tons deadweight, from the sea . Five tugs were used to tow her five

miles to be beached, and it was here w here she lay. When she had been cleaned up and makeshift repai rs were completed, HMS Truculent was towed to Sheerness and dry dock. It was later announced that w ith the rapid improvements in submarine technology, she was to be broken up. The subsequent Board of Enquiry report stated that the submarine entered the Thames Estuary through Princes Channel, thence passing between Red Sand Sheal and Shivering Sand Fort on cou rse 280 degrees. Her speed was about nine knots through the water. In the Oaze Deep, course was altered to 261 degrees. The collision occurred wi th SS Divina in position one m ile beari ng 287 degrees from Red Sand Tower. The tragedy that shook not only the county, but the entire country, was one of the most devastating ep isodes in Medway naval histo ry. At a court martial some later, the commanding officer, Lieutenant Bowers, w ho had su rvived, was found not guilty of negligently losing his ship, but was severely reprimanded on the lesser charge of negligently hazarding her. A disaster fund was set up after a memorial service was held in Rochester Cathed ral, and within weeks was heading for ÂŁ1 0,000. By the end of three months, the fund topped ÂŁ30,000 and was closed. The escalating tragedy that became a disaster had played its last scene, and entered in the naval histo ry books as one of the worst subma rine accidents ever.

divorce FOR BE

Why divorce?

Petitions for divorce based on adu ltery or unreasonable behaviour, as the two more immediate, fault-based options for proving irretrievable breakdown of the marriage, are common and often increase disharmony at a time when the opposite wou ld be more helpful. Resolution family law members know how to craft a petition that aims not to inflame any dispute more than is necessary. Best not to name names ...

When acting for people on divorce, we don't encourage the naming of a co-respondent to an adu ltery petition. There is no need fo r this, but the new form might lead someone to include a co-respondent without understanding the extra problems and costs this may cause. Think of the children

Parents caught up in conflict often ignore the potential harm this creates for the children. In most cases now, they are removed from the divorce considera tions

Recent resea rch that was led by Professor Trinder of the U niversity of Exeter has found that the fau lt-based divorce in England and Wales encourages people to exaggerate their claims of behaviour or adu ltery. Many people prefer to use adultery or behav iour to avoid having to wait for either two or five yea rs' separation to achieve their divorce. Some respondents com plai n that particulars cla imed in a petition are not an accu rate description of the marital breakdown. They do not understand that the court rarely needs to make judgments abo ut the truth of the allegations. In a recent case, much publicised, Mr Owens has challenged a mild set of unreasonab le behaviou r actions cla imed by his w ife. A dec ision by The House of Lords is awaited as to w hether the petition that he has defended should allow Mrs Owens to be divorced or not. The lower courts have fo und her allegations 'too thin' to justify the divorce. In the 1980s, 64 per cent of unreasonable behaviou r petitions made al legati ons of

Whitehead MonCk ton the Kent law firm

physical violence, whereas today that percentage has dropped to 1 5 per cent. Society does not have as high a bar for unreasonable behaviour today as it did 30 years ago, but wi ll Mr Owens' case change that and take us back? Resolution fami ly law members have for a long time been lobbying the government to introduce a no-fault divorce system that avoids blaming a person for their behaviour or adultery in order that they can be divorced. There is considerable opposition to such a change, even though there are many good reasons for it. The government appears to have no appetite for a change in the law, nor has it shown w illing to protect the increasing number of cohabiting couples who have inferior rights on separation to those who have married. Financial c laims are often missed or misunderstood by separating and divorcing couples. A fam ily lawyer w ill nearly always advise a petitioner to include on their divorce petition a claim fo r a financial order. This is so even if the intention is to obtain

an order that dismisses claims, because it is unw ise to leave claims unresolved. Despite pension sharing being avai lab le for nearly 18 years, it is surprising how few couples understand that a financial order ca n incl ude some pension provision. Statistica lly, women are not as well prepared for retirement as men. If couples divorce without legal representation, the risk of inadequate financia l provision being made is likely to increase wi th the introduction of the new form . The average married couples' retirement pension pot is over ÂŁ100,000, w ith the highest level of divorces occurring w hen couples are approx imately 40 to 45 years of age. While they have some time left to accumu late more resources before retirement, they could be foregoing a financia l remedy w ithout rea lising it. Please contact the family team at Whitehead Monckton or Docklands Solicitors for advice on divorce and finances, as well as the impact of the breakdown of the relationship and its consequences for the children.

KENT PCC BACKS CALL TO PROTECT EMERGENCY RESPONSE DRIVERS

(''"'' IDA TRAM LIN< <CN' & ESSEY2 A seconda ry, ÂŁ600 million plan to link north Kent w ith Essex v ia a tram link under the RiverThames is gain ing traction, after fi rst being put forward last year. A map showing proposed stops has been released for what has been named the Ken Ex Thames Transit, w ith three potential routes outli ned. If the scheme progresses, two of the routes cou ld be bu ilt w ithi n the next five yea rs. One of them wou ld operate between Bluewater Shopping Centre and Essex's Lakeside retai l park, while the second wou ld li nk Gravesend wi th Dartford. Kent's Poli ce & Crime Comm issioner (PCC) Matthew Scott has ca ll ed fo r better protection for emergency response drivers. He is backing a Bill to give them better legal protection, and has written to all 1 7 Kent MPs requesting they support the Emergency Response D ri vers (Protections) Bill, w hich was introduced to Parl iament on 19 December. It is expected to have its second reading debate in Parl iament on 16 March. Mr Scott sa id: "Too many highly-professional emergency response drivers across the country have found themselves accused of driving ca relessly or dangerously when they have simply been carrying out their duties. "Emergency response drivers cu rrently find themselves judged by the standards of a carefu l and competent driver, with no recognition given to the trained standards and driver tactics to which they have been trained. "The Bill would ensure that police drivers engaged in trained driver tactics wou ld have the appropriate protection in law." Specifically, the Bill would seek to change the law by introduci ng an exemption for police and other emergency service workers from the Road Traffic Act. In calli ng on Kent's MPs to support it, Mr Scott sa id: "The Bill is not designed to enable irresponsible driving, on ly to apply a degree of common sense and pragmatism so that investigations into any incidents can be dealt with expeditiously and officers are allowed to go back to work as quickly as possible. "Your support in helping to correct this anoma ly, and provide greater protection to the high ly-sk illed pol ice drivers protecting the publ ic in Kent would be most welcome." In the autumn, M r Scott also backed a Private Members' Bill calling for tougher sentencing for those who comm it assau lts on emergency services workers.

AWARD-Wif'lf'JNG TOTALLY Tlf'JA IS STILL S1iv'IPLYTHE BEST A~ ~D 01 'rc -1 ~OLKESTOI JE 5 january Leas Cl iff Hall It's been the UK's official number one Tina Turner tribute for the past five years (as voted by the Agents Association of Great Britain), with a Lifetime Achievement Award under its belt and a hectic, fast-growing gig schedule right across the UK and into Europe to boot. The cast ofTota llyTina it seems, is definitely 'better than all the rest'. ow seven years in the making, the longest-running tribute to the Queen of Rock and Roll is in demand. Yet with the same passion, drive and attention to detail that's earned Liverpool-born Justine Riddoch and her band the top spot since 2013, the talents behind this much-loved Show are not resting on their laurels. Instead, they are already fine-tuning what is a unique celebration of Tina's live concert career with a who le host of exciting set changes and flamboyant costumes, pulsating new dance routines and the characteristic custom twists - which make it a hit with an army of fans nationwide. Most importantly, and for the first time ever, the band has been ask ing its audiences what they'd like to hear played, so songs like I Can't Stand The Rain, Typica l Male, Undercover Agent for the Blues, I Don't Wanna Lose You, Help and Legs - all chosen by the fans - will be added to classic favourites like Nutbush City Limits and Simply The Best. Lead vocalist Justine said : "The support of our many fans across the country is humbling; they're truly amazing and incredibly loyal. "Every year, we make ourselves a promise to pull out al l the stops, so that the show is the very best it can be and the aud ience goes home buzz ing! " Bui lding up a following takes time, and a lot of hard work, and we believe in looking after our fans.

What they want to hear is wha t's important, which is why we've asked them this year. "We had a fantastic response, and we're hoping they' ll love what we've done." Justine is no stranger to the stage, having been treading the boards on the north-west circuit for more than 2 6 yea rs. Her career changed direction in 2002 when she won lTV's Stars In Their Eyes as Anastacia, and for the next six yea rs her tribute show Justine is Anastacia performed al l over the world. When her muse stopped releasing albums, Justine created Total ly Tina instead, and the rest, as they say, is history. The current show enjoys rave reviews from audiences and critics alike, with plenty of dancing in the aisles and standing ovations everywhere it goes.
