Welcome

Well, well, well, what an overwhelming welcome we at mmm have had from you - our readers, advertisers, local businesses and everyone else too. We feel priviledged by the input so many of you have given us, making suggestions which enabled mmm to become the magazine you see today (thanks to Kim Manchett and Mary-Jo Parham). The warm reception of mmm certainly exceeded our expectations, and so yours as well. Here are just a few snippets of the reaction people had to the birth of mmm n I’m very impressed and well done Chris Williams, VMA Advertising n It certainly has a ‘wow’ factor Alan Wright, Wright’s Warehouse n It’s more than you’d expect from a free magazine Lyne Boyd, Royal Star Arcade n Good is not a strong enough word - it’s fantastic Jaine Rees, Fremlin Walk n I thoroughly enjoyed every article Fran Burt, County Square How can we not feel uplifted and pleased when our offering has been so well received? On top of that the sun’s finally started to shine, and lift us too. So we want you to join us - turn up the radio, add a spring to your step, and wake up to the feeling of optimism the spring always brings. The March issue of mmm is full of ways to inspire you to continue feeling great. We also have a few suggestions for happy couples preparing to tie the knot and - more importantly for this month - we’re celebrating the most important women in our lives. If you’ve still not bought a gift for Mothers’ Day here are a number of ideas to assist you. We’ve even met a marvellous Mum and followed her journey to looking and feeling beautiful with a gorgeous makeover. What a fantastic gift this could be? So here’s to a great start to spring - to longer evenings and warmer days. Enjoy,

Keeping it real mmm 11

Gemma Arterton swept onto the big screen just five years ago when she ruled the school as a troublesome teen, having since moved on to play such varied roles as a Bond girl and a kidnap victim, the Kentish maiden insists that she’s still just a normal girl. Tom White finds out more about this talented, rising star.

L

ike a cool rain shower on a hot and humid day, actress Gemma Arterton is a thoroughly refreshing experience. In an entertainment world filled with rampant egos and the expectation of adulation and special treatment, Gemma is a different proposition. “The minute anyone says ‘Oh my God! You’re so amazing’, I just have to go ‘shut up! Please!’ I am normal,” she says of her fame and success thus far, “I have just one rule - don’t believe the hype.” But hype is what surrounds her right now. At 26 she has already chalked up a string of big movie hits, from out-andout blockbusters - Clash of the Titans, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Quantum of Solace - to critically acclaimed dramas such as big screen outing The Disappearance of Alice Creed and the BBC’s adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic Tess of the D’Urbervilles. Yet she remains determined not to allow her success to make her lose touch with reality - or to conform to convention. “When you put yourself in these huge popcorn movies you get out there, in the public arena, more than anyone else,” she reflects, “but that also a

12 mmm

a means that you’re out there to be criticised more than anyone else is. “Because, for some reason, if you’re successful in Britain, people tend not to like you. But if you’re a successful woman, and beautiful, in Britain, you’re even more disliked.” Yet it is very hard to dislike Gemma. She is strong-minded, determined not to be pigeonholed as a cliched female role in a male-dominated industry, and has risen from the streets of Kent to global stardom. Although, she admits, not everything has remained with her from her days growing up in Gravesend. “When I was at RADA [The Royal Acadamy of Dramatic Art] they said I should try and change my voice and get rid of the Kentish twang. One particular teacher told me it wasn’t going to do me any favours. “And so I did, but now it’s just found its own ‘estuarine’ sound. It’s funny because people do judge you by how you talk. It comes and goes. If I go back home, or I’m with my Dad for 10 minutes, it comes back. If I have a drink it comes back.” She was both eye-catching and different from the second she emerged from her mother. Born in 1986, she had polydactyly - which gave her 12 fingers, undergoing surgery to have the two extra digits removed. Her parents, Sally-Anne, a cleaner and Barry, a welder, separated when she was just five years old. Little Gemma was brought up with her sister, Hannah, by their mother on a council estate in Gravesend. It would prove to be a hugely influential time in her life that would equip her with the necessary determination and powerful sense of worth which would work to her credit in years to come. “I was brought up by my single mum and my aunt, and both women were very instrumental in my a

14 mmm

a upbringing,” she says of her childhood. “My aunt is a lesbian and very, very feminist. I was brought up by these two women who were very independent. “It was never a case of hating men or anything like that - just that we all signed up to the fact it’s good to be a woman.” After attending Gravesend Grammar School for Girls, she studied drama at North West Kent College before training at RADA. The roles started coming in before she had even left the classroom. In 2007 she appeared in director Stephen Poliakoff’s Caputuring Mary for TV. Later that year, having graduated from RADA, she hit the silver screen with a starring role in the latest remake of St Trinian’s. A star was in the ascendancy, and a year later she beat off competition from 1,500 people to star alongside Daniel Craig’s James Bond in his second outing as 007 in Quantum of Solace. The role of Strawberry Fields - “the thinking man’s crumpet” as she describes the character made sure her name became internationally known. But while starring with the man

with a licence to kill is a great career move, it can also become something of a weight around your neck, pulling your future aspirations down and pigeon-holing you in the

minds of casting teams. When well-respected movie magazine Empire named her winner of its Best Newcomer Award, Gemma made sure she looked a

a to broaden her appeal and shift away from Bond. And so she took refuge on the stage with a West End debut in The Little Dog Laughed, before returning to the big screen with roles in blockbuster Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time as well as Tamara Drewe. In a distinct shift away from the glamourous side of the business, she also took on a role in the sometimes harrowing The Disappearance of Alice Creed. For that and her role in Tamara Drewe, she would receive nominations for several BAFTA awards. All of which means her career is very much on the right track just now - and she has no plans of simply accepting any old role to keep her profile high. She explained: “Lots of roles I’ve done in the past have served their purpose. But I come from a theatre background and I never imagined myself in some of the films I’ve ended up in.” Nor is she going to sell her natural beauty as the key reason why she deserves the best roles. In fact, when she stripped down to her underwear a couple of years ago for a men’s magazine shoot, her mother expressed her displeasure and Gemma vowed never to do it again. “I suppose it was quite sexy, but when it came out I felt awkward about it - like I’d done something dirty.” For now, though, there’s no stopping her. Having tied the knot with sales manager Stefano Catelli in a secret ceremony in Andalucia, Spain, in June 2010 - she keeps their relationship a private issue - she is now filming her latest movie. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters a modern spin on the classic fairtytale which is due to hit the cinemas next year. And she seems set, thankfully, to keep her feet rooted in reality. “We do get these amazing perks with our jobs, like going to Paris and staying in a nice hotel,” she says, “but I still go into a hotel room and it excites me. I go round opening all the drawers, looking at the minibar. I don’t take any of this for granted.” Get used to Gemma Arterton and prepare to be thoroughly won over by her. mmm

Hundreds of shoppers turned out to watch the four fashion shows which took place recently at County Square Shopping Centre in Ashford. Audiences were delighted to see a huge selection of inspirational new season outfits from the fashion brands at County Square, and with the sun shining through the roof of the centre, spring really did seem to have arrived. As well as the bright and bold fashions from the newly extended Dorothy Perkins and Wallis, located within BHS, and the 60s-inspired geometric Milly Miami range at River Island, there were more tailored

The new Internacionale store, which opened in the winter, was featured by the fashionable teens from FTD Dance Centre and with the sophisticated fashions from Designers at Debenhams, the shows catered for everyone. However, it was the little ones who stole the show, modelling children’s ranges from M&S and BHS. The crowds clapped and cheered as the youngsters took to the catwalk getting braver and cheekier as the show went on! See the website at www.county squareshoppingcentre.com to find out more.

hen planning a wedding you always start with a list - dress, venue, rings flowers... it tends to be quite long. As the list get longer, the costs get higher, and so things start to be crossed off. After all, do you really need that 50th floral piece to ensure the men’s loos match your colour scheme? We didn’t think so either. But if there’s one thing you should never, ever, cross off the list or - even worse - replace with an enthusiastic relative, then it’s the wedding photographer. Professional and experienced, they are the people who capture not only the joy and happiness of your big day, but also ensure you really do remember every little thing from that overly long prewedding list. At least, we’ve never met an Uncle Arthur who’s remembered to take a picture of the bouquet, or knows just how much the bride loves her shoes to record them before they’re worn. Little details make your big day truly special, and choosing a photographer who appreciates what all the details mean to you is vital for helping you to remember

what will most likely pass in a blur of smiles and happiness. You may be tempted to cross photographer off your list when Uncle Arthur steps forward, but will he really do justice to the day you’ve spent so many months - or possibly years - organising? Put simply, if you’re spending thousands on your wedding do you really want to run the risk that your only record of your efforts will be a few blurry prints? Or worse, out of shadows from the snap happy small children who ran around the reception taking advantage of the cheap disposables you left on the tables? With this in mind, we have one key piece of advice for choosing who will be capturing the memory of your wedding day: Meet the photographer first. Not only will this allow you to decide if you like this extra person who’ll be turning up for your wedding, it will also be a chance to discuss what’s important about your own personal big day. At the meeting you can choose any specific pictures that simply must appear in your album too so you know you really are getting value for money and not just a person who bought a camera.

n Laura from Lollypop Photography says: “We believe that you should love not only the end results but also having your photograph taken too. Which is why we make it fun, never cheesy, we don’t boss your guests and we don’t get in the way.”

Being creative means using more than one style of photography. Lollypop combine candid moments of laughter, emotion and happiness with beautiful details of all the little things that make up your day, plus imaginative portraits to make a collection of images you will love. If you’d like to meet up, say hello and have a nice cup of tea with Lollypop, please get in touch. Contact Laura on 01634 251832 or e-mail hello@lollypopphoto.com. Or see www.lollypopphoto.com

mmm 35 Jillian Aslet, House of Fraser Wedding List Manager, offers some top tips for couples who are thinking about setting up a wedding list 1. It’s never too early to start thinking about what you want on your list. 2. Don’t just focus on the day-to-day items you need, your wedding list is a real chance to upgrade and ask for beautiful items to build your dream home together. 3. Make sure there is plenty of choice by picking enough items for around two thirds of your guests, for instance 150 guests = 100 gifts. This allows for couples and families who might be sharing gifts. 4. Include a range of gifts at different prices as you will have guests who want to buy a small token and also family members or groups who may want to buy something bigger. 5. When choosing gifts, remember that it’s not just what you see in store, there’s a huge range online too. 6. Finally, you can add and remove items easily so don’t worry if you forget something when you first create the list. The wedding list is available at www.houseoffraserweddinglist.co.uk, email weddinglist@fraserline.co.uk or call 0844 800 0535.

Rely on your cruise expert to advise you as to the best part of the ship to stay in and why. n On safari, make sure you have at least two nights with a total of four game drives for maximising your chances of seeing the wildlife in the area. n When taking a long haul flight over several time zones have a glass of carrot juice every day for a couple of days before you fly - it will help with the jet-lag and you'll arrive feeling more refreshed. n A couple of drops of tea-tree oil under the nostrils will help to keep away in-flight bugs. T

Kuoni’s Siobhan Lillis discovers a Mauritian resort with a difference here’s no doubt that the exotic island of Mauritius is home to some of the world’s finest resorts. Many of these are traditionally Mauritian, and they’re all absolutely beautiful, but once in a while a resort pops up that’s just a little bit different – and that’s exactly what I found at Long Beach. New to Mauritius’ east coast in 2011, Long Beach enjoys a stunning beachfront location typical of many luxury resorts on the

island, but it’s the interesting modern architecture and cool atmosphere that provide its unique look and feel. Upon arrival, you are greeted with a wide, open manicured lawn leading out to the sprawling beach. An urban-style piazza reminiscent of a vibrant city square forms the resort’s focal point, surrounded by restaurants, a bar and the small funky nightclub, Bombora. The diverse dining at Long Beach was a real highlight. One evening, our group of friends enjoyed a Chinese starter of lamian a

a noodles, spicy lobster and melt-in-the-mouth roasted duck at Chopsticks; a grilled beef main course cooked right in front of us, teppanyaki-style, at the Japanese restaurant, Hasu; and mouthwatering desserts including crème brûlée, tiramisu, chocolate fondant and caramel tapioca at Sapori, the Italian food court. A true dine-around experience. Another night we sampled tropical daiquiris by the pool before dining on fresh fish at the seafood restaurant, Tides. The spa looked fantastic, with modern treatment rooms and tranquil outdoor spaces. I didn’t have a treatment but, had I spent longer here, I would have loved to indulge with a massage in the secluded outdoor area by the lagoon. Long Beach also caters well for families, with sizeable family rooms, a kids’ club, teens’ club, two large swimming pools and plenty of activities to keep children entertained. Most of these activities are complimentary, from a climbing wall to kayaking and windsurfing. All rooms at Long Beach have a view of the ocean. My standard seaview room on the first floor looked over the top of singlestorey rooms out to the glistening waters, and it was wonderful opening the curtains in the mornings to be met with that glorious view. The room was spacious, light and airy, and open-plan, with the bathroom area divided from the bedroom by a half wall, with one cubicle for the toilet, another for the rain shower, and a bath in between. This created clean lines through the room all the way out to the large, private balcony. The décor was chic and stylish, the television was large, and the kingsize bed super comfortable. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or looking for a more active escape, Long Beach is an excellent choice. mmm

FOOD Seabass with garlic and lemon butter Serves 4 Preparation 5mins, Cooking 10mins

Ingredients Sea Bass 30ml/2tbsp butter 600g sea bass fillets salt and freshly ground pepper Method Melt the butter in a large frying pan. Fry sea bass, turning once halfway through cooking time. Cook until opaque and moist on the inside, 4 to 8 minutes. For the sauce Garlic Lemon Butter Sauce 4 cloves garlic, crushed 60g (2 oz) butter juice of 1 lemon Method In a small saucepan, gently melt the butter. When it starts sizzling add the garlic and let it sizzle for a minute or two, allowing the garlic to infuse the butter. Lower the heat to the minimum setting, add the lemon juice, stir and let it heat through. Season to taste. Drizzle over the fish fillets when it served. Serving suggestion Fish is generally perfect with anything, but we recommend a few particular accompaniments for this dish. Boil some new potatoes and allow them to cool. Then fry them with some butter in a large frying pan until crisp. At the last minute throw in some red pepper and flash fry for a few minutes. Also, lightly steam a few green vegetables to keep the dish fresh. Asparagus are great, but for the seasonal purist a few frozen peas are a great option too.

Leek and bacon risotto Serves 4 Preparation 10mins Cooking 20mins

Ingredients 15ml/1tbsp olive oil 8 rashers bacon 4 leeks, sliced 350g (12 oz) risotto rice 200ml (6.5 fl oz) white wine 800ml (1.5 pint) hot veg stock grated parmesan, optional Method Heat the oil in a big pot and fry the bacon to your liking (just cooked or very crispy). Remove the bacon. When it has cooled, chop it into bite-sized pieces. Add the leeks to the pot and

fry for 2 minutes until starting to soften. Stir in the rice and cook for 1 minute, stirring. Add the wine and stock, and then bring to the boil. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 10-12 minutes until the rice is tender.

Honey glazed rack of lamb Serves 2 Preparation 15mins Cooking 30mins

Ingredients 1x 8 bone rack of lamb salt and pepper butter olive oil 15ml/1tbsp butter golden honey Method Preheat the oven to 240째C or Gas Mark 7. Season the lamb with salt and pepper. In a pan melt some butter and a splash of olive oil. Seal the lamb on both sides until nicely brown. Put foil on the bones to prevent them from burning in the oven. Place the lamb in the hot oven for 15-20 minutes, which will cook the meat to medium. Remove the lamb and allow to rest for a good 5 minutes.

Brush the skin on the lamb with honey and serve. Serving suggestion Office opinion varied, but the majority insisted on buttered new potatoes, carrots and spinach.

Playground of the rich I

Think Leeds Castle is all about Henry VIII and times gone by? Then think again, Tom White takes a look at its fascinating recent history, which includes hosting film stars and momentous political events. T is easy to get lost in the long, rich history of Leeds Castle. Easy to think of kings and queens, battle feasts and silver and gold. But the footsteps you follow in from a more modern era may rather surprise you. From Hollywood's finest to modern day princes and princesses, the castle's more recent past proves almost as fascinating as that of hundreds of years ago. Soirees before the Second World War would see top politicians mingle

with the likes of Charlie Chaplin and swashbuckling hero Errol Flynn and during the conflict itself the castle was transformed from private residence to hospital; treating airmen who were injured while defending their country. The recent history of Leeds Castle can frequently surprise. For many locals, the events of September 2004 within the grounds of Leeds Castle passed them by. Yet just eight years ago it was once again elevated onto the political top table.

For three days, the site - which was more used to attracting thousands of visitors amid its carefully manicured grounds and magnificent moat - was ringed by armed guards and sniffer dogs. The latest chapter in Leeds Castle's remarkable history was about to be written. Because the castle, one of the jewels in Kent's tourism portfolio, was holding crunch talks in efforts to grind out a final resolve and bring peace to Northern Ireland. Six years after the Good Friday

peace deal, the peace process had stalled and needed kick-starting. And so then Prime Minister Tony Blair and his Irish counterpart Bertie Ahern entered the castle's walls and spent 72-hours in tough bargaining with republicans and unionists. Hopes of a deal to ensure peace failed to materialise - but leaders left the Maidstone site feeling "cautiously optimistic". The rest, as they say, is history. Which for Leeds Castle is more than appropriate. Because to say it is steeped in history is as much an

understatement as saying that Henry VIII was quite influential when he held court. It sweats the past from each and every pore - and owes much to the aforementioned king for its current place in the psyche of both the local and wider population. His decision in 1519 to transform it for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, saw it leave behind its feudal past and elevated into a place of splendour and envy, blessed by the most senior figure in society. This effectively cemented

the castle’s future, some 400 years after it was first built by Robert de Crevecoeur as a Norman stronghold. It replaced the earlier Saxon manor of Esledes - from which its name would evolve - and was no stranger to royal patronage, having become a royal palace for King Edward I in 1278. But its royal history has been well documented and recounted many times. Of more interest, certainly for those who live locally, is that the castle a

a was in private ownership and thus closed to the public until a little under 40 years ago. It was only when Lady Baillie, who bought the castle in 1926, died in 1974 that it ceased to be simply a stately retreat and became a key player in the community. Born in the States 1899, Olive Cecilia Paget was an AngloAmerican heiress. Her parents were Englishman Almeric Paget and American Pauline Whitney the daughter and heiress of William C Whitney, a financier and politician who had served in President Cleveland's cabinet as US Secretary of the Navy. When her mother died in 1916 both Olive and her sister inherited a fortune. Educated in France, she served as a nurse during the Great War and in 1919, married the Honourable Charles Winn. The

marriage only lasted six years, however, and before 1925 was out she married Arthur Wilson Filmer Two years into married life the Wilson Filmers snapped up Leeds Castle. Then in poor condition - it had stood empty for a few years - it would perhaps become Olive's enduring romance. She invested millions of her inherited fortune into transforming the site, taming the overgrown grounds, and making it a home once more. A leading French designer worked on the interior, while a top architect assisted in turning areas outside into something to be proud of. Yet while the work continued and the castle blossomed, again Olive's marriage did not. The couple divorced in 1931, but Olive retained possession of the castle. Again, it did not take long to find

a new man in her life - marrying Sir Adrian Baillie, 5th Baronet, later that year, and in doing so collecting the title of Lady Baillie. It would herald a return to glamour for the castle. Spending much of the week at a house in London, the couple would host extravagant parties at the weekends. And the roll-call was impressive. Over the years, those attending included the Prince of Wales and Mrs Simpson, who joined royals and politicians from across Europe and the cream of the entertainment world; Charlie Chaplin and Errol Flynn visited, as did Douglas Fairbanks, James Stewart and, later, Ian Fleming the writer and creator of James Bond, who lived in Kent. During the Second World War, the glitz was put on hold and the castle took on a far more a

a practical purpose - becoming a temporary hospital to help treat the wounded. Lady Baillie and her daughters helped treat the injured particularly Commonwealth airmen who had sufffered terrible burns. But happiness with Sir Adrian would not see the war out. In 1944 they divorced. He would die three years later. Lady Baillie would not marry again. As with most sectors of society, the environment after the ceasefire was different to that which had been enjoyed in the 1930s. The parties returned to the castle but on a smaller scale. They were no less glamourous however, with the Queen and Queen Mother among the guests. In the 1950s Lady Baillie's health began to pay the price for years of smoking, and by the 1970s she was dependent on oxygen and a resident nurse. Aware her time was coming to an end, she set about securing the future of the castle and estate. She did not want her home

to be taken over by the National Trust, and wanted it to become a valuable part of the community. Thus, when she passed, she left the property to the Leeds Castle Foundation, a private charitable trust whose aim is to preserve the castle and its grounds for the benefit of the public in perpetuity. Explains a spokesman for the trust: "In accordance with her wishes, the castle is kept as a living house, with bedrooms that regularly accommodate guests at weddings, conferences and banquets. "In the last 30 years more than 10 million people have visited the castle. "It costs around ÂŁ2.7 million each year to maintain the castle and keep it looking so beautiful. "The charity achieves this through the income it generates from visitors and events. Generally, it receives no grant funding or any government support. Every penny donated is ploughed back into long-term preservation projects." Lady Baillie died on September

9, 1974, at a hospital in London. Her estate amounted to more than £4 million and her passing saw Leeds Castle at another crossroads in its history. No longer was it simply an imposing site on the landscape now it was a living, breathing key component of both Maidstone and the county as a whole. Today it is a key generator of revenues for the local economy – delivering thousands of visitors; who also come to local shops, stay in hotels and generally spend their money in Kent. Since opening to the public in 1976 the castle has hosted everything from pop concerts to wedding fairs and has established itself as a major venue for a variety of events, in addition to a leading tourist attraction. But then it is the sign of a building of genuine significance that it continues to create history and continues to play a key role in society, so many hundreds of years after the past it trades so heavily on have passed. mmm

MOTORS Mazda

A new generation MAZDA takes a step into the future at this month's Geneva International Motor Show when it unveils its Takeri concept car. Billed as a “next-generation mid-sized saloon” the vehicle includes a whole host of new features, including new braking technology and a fuel-saving stopping system. The i-ELOOP system, or the Intelligent Energy Loop, apparently converts kinetic energy into electricity during deceleration and then stores it in an electic double-layer capacitor.

Flagship launch KIA may still struggle to overcome those for whom a car badge is as much a fashion statement

This means the power is used to run the vehicle's electric components, thereby reducing the load on the engine and increasing fuel economy by up to 10 per cent. It will be joined on stage by the new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV and the MX-5 Venture Edition – its spring 2012 model. The 82nd Geneva show will be taking place from March 8-18.

as anything else, but it hopes its all-new flagship sedan will help bridge that gap. Its first rear-wheel drive vehicle is expected to be launched in the Korean market over the coming months – and recently

it revealed the first official sketches of a vehicle it hopes will establish new standards for design flair in the large sedan market. Codenamed KH, the new model combines innovative design with high-tech features. Soon-Nam Lee, Kia’s director of the overseas marketing group, said: “Our all-new flagship sedan integrates all of our key capabilities such as design, performance, high-tech features and infotainment into one striking model. “Although launch timings for overseas markets are yet to be confirmed, this all-new rear-wheel drive large sedan will definitely become the leading model of our line-up around the world, showcasing the best of the best of Kia.”

GADGETS IF you thought the tablet wars were almost at their conclusion, you haven't, to coin a phrase, seen nothing yet. Apple's domination of the sector with its trailblazing iPad has certainly had its competitors, but none which have emerged as truly genuine contenders to the throne. Until now... Amazon, fresh from having revolutionised the digital book market courtesy of its Kindle, in much the same way Apple did with iTunes and music, has unveiled its iPad competitor - the Kindle Fire. It may be smaller and less powerful, but it's secret weapon is its price point. While, at the time of going to print, the UK price has yet to be confirmed, in the US it went on sale at $199 - the equivalent of ÂŁ125. Should that price cross the Atlantic - or be within ÂŁ50 - it is surely set to give Apple - and its ÂŁ400 iPads - a genuine run for its money. Plus it sets up a rather delicious battle. Apple this month unveils the iPad 3 - the latest generation of its touch screen behometh - vowing to bring an even higher-resolution screen and a faster chip set. The smart money is also on it having the ability to harness the super fast speeds of 4G for mobile use. It may be more of an evolutionary rather than revolutionary step, but such was the tweak between the first and second generation, and sales still built at a rapid speed. The chances are, of course, that Apple will continue to build its customer base - especially among the style conscious and those who want to be at the cutting edge. But for everyone else, the

Kindle Fire is looking likely to provide a price-competitive rival which may just have that all important mass-market appeal. Granted, the Kindle Fire will not be as fully featured as the iPad, or boast such a large screen - it will be Kindle-sized at seven inches compared to the iPad's 10-incher - but it will come capable of displaying films, playing music and, naturally, buying books from Amazonbacked online stores. However its shortcomings - hard drive space is just 8Gb with no external storage options - no camera, no GPS capabilities and suspect speakers are likely to be obscured by an entry price point which will convince even the doubters that now is the time to take the plunge. And Apple will no doubt be concerned - however much they may publicly mock it. With suggestions that Amazon will unleash a nine-inch screen version later this year, and the company clearly prepared to take a big hit on the hardware in order to reap the rewards of pushing users its digital content, it will offer a viable option to the Apple iPad 3. And if neither the iPad or Kindle Fire float your boat, then there's the prospect of Windows 8-enabled tablets hitting the market later this year - promising to come equipped with Office components and being hotly tipped to enliven the tablet marketplace even more. Make no mistake, 2012 is likely to be the year when the tablet wars hot up and the customer, just for once, could be the main beneficiary. The iPad 3 is expected in the stores this month - price to be confirmed but expect entry models to be around the ÂŁ400 mark. As for the Amazon Kindle Fire, the release date for the UK had not been confirmed at the time of going to press, nor has its UK price. But current estimates expect it to retail around ÂŁ150, give or take ÂŁ25.

The Avengers Release: April 27

Take some of the biggest superheroes, blend them with Hollywood's hottest property, cook with a massive budget and the result may well prove to be this year's biggest hit. The Avengers is the latest movie to emerge from the Marvel stables and rather than just showcasing one of its creations, a whole host of characters including Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, join forces to help save the world, from aliens. Among those starring are Robert Downey Jnr, Chris Evans, Samuel L Jackson, Paul Bettany, Scarlett Johnansson and Gwyneth Paltrow. Just don't confuse it with the remake of the cult TV series – that was a big budget flop. This is likely to be anything but.

A Dangerous Method Out now

If superheroes don't float your boat, then this may be rather more suitable. Set on the eve of World War I, it focuses on the relationships between psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, founder of analytical psychology Carl Jung and Sabina Spielrein – a patient of Jung's who later becomes one of the first female psychoanalysts. Adapted by an Academy Award-winning writer from an original book by John Kerr, which in turn was turned into a stage play, the Talking Cure, it stars the talents of Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender and Vincent Cassel. What's more, it has proved a hit with the critics too and should be one of the more intriguing reasons to head to the cinema this spring.

Salmon Fishing in Yemen Release: April 20

A British romantic comedy-drama, this may not appeal to the masses, but promises enough charm to win over an audience on the silver screen. It charts the story of fisheries scientist Dr Alfred Jones – a man for whom life does not present much excitement. Until, that is, he becomes involved in a project to bring salmon fishing to the Highlands of the Yemen. It is a project which will change both his life and the course of British political history. Based on a novel by Paul Torday, it was shot on location in London, Scotland and Morocco and features the talents of Ewan McGregor, Kristin Scott Thomas and Emily Blunt. It is directed by Lasse Hallstrom.

STAGE Marilyn, an exhibition

Madonna

Hyde Park, July 17 The Queen of Pop bounces back into London this summer after unveiling details of an enormous outdoor show. The Material Girl – who famously headlined Radio One's Big Weekend show at Maidstone's Mote Park in 2008 – will be staging the show as part of a seven-month worldwide tour. Returning to the city she once called home, Ms Ciccone may be entering her mid-50s, but her star power shows no sign of decline. Having kicked off the year with a high profile show as the half-time entertainment during the Super Bowl, she followed this up by confirming she'll be in London for Hyde Park on Tuesday, July 17 – before heading to Scotland and a show at Murrayfield on July 21. The shows will be promoting her 12th studio album – MDNA – the follow-up to the Hard Candy longplayer which announced her return to the top of the charts four years ago. The London date went on sale in February, so gold circle tickets will probably be like gold dust. For tickets and further details see www.livenation.co.uk

1985 smash I Knew Him So Well – is now into a remarkable seventh decade of making music. Her performance on May 5 will

coincide with the annual Sweeps Festival events in and around Rochester. The multi-million selling singer made a name for herself as an actress too with starring roles in the likes of detective series Taggart and Band of Gold. Brothers by Willy Russell. To add her to her awards, she won an Olivier Award for best actress in a musical for her role in Spend Spend Spend in 2000. BUSINESS

Development County town

BUSINESSES are flocking to Maidstone High Street, council chiefs insist, as a result of the current improvements. Major renovation of the High Street has been taking place, with a view to improve how the county town looks, feel and works. Once complete, the scheme will see less road space given over to vehicles and a new public space created in front of the Town Hall. It is hoped the improvements will make the street more people-friendly and bring shoppers flocking back to the town centre – along with tourists. The work is due to be completed in April. Cabinet member for economic development and transport, Cllr Malcolm Greer said: “It’s pleasing to see so many shops which have recently made their way to

the High Street, or those that are about to open soon. The quality of work is of a very high standard and now shops are seeing the results they are beginning to move their business into the High Street. “This was my aim when I launched the scheme back in 2009 and now three years on we are on our way to creating more jobs, giving business more opportunity and really helping the economic development of the town.” A programme of events is also planned once the works are complete, which will bring more footfall down the High Street for the businesses to reap the rewards.

Andrew Masters, partner and head of employment, and Amanda Okill, associate at the

law firm and specialising in employment law, will look at how to manage long and short-term absences, how best to avoid potential claims, managing stress in the workplace, and also the increasing importance of disability discrimination law and recent cases. rewards that the partnership could bring. He said: “This is the first stage of an ambitious attempt to deliver really good skills across a wide range of software programs. “These qualifications will open the door to hundreds of thousands of jobs at companies such as Facebook and Twitter, which require skilled workers behind the scenes making their websites tick. “Another example of opportunity is the Xbox 360, which was the highest selling gaming platform last year but still needs more

people developing games for it. “That’s why we’ll be staying with this scheme for the long run, so we can all be successful together.” Meanwhile, staff and students at MidKent College are also piloting a number of qualifications due to be introduced by Hewlett Packard. Those enrolled on the courses will provide feedback to the computer firm ahead of a planned national rollout. Buckmore Park

The 22nd Buckmore Park Annual Awards Presentation Evening was held at the Mercure Hotel near Maidstone. Over the years, the event has attracted some big names from the world of Motorsport as guest presenters, but it was a first for the club when their guest, 2011 GP2 driver Sam Bird, broke the story that he had just been signed to be reserve driver for the Mercedes F1 team.

The main purpose of the evening was to present 150 trophies to the top drivers from all of the ages, classes and categories who race at Buckmore Park. The evening was choreographed by Chris Pullman and hosted by the inimitable Alan Smallman, but of course it could not happen without the behind the scenes efforts of Lorraine Pullman, Sheila Rose and Anne Marie Lepine.
