Welcome

A SMILE, it seems, still has that magical quality. And having recently been reading The Secret – a self-help guide focusing on the power of positive thought to help us achieve our goals – it keeps reminding me that it is a key weapon in our arsenal to influence and to put an old fashioned spring in everyone's step.

I discovered just how powerful it can be when I popped into Timpson’s in Maidstone to get a key cut.

The Stones keep rolling on

W

HEN Mick Jagger bumped into Keith Richards as the two school boys waited to catch a train back to their Dartford homes in the summer of 1960, they can never have imagined the chain of events they put in place. As they chatted about music and a shared love of rhythm and blues, they laid the foundations for a musical legacy eclipsed perhaps only by Lennon and McCartney in rock's rich hall of fame. And when the duo step on stage at Hyde Park in front of tens of thousands in July with the rest of the band they would go on to form – the Rolling Stones - they will perhaps pause a moment to cast an eye over a remarkable career which has spanned six decades. Among those in the crowd is likely to be Mick's youngest daughter – the final child of the rock star's long relationship with striking blonde model Jerry Hall – the remarkable looking Georgia May Jagger. At just 21 years old she has inherited all the good look genetics from her parents. She also has their ability to create a hugely lucrative career – with her face fronting high profile campaigns for the likes of Rimmel London, Hudson and Just Cavalli fragrance. She was even in Kent recently for a guided tour of the Rimmel factory in Ashford. When organisers of the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in London last summer pondered who to join Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell before an audience of millions around the world, it was Georgia who got the nod. Perhaps fashion was always going to be her obvious route to fame and fortune. Her mother Jerry Hall's career was a huge success long before she began her high profile relationship Jagger. And the eldest daughter of Jerry and Mick, Elizabeth Jagger – Georgia's sister – has long enjoyed success fronting campaigns for the likes of Tommy Hilfiger and Lancome. a

a Quite what it must have been like

growing up in such a famous household is difficult to imagine. “I grew up in Surrey,” she explains looking back on her childhood. “My parents are just my parents. Obviously they're very talented people, but in our family they're quite normal. “But it didn't cause me any problems growing up. The paparazzi don't hassle me, I went to school without any problems, I used the Tube. You just have to live as normally as you can. “My Mum always just says to have fun with fashion and not take it too seriously. “She's always been someone who has liked strong colours and been flamboyant with her clothes; you don't often see her wearing all black. She's passed that on to me and I love trying out and experimenting with clothes from her wardrobe.” Believe the tabloids, and she's a girl on a mission – to displace Kate Moss as the UK's most famous model. Certainly she knows how to secure the headlines. Her 21st birthday saw her dressed as some sort of satanic

creature complete with horns and carefully applied scales on her skin. As she rocked up to an East End club to celebrate with her friends and a host of famous faces, she sipped from a bottle of £195 a pop Dom Perignon. And she marked her move into adulthood by moving out of the family home she shared with her mother, and buying a London flat. She shares the property with another of the British modelling world's best known names – Cara Delevingne. Cara is best known for her work with brands such as Chanel and Burberry; and for dating Prince Harry. The two have become extremely close. Cara even joined Georgia when she and her boyfriend Josh McLellan jetted off for a holiday in the new year to the Caribbean. Josh, 22, is a part-time model and front man in a band trying to get their big break. Perhaps he should ask if Georgia could put a word in with her Dad? “I don't think anyone in our family has ever set out to be famous,” she says. “They just wanted to do what they are good at.

“My mother wanted to be a model, for example, and an actress. And if you are successful in those careers then you become famous but that wasn't her aim. It's not the reason she wanted to do those things. “And that's not the reason my Dad wanted to be a musician. “But being famous for being famous, without demonstrating any specific talent and without working, is not good.” There's little chance Georgia's star will be descending any time soon. She is a striking beauty with a ready-made back story to ensure everything she does is newsworthy; just what the biggest brands are seeking when they consider who to front their hottest products. But then when you're the daughter of one of rock's genuine legends it was always going to be difficult to fade into the background. The Rolling Stones' enduring popularity has perhaps never been more apparent than in the last six months when they returned to the stage in the UK. While there were gasps over the cost of tickets (with booking fees it cost over £100 for the 'cheap' a

mmm 13

mmm 15

a seats) when they performed two shows at the O2 Arena last year, it didn't stop them being the hottest tickets and selling out in minutes. What is more, when the band revealed they were to play London's Hyde Park for the first time since their legendary free concert attended by 250,000 people back in

1969, they sold out all 65,000 tickets in just nine minutes. And with the cheapest seats selling for ÂŁ95 it will certainly keep them in luxury in their old age. Mick Jagger will turn 70 at the end of July and there will come a time when he can no longer strut about the stage in the way the world has become familiar.

Until then, though, the appetite to see him and the Stones perform the hits which have made them global icons shows no signs of fading. Georgia May has some very big – and extremely talented - shoes to follow in the footsteps of. And to think it all started with that chance meeting between two school boys in Kent all those years ago. mmm

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome – your questions answered 28 mmm

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common problem affecting millions of women in the UK1. Many women with polycystic ovaries (which are detected by ultrasound) live with this condition without having any symptoms and live a normal healthy lifestyle. What are the symptoms? Women with polycystic ovary disease may suffer from menstrual irregularities (less frequent periods) missing their period for months or even years. This can lead to problems getting pregnant (infertility) due to cysts on the ovaries preventing proper development of eggs. Therefore ovulation does not take place, meaning that women with polycystic ovary disease might take longer to conceive compared to those without the disease. Other symptoms may include excess hair growth (hirsutism) and excessive weight. What causes Polycystic Ovary Disease? Mr Sadoon, Consultant Gynaecologist and Infertility Specialist at the Spire Alexandra Hospital in Kent, states: “The exact cause of PCOS is not clear yet. However, there is growing evidence that women with this disease have insulin resistance and excess insulin which is a contributing factor towards weight gain. Those women are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and diabetes in pregnancy. 2-4 Do I need tests, investigations and what is the treatment? It is important that women with symptoms of polycystic ovary disease should see a specialist in this field to discuss their concerns and determine short and long term management plans, if appropriate. Mr Sadoon also added “It is important to know that the management of polycystic ovary

disease is different from one patient to another”. Pelvic ultrasound is essential in making the correct diagnosis as is studying the ovaries using a conventional 2D scan and more recently, the 3D ultrasound which offers improved images and quality. This can usually be carried out at the initial appointment with the consultant. Blood tests are also important to measure the hormone levels. Treatment will vary from one patient to another. Mr Sadoon added that the aim of the treatment is to control and manage symptoms as there is no actual cure for the disease. Lifestyle changes such as losing weight can be a key factor in controlling symptoms and might be the only action required in mild cases. In those women suffering from infertility problems, the main treatment required is medication to stimulate the ovaries into producing eggs which then promotes ovulation. Mr Sadoon added “the response of the polycystic ovaries to the stimulation can be unpredictable and can cause the release of more than one egg, which increases the risk of multiple pregnancy and ovarian overstimulation”. Therefore, women who are prescribed any medication to promote ovulation should be monitored closely with ultrasound to not only check that they are ovulating, but to adjust the dose required if there are signs of overstimulation. Fifty Shades of Success The fastest selling book series ever

F

OR students at the University of Kent in Canterbury in the early 1980s they would have found it difficult to believe that among their number was a woman who would go on to be a publishing phenomenon. Perhaps more remarkable is that even today they may not realise that Erika Mitchell, on campus to read history after opting for the establishment after growing up in Buckinghamshire, is in fact EL James. And if that name doesn't immediately ring a bell, then just remember EL James is the onewoman powerhouse behind the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy – the first book of which has become the fastest selling paperback in history.

When you consider that outstrips the likes of JK Rowling's Harry Potter series, that is no small achievement. Yet the woman behind what is described as anything from 'mummy porn' to simply 'erotic fiction' is not one to hog the limelight. She has granted just a handful of interviews and were she to pass you in the street, the chances are you'd not recognise her as one of the most successful authors of her generation. In fact, one national newspaper described her as looking more like a “suburban school dinner lady”. The University of Kent says it doesn't comment on past students but has recently added her name to its alumni list.

And with the author keeping her own counsel, there's every chance we'll never really know what she got up to in Canterbury – whether it was there she met the inspiration for Christian Gray or, for that matter, college graduate Annastesia Steele. Certainly the perception when the book first hit the shelves was that the author must be American – with the book set in the States . Yet EL James – or Erika Leonard as she is actually known since her marriage to husband Niall – lives a rather quite life in west London. She shares her home with her two teenage children and is rare in making publicity appearances, enjoying her anonymity. Even her online site has only one clear image of her face.

mmm 31

It is all the more remarkable for the enormous success the 50 Shades books have enjoyed. It is estimated they have shifted 75 million copies in over 35 countries around the world, creating a huge personal fortune for their author. Her international fame is significant too. Not only does 50 Shades spawn a mini industry around it, but there are three films in the pipeline too – all of which will ensure EL James' powerbase in the entertainment world is cemented. Already named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people, she is likely to make that list again in the coming years. “When you set out to do these things you don't expect or anticipate this type of success at all. It's been a nerve-racking experience on one level because of that. So while terrifying on one level, I am constantly reminded just to try and enjoy the ride.” Erika Leonard was born in 1963. Her father was a BBC cameraman, a Scot, married to her Chilean mother. They raised her in Buckinghamshire, where she was privately educated, before she flew the

nest to read history at Canterbury. After graduating, she went on to become a studio manager's assistant at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield. It was while she was there she met her husband and the two tied the knot in 1987. Niall is no stranger to success himself. His screenwriting credits include work on the likes of hit TV shows as Silent Witness and Hornblower. His most recent work has been on a children's book. While he enjoyed his success, Erika started working for Shooting Stars – the company owned by comedians Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Both comics have spent much of the last 20 years in Kent – living in and around

Ashford. Her passion, however, was writing. And she began to indulge in fan fiction – using established characters to create new adventures. Using the pen name Darren Bent, she caught the attention of publishers for her work based on the Twilight series. It would eventually morph into something that would transform her life. She explains: “An early version of the 50 Shades story began as Twilight fan fiction which was posted on the internet. “The trilogy was picked up by an Australian publisher, The Writer’s Coffee Shop, who released them as e-books and print-on-demand paperbacks.

“Fan fiction is a great experience. To be able to put a story online and get that interaction is fantastic.” The rest, as they say, is history. The books have opened up the sector – adult-only literature for women which pushes traditional sexual boundaries. It is also being credited for turning on a whole new generation to books. She adds: “Since January 2012 my life has taken an extraordinary turn with the runaway success of the Fifty Shades trilogy. “From an early age I had always dreamt of writing stories that readers would fall in love with – and my dreams have come true. “Now that life seems to have settled down a little, I want to crack on and write my next novel – another adult, provocative romance. “If any one were to ask me for my thoughts about this whole experience, I would say: life is not a dress rehearsal – seize the day and follow your dreams.” EL James has certainly seen her dreams become a reality, and with Hollywood about to leap on to the 50 Shades bandwagon, we can expect to hear plenty more about her over the years to come. mmm

T

he newest novel to hit the market is Fifty Shades of Grey, with it causing a rise in sales in sex shops throughout the country. With the book only being published last year, people have been flocking in their masses to try and get a copy of the erotic novel, with it selling over 40 million copies worldwide, sex shops seem to be the business which is benefiting most from the novel. The series is made up of three different novels, with the other two being Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, revolving around a passionate and physical affair between literature student Anastasia Steele and young entrepreneur Christian Grey. The many erotic scenes

After the Grey has settled

within the novel have encouraged the use of different sexual practices and adult toys, which is why this industry has risen, as couples want to go the extra mile whilst in the bedroom. A local shop which has seen a rise in profits over

the last couple of months is Vibez Adult Boutique, Aylesford, with it being swamped with couples wanting to experiment with different methods and this is shown in the sales, with it being up by 100% in the last year. Mrs. Whitmore said: “It’s

amazing to see the reaction from Fifty Shades of Grey; we never anticipated the amount of people that come into the shop and mention that their partner is reading the book. When they mention this, I normally know the sort of things that they are after. “It’s great to see that this book has encouraged couples to experiment in this way. “I’ve been in the industry now for several years and this is the biggest demand the industry has seen since the 1980’s and 1990’s.” For the customers that are not familiar with the Fifty Shades series, Vibez Boutique is giving away a copy of the book, every time they spend £30 or more in store. mmm

Taylor-made Discerning Kirsty Keeling-Jones Branch Manager Baldwins Travel Agency Maidstone 01622 762141 Think you can't afford a few days in a city as well as a summer holiday? Here are some tips that might change your mind. City breaks are a great way to escape for a few days of culture. Here are a few tips for you to consider when looking into a city break Hotels The prices of hotels can vary greatly depending on the grade and facilities of the hotel. Remember, if you are looking at spending most of your time sight-seeing etc. you might not necessarily need to stay in an expensive hotel. The other way to look at costs is to decide to lower your expectations – to stay, perhaps, in a threestar rather than a four- or five-star hotel. Travel costs It is becoming difficult to generalise about air fares. You may choose a destination that looks good value on the ground, and then find that, the date you want to travel, flights are heavily booked and fares too high to make the trip affordable. Broadly speaking, the more airlines there are serving a destination, the lower fares are likely to be, but, as always with air fares, the earlier you book, the more likely you are to find a cheap fare. Travelling by Eurostar remains excellent value if you choose your dates carefully. And while the main destinations it serves (Brussels and Paris) can be expensive to stay in, it opens up a whole range of smaller cities in France and the Low Countries that are much more affordable – among the most interesting are Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp in Belgium; and Rouen, Reims, Lille and the Loire Valley in France. Of course, if you are within easy reach of a ferry port, some other good options are available to you. Smaller cities Another key money-saving strategy is to go for a smaller town or city, where prices are much lower than in the tourist and business hotspots. Our travel specialists at Baldwins Travel can help you find the right city and the right price! Call us or pop in to find out more.

Holidays for K Travellers

IRKER Holidays provides carefully crafted tailormade holidays to over 140 destinations in 40 countries - including 70 classic cities and over 250 relaxing rural locations throughout Europe and beyond. We create the perfect itinerary using selected hotels and private transfers with travel by any combination of air, rail, private car or Orient Express ideal for celebrating a special occasion in style. The Kirker Concierge will arrange opera and ballet tickets, pre-book museums, galleries and private guided tours, and reserve a table for a delicious dinner at a recommended restaurant.

Bruges In the Middle Ages, Bruges was one of the richest cities in northern Europe, but it was bypassed by the industrial revolution. The result is a Mediaeval masterpiece with cobbled streets, guild houses, palaces and stone bridges over hidden canals. In our unique Kirker Guide Notes we recommend some of the city's most delicious restaurants and the best bars to sample the local Abbey beers. Some of the finest examples of Flemish art can be found in the city as well as treasures from all over Europe. The richly detailed canvasses by Van Eyck and Memling seen at the Groeninge Museum and Michelangelo's moving and inspiring a

a Madonna with Child at the Church of Our Lady, are just a few of its treasures. Hotel De Tuilerieen (4* Deluxe) This family run property, a member of the 'Small Luxury Hotels of the World', stands on the edge of the Dyver canal and is one of the top hotels in Bruges. Formerly a noble's residence dating back to the 15th Century, the building has been beautifully restored and is now a cosy and luxurious townhouse hotel with a delightful courtyard, exposed brickwork and original beamed ceilings. The 45 rooms are individually decorated using a subtle mix of contemporary and traditional with soft creams and pastel colours. Three nights for the price of two and a complimentary upgrade for Kirker clients travelling on Sunday, Monday or

such a compact area. Paris beguiles with its broad tree-lined boulevards, iconic monuments, chic boutiques and elegant stores, colourful markets and remarkable museums. The food is worth the journey alone, with some of the finest gastronomic restaurants, wonderful traditional brasseries and an astonishing array of mouthwatering food markets. No two visits to this wonderful city need ever be the same. Our holidays to Paris include a two day (48 hour) Museum Pass which gives you complimentary access to over 60 museums, monuments and galleries including the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay, Musée Rodin, the crypt of Notre Dame and Château de Versailles. Tuesdays in the summer (1 June - 31 August). Price from £389 per person. Price includes: • Return standard class Eurostar • Accommodation including breakfast • Kirker's Guide Notes to restaurants, museums and sightseeing • The services of the Kirker Concierge to book opera tickets, expert local guides or a table for dinner Paris Few cities in the world deliver such excitement and romance in

Hotel Pont Royal (4* Superior) Located right in the heart of SaintGermain-des-Prés, surrounded by designer shops, art galleries, cafés and restaurants, the Pont Royal is just five minutes' walk from the river. This traditional first class hotel, renowned for its literary connections, re-opened in 1999 following major renovation, but has maintained its 'club' character and Parisian boutique style. The lobby, the Velin library lounge and the Signature bar are sumptuously furnished, rich in mahogany and silks. The hotel offers 24 hour room service and there is a fitness centre,

a massage room and a small Japanese garden. The 75 bedrooms and suites are comfortable and have an original modern painting and marble bathrooms. Joel Robuchon has opened his extremely popular restaurant L'Atelier in the hotel which is open every day for lunch and dinner. It is not possible to make reservations but the concierge will help hotel guests to the front of the queue. Three nights for the price of two for Kirker clients travelling in the summer (1 June - 29 August). The journey time from London St. Pancras International to Paris is 2 hours 15 minutes (2 hours 5 minutes from Ebbsfleet International).

We highly recommend a stay at the magnificent St. Pancras Renaissance hotel before you board your train to Paris. Formerly the Midland Grand, it dates from 1873 and reopened in 2011 after a painstaking restoration that has preserved its magnificent Gothic façade and Victorian interiors. Prices available on request. In Bruges, the hotels are within walking distance and an open ticket is provided on the local Brussels/Bruges trains. In Paris Kirker clients avoid the often lengthy taxi queues as all Kirker Eurostar holidays include a shared minibus or car transfer on arrival at the Gare du Nord to your hotel. At the end of your stay you will be collected and taken back to the station. Supplement for private transfers are available on request. mmm

Explore Europe... from right outside your doorstep

With summer almost here, can there be a more enjoyable means of discovering the wonders of Europe than an escorted holiday by rail?

O

N a train, your journey becomes a delightful part of your holiday experience, as there are many parts of the world that simply can’t be seen other than by rail. Trains can take you through vast forests, across isolated wildernesses, or even to the summit of soaring mountain ranges – all in total comfort. Avoiding the queues, stress and hassle associated with airports, travelling by train means the initial journey truly marks the beginning of your holiday - from the moment you step on board the Eurostar in one of the world’s grandest stations, St Pancras International. For those living in the South-East, Ashford

International and Ebbsfleet International offer a convenient place for passengers to join their Continental rail holiday without having to travel into London. Great Rail Journeys are the UK’s leading operator of holidays by rail, who provide a fully escorted firstclass holiday experience. Combining quality, high-speed rail travel with excursions to interesting and cultural places, fabulous four and five-star hotels, and the services of a friendly professional Tour Manager, Great Rail Journeys has over 30 years’ experience organising holidays by rail. On each tour, a programme of included excursions bring the destinations to

life, and free time provides the opportunity to explore at your own pace or simply relax knowing that everything has been taken care of and is in the capable hands of a friendly, professional Tour Manager. Great Rail Journeys’ sister company, Treyn, offer a similar level of service and expertise, with tours using Standard Class rail travel. Treyn tours will usually stay in carefully selected three-star hotels. Both Great Rail Journeys and Treyn place a huge importance of value and inclusivity – each tour has rail travel, transfers, hotel accommodation, a programme of excursions and many meals included in the price, as well as the

mmm 39

services of a Tour Manager and the protection of an industryleading Price Guarantee. There is no doubt that you couldn’t put such inclusive tours together yourself for less. The beauty of a holiday by rail is that even the journeys become part of the fun. Sit back and admire the ever-changing scenery from the comfort of your seat, as you encounter new places and people, and gain impressions of other cultures. As a train is the most spacious mode of long-haul transport, you even have the

added luxury of space. Far from being ‘hemmed in’ to your seat, you are free to get up and walk around freely between coaches and in many cases there is a separate dining area on board. Still others have dedicated observation coaches, actively encouraging passengers to move around within the train. So, from short trips to longer journeys you’ll always arrive in the very heart of your chosen destination feeling fresh, relaxed and ready to make the most of the inspiring guided tours and memorable sightseeing itineraries.

From your comfy seat on the train, you travel through the heart of the landscape, passing quaint villages, hill-top castles and fertile vineyards, marvelling at sights inaccessible by any other means of transport, through the panoramic windows of Europe’s terrific trains. Almost anywhere in mainland Europe, travelling by rail is a rewarding experience. But perhaps this is even truer in Switzerland. The gift of rail travel transformed overland journeys through the beautiful country – where the

mmm 41

stunning, wonderfully rugged landscape can now be appreciated, rather than being seen as an attractive but inconvenient obstacle. The rail experience stretches right across the country and all of its terrain, from rapid inter-city routes to the slower rack-and-pinion mountain lines. Getting around Switzerland is quick when you need it to be, but these rail journeys can also be slowed down to appreciate the views of the magnificent panorama outside the window – like on the Glacier Express tour. Billed as ‘the slowest express in the world’, the train passes all sorts of scenery on its route through the Alps, from the snow-topped mountain peaks and rushing rivers to lush meadows, wooden gorges and chocolate-box villages. Other breathtaking landmarks along the line include the famous curved Landwasser Viaduct and the Oberalp Pass, some 6,670 feet (2,203 m) above sea level. In Germany, rail travel is about racing from city to city on sleek, comfortable high-speed trains. Riding on the superb ICE (Inter City Express) or stylish Thalys trains, you can enjoy a multi-centre tour knowing that the next destination is

only a short, swift journey away. For example, the “Berlin, Dresden & Prague” tour with Great Rail Journeys links two stunning German cities with the beautiful Czech capital on an unforgettable 11-day adventure. For an introduction to rail travel, Treyn’s six-day tour “The Charming Dordogne” involves travelling on the Eurostar to Paris and a short rail journey through France by rail to the pretty town of Le Bugue. Here you’ll enjoy three days of excursions, including a cruise on the Dordogne River and a trip on the Truffadou steam train, as well as a free day to spend however you wish. You can also travel with Treyn, on the Jungfrau Railway in the heart of Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland. This incredible rail journey is one of the most extraordinary in the world, as it tunnels from the foot of the mighty Eiger to the highest station in Europe at 11,333 feet (3,454m). The journey is the centrepiece of the “Jungfrau Express” holiday with Treyn which also includes exciting excursions to some of Switzerland’s most fascinating places – along with free time for your own independent exploration. As well as a fantastic collection of

European holidays, both Great Rail Journeys and Treyn offer a superb selection of UK-based holidays, including tours to the Scottish Highlands, Yorkshire, Norfolk, Ireland, Devon, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and more. Great Rail Journeys has a comprehensive programme of worldwide holidays by rail, with tours to USA, Canada, South America, India, South Africa, the Far East and Australasia. With both Great Rail Journeys and Treyn, you can combine the pleasure of rail travel with the relaxation of a cruise holiday on a superb rail-cruise tour. From the romance of steam engines to sleek, modern highspeed trains, there are so many reasons to choose a holiday by rail. Join Great Rail Journeys or Treyn for a holiday this year and you’ll see why ‘by rail’ is the ultimate way to travel. mmm

FOOD mmm chosen recipes from your local restaurants Poached Smoke Haddock and Grain Mustard

Recipe by Village Hotel, Maidstone

1 x portion you will need: Ingredients 160g Portion of Natural Smoked Haddock 250mls Milk 1 Bay Leaf 100g New Potatoes 1 Free Range Egg 20mls White Wine Vinegar Flat Leaf parsley For the Sauce 60 mls White Wine Vinegar 60 mls White Wine 60g Shallots 60 mls Double Cream 250g Unsalted Butter 30g Wholegrain Mustard Method 1) Bring the milk with bay leaf up to the simmer and in sauce pan and place the smoked Haddock into the hot liquid. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the heat to slowly poach the fish, but not over cooking it. Also place the new potatoes into a pan and cover with water and season with salt, and bring to the boil and cooked for 10-15 minutes until tender, drain and keep warm. 2) For the sauce place the white wine vinegar, white wine and shallots into a separate pan and bring to the simmer and

reduce the quantity of liquid to 1/3 of the original amount. 3) Then add the double cream and reduce again so you have 1/3 of the original amount, then dice the butter and whisk briskly into the hot cream and wine reduction until it has all amalgamated and emulsified together, then add the grain mustard and put to one side. 4) Poach the egg for 2-3 minutes in good amount of simmering water with a splash of white wine vinegar

in to help the egg white stay tight together as it cooks. 5) Once the egg is slightly firm to the touch, drain well and set to one side. Remove the cooked smoked haddock from the milk and remove the skin if necessary, and place into a pasta bowl or similar, place the cooked new potatoes around, place the poached egg on top of the haddock and finally drizzle the grain mustard sauce over and around the fish, garnish with the flat leaf parsley.

We will remember them Chatham has had a profound impact in the Navy's history

mmm 47

C

HATHAM'S powerful link with the Navy is normally remembered by the heavy industry which once lined the banks of the River Medway. At its heart was the dockyard, a focus of employment and prosperity for generations; building both the great ships that allowed Britain to rule the waves while also allowing Medway to build into one of the county's – and country's industrial heartlands. However, its links are far more than simply the creation of the vessels which carried men to glory and triumph, or for the barracks which played host to the garrisons of men who swore to protect the nation. In the Great Lines Heritage Park is maybe the most prominent sign of

the other significant role Chatham plays in the history of the armed forces. It is there that the Chatham Naval Memorial is sited – a vast protruding obelisk which reaches into the sky; its stark white sides a powerful and moving reminder of those who gave their lives while in active service in the Navy. On its walls are the names of 8,515 sailors of the First World War and some 10,098 from the Second World War – young and old alike who made the ultimate sacrifice and perished while serving the nation. It stands overlooking the town; an enduring reminder to those who live and work there of the profound impact Chatham has had in the Navy's history.

Today managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Grade II-listed site continues to attract thousands of visitors each year, coming to pay their tributes. It forms an important part of the nation's memorials. Its creation came about after the Great War when the Royal Navy was faced with the challenge of commemorating those who had died on duty – primarily at sea – and who needed a venue in the UK where family and friends could remember them. A committee at the Admiralty were tasked with resolving the issue. They came back with a simple solution – place a memorial in each of the three major Naval ports of the UK. [

[ That meant Chatham, Plymouth

and Portsmouth. Sir Robert Lorimer, the prolific Scottish architect, was tasked with designing three identical memorials for each of the Navy towns. Renowned sculptor Henry Poole would add his flourish to the memorial. Of course, peace would last a little over 20 years before the Second World War erupted and the Navy was once again in mortal danger on oceans and seas around the world. The heavy losses would mean come the end of the conflict in 1945 the existing memorials needed to accommodate many more names. The Chatham Obelisk memorial needed an extension – an arch at the base of the memorial designed by Sir Edward Maufe. Created from Portland Stone it is adorned with brass plaques containing the names and details of the dead. Explains a spokesman for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission: “After the Second World War it was decided that the naval memorials should be

mmm 49

extended to provide space for commemorating the naval dead without graves of that war, but since the three sites were dissimilar, a different architectural treatment was required for each. “The architect for the Second World War extension at Chatham was Sir Edward Maufe, who also designed the Air Forces memorial at Runnymede, and the additional sculpture was by Charles Wheeler and William McMillan. “The extension was unveiled by the Duke of Edinburgh on 15 October, 1952.” The inscription above panels bearing the names of those who lost their lives reads: “In honour of the Navy and to the abiding memory of these ranks and ratings of this port who laid down their lives in the defence of the empire and have no other grave than the sea." The Commonwealth War Graves Commission continues to invest in the site to ensure it is kept in good order. Last year phase one of the work to clean and renovate the memorial

around the main obelisk took place – a three month effort. Perhaps most disturbing, however, is that the behaviour of the minority to a site dedicated to remembering those brave souls who died has been the subject of much unwanted attention. As a spokesman for the commission adds: “As a result of constant vandalism at the memorial, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has had to arrange for it to be regularly patrolled and public access limited to certain times during the day.” Yet despite the unpleasant taste in the mouth left by such mindless behaviour, it should go nowhere to tarnishing the memory of those it remembers, or its vital role it plays in the town and its mighty nod to a time in the past when the towns were a vital component of the nation's Naval operation. The dockyard may have been shut for nigh on 30 years, but its influence continues to hang heavy over the area. The memorial is a lasting, and fitting, reminder. mmm

Jacksons Fencing news, topical treats and more... mmm 59

A previous Jacksons photo competition entry: Ed and the post and rail fence

So enough of that, here’s something to take your mind off the weather and to keep you busy on those bank holiday weekends. We are running a photo competition for the next few months.

Another previous Jacksons photo competition entry: Jaktop fence and cheeky girl

After one of the worst winters for years I feel it may be best to not even mention the weather for fear of ‘tempting fate’. May is here, traditionally the month we have at least two bank holidays in, well that’s probably enough to scupper summer altogether!

Throughout May, June and July I would like you to email pictures of Jacksons products to me. Here are the sorts of photos we’d like to see: If you have installed a Jacksons product recently, it can be anything from a simple fence or gate, to a more ambitious project like a garden makeover with decking and pergola. Or, any Jacksons product, new, middle aged or old. We are well known for our products lasting in excess of 25 years, so we aren’t age-ist. We’d also like to see photos of your family and pets enjoying your garden with Jacksons products in view. Or your horses, cows, sheep or even your pigs! So long as there’s something Jacksons

in the shot. I think you have probably got the idea. Remember, most of our products sport our very special brass badge, so if you spot a badge like the one on this page, stop and have a look, is it one of ours? If yes, and it’s worth taking a snap of the product, whip out your camera or phone. We will be awarding a prize of £300 of Jacksons vouchers to the best photo, and ten runners up will receive prizes too. For full details on the photo competition and how to enter, go to your local page – www.jacksonsfencing.co.uk/ashfordlocal

You can get updates on other things as well on your local page like what’s happening with the Jacksons show gardens competition and which shows you can see us at throughout the season, to name just a couple of things.

As this desirable residence has now been completed by developers Parham, residents have the unique opportunity to spend summer at the Hamptons – ‘Gillingham’s best kept secret’. Potential buyers will soon have the exclusive opportunity to see behind the doors of this truly stunning residence as an open day is being held on Saturday, 11th May, from 10am to 2pm. This will allow purchasers to experience for themselves the fantastic waterside location and the remarkable quality of the homes. This superior development of

24 exclusive 2, 3 and 4 bedroom apartments is situated in a prime position overlooking the picturesque waterfront of Gillingham marina. The Hamptons offers panoramic views of the river from the large private balconies and substantial windows, which each of these highly-specified homes benefits. Daniel Parham from Parham comments: “The Hamptons, just like its American counterpart, has become a place to escape from the fast pace of the city, unwind in the sunshine, enjoy socialising in an exclusive residence or spend your time on the water with your very own berth. The outlook from the homes themselves is fantastic, where one can watch the boats come and go, or even purchase your own vessel with berths available

practically on the doorstep. The Hamptons is Gillingham’s best kept secret, but our forthcoming open day on 11th May will give people the opportunity to uncover just how much this exciting new address has to offer. This really is an exceptional residence which offers the promise of relaxing summers spent dining alfresco, it’s a perfect open-air oasis and has a luxury lifestyle to match. Although perfect as a summer getaway or weekend residence, The Hamptons also enjoys excellent commuter links. This makes it an ideal prospect for those working in the City who still want easyaccess to London every day, but who want more for their money. Plus, those looking to shape up for summer can do so at the on-site luxury health club – The Waterfront. Residents of The Hamptons receive an exclusive 15% discount on gym membership there, while the excellent restaurant and bar facilities within the health complex are open to residents. All-new Sport’s model LAND Rover used the Big Apple to reveal its latest bite of the premium sports SUV market. Its all-new Range Rover Sport was unveiled on the streets of New York, boasting of being the fastest, most agile and responsive Land Rover yet. Coming with added technological punch, it is also

the first sports model to boast seven-seats. Land Rover claims its all-new aluminium architecture means it saves up to 420kg, allowing the weight saving to benefit the handling. While it may still endear itself to the green brigade, it has reduced CO2 emissions to 194g/km. Land Rover’s global brand director, John Edwards, said: “We’ve taken ride, handling

and agility to another level for Land Rover to deliver a truly rewarding, sporting drive, together with unmatched luxury, capability and versatility. “Building on the success of the recently launched flagship Range Rover, the new Range Rover Sport also employs a vast array of new technologies which help to transform its performance, refinement and all round capabilities.”

BUSINESS

London Resort Company Holdings Leisure park delay threat

DEVELOPERS behind the planned leisure park in Swanscombe found themselves facing an unusual problem last month when a rare colony of spiders was found on the site. The distinguished leaping spiders may not be entitled to legal protection, but the discovery of one of only two colonies in the UK threatened to delay plans for one of the county's most ambitious projects. With a deal in place with Hollywood studio Paramount to use some of its best known licences – which could include movies such as Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones and Mission:Impossible – some £2billion is set to be invested in transforming the old cement works on the Swanscombe Peninsula into a major theme park. If all goes to plan, it will eventually be one of the biggest in the world, with a live music venue, hotels, white-knuckle

rides and a host of other attractions combining to make it a destination to appeal for an audience from around Europe. Utilising the speedy links from nearby Ebbsfleet to both London and the Continent, the potential is there – the trick now is to attract the enormous funding necessary to bank roll the plans. If all goes to plan, work is scheduled to begin in two years time and be complete by 2019. The spiders are unlikely to cause any major problems – with developers even suggesting they could incorporate them as part of the array of attractions. Tony Sefton is project director for London Resort Company Holdings, the consortium behind the park. He explained: “We will make sure we look after the spiders. “We always said we'd have a wildlife aspect to the park, so it could be that we ensure their habitat forms part of that.” The spiders are attracted to the site due to the alkaline land created by the cement works.

General Manager gets on his bike for charity

ThE General Manager of the Mercure Maidstone Great Danes hotel, Dominic Di Cara, was greeted with raised eyebrows when he introduced himself to his new Sales Executive, Mellissa Pett, on her first day at work. The reason being… he had forgotten to change out of his lycra cycling outfit after biking 12 miles from his home in Yalding to meet her at the hollingbourne venue! Dominic is currently in training for a mammoth cycling challenge in May and has therefore been pedalling to work most days to build up his fitness levels. his three-day challenge will see him cycling round the coastline of the Spanish island of Mallorca in aid of the Mercure’s chosen charity – Breast Cancer Care – alongside 20 other MAMILs (middle aged men in lycra) from the cycling club he belongs to, the Chequers Racers. Dominic says: “I discovered my love of road cycling a couple of

years ago and have been fortunate to find a group of like minded, easy going guys. As well as cycling into work and scaring the staff, I enjoy a run out most Wednesday nights with the Chequers Racers, who set off for 25+ mile rides from the Chequers Pub in Laddingford at 8.30pm. We live in a fabulous part of the world and are spoilt for choice with wonderful scenery all around.” In addition to his Mallorcan adventure, Dominic will be

participating in the London to Brighton Night Ride, which takes place on Saturday 13-14 July. Dominic adds: “I took part last year and found the experience really enjoyable, cycling 60 miles, watching the sun come up and reaching Brighton beach just in time for a proper English breakfast.” To find out more about the Chequers Racers check out the club’s website at: www.chequersracers.com

Now the plans can really start.” Medway Council director of children’s services, Barbara Peacock, added: “This is great news for Medway students. The council and its partners have always been committed to the delivery of a university technical college for Medway. “Medway’s economy will benefit greatly from having a UTC and now we are able to get on and make it a reality. “A UTC will enable a degree of specialisation prior to age 16 that is currently unavailable and which will re-engage and enthuse students.”

USIC On The Hill is back this July with a stunning weekend of outdoor music and entertainment at Kings Hill, close to the picturesque town of West Malling in Kent. Four separate and very different events are to be staged over the course of the weekend of 19, 20 and 21 July, 2013, offering a wide variety of entertainment provided by internationally renowned artists. The weekend kicks off in party style with a Friday night appearance by the inimitable Jools Holland, on stage with his sensational 18-piece Rhythm & Blues Orchestra and with Roland Gift, voice of the Fine Young Cannibals, as special guest, plus renowned vocalist Ruby Turner. (Friday 19th July) Saturday 20th July’s line-up this year will feature two separately ticketed events – media superstar Peter Andre takes the headline slot for Saturday evening with a dazzling new summer show. Due to popular demand the organisers are also delighted to welcome back McFly to perform a special afternoon show, following their sell out appearance back at the first Music on the Hill in 2011. Sunday 21st July - a fun-filled Family Festival day, hosted by Capital FM breakfast show and ITV presenter Dave Berry and packed with star-quality music and

entertainment – music from pop sensations Stooshe, X-Factor winner Joe McElderry, plus Gareth Gates, Cheryl, Jay and Mike of Bucks Fizz, Ben Mills, to the classic hits by Queen and the Rolling Stones, paid tribute to by Killer Queen and the Counterfeit Stones. Music on the Hill takes place in a custom-built temporary open-air arena in the heart of Kings Hill, is easy to get to and offers excellent parking at the concert site and good public transport links. Audiences are welcome to bring their own picnics, but will also find plenty of fairly priced, locally sourced food and drink at the event. The first Music on the Hill in 2011 attracted over 10,000 people and received unanimously positive feedback on its good organisation. Music on the Hill is organized by The Children’s Development Trust with the support of Liberty Property Trust. Every penny of profit from the event goes to local charities, such as Demelza Hospice Care for Children, and designer Karen Millen’s charity, Teens Unite Fighting Cancer, which provides support and care for teenagers with cancer. Funds raised by Music on the Hill in its first guise in 2011 were over £60,000, enough to provide two new community nurses for Demelza. Sarah Marsh, Events Co-Ordinator for Demelza said: “The money raised will make a real difference to the support we can continue to give to families across the area and help add life to days when days cannot be added to life." Karen Millen OBE, founder of

Teens Unite Fighting Cancer added: “The event will be a great opportunity for the local community to support local charities whilst having fun at what promises to be the music event of the summer. I am really looking forward to working with a group of teens that Teens Unite supports to design the VIP area at the festival. On our side, money raised will go towards a capital appeal for a care centre in Kent, after the first one opened in Herts earlier this year. It will make a big difference to Teens Unite and

will ensure that we can support more teenagers with cancer and other life limiting illnesses from Kent and the surrounding areas”. Saturday night headliner Peter Andre commented: “As a dad, I know how fun, demanding and truly special kids can be. Sadly I also know that some children and young people suffer from terminal or life threatening illnesses. These incredible charities support children and their families through the hardest of times. Let’s help support them, by buying a ticket and having a great time.” mmm
