elcome to the June edition of mmm – and finally the sun is shining (or at least it was when I wrote this!). And if that isn’t enough to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step, then the good news is there’s plenty to do just that inside this edition. Of course June brings with it Father’s Day on the 18th – a chance to celebrate that special man in our lives. We’ve got a great feature full of ideas and inspiration for gifts to get the man who has everything – so don’t forget to make it a day to remember. Talking of a day to remember, there are plenty of exciting events coming up in Kent over the coming weeks as the summer arrives. Most notably, of course, is the Kent County Show – the annual extravaganza at the Kent Showground in Detling. The build-up to that is now fully underway and thousands will flock to the three-day event across July 7-9. We can’t wait. But there are plenty of other events across the county too – from gardening to live music – and inside we take a look at some of those that will help create those special memories. Of course the good weather is also the time to enjoy a bite to eat – so inside we take a special look at great places for that most British of traditions – an afternoon tea. Plus, of course, our love affair with barbecues never seems to lessen, so we’ve plenty on how you can cook up a treat al fresco. We were at Detling in May to attend Kent Vision Live at the Kent Event Centre – it was a great event and we’re already looking forward to next year. It has become one of the great business-to-business events for the county. And, of course, summer leads many of us to ponder our fashion choices for the season. There’s no better place to show that off than at the various special events which take place around the south – such as Royal Ascot at the end of June, it’s always such a great spectacle. There is also another real showcase event in Chatham this month, as the Kent branch of the Ferrari Owners’ Club stages its anniversary ball – it’s a really glitzy event and I’m going to be sure to attend. All that plus our normal range of news, history and celebrity interviews – truly mmm is your very own ray of sunshine. Enjoy the start of the summer and we’ll see you next month (hopefully with a tan!).

THE MAN, THE LEGEND THE VOICE SIR TOM JONES PERFORMS IN KENT THIS SUMMER AND AT 76 HIS POPULARITY SHOWS NO SIGNS OF SLOWING

H

Continued from page 13

e has sold over 100 million records. Been friends with Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, and now, as he turns 76 this month, Sir Tom Jones remains one of the nation's bestloved performers. From sell-out shows when he burst onto the scene in the 1960s in front of thousands of screaming girls, to entertaining the crowds at the Glastonbury Festival, today he is appealing to a whole new generation as a judge on ITV talent show The Voice. And on July 8 he touches down in Kent for a special one-off show at Kent Cricket's Spitfire St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury for an open-air summer performance crammed with all his greatest hits. But despite his continued success and a lifetime of successfully shifting his career path to meet changing tastes, he has faced what he himself describes as the most difficult time in his life following the death of his wife Linda. The two had been married since he was just 17 and growing up in Glamorgan, South Wales. She died last year after being diagnosed with cancer.

“It’s very difficult, the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” he explained. “We were married for 59 years, we knew each other since we were kids. It was fast, she had cancer. I was doing an Asian tour, in the Philippines and I got the call that it was terminal, my heart stopped. “I flew back to Los Angeles, and she had a week left in the hospital. It was very difficult for me. “She was always very important to me, she was such a natural person, and we grew up together. Our sense of humour was the same, we came from the same town. She’s always been very important to me, throughout my life, now I realise she might be the most important thing in my life. I realise even more now how important she was to me, she still is.” The two had dated as teenagers, but when she fell pregnant at 15 – he was one year older – things came to a crossroads. The singer, who was knighted in 2006 for services to music, said: “All my aunties and uncles came to my house and had a big discussion about what should be done, while Linda and I sat in the corner all wrapped up in each other. “And my mother noticed us and 

said, look, we’re all planning their lives, and they’re oblivious to what we’re saying over there. You can see these two kids are in love and they’ll get married when they’re old enough anyway. So what’s the point standing in their way? “So as soon as Linda turned 16 we got married. We moved in to the back room of my mother-in-law’s house, everyone chipped in to help. And I had a job. So we didn’t really want for anything. It was a happy time, there was nothing negative about it. He had developed a love of music after being confined to bed as a 12-year-old after contracting tuberculosis. He loved the emerging music from the US – the likes of Little Richard and Jackie Wilson. Born Tommy Westwood, he became front man for beat group Tommy Scott and the Senators in 1963, and developed a reputation with shows in working men clubs around Wales. “I realised years later, looking back on those days, that being a young husband and father didn’t hold me back. It just made me more determined to be successful for my wife and son. The only problem was that I was doing shifts in a paper mill and sometimes that stopped me

getting out to sing in pubs and clubs as often as I wanted. But I knew I was only biding my time. I had tremendous drive.” Spotted that year by music manager Gordon Mills, he took him to London and changed his name to Tom Jones. Within a year It's Not Usual proved an international hit and catapulted him into the big time both in the UK and US. His career skyrocketed – performing theme tunes for the films What's New Pussycat and James Bond flick Thunderball. As global admiration crashed on top of him, it was Linda who ensured he kept his feet on the ground. "She was with me at home when we had friends over,” he explains. “I had a glass of champagne, a cigar, and I was like what do you think of my house, and my snooker room? And she said 'Hey! Hey what are you doing?!' And I said 'I’m just sharing.' And she said, 'You don’t really think you’re Tom Jones do you? I married Tommy Woodward, that’s who I married.'" Certainly his marriage was unlike many others. He has never denied a string of affairs, yet the pair remained united. 

It was solid. We had a solid marriage that nothing could shake and we both felt that.

CELEBRITY FEATURE

mmm 19

“Our marriage was never in any fear of collapse,” he explained. “Never crossed my mind; it didn’t cross her mind. It was solid. We had a solid marriage that nothing could shake and we both felt that. “I felt very lucky to have fallen in love at an early age. We were teenagers. We fell in love, not just in lust. A lot of teenagers fall in lust and then it doesn’t last. But we knew this thing was forever, for as long as we would be alive. That’s how strong the marriage was.” Her last words to him were to continue with his career and not let her death continue its remarkable run. “When Linda passed away it hit me so hard I didn’t know whether I could or not, I really didn’t. I said, ‘Linda I don’t know what I’m going to do.’ She could see I was devastated, and I was. She said ‘Don’t worry, you’ll be alright. Don’t worry about it. Just go forward’.” In recent weeks he has been linked with a possible romantic involvement with none other than Priscilla Presley – widow of the legendary singer who Jones met early in his career.

He explains: “I was in Los Angeles at the Paramount studios. It was 1965, my first year, and they told me ‘Elvis is here and he would like to say hello’. I didn’t know that he knew anything about me. At that time I had three singles and an album, and my third single was With These Hands. “When I used to play pubs in Wales I’d sing an Elvis Presley song, and they would say ‘you are great’ and I would say ‘I will meet him someday’, and I saw him at Paramount walking towards me singing With These Hands, and I thought my God this is surreal if the boys back home could see me now!” The two would become friends. After his initial hey-day in the 1960s he continued to enjoy success, before a revival in the late 1980s, most notably with a cover version of Prince's Kiss. More hits followed, many collaborating with contemporary acts, and with his voice still so strong, he constantly toured too. Now, back on The Voice, and set to return for the second season on ITV, Sir Tom Jones remains high in the public eye. His show in Canterbury is set to be one not to miss. mmm CELEBRITY FEATURE

ENJOY

THAT SPECIAL DAY CELEBRATE FATHER’S DAY WITH YOUR MOST LOVED ONES

F

ather’s Day marks a time when dads across the country will be honoured with BBQ’s, cards and ties they may or may not wind up wearing. Most men don’t want it to be a big fuss, but those humble daddies who want the honour the least are probably those who deserve it the most. A father is his son’s first hero, and his daughter’s first love. Dad is a provider and a protector. He will screw together cots, build forts and read the same worn children’s book over and over again. He picks up toys and cleans up messes, and tends to bumps and scrapes. If something is broken, he fixes it. He will drop his work to throw a ball around for a while - then get back to what he was doing and finish the job. He was there when you took your first step, and when you first started school. He is the one you ran to saying “Daddy!” when he got home from work. He is good-natured and always has a joke ready. He helps play pranks, even if it means being the object of them. When you tried to surprise him he was always surprised. You rarely saw him angry, and you tried hard to keep it that way.

Dad helps with homework and admires the finger-paintings that somehow keep showing up. He cheers you on at sporting events and applauds at dance shows. He takes you walking, or fishing, or shopping, or to the big match. He gives a serious and studied eye to any guy who shows up to take his daughter on a date. He can take their measure in a second because he was once a young man, too. And in loving their mother, he shows his sons the respect that a woman is due. Whether you knew it or not, he was always worrying about you, always caring. He made decisions you never knew about that made your life better. He shielded you from knowledge of the evils of the world as long as he could. He helped give your childhood a hint of magic. Honour your Father this June by following some of mmm’s guidelines for what could make his special day that little bit more fantastic. WATCH WHAT YOU EAT

Start to have a healthy diet. Good nutrition equates to good health. This involves providing your body with the required nutrients in appropriate amounts.

RELAX AND CHILL OUT

Resolve to keep matters of your life in proper perspective. Know what factors you can and cannot control in your life. Don’t “stress out” over those things beyond your control. See change as an opportunity, not a threat.

GET PLENTY OF REST

Make sure to get enough sleep. The basic guideline concerning how much sleep you need is whatever enables you to feel refreshed, alert and in relative good spirits the next day. Sleep helps to rest and restore your body both physically and mentally. mmm

THREE WAYS TO STOP SNACKCIDENTS

S

ummer is just around the corner so inevitably the race to shed a few pounds is most definitely on, but instead of partaking in the latest exercise trend or teatox, maybe it’s time to tackle the issue at hand and eliminate the one ingredient that for years has been proven to be the primary factor for weight gain - sugar! We all look to our favourite celebs for inspiration, but rather than those who make the front page following their dramatic weight-loss, it’s the likes of A List movie stars such as Eva Longoria

and Kate Hudson who we cannot help but envy. Even as they age, they appear to be in better shape than ever and it’s not down to any form of quick fix! Their secret? No refined sugar! Yes, it’s as simple as that. What’s not that simple is cutting it out, as refined sugar is highly addictive. Nothing works as effectively as a balanced, healthy diet and regular exercise but for those who have more than just one sweet tooth, there are a few weird but wonderful ways in which you can help satisfy that niggling sugar craving on the go, and we have highlighted a few...

SWAP YOUR SWEETS

Ever wondered why you begin to salivate after smelling something tasty? Psychologist and best-selling author Corinne Sweet explains why, “The taste (and smell) of food can send messages to the hypothalamus in the brain, so that we are preparing to experience the food itself – it prepares the stomach to receive the food, and gets the gastric juices flowing. If we are wanting to ‘trick’ the stomach (and therefore the brain) into thinking we have satisfied our appetite, quite often people will smell some food and drink water, as a way of sending a ‘full’ message to the brain.”

TAKE A TIME OUT WITH SOME TETRIS If a craving flares up midday when you least expect it, replace your bar of chocolate with a quick game of Tetris. It may sound slightly peculiar but after a growing body of research, it has been proven that thinking and concentrating on other visual imagery is an effective way to curb hedonic hunger.

STRETCH IT OUT

Another somewhat unconventional way to curb a craving is by indulging in a quick 5 minute yoga session! According to Tara Munro, a certified yoga instructor who specializes in weight loss, “We tend to have cravings when we’re distracted from boredom or stress; when you’re tense or trying to avoid a task”. Particularly good poses to attempt are child’s pose and standing forward bend, so next time you’re sitting at your desk and find yourself tempted to reach for the biscuit tin, take 5-10 minutes and stretch away the sugar craving!

CRUISE

THROUGH JUNE

52 mmm

I

f you are contemplating your next escape, you may be wondering whether to opt for a cruise or a land-based package. Cruising is the fastest growing holiday sector and, as soon as you step on board, you can see why! With a daily range of on board activities, such as spas, fitness classes, card schools, arts and crafts, dance lessons, poolside pursuits, enrichment lectures and cultural talks – plus nightly entertainment – there is no time to feel bored on sea days. And then of course, there is a choice of tours and excursions at each port of call. As for the food, a wide array of world-class, internationally-inspired dining options await you and you will be surrounded

TRAVEL INSPIRATIONS

by friendly staff who go that extra mile. With so many cruise providers in the market, there is a cruise line for you, regardless of age, whether you are travelling with a young family or are looking for an adult only environment. The biggest ships have extensive facilities, such as climbing walls, surf riders and dodgem cars, which are ideal for those with young families. On the other hand, the smaller ships offer a more traditional cruise experience, with diverse and interesting itineraries that include ports of calls the larger ships simply cannot reach. Once you have chosen your destination and the cruise line, there are several types of cruise. So, which option is the best match for you?

mmm 53

THE FLY-CRUISE

A fly-cruise has the advantage of flying you straight into the heart of your cruise region, which means you can visit several far-flung destinations in a relatively short space of time. But, as the name suggests, a fly-cruise does obviously involve a flight – something many cruisers like to avoid – and you will be limited to the baggage allowance set by the airline. While many cruise lines offer package fly-cruise deals, you can also book a ‘cruise only’ holiday and book your own flights, giving you the flexibility to extend your stay once the cruise is over. Fly-cruises tend to last seven or more nights. So, if you have a limited amount of time and want to quickly escape to the sunshine, then this is probably for you (especially if your main aim is to explore lots of different places).

THE NO-FLY CRUISE

If the idea of getting on a plane fills you with fear, or perhaps you have a medical condition which prevents you from flying, then you may want to consider the hassle-free nature of cruising from the UK. The advantage of this is that it means no lengthy security checks, no luggage restrictions and the convenience of reaching your departure port in less time. Although the main port for UK cruise ships is Southampton, there are plenty of others that you can select, including Dover, Harwich, Portsmouth, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle. No-fly cruises are also popular with those who are travelling with young children and are generally an altogether less stressful option. Of course, another bonus is that your holiday starts as soon as you step on board the ship. Whilst the no-fly option is certainly not for everyone, it is a great alternative, especially if you can holiday for longer than a week.

THE WORLD CRUISE

At the other end of the spectrum, a world cruise can be as long as 180 days! And believe it or not, the appetite for longer world cruises and more destination-focused “grand voyages” has grown. There is probably no better way to cross off so many destinations on your bucket list, such as Tahiti, Hawaii, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Eastern Malaysia and New Zealand, or navigating through the Suez or Panama canals! And, with a range of shore excursions available, a world cruise means you can see the very best of a place in the shortest amount of time. Of course, if you prefer, you can explore a destination under your own steam; you will have plenty of time to research while you are at sea (the ships usually have extensive libraries) and you can dive deep into the culture when you get there. A note of caution though: if an independent tour operator fails to get you back to port in time for departure, the ship won’t wait for you. However, if you book a ship’s tour and you get held up, the ship will wait. Traditionally, a world cruise was exactly that – a full circumnavigation lasting 100+ nights, usually

departing in January and heading westbound in search of warmer climes. But increasingly some world cruises now focus on specific parts of the world, and often offer more port calls with fewer days at sea. In 2017, this typically means Australasia and especially South America, where three companies (Crystal, Silversea and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines) offer cruises of 70+ nights. For those who either do not want to, or do not have time to complete a full round the world cruise, then the majority of cruise lines also allow you to complete a ‘segment’ of the cruise, (e.g. Asia, South America or Australasia). Sydney, for example, is a favourite turnaround port. As you can imagine, the majority of guests completing a round the world cruise tend to be retired, but the option of shorter, individual segments opens the passenger base up to a wider age range. With such a large choice of ships, destinations, duration and types of cruising, the hardest part will be deciding which one to take and where to go. One thing is for sure though - cruise holidays are special, meaningful experiences that will leave you with a lifetime of memories.  TRAVEL INSPIRATIONS

RIVER CRUISING

through to the end of December, beginning with Tulip Time Cruises in Benelux countries and ending with Christmas Market Cruises in Hungary, Austria, and Germany. The majority of itineraries are seven nights, although shorter and longer cruises are available. River cruising is perfect if you want a relaxed holiday and would like to explore Europe beyond the coastline. The capacity of European river cruise ships generally range from between 100 and 200 guests. If the idea of cruising along the river with such a limited number of passengers concerns you, then some of the ocean-going cruise lines offer combined ocean and river cruising and with a greater number of passengers. These can include the river Seine, the Gironde, the Garonne and the Guadalquivir rivers, the Kiel Canal, the Elbe ... the list goes on. This way you can enjoy the best of both worlds – sailing out of a UK port with no luggage limit, and enjoying the more extensive facilities offered on cruise ships.

River cruising is probably the fastest growing element of the cruising sector, with many passengers swapping the open seas for the calm waters of inland rivers. Offering the opportunity to step ashore at fairy tale towns and fabled riverside cities, you can immerse yourself in contemporary culture, and learn something about the history of these towns and villages. River cruises travel along some of the world’s most famous rivers. In Europe, the Danube (second only in length to the Volga River in Russia) is one of the most popular rivers, with many river cruises including the Danube as part of their itinerary. However, the Main, Rhine, Moselle, Elbe, Rhone, Saone and the Seine are also popular for river cruising. Elsewhere in the world, the Amazon River in Peru and Brazil, the Nile River in Egypt, the Yangtze River in China and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia are also popular river cruise destinations. In Europe, the season tends to run from March

THE MINI, OR TASTER, CRUISE

If you are looking for the luxury and relaxation of a traditional cruise, but only have a few days to spare, then a mini cruise (anything from one to seven nights) could be the perfect solution. They are the ideal choice if you are not sure whether you would enjoy cruising and just want to try it out. Mini cruises are an excellent way to get away for a short break whilst relishing the luxury of a cruise liner. This type of cruise usually has a duration of two to four days but can, by definition, last up to seven days. Typical destinations include Bruges, the Channel Islands, Amsterdam and Rouen. One word of warning is that two to three night mini cruises have become popular for hen/stag parties and, in fact, many celebrations are well suited to this format of cruising. But if you are looking for a short, rejuvenating break then a five-night cruise is perfect. It allows you enough time to enjoy a proper two or three night city break but with enough sea time to relax and unwind, in order to return home refreshed. TRAVEL INSPIRATIONS

HUMAN SIDE OF GEMMA CHAN

STAR OF THE HIT CHANNEL 4 SHOW, AND PARTNER OF JACK WHITEHALL, THE KENT-RAISED ACTRESS IS GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH.

It’s funny, because I’ve never really liked being the centre of attention

wo years ago it was hard to move without staring at the face of Gemma Chan. As the star of Channel 4 science-fiction drama Humans, her portrayal of a robot with a hidden past was the central image used to promote the show. Overnight it turned her into one of the most famous faces in Britain – even if people may not have known her name. “It was very strange,” she says. “I’m glad I didn’t see many of them personally, but I would get messages from friends telling me that my eyes had been following them around town all day. That I was watching them wherever they went. “It’s funny, because I’ve never really liked being the centre of attention.” The show captured the attention not just in this country but around the world, proving a hit in markets such as the US and New Zealand. For those who did not fall under its spell, it looks at a modern day future where humans can buy life-like robots almost indistinguishable from their masters. And those robots have such a high level of artificial intelligence they start to develop a mind of their own.

CELEBRITY FEATURE

Chan portrayed Anita – the central synthetic character. “It was a unique challenge because it was so counter-intuitive,” she reflects. “All the things you’re taught in drama school are to be as instinctive and natural as possible, not thinking too much about what you’re doing or where you’re standing. “This was the complete opposite. We had to work within the rules of the show, ignoring the obvious things you do, like tearing up when you’re emotional, and instead just staying still.” A second season was swiftly filmed and aired late in 2015 to even raver reviews. For Kent viewers it proved particularly fascinating with plenty of scenes shot in Kent. Among them the likes of Botany Bay in Thanet and Birchington town centre. Not that Chan is any stranger to the county, having grown up here. Born in November 1982 in London her parents were a Hong Kong-born engineer father and ChineseScottish pharmacist. The family moved to Locksbottom near Sevenoaks where Chan and her younger sister grew up. Chan herself attending the Newstead Wood School in Orpington. 

As a child she excelled across the board – swimming at a national level, being an accomplished violinist and a keen ballet dancer. She went on to study law at Oxford but spurned a job offer at a leading law firm to pursue her love of acting – attending the Drama Centre in London – where she was spotted and put on the road to fame. “I read law at Oxford,” she explains, “which I know isn’t the obvious pathway to an acting career. I decided to change direction after I graduated but music and drama had always been a big part of my life. I did ballet from the age of three and started violin when I was six and piano when I was 11, and I performed in amateur dramatic musicals as a teenager. “I was never the star of the school play, though. I was quite shy and acting remained an outside school secret. Even when I was at university, I was intimidated by the prospect of joining the drama society. It was a liberating moment when I decided to apply to drama school.” Her striking looks earned her modelling contracts, appearing in campaigns for the likes of major brands Nokia, Selfridges and a host of glossy magazines. By 2009 she had started landing roles in high profile shows such as Doctor Who, Secret Diary of a Call Girl and BBC hit Sherlock. But it was Humans which catapulted her to fame. Since then she has appeared in a host of films too including Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. She is happy in love too – living in Notting Hill with boyfriend, the comedian and actor Jack Whitehall – although the two fiercely guard their private life and rarely speak about their time together. She says: “Home for me is Notting Hill. I live with Jack. On Saturday mornings I get up late and then meet my parents and sister for dim sum in Chinatown. I really miss them, which is ridiculous given my parents only live an hour away in Kent and my sister lives in London.” And she’s used her fame and intelligence for good purposes too, recently travelling to the Lebanon with Save the Children to raise awareness of the plight faced by many in the war-torn country. “Since the start of the Syrian war, Lebanon has taken in an estimated 1.5 million refugees, most of whom live in very basic informal settlements. “Save the Children work in these settlements to provide children and their families with CELEBRITY FEATURE

shelter, sanitation, education and food security. They also provide specialised care and support to help children recover from the trauma of war. “I visited a child friendly space where children take part in structured play and development activities in a safe environment. These are designed to develop their cognitive ability as well as address their psychosocial needs. As I watched them sing songs and take part in games, it struck me that these kids could be anywhere in the world. Although we were in a tent, the walls were covered with colourful pictures and the atmosphere was cosy and filled

with laughter. “I think it’s vital for all of us, now more than ever, that we don’t stay silent about the things we care about. I do feel a responsibility to try and raise awareness and to help tell the stories of those who may not otherwise have a voice. That being said, I certainly don’t think you should listen to someone just because they’re in the public eye - but I believe most people can judge what’s being said on its own merits and to make up their own minds.”With another season of Humans being filmed later this year, don’t expect to have heard the last of Gemma Chan just yet. mmm

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR THE BBQ

MILLIONS OF MEAT LOVERS ACROSS THE UK ARE NOW VENTURING OUTDOORS TO GRILL SUCCULENT PORK, BEEF, CHICKEN, AND OTHER DELICIOUS TYPES LIKE SAUSAGE AND BURGERS. ! THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF HANDY TIPS TO ENSURE THAT YOUR BBQ IS A SUCCESS

mmmmmm

If using a smoker, minimize the amount of times you open it. Though you’re anxious to see how the meat is doing, opening it frequently will keep the smoker below the necessary heat levels. The old adage says, “if you’re looking, it ain’t cooking”.

Remember, it takes a bit of an adventurous spirit and a whole lot of trial and error before you get really good at barbecuing. Experiment with different kinds and cuts of meat, flavourings and seasonings, types of grills and smokers, and cooking methods. You just might stumble upon something you really like. Happy grilling!

Got a regular grill that cooks hot and fast but want a little smoke flavouring? First, only line charcoals on the bottom of one side of the grill. Then, place some hickory or mesquite wood chips on top of the hot coals for extra flavouring. Place your meat on the side of the grill away from the coals (indirect heat), and keep the lid closed as much as possible. This will increase cooking times quite a bit, but it will be worth it. In fact, this added smokey taste may be so good you may even decide to forgo the barbecue sauce next time you do this.

bbq feature

86 mmm Continued from page 85

If you’re a charcoal fan, first line the inside bottom of your cooker with a couple of sheets of tin foil before you put your briquettes in. This will give you a quicker and easier clean-up of the grey coals and ash once you’re done barbecuing. The only downside to this is that the opening holes in the bottom of your cooker will get covered up. So when you first light your fire, make sure it gets plenty of oxygen to stay lit longer, therefore giving you hotter and longer-lasting coals.

Don’t pierce your meat or sausage with a fork or prongs. The juices will escape, making the meat drier and less flavourful. Use a spatula or tongs to move and flip your food.

Using charcoal briquettes for your grill’s heat? Then light the coals about 30 minutes prior to cooking. If you’re using lighter fluid, make sure the fire is completely out before slapping the meat on the grill, or else you’ll have the nasty fuel taste in your meat. At this time, the charcoal should be mostly an ash-grey colour with a little bit of glowing red underneath.

Cooking chicken? If you intend to eat the skin, rub the outside with a little butter or oil and then lightly season it. It’ll give the chicken a nice, crispy, savory skin. Not eating the skin? Don’t season the outside, as it can’t penetrate the skin.

Remember, it takes a bit of an adventurous spirit and a whole lot of trial and error before you get really good at barbecuing. Experiment with different kinds and cuts of meat, flavourings and seasonings, types of grills and smokers, and cooking methods. You just might stumble upon something you really like. Happy grilling! bbq feature

Quick and easy way to grill large vegetables such as potatoes and ears of corn: coat heavily in butter, sprinkle on some seasoned salt, wrap securely in tin foil, and throw it on the grill.

S

GARDENING

ummer is the perfect time to be out and about in your garden. But sometimes it can be hard to prioritise what to work

on in your garden to keep it fresh and beautiful as the weather gets warmer. Luckily, here at mmm we have outlined some areas which you might like to focus on this month.

HOE BORDERS REGULARLY TO KEEP DOWN WEEDS

Weeds can be controlled without resorting to those harsh weedkillers. Cultural or organic control measures rely on killing or restricting the weeds by physical action, from manual removal to smothering, burning them and using weed barriers. All weeds can be controlled without weedkillers, but persistent or deep rooted weeds may be very difficult to eradicate. Ongoing control is likely to be necessary. Annual weeds (which only live for a year) and epehemeral weeds (which live for less than a year) are the easiest to control, as they are usually shallow rooted. However, they can scatter seed prolifically, so usually reappear and require further control. 

mmm101

102 mmm Continued from page 100

Deep-rooted perennial weeds (which die down in the winter and re-grow each spring) will re-grow from their roots if the tops are removed or burned off. They can be difficult to dig out and may grow up through weed barriers in time. Weeds can be controlled whenever they are troublesome, which is usually in the spring and summer months. It is a good idea to put weed barriers in place in late winter or early spring, as they work better as a preventativethan when an existing problem requires suppression.

MANUAL REMOVAL AND CUTTING BACK Hoeing: Run a hoe over a bed or between rows to kill most weed seedlings. For maximum effectiveness, choose a dry day with a light wind, so that the seedlings will dry out on the surface of the bed rather than re-rooting into moist soil. Hand-pulling or hand-weeding with a fork: Pull up annual weeds by hand before they set seed. Perennial weeds should be dug out with as much root (or bulb) as possible, using a hand or border fork. Hand weeding is easiest on lighter soils and should only be attempted where it will not disturb the roots of garden plants. Further pulling may be necessary with persistent weeds such as bindweed or couch grass where small root sections left behind can re-grow into new plants.

GARDENING SECTION

Weed knife and other weeding tools: A weed knife has a hooked end and is a useful tool for weeding between paving slabs and along path edging. Various other hooked, narrow-bladed or spiral-type tools are available for specific weeding jobs such as digging out dandelions on a lawn. Repeated cutting: In large weedy areas, repeated cutting to ground level over several years will weaken and even kill some weeds. This is usually done with a strimmer or sickletype weeder. Flame gun: Scorch off weeds between paving slabs and on driveways by blasting them with a flame gun. Use only when the foliage is dry and allow sufficient burn-time for deep-rooted weeds to be killed.

POSITION SUMMER HANGING BASKETS AND CONTAINERS OUTSIDE

Whether planted for summer or winter interest, hanging baskets provide valuable colour at eye level. Choose vibrant bedding plants for a shortterm show or herbs, shrubs and evergreens for a long-lasting display.

WHEN TO PLANT A HANGING BASKET Plant summer hanging baskets from April onwards, but they will need protection from frost until the middle or end of May. If you do not have a greenhouse, it is usually easier to plant in situ once the frosts have passed. Plant winter hanging baskets between

Lining: First of all, if you are using a standard wire basket, it will need to be lined. You can buy readymade cardboard liners and fibrous materials sold for the purpose, but a thrifty option is possible by collecting moss from the lawn. Aim to cover the inside with about a 1.5cm, or ½in, thick layer of the material and then half fill the basket with compost.

September and October, and it doesn’t matter if they are frosted as the plants are should be hardy. You would normally plant up a long-lasting perennial hanging basket from April onwards, depending on the types of plants being used.

Choosing and arranging the plants: When you begin to arrange the plants in the basket, it is usually easiest to start with one, central plant. This can be used to create structure and impact, which is particularly important in winter if its other companions fail to flower in cold snaps. Around this, position some trailing plants to cover the sides of the basket, particularly if it is made from wire. However, using a more decorative basket is best where it will be easily seen. Along with this selection, it is worth considering carefully the flowering plants.

THE PADDOCK

BROOKWORTH HOMES A superb development of just four individual 5-bedroom country homes, each set within their own grounds at the heart of the hamlet of Crouch. Here is an exclusive view from Ellie Roseff, the mastermind behind the stunning design of Kent’s most stylish new development.

PROPERTY FEATURE

Likewise in the study, I used another collection of artwork. I used this as it was a smaller space and it gave the room identity and interest and teamed with the desk it becomes a key feature to the room. In the kitchen/dining/family area, I wanted a softer finish to create a welcoming family space. Using a similar colour pallet throughout the house of oranges and blues, this achieves warmth, tranquillity and flow. Mixing these accent colours with weathered oaks furniture finishes creates a homely feel. By designer Ellie Roseff

The brief was to create a property that would appeal to a mixed demographic, so downsizers, family buyers and young professionals. I wanted to get the balance of a tranquil and calm interior to work alongside the more vibrant colours and features of interest. Brookworth Homes wanted a separate children’s room to the family area so I took that opportunity to have a bit more fun, bringing in a bold blue feature wall alongside the collection of art. I like the use of art walls as the lack of symmetry creates a less formal and more creative environment.

DACIA

NEW LOGAN

acia has announced UK pricing and specification for its New Logan MCV Stepway which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The distinctively rugged version of the New Logan MCV Stepway follows in the footsteps of the New Sandero Stepway. The fifth member of the Dacia UK range is available to order now priced from £11,495 with first customer deliveries expected in June. The New Logan MCV Stepway – based on the recently revised New Logan MCV – has a muscular style with flared wheel arches, roof rails and a ground clearance of 174mm. It maintains the same impressive boot space of 573-litres (VDA) – one of the

largest amongst any segment in the market. The New Logan MCV Stepway is available in Lauréate trim offering a high specification as standard. At the front, the New Logan MCV Stepway sports a two-tone bumper as well as a satin-effect chrome skid plate, plus the fitment of fog lights. The model incorporates Dacia’s new lighting signature, unveiled at last year’s Paris Motor Show, with headlights that now incorporate LED Daytime Running Lights in the form of four stacked rectangles. This modern design results in a visibly wider look for the vehicle’s front end. Like its New Sandero Stepway cousin, the New Logan MCV Stepway’s grille mirrors the black elements of the two-tone bumper, with the chrome  MOTORS FEATURE

rectangles rounding off its distinctive style in much the same manner as the Duster. The New Logan MCV Stepway also has Dark Metal door mirror housings and Stepway decals on the front doors, along with Dark Metal longitudinal roof bars which further emphasise the model’s estate car lines. At the rear, tail lights are bordered with black metal and echoes the front end with its two-tone rear bumper and satin-effect chrome skid plate – characteristics of Dacia’s Stepway range. The New Logan MCV Stepway Lauréate comes in a choice of nine colours at launch, combined with new, 16-inch Stepway Flexwheels. This smart, economical and attractive system comprises a wheel trim design that fits over a similarly slotted rim. Inside, the New Logan MCV Stepway benefits from the same upgrades given to the rest of the Dacia range in late 2016 with satin-effect chrome finish for the air vent surrounds, trim strip

NEW CAPTUR

R

Continued from page 116

enault has announced UK pricing and specifications for the New Renault Captur following its global debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Europe’s best-selling urban crossover in 2016 has reinvented itself to feature more distinctive styling and new advanced technologies, without sacrificing any of its userfriendliness. It is available to order now

MOTORS FEATURE

with first deliveries expected from July. The New Captur has evolved by taking a step closer in style to its bigger sibling, the Kadjar. The radiator grille has been modified to bring it more into line with Renault’s crossover family, with the notable addition of a chrome strip. At both the front and rear, the bumper incorporates new skid plates in evidence of the Captur’s adventurer credentials.

The C-shaped LED Daytime Running Lights, recognised as the brand’s lighting signature, are incorporated into the bumper. The rear lights similarly include this hallmark, visible both night and day. Full-LED ‘Pure Vision’ front lights (depending on version) enhance both the vehicle’s look and safety, while reducing glare. The New Captur builds on the model’s original success, including its striking two-tone colour scheme, with three new body colours: Desert Orange, Ocean Blue and Amethyst as well as a new Mercury Silver option for the roof. There will be 36 potential combinations enabling customers to tailor the appearance of their New Captur to match their personal taste. Seven different interior touch packs are available in Ivory, Blue, Caramel, Red, Bronze-tinted Chrome, Satin Chrome and Smoked Chrome. These are complemented by exterior customisation packs in a choice of six colours: Ivory, Blue, Cappuccino, Red, Satin Chrome and Orange. Three types of wheel are available across the range: one 16inch (Adventure) and two different 17-

inch wheels (Emotion and Explore). New Captur can now be specified with a fixed-glass roof, from Dynamique S Nav upwards. The cabin is more refined, benefitting from higher grade plastics, sleek chrome and elegantly subdued colours. The steering wheel also benefits from higher grade materials and, in higher-end versions, comes trimmed with full-grain leather. The gear lever boasts a more modern appearance, while the door panels have been revised to seamlessly incorporate buttons and controls. The new seat design is more cosseting, offering additional lateral support and greater comfort. At the same time, New Captur retains its most practical features, including its zip removable and washable upholstery. Some new fixed upholstery designs are also offered, including two new partleather upholsteries. Three multimedia systems are fitted according to equipment level: R&GO®, Media Nav and R-LINK. R&GO® is Renault’s smart, simple system that transforms the user’s smartphone into a connected tablet installed in a universal cradle. This practical system enables the user to intuitively access the car’s most useful functions, including navigation (through an in-app purchase), telephone, multimedia and vehicle data. Renault R-LINK provides the New Captur with an advanced multimedia system. More customisable than ever, it comes with a 7-inch screen. It incorporates navigation with a

Continued from page 119

real-time traffic updates, 3G connectivity, Bluetooth, media playback and a wide variety of applications via Renault’s R-LINK Store, as well as management of the vehicle’s driving aids. For the first time R-LINK is compatible with Android Auto™ granting users easy and direct access – via the 7-inch R-LINK display – to smartphone applications: telephone functions, navigation, music and messages. The New Captur is the first A- or B-segment Renault to offer this advanced technology. For the first time, the New Captur incorporates Blind Spot Warning, which is available from Dynamique S Nav. Four sensors work together to detect the presence of moving vehicles in the door mirror blind spots, including motorbikes and bicycles. When a vehicle is detected in the driver’s blind spot for longer than a second, a warning indicator immediately lights up in the door mirror. Active at speeds between 19mph and 87mph, this MOTORS FEATURE

technology makes motoring safer for everybody. In addition to its rear parking sensors, and depending on version, the New Captur is also available with front parking sensors and a reverse parking camera to simplify manoeuvring and help to avoid the bumps and scrapes that are an everyday risk in built-up areas. Another new addition – available for higher-end versions – is the Hands-Free Parking function, which significantly facilitates parking manoeuvres. The driver begins by indicating what type of parking space they are looking for, be it parallel, perpendicular or at an angle. When the vehicle is travelling at speeds below 19mph, this system detects all available spaces. Once a suitable space has been identified, the system calculates and co-ordinates the vehicle’s steering, meaning the driver does not need to touch the wheel and can focus solely on acceleration and braking.

SCHOOL TRIP HIGHLIGHTS EVERYDAY ENGINEERING A group of schoolchildren has been inspired to become the civil engineers of tomorrow. Almost 40 six and seven-yearolds were taken on an engineering tour of Rochester’s Old Bridge, followed up by bridge building activities at their school, provided by the Rochester Bridge Trust. Mrs Ruth Gooch, Deputy Head of St Nicholas CofE Infants School in Strood commented: “Many of the children regularly cross Rochester’s bridges, so this field trip was a great opportunity to make them more aware of their everyday surroundings and experience engineering in action. To then be visited in the classroom by the Trust’s education team was a great way to follow up the learning they’d seen in a practical way.” The tour was run by one of the engineers responsible for the bridge, Phillippa Spencer of Arcadis, giving the children the opportunity to meet and talk to a real-life role model. Phillippa said: “It’s never too soon to encourage children to think about the activities they like to do, and so I really enjoyed the opportunity to talk to these enthusiastic youngsters and to share my love of engineering with them.” The following day, members of the Trust’s education team visited the school to host a series of workshops. These included simple briefings and a bridge building challenge with their families. Education Officer Caroline Chisholm

added: “Nothing beats hands-on activities for encouraging children’s enthusiasm and helping them to learn. It was a pleasure to run these workshops and see the youngsters’ understanding develop. I feel certain we’ve inspired some very promising future bridge builders at St Nicholas school.” See www.rochesterbridgetrust.org.uk to find out more about the Trust’s engineering education initiatives.

ROMANIAN HOSPICE PATIENT WINS THE HEART OF THE PRINCE OF WALES Prince Charles helped mark the 25th anniversary of a Kent-based charity’s amazing and inspirational work being done in one of the poorest countries in Europe. A little Romanian girl grabbed the hand – and the heart – of the Prince of Wales when he visited a hospice in Romania to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The Prince spent several minutes laughing and chatting with young Maria after he sat down to see what she was doing in her craft project and the youngster immediately reached out and confidently took his hand. Founded 25 years ago by British charity, Hospices of Hope, the hospice has transformed the care of the terminally ill and those with life-limiting conditions in the poverty-stricken country. His Royal Highness spent an hour with patients and staff and cut a cake to commemorate the 25th anniversary. Hospice Casa Sperantei is recognised as a regional Centre of Excellence, providing dignified end of life care and offering families social and spiritual support. The royal visit recognises that the work of Casa Sperantei demonstrates the benefits of collaboration between Britain and other European countries and has influenced the way Romanians think about palliative care. One of the hospice’s earliest royal supporters was Diana, Princess of Wales. She made a donation to the organisation’s first education centre after meeting Hospices of Hope founder, Graham Perolls, and the centre is named after her. Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, saw the construction of the Bucharest hospice in progress, which was then opened by Hospices of Hope patron, Georgina, Duchess of Norfolk. Graham Perolls’ work has also been recognised by the Queen who, on the recommendation of the then

He was also extremely interested in our new children’s hospice and therapy centre at Copaceni which involves the restoration of a Romanian heritage building. The Prince is Patron of nine UK hospices so he understands the needs of those affected by terminal illness.” Today, Hospice Casa Sperantei runs two purpose-built in-patient hospices, two education and training facilities and two rural clinics. By training health professionals from more than 20 countries, the charity has contributed to the founding of more than 100 small hospice organisations throughout South Eastern Europe, bringing a revolution in care for the terminally ill and those with life-limiting conditions. The Prince was shown an exhibition about the charity’s next project, which is to open a dedicated children’s hospice and therapy centre in Copaceni, near Bucharest. Service 700 from Chatham to Bluewater is to be upgraded to Arriva’s premium Sapphire route, with seven new double buses featuring eco leather seats, free 4G Wi-Fi, USB charging points, audio-visual route and stop displays, and a free Metro newspaper for every passenger. “Sapphire is our highest level of service,” said Oliver Monahan of Arriva. “The Chatham to Bluewater route is one of our most popular and this investment will mean customers using it will have an even more comfortable journey.” The new buses will be introduced from May to the end of the summer. In Maidstone, Service 82 between the town centre and Park Wood is to receive seven new single deck

buses, while in Medway, Service 145 from Chatham bus station to Warren Wood will be boosted by five short single deckers. The arrival of a new fleet for the traditional routes follows the launch of ArrivaClick in Sittingbourne, which saw the town become the first in the country to have an on-demand bus service. Using the ArrivaClick app, customers can summon one of five modern mini buses, which will pick them up from their location and drop them at a destination of their choice within the town. Oliver added: “The investment in both our new ArrivaClick on-demand service and new buses in Kent and Medway highlight our continuing commitment to improving the quality and flexibility of our service to meet our customers’ needs.”

BRIDGE TRUST BACKS TWO LOCAL ARKWRIGHT SCHOLARS The Rochester Bridge Trust is supporting two outstanding local school students hoping to pursue careers in engineering. The Trust, one of the oldest charities in the country, will work with Reece McAllister, of Chatham Grammar School for Boys, and Helen Phillips, of Bromley High School, during their final two years at school. This support will include opportunities to meet leading engineers and find out more about the profession as well as guidance on university courses and higher apprenticeships. Reece and Helen have both been awarded prestigious Bridge Wardens’ Scholarships through the Arkwright Scholarships Trust following a rigorous series of assessments including a two-hour aptitude test and a university-based interview. They are among more than 300 A-level and sixth-form students from across the UK to be awarded Arkwright Scholarships this year. It is the second time the Rochester Bridge Trust, one of the oldest charities in the countries, has used its discretionary community funds to assist young highachievers during their final years at secondary school. Sue Threader, a civil engineer and Bridge Clerk for the Trust, said: “We are very committed to supporting the education and development of the engineers of the future and the Arkwright Scholarship Trust enables us to do this. Engineering offers many exciting and rewarding careers across a range of sectors. There is a national shortage of engineers and we need talented

young people, such as Reece and Helen, to come into the field. We need good engineers to build and maintain our infrastructure and to grow our economy in a highly competitive global marketplace.” Rochester Bridge Trust, founded in the 14th century, is responsible for providing and maintaining a crossing of the River Medway at Rochester in perpetuity at no cost to the public. The Trust pays for bridge maintenance and planning future bridges through careful management of its medieval endowments. In addition, the Trust runs a programme of community grants and special projects in the fields of education, science and engineering. The Trust’s Growing Scientist project, working with eight Maidstone secondary schools, is a two-year programme of science, technology and engineering events and activities aiming to engage 1,000 young people each year. The Trust also sponsors the annual Bridge Building competition for local primary schools at the Royal Engineers’ Museum, Gillingham.

RAIL CHIEFS MAKE FRESH PUSH FOR DIRECT LINK BETWEEN KENT AND GATWICK AIRPORT Kent rail chiefs are pushing the government to include a link between the west of the county and Gatwick airport in the next franchise, Kent News can reveal. At its annual rail summit at County Hall this week, Kent County Council bosses outlined what they want to get out of the deal for train services around the county over the next decade. At the heart of its plans, principal transport planner for rail, Stephen Gasche, is trying to establish a regular service to the Sussex airport - located barely 15 miles from some towns and villages in the west of the county. The government is currently consulting on how best to run rail services in the South East when the current franchise, operated by Southeastern, comes to an end next year. “The idea proposed by the Department for Transport was the possibility of a future inter-regional service linking

MASTERPLAN FOR CANTERBURy CAMPUS AT UNIvERSITy OF KENT GATHERS PACE The University of Kent’s masterplan for its Canterbury campus has moved a step closer with publication of a key report. The document outlines feedback received during an extensive consultation on the plans with neighbours, partners and stakeholders in the city. A series of stages now commence, which the university says will include further consultation and opportunities for comment before a complete framework masterplan is published. In 2016, the university published a concept masterplan that contained ideas on how best to develop the Canterbury campus over the next 30-50 years. “The university is grateful to all those who took the time to participate in this process, which included presentations LOCAL NEWS

together the Reading to Gatwick service, which is run by Great Western, with a service that carries on via Edenbridge and Tonbridge to Ashford,” Mr Gasche told us. “So you would actually have an inter-regional service going from Ashford to Reading going via Gatwick and that would knit together the different parts of the south east region outside London with each other and with Gatwick. “If that were possible either in this franchise or beyond it, that’s something we’d strongly support. “We had consultants prepare a business case a few years ago to look at a service from Ashford to Gatwick, but unfortunately it didn’t stack up for a positive business case which the Department for Transport has to have to consider any new rail service. We think this new proposal is one that’s well worth looking at, with the way demand is growing for regional rail transport. “Great Western have been very successful in developing the Reading, Guildford and Gatwick line, so much so that they’re now operating two trains an hour. We want to build on that and see if we can work with them and have something that runs across to Kent because we really need a rail link from Ashford, Tonbridge and Edenbridge to the airport.”

to a number of local organisations and groups as well as public exhibitions, a leaflet drop to residents and information online,” a spokesperson said. The report, known as the consultation statement, details how the consultation was conducted, summarises the points raised in the feedback and notes a number of ways consultation can be improved in the future. It also sets out how the feedback in the consultation statement will be used to inform the next stages of the project and includes that feedback in full. These stages will include more definite proposals based on in-depth transportation, environmental and other studies as well as the feedback received throughout. The university is currently liaising with Canterbury City Council to agree the precise timeline for that process, but anticipates the work could take up to 18 months to conclude.

SOUTH EAST BUSINESS BOOST GRANTS The final tranche of European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) has now been secured to support businesses in Essex, Kent and East Sussex, who are seeking to increase capacity and develop economically. The funding is exclusively for small to medium sized businesses (SME’s) or start-ups based in the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP) area. Growth grants are now available of between £1,000 and £10,000. The grant can fund up to 30% of the total cost of eligible goods or services. The grant can contribute to the purchase of a wide range of goods and services related to increasing sales, improving productivity and boosting profitability. From market research, to new machinery, if it helps your business to grow then you could potentially re-claim 30% of the cost up to a maximum grant of £10,000. Grant funding from South East Business Boost may be used to cover the following types of expenditure: Business Development (funding required enabling expansion of the business, for example research costs); Plant and Machinery (costs of re-tooling and installation of machinery and hardware and training required to operate it); Intangible Assets (including costs of purchasing new patents, IT, software and licences); Consultancy Costs (including business planning and sector specialists). In order to be eligible for an ERDF grant a business must be a small to medium sized business (with under 250 staff and a turn over under €50m), be spending on a project/ purchase that has a growth impact on the business (not day-to-day running costs) and have received a grant offer letter from SEBB before starting the project. The following sectors are ineligible for ERDF funding: primary production, processing and marketing of agricultural products, which is supported through EAFRD; the coal, steel and shipbuilding sectors; the synthetic fibres sector; establishments providing generalised (school age) education should not be supported as this is a statutory duty on local authorities; banking and insurance companies; charities and voluntary sector organisations, that are not using a trading arm, are ineligible; membership organisations that are politically affiliated cannot be supported by ERDF funding, i.e. Conservative Clubs, and similar organisations. Grant applications will be assessed within four weeks of being submitted and funding will be provided retrospectively against evidence of payments for approved items. To find out whether your business and your project is eligible for the funding and to get your application underway, please contact your regional Growth Hub (Kent and Medway Growth Hub), visit www.southeastbusiness.org.uk or email the programme direct on SEBB@southend.gov.uk

PETITIONS AGAINST CONTROVERSIAL TRANSPORT PROPOSALS IN KENT HALTED By GENERAL ELECTION Petitions gathering hundreds of signatures by the day against controversial transport proposals in Kent are being stopped in their tracks by the general election. Thousands have already voiced their opposition to government suggestions such as changes to rail services in the county, and the decision to locate the Lower Thames Crossing east of Gravesend. However, the online petitions are to be closed when parliament officially dissolves ahead of the election on June 8. The government is obliged to respond to petitions with 10,000 signatures, while those which reach 100,000 signatures must be considered for a debate in parliament. Thus far, more than 2,500 have signed a document calling on the government to change the Lower Thames Crossing decision. It is the latest act of defiance against last month’s announcement, after campaigners accused Highways England of manipulating data, and MP Adam Holloway admitted he was “not bothered” by the prospect of losing his Gravesham seat, insisting he felt the decision was bigger than politics. Elsewhere, campaigners are warning small stations in Kent could close in future as they voiced opposition against proposals in which some services between Tonbridge and Ashford would no longer stop at intermediate stations. More than 5,000 have signed that petition, which is one of the fastest-growing in the country this week. Meanwhile, some 27,000 have voiced concern over plans to make services from Dartford terminate at London Cannon Street only, rather than several different termini in the capital. In its official response, the Department for Transport confirmed it is “not proposing to cut specific services” as it asked whether passengers would support the principle of reducing the choice of London termini served from individual stations to provide a more regular timetable and reliable service.

NO ONE MARRIES IN THE EXPECTATION OF SEPARATING, BUT THE STATISTICS ON DIVORCE MAKE FOR SOBERING READING

ouples undergoing the pain of separation often experience high levels of anxiety, for their children, themselves and what the future may hold. Difficult, and very practical, decisions need to be made about whether or not the family home

needs to be sold. Many services are available to help with those decisions, such as mediation, collaborative law, negotiations and the courts, but can these processes be avoided altogether by setting out at the start what will happen in the event of an end?

Can a pre-nuptial agreement help? A pre-nuptial agreement is a way of trying to avoid court proceedings. By entering into a pre-nuptial agreement you plan for what could happen on divorce before you marry. This agreement sets out how your finances should be divided in the event of separation and divorce. The exact terms of the agreement are a matter of negotiation for the individual couple and the agreement must be properly prepared and signed in good time before the date of the marriage. In a number of other countries, including a number of states in the US, prenuptial agreements are binding. Historically, in England and Wales, the situation was not the same. The reason for this is that an agreement in contemplation of divorce is regarded as undermining the institution of marriage. More recently, and in particular in 2010, the court’s views have changed with regard to pre-nuptial agreements. In 2010 the Supreme Court decided the landmark case of Radmacher v Granatino. The case has complex facts, and a detailed judgment, but the key comment is often considered to be: “The court should give effect to a nuptial agreement that is freely entered into by each party with a full appreciation of its implications unless in the circumstances prevailing it would not be fair to hold the parties to the agreement." It still remains the case that pre-nuptial agreements are not binding. The parties cannot agree to exclude the court from making the final decision in resolving finances. The court must decide how much weight to give to the pre-nuptial agreement. In essence, Radmacher suggests that as long as it remains fair, the court should uphold the agreement.

So if the agreement is not binding, what’s the point of having one? If couples separate, they may well chose to follow the terms of the agreement, and in those circumstances, legal involvement would simply be limited to securing a divorce and the steps required to give effect to the agreement. Issues would only arise if one or both of the parties were not prepared to abide by the terms of the agreement. If that is the case, they would need to establish being held to the agreement is not fair. One of the difficulties in advising and drafting prenuptial agreements is that they are in contemplation of an event that may never happen, or if it does happen, it may be a number of years later. The circumstances of the marriage may be radically different from when the prenuptial agreement was signed, the parties may have had children, different health needs may have arisen or the assets may have increased or decreased. How do I draw up an agreement? Given the law surrounding such agreements, consulting a specialist solicitor is desirable. If asked to consider an agreement, the court will not only look at the terms, but the circumstances surrounding the entering into the agreement. Did either party exploit a dominant position? Did the parties take independent legal advice about the terms of the agreement before signature? Although this may seem like an unnecessary expense at the outset of a marriage when everything is rosy in the garden, if it prevents expensive court litigation, in the unhappy event of the marriage failing, it will represent a considerable saving.

Dictionary describes as ‘courage and strength when facing pain or trouble’. The aim of the operation was to mislead the German High Command as to the exact location of the proposed invasion. Fortitude was to lead the enemy into thinking that it would be along the Pas de Calais. For months preparations had been on-going in this country to create a phantom army and in the months preceding D-day, which had been set for June 5, the roads and lanes of Kent were suddenly full of tanks, bulldozers and all means of military hardware. Upon inspection however they were The beach is stormed found to be inflatable dummies which resembled the real thing as accurately as possible. Along the coast from Folkestone to Dover this phantom army would be in full view of the enemy as they looked through their binoculars over the Channel towards the Kent coast. Situated high on the white cliffs of Dover the Shepperton Film Studios had created a fake oil and fuel supply depot constructed from old scrap metal, scaffolding boards and wire mesh to give the impression that this was an oil facility needed to support a large sea-borne invasion. In the harbours of Folkestone, Dover, Ramsgate, and Sheerness there were

inflatable dummy landing craft jostling for position. If Fortitude were to succeed then the impression had to be given that all was being prepared for an invasion across the shortest Channel crossing. With the help of Bletchley Park, known as Station X, German messages were transcribed by operators of the Enigma machine and then re-sent with false messages to confuse the enemy whilst double agents in France were also playing a key role in the deception. High on the cliffs of Kent and Sussex actors dressed as General Montgomery and Winston Churchill would strut around the coastal positions making sure that they were noticed 21 miles away and that news would reach the German High Command that these generals were in charge of the invasion and were checking that all was proceeding accordingly. German records released after the war showed that Hitler and his generals did believe that an attack would come in the Pas de Calais area rather than Normandy. In addition to the action taking place on the ground, in the air a new command known as the second Tactical Air Force was created. Air Force, this was a force formed purely to support the planned allied invasion of Europe. Once again Kent became a vast airfield as airstrips known as Advanced Landing Grounds came into action tasked with the job of softening up the enemy defences along the French coast prior to the actual invasion. With most of the action along the Pas de Calais these fighter/bomber attacks also created the impression that this area was the one chosen for the landings. Since the summer of 1943 these airfields had been built under a cloak of secrecy. Usually close to farms, the landowners allowed their barns and other buildings to be used for domestic purposes whilst the usual sleeping accommodation was in tents placed among the apple and plum orchards. All the airstrips were grass and to ensure allweather capability, Sommerfeld Track was laid. They came into use around six months before D-day but those six months were to prove as hectic as those airfields that had been established longer. Spitfires, Mustangs and Thunderbolts were a constant sight over Kent during that period flying from such LOCAL HISTORY

airfields as Ashford (also known as Great Chart), Brenzett, Headcorn, High Halden, Kingsnorth, Lashenden, Lydd, Newchurch, New Romney, Woodchurch and Staplehurst. Throughout the country 72 sites were selected to be ALGs later being whittled down to 25 of which 23 were eventually built with 11 sites chosen in Kent. Once D-day was over and the allies had a foothold once again on the Continent, the ALGs slowly returned back to agriculture. As history records bad weather on June 5, 1944 caused the invasion force to wait another 24 hours before setting sail. As dawn broke on the 6th, a vast armada of warships, landing crafts and infantry began the assault on the Atlantic Coast but not at Calais as the Germans had anticipated but along the Normandy coast. Thus the opposition was lighter than expected. The deception had worked. Operation ‘Fortitude’ had played its part. Although the war was to last just under another year, the Battle of Normandy was a great tactical victory for the allies and certainly hastened the end of the war to May 1945. a

The Battle of Chatham Anniversary 30th June to 2nd July

The 650th anniversary of the Battle of Chatham, during which Dutch raiders captured HMS Royal Charles, flagship of King Charles II’s fleet while it was anchored in the Medway, will be commemorated at an international conference in the town’s Royal Dockyard Church on 30 June – 2 July. Sponsored, among others, by the Kent Archaeological Society and hosted by the University of Kent’s School of History and the Chatham Dockyard Historic Dock Trust, the programme will include talks by naval historians from the UK and The Netherlands,

a private viewing of this summer’s ‘Breaking the Chain’ exhibition at the dockyard, and a visit to Upnor Castle. The submerged chain, spanning the river at Gillingham, and the massed cannons of Upnor Castle, failed to protect the ‘mothballed’ English naval ships anchored off Chatham, the main English naval base. It was England’s ‘Day of Infamy,’ an ignominious defeat in which 13 warships were gutted and two ships of the line, the Royal Charles and HMS Unity, were towed away as prizes of war. June 2017 WHAT WILL YOUR FATE BE THIS MONTH?

Aries

Gemini

21st Mar - 20th Apr June could become a surprisingly promising time, because the Sun will be as strong as ever. With respect to the work sphere, June really could become a milestone for Aries. If you work for yourself, consider this carefully: could it be that the time has come to grow your business? The romantic front will enable you to radically reassess many positions in life which you have adhered to for such a long time. This will be a good, bright time, but you could easily mess everything up if you are inattentive.

22nd May - 21st June At the current stage, circumstances will unfold quite successfully, and with a certain amount of perseverance, you could surpass even your own conceptions of a happy ending. In the area of work, it’s likely that situations will emerge which will require quick thinking. In the sphere of personal emotions, Geminis will now have a lot of opportunities. This will be a good, promising time, but you will have to make an effort in order to avoid making a critical error.

Taurus

Cancer

21st Apr - 21st May June is highly likely to be a fateful time. It’s hard, however, to say anything specific about how radical the impending developments will be, since almost everything depends on you, as usual. Don’t talk too much, hold your tongue more often, otherwise you could end up in a situation which has no way out without a loss. Be careful with what you express, and at corporate events don’t allow yourself to indulge in excess, otherwise you will ruin your image.

22nd June - 22nd July Vera Wang June 27th

Sagittarius

In June, people born under the sign of Cancer will have to experience quite a few interesting moments. Be prepared for the fact that a large portion of attentiveness will be required of you, although you won’t face any superhuman difficulties, and this is a good thing. The romantic front will be a good time for you. Under no circumstances should you refuse if you are dragged along to a party or a corporate function. Just don’t allow yourself to indulge in excess when it comes to words and your conduct.

23rd Nov - 23rd Dec

In general, you will meet the start of the summer season with all guns blazing, and this means that it would make sense to act promptly and in the most proactive way! When it comes to the work sphere, it would be appropriate to focus on new mutually beneficial agreements. As far as the sphere of personal relationships is concerned, Sagittarius can expect just as much dynamics in June. Don’t let yourself put off dealing with any particular conflict – make a definite decision, without tolerating ambiguity, because otherwise you can expect problems.

Sir Paul McCartney June 18th

Libra

23rd Sep - 23rd Oct

Leo

23rdJuly - 23rd Aug

People born under the Zodiac sign of Leo could receive a lot of benefits in June in situations when others are obviously losing. At work you can expect solid progress, although overall the dynamics of the developments taking place may not meet your expectations completely. On the romantic front, Leo will be able to change a lot of things, although it would make sense to act deliberately. Any negativity can be neutralized, any obstacles can be overcome, provided you are willing to fight.

POSITIVITY DOMINATES AT KENT VISION LIVE

W

ell over 3,000 business managers and entrepreneurs converged on the Kent Event Centre on 10th May for the twelfth edition of the UK’s leading regional business event: Kent Vision LIVE 2017, organised in association with Kent County Council and the KM. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Brexit and next month’s general election, optimism is high within Kent’s rapidly expanding business community, which recently exceeded 100,000 companies for the first time ever. Kicking off the main event at 9.30am was ITV’s Robert Peston, one of the UK’s best-known commentators on the increasingly complex world of economics, business and politics. With every seat occupied, the event organisers had to stream a live videolink of Robert’s opening keynote into an adjacent room to accommodate latecomers. Drawing on a combination of current and historical trends, Robert outlined the underlying socio-economic factors behind recent shocks to the ‘traditional’ world order, including the unexpected result of the Brexit referendum, Donald Trump’s rise to power in the United States and the election of a political outsider in France. Additional highlights included inspirational success stories from Frazer Thompson of Chapel Down Group, TV Chef and local entrepreneur Rosemary Shrager

and Dragon’s Den star Caner Veli from Liquiproof. Rugby legend Mike Tindall was posing for selfies with visitors on the Hospitality Finder stand and over a hundred of the county’s largest and fastestgrowing businesses came together for a special VIP Lunch, hosted by Brachers and Grant Thornton with a live debate chaired by the IoD’s chief economist James Sproule. On the main floor of the exhibition, four focused seminar streams focused on the latest developments in marketing, business technology, employment challenges and support for new businesses.By the end of the day, both visitors and exhibitors were buzzing with excitement about the overall sense of optimism that had permeated through the event, as well as the high quality of the people they had met.If you missed the event (or even if you didn’t), you can watch a condensed version of the day in a short highlights video, filmed and produced by event partner Lavender Blue Media on You Tube. The next Kent Vision LIVE event will take place on Wednesday 16th May 2018.
