“I play the tuba and was overwhelmed to receive my place with the GSM, I have been playing tuba for just over 3 years as well as singing and have played at many concerts during my time at King’s, most recently performing Hindemith’s Sontate I in the Scholars Concert. My proudest moment was singing for the Pope in Rome. I also enjoy performing in Rochester Cathedral during our Remembrance and Carol services. I hope to continue studying music after King’s and perform nationally and internationally”. Favourite piece to perform: Toreadors from Carmen

“From a very early age I was fascinated by music. Music has always been an essential part of my life. At the age of 3, I joined the local youth choir in my hometown in Bulgaria. My main instrument is the violin and I have been playing for over 10 years. The number of opportunities King’s offers is immensely wide. I was given a chance to perform in the orchestra, chamber formations and with the choir although my favourite memory is playing in Haydn’s Nelson Mass in Rochester Cathedral. I am proud to have broken the School record for the highest Grade 8 Examination result, with 146 at Grade 8 in Violin last Summer. I was delighted to be offered a place at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for next September.” Favourite piece to perform: Bruch’s Violin Concerto

I was about 6 years old when I discovered my love of music. I began singing lessons and I have been playing both the Trombone and Piano since I was 7. I have been blessed with many wonderful opportunities, including becoming BBC Chorister of the Year 2016, performing as a soloist in four separate productions for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden which were broadcast live in cinemas around the world, singing as a soloist at the Royal Albert Hall, recording as a treble soloist for Decca Classics and currently being awarded a place in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain on Trombone for the second year running. I also currently perform with the Royal Academy of Music Junior Department.” Favourite piece to perform: Bourgeois Trombone Concerto

“Violin is my main instrument and I have been playing for over 10 years. I also play the piano and I enjoying singing too. My proudest musical achievement so far is being accepted into the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire where I will be doing my undergraduate studies. I currently play with the Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra and the Guildhall Centre forYoung Musicians. King’s has had a profound influence on my playing as well as being an overall musician. I love playing in our concerts at Rochester Cathedral but I most enjoy the termly Scholars Concert. It allows us to keep performing and adapting to nerves and performance anxiety. After I leave King’s, I hope to become a professional musician working as an orchestral and chamber musician.” Favourite piece to perform: Any piece of Solo Bach

“I have always been passionate for music, however I didn’t let myself believe that it could become something I pursued as a career until I joined my A-Level class at King’s. Since Mr Mountford took us see the ENO’s performance of Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’, opera and I have been best friends. My biggest musical influences would have to be my first singing teacher Tabitha Reynolds (a King’s alumni), who is a professional singer the humbleness that accompanies her beautiful mezzo voice never ceases to amaze me! Apart from my successful audition to RCMJD, one of my favourite memories is my first solo in the Carol service in Rochester Cathedral.” Favourite piece to perform: Pieces where I can sympathise with the emotions expressed within them
“I am a singer and have been singing since I can remember. From a very young age I would repeat any tune I could get my hands on.Then I joined the children’s choir at my local church and found a passion for singing more classical material. King’s has also reinvigorated my love of the trumpet. I was thrilled to be cast in the recent production of Titanic the Musical. The acting, music and the pure exhilaration of performing in such an amazing production will stay with me forever. My musical highlight so far was passing my Grade 8 examination with a distinction the same day I was accepted into the NationalYouth Training Choir. After King’s I plan on taking my singing ability to new heights, aspiring to be of the likes of Pavarotti singing in operas and concerts”. Favourite piece to perform: Nessum dorma from Puccini’sTurandot

Music at King’s Rochester “Many musical journeys begin at King’s Rochester, from the first experiences of ‘Colourstrings’ in Nursery, right through to the large-scale orchestral and choral concerts and musicals in the upper years of the school. Music has always been central to the existence of King’s: The school was founded in 604AD to educate the choristers, which it still does to this day. All of the boy and several of the girl Cathedral Choristers (aged 8-13) attend King’s, and following a recent announcement by the Cathedral, the boy and girl choristers will be combined into one choir in the coming five years. Senior pupils are privileged to be able to use the magnificent Cathedral every day as their School Chapel and begin each day with a service held within this majestic space. On Mondays and Tuesdays, the senior and prep schools hold their respective Cathedral services to which parents are warmly invited. With a varied programme of music throughout the School, much of which is performed in the Cathedral, there is always a performance in rehearsal somewhere. It might be for a Pre-Prep concert where the opportunities to shine and grow in confidence begin, or in the Prep and Senior Schools where regular formal and informal music concerts, Open Mic Nights and annual House music productions are performed with high levels of professionalism. Our most recent production was a performance of Titanic the Musical involving over 100 pupils. Previous productions have including Into the Woods, Sweeny Todd and Les Miserables. Prep School successes have included Honk, Bugsy Malone, Little Shop of Horrors and Carpe Jugulum. The music department at King’s offers a pathway for all pupils, whether they simply enjoy playing and singing, are interested in pursuing graded music examinations, or want to make a career in music. With a range of ensembles, such as the Choir, Orchestra, Jazz, Wind and Rock bands, and a vibrant programme of regular open-mic nights, there is always opportunity for every child to flourish.” Mr John Mountford Director of Music, King’s Rochester
