Kent Ferrari AN AREA GROUP OF THE FERRARI OWNERS’ CLUB OF GREAT BRITAIN
Anniversary Ball An evening celebrating 50 years of the Club

Welcome 05
To yet another Kent Ferrari Summer Ball, where we are celebrating 50 years of the Ferrari Owners’ club of Great Britain.
F
ounded in 1967 by a small group of enthusiastic members of the Bugatti Owner’s Club (BOC) who had just bought into the relatively new marque of Ferrari. The Club’s ranks gradually swelled, thanks in part to support of the great Enzo Ferrari himself, remining part of the BOC until becoming truely independant in 1976. The Club is run by a Chairman and Board of Directors supported by a Committee of Management and currently has 2,900 members across the United Kingdom. Ferrari enthusiasts in Britain hail from all walks of life. In fact, our owners here include singers, actors, engineers, architects, doctors, salesmen, scientists and writers…and the percentage of lady Ferrari owners is growing all the time too. Sally and Myself would like to express our thanks to all members for their continued support and the sponsors who have made this evening possible.

A few words from John Anderson, our President
D ear All
I
am truly sorry not to be with you for what promises to be yet another terrific event for the Kent Area Group. It is with great admiration that I have witnessed the Group thrive and blossom under the Organiser, Peter Critchell, fully supported by Sally, and in so doing raise enormous amounts of money for worthy causes, especially from their splendid Annual Balls. I first met Peter when having just been elected Club Chairman. We held the first Ferrari Owners Club Meeting for Area Organisers back in 1994, and since then each year they seem to surpass previous triumphs. The Ball this evening to celebrate 50 years of the Ferrari Owners Club is bound to be yet another enjoyable and hugely successful affair. Have fun!

Ferrari 250GT Lusso 09

T
his car was first sold by Franco Britannica Automobiles in Paris in 1964 to a UNESCO employee with diplomatic plates. The car then had two further owners in France before being purchased by myself in 2009 and brought to the UK. The car was then fully restored to its original specification. When the car was stripped down and soda blasted, we discovered no rust or damage to the body. It was in remarkable condition. In fact, as the car was stripped down we found everything still had the original chassis number on the parts, including headlining , door cards, headlamp rims etc. This was truly an original Lusso. I then made the decision to rebuild the car maintaining as many original parts as possible. This included the leather seats, headlining and airhorns etc.
The engine, gearbox and axle are original with confirmed number stampings. The body was subject to a bare metal respray in its original colour of Rosso Cina. Whilst the internal seats, carpets and trim are all original. The car today looks like it did in 1964 but the original interior now shows its age with much patina.
James Needham I love it and I drive it.

John Surtees, CBE 10
A Genius who existed in his own super-league written by Mike Nicks
O
n the last weekend of June 1960, the Formula 1 family gathered at Monaco, where Stirling Moss, in a Lotus-Climax, would defeat Bruce McLaren, in a Cooper-Climax, on the 1.9mile principality circuit. For John Surtees it was a frustrating race, his 2.5-litre Lotus-Climax expiring early with a broken final drive. The circus then headed for the Dutch Grand Prix a week later at the Zandvoort circuit. But John was not among the drivers, for he had a very different commitment. He was to plunge and twist his way around the 37.73-mile Mountain Circuit in the Isle of Man on his 350 and 500cc MV-Agusta motorcycles. He finished second in the Junior TT on the 350, and won the Senior TT on the bigger bike, setting a new lap record of 104.08mph. A month later, and now back in the Lotus, he was at Silverstone, where he achieved his first Formula 1 podium in only the eighth car race of his life. In August on the Boavista circuit in Portugal he earned his first F1 pole and fastest lap, although a crash due to inexperience on four wheels cost him the chance of a victory when he was leading easily (he would have to wait till the following year to gain his first F1 win). In September at Monza, John concluded his motorcycle season with a win in the 500cc race, as he drifted the 70bhp MV through the Parabolica and Lesmo corners. The spoils of that frenetic season of 18 car and 16 motorcycle races was ten grand prix wins on two wheels, and his first Formula 1 podium and pole. In total, he raced seven different types of vehicle in five different racing classes - the 350 and 500cc MVs, the Formula 1 Lotus, a Cooper-

Climax and a Porsche 718 in Formula 2, and Cooper-Austin and Lotus-Ford cars in Formula Junior. There never was a such a whirlwind of speed as John Surtees, and there probably never will be for as long as motorsport exists. John continued this pattern of existing in two worlds throughout the rest of life. In 1988 he was invited to a classic motorcycle event at Misano in Italy, and agreed to demonstrate MV and Benelli four-cylinder motorcycles. Then Mercedes-Benz asked him to drive a 1939 W154 three-litre V12 on a Vintage Sports Car Club event at Silverstone on the Saturday of the same weekend. The JS solution: please the fans at both venues by tailsliding the ex-Rudolf Caracciola Mercedes at Silverstone and flying overnight to adapt to the

motorcycles, where he had a tyre contact patch the size of a credit card. At Goodwood’s Festival of Speed in recent years, John would happily skip from motorcycle leathers to driving suit. The closest there has been to John Surtees was Tazio Nuvolari, who won 350 cc European motorcycling championships on a 350cc Bianchi, and then achieved fame in Alfa Romeo and Auto-Union cars. Nuvolari won 72 major races, including 24 Grands Prix, five Coppa Cianos, two Mille Miglias, two Targa Florios, two RAC Tourist Trophies, a Le Mans 24-hour race, and a European Championship in Grand Prix racing. As it is, only JS has the accolade of being the only world champion on two and four wheels. When lists of the greatest ever Formula 1 and motorcycle competitors are compiled, John rarely figures in a podium position. Other riders and drivers have totted up more world championships. But Giacomo Agostini, the numerically most successful motorcyclist with 15 titles, and Michael Schumacher, with seven titles on four wheels, devoted their entire careers to their one particular discipline. John Surtees created, by accident really, his own category. In 1960, at the age of 26, and the owner
of seven world motorcycle titles by the end of the season, he wanted a fresh challenge. Colin Chapman and Ken Tyrell were among those in the car world who identified his talent and opened doors for him. What was it that made John so uniquely versatile? When you talked to him about cars and bikes, you would hear him use the word “relationship” a lot. John always wanted to build a relationship with the vehicle - he wanted to sense what it was doing in every way possible, through the palms of his hands and his fingertips, through his backside in the seat or on the saddle, through his thighs (which gripped a motorcycle’s fuel tank), through his feet and through his ears, which tracked an engine’s pitch monitored mechanical and tyre noises. It was that ability to develop a relationship with the machinery that made him such a formidable competitor. My personal feeling, having known John for more than 30 years, and having followed motorsport for all of my life, is that he exists in a super-category where he is No 1 in a field of one, at least in terms of motorsport in its modern postwar version. He will probably never have a challenger.

Simply Sax 22
Simply Sax Duo is an alternative line-up to the Simply Sax Solo act
S
ince starting my solo act in 2012, I decided to form a duo with a very old friend of mine who I met when we played in a band as teenagers. Both of us were classically trained, myself with Clarinet being my principle instrument and Paula having Flute as her principle instrument. Over the years, we have both learned the same instruments, Clarinet, Flute, Piccolo, Piano and of course, Saxophone. We both play Soprano, Tenor, Baritone and our favourite, Alto sax. Since our teenage years, we have both worked professionally and travelled the world with our music. Today, we join forces to provide a distinctive female sax duo, playing a variety of music for Corporate functions and Private events. From wedding receptions to large black tie galas, our background music brings a wonderful ambience to get your event started and leave it with a great talking point.

I had no idea how I was going to squeeze live music into our small office but you were the perfect choice. The 45 minute set you did during our drinks reception was just enough to get the evening off to the right start and made a great impact.

Sue & Paula
I personally found your music to be absolutely amazing and having a real interest in the Saxophone myself, I can find that I’m critical about my music I listen to and your standard was truly fantastic.

We hope you enjoy the music we have to offer.
