The Cathedral’s newly restored Crypt and Library hold a wealth of priceless manuscripts, books, church plate and historical artefacts which are displayed for the first time in generations. Exhibitions in the Crypt showcase their amazing collections for visitors to enjoy. Kent’s most popular free attraction. Photography © Clive Tanner

Via a magnificent 14th Century door, enter the Cathedral’s Library which houses an outstanding collection of rare and historic books, manuscripts, photographs and lantern slides, some dating from the 12th Century.

Discover Rochester’s Mystery Book

Textus Roffensis is the only existing copy of the first code of English law and was written in Rochester during the early 1120s. It has been described as one of the most important documents in English history. This manuscript, written in Old English and Latin, is hugely important in the history of English law and language and is believed to have influenced the wording of the Magna Carta of 1215 and, later, the American Declaration of Independence of 1776. Historian Michael Wood says that the Textus is of “supreme importance... one of the few crucial works in the history of the civilization of the British Isles”. Photography © David Robinson

The Historic Dockyard Chatham A visit to The Historic Dockyard Chatham is the BIG day out that lasts all year! Steeped in history, this award winning maritime heritage attraction is the world’s most complete dockyard from the age of sail and is home to a remarkable range of museum galleries, iconic buildings and historic warships; together with an excellent programme of family activities, outstanding exhibitions and events throughout the year.

Opening Times

Open 7 days a week 11th February until 26th November 2017

What to do

Imagine what life was like as a Victorian rope maker; and make your own piece of rope on the authentic Victorian Ropery Tour. In the exciting ‘Hearts of Oak’ digital theatre, join retired Master Shipwright John North as he revisits the Dockyard of his youth and encourages his young grandson to follow in his footsteps. Discover Command of the Oceans, a new interactive gallery taking you on a voyage back to the ‘age of sail’ - a time when the people of Chatham Dockyard built ships like HMS Victory for the Royal Navy, helping to establish worldwide command of the oceans.

What’s on for 2017? From June to September 2017 the 350th anniversary of the daring raid on the English fleet lying at anchor on the River Medway – the Battle of Medway, or in Dutch the ‘Tocht naar Chatham’ will be commemorated with a series of events, exhibitions and cultural activities at The Historic Dockyard Chatham and throughout Medway, including Upnor Castle. Also, watch out for Doc.Yard – he’s back for the summer holidays! This time the Doc is talking Maths but it’s fun!! Their two big events – The Festival of Steam & Transport (Bank Holiday, Easter weekend Sunday & Monday) and Salute to the ‘40s (16th & 17th September) are back, bigger and better than ever! The ever popular object handling is also back, taking place in the holidays. Keep a train spotting eye out for their brilliant railway weekends! See the website for all the details, dates and times.

Discover two internationally significant maritime archaeological discoveries: The timbers of Namur (1756) intriguingly laid to rest ‘beneath the floor’ of the Wheelwrights’ shop and the Invincible (1758) collection of objects recovered from the sea bed are revealed, alongside the Dockyard’s previously untold astonishing story. Be gripped by stories of life aboard the Three Historic Warships: Step aboard HMS Gannet (1878) and be transported back to when the crew of this extraordinary vessel undertook anti-slavery operations in the Mediterranean Sea; swing through the hatches of Cold War HM Submarine Ocelot (1962), the last warship built at Chatham for the Royal Navy; and sit in the Captain’s chair of Royal Navy Second World War Destroyer HMS Cavalier (1944). Plus, become inspired by the creativity and innovation of those who worked at Chatham Dockyard during the 19th and 20th centuries in the powerful Steam Steel and Submarines gallery, and marvel at the collection of really BIG ‘things’ in 3 Slip The BIG Space you will be truly stunned at the incredible wooden roof. And it doesn’t stop there! Heroic stories are told in the RNLI Historic Lifeboat Collection and for those who would like a little peace and quiet, a visit to the tranquil Commissioner’s garden is a must! The children can let off steam in the Railway Workshop Refuel and Play indoor soft play or one of the two outdoor adventure play areas. With so much on offer you will be pleased to know they have two café restaurants, including their wonderful new Mess Deck, where you can sit back and enjoy wonderful food and reviving drinks! A visit would not be complete without a journey through No. 1 Smithery - an all-round treasure house for the whole family, including world class maritime treasures from both the National Maritime Museum and Imperial War Museums. www.facebook.com/ historic.chatham @DockyardChatham

They met in 2014 above a pub in London for their first rehearsal and only a month later went on to rouse the whole of the Hammersmith Apollo into a standing ovation during their first ever public performance of Stars in their first audition for Britain’s Got Talent. Having won their semi-final heat with over 63% of the votes, they then won the overall competition with one of the biggest majorities ever and subsequently signed to Simon Cowell’s label Syco, becoming label mates with the likes of One Direction, Little Mix, Susan Boyle and Il Divo. In the two years since the competition, Collabro have released a number one debut album “Stars”, and their follow up album “Act Two” peaked at number two in the charts in the summer of 2015. They have performed at the Royal Variety Performance, twice on Britain’s Got Talent including the ten-year grand final compilation of past contestants, and have become enormously successful internationally. Notably, they have performed for over 30 million people in Japan on Music Station on two separate occasions, completing a tour and winning a gold disc award for top international artist alongside Sam Smith and Meghan Trainor.

King of Pop - The Legend Continues is currently on tour in the UK and is taking British theatres by storm. Michael not only applauded Navi but also gave him a standing ovation and invited the impersonator to spend a day at his home ‘Neverland’. The pair remained close and due to Navi’s uncanny resemblance to the star, he was often hired by Michael to act as a decoy to distract mobs of fans and press. Navi has since continued to work at the highest level performing in a whopping 57 different countries and is now back in the UK for a national theatre tour along with his incredible live band and dancers.

In addition to the numerous Spitfires, there are other WW2 fighters, including a Hurricane, a German Messerschmitt Bf109E and a collection of classic vehicles.

The Hangar also conducts tours and sit in a Spitfire days. For more details or to book online: www. bigginhillheritagehangar.co.uk

The SpitďŹ re Company The aircraft within the hangar change as projects and maintenance are completed, but typically there are more than twelve Spitfires of various marks. Nowhere else in the world will you be able to enjoy such a concentration of Spitfire activity, more than a whole squadron in fact. Tours are conducted several times each week all year round, with morning or afternoon opportunities. There is ample free parking and guests are welcomed in to reception before being led into the main working hangar where before them lies an amazing array of Spitfires. Apart from observing the work in progress, each of the aircraft is visited in turn, with the history and technical details being described by a knowledgeable guide. There is plenty of opportunity for questions and answers and photography is encouraged at any time. They also conduct passenger flights in Spitfire aircraft from Biggin Hill, so if there is flying activity, test flights or engine runs being completed you will get a chance to view these in close proximity. You can even fly yourself subject to weather and availability on the day of your visit.

Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway Everyone is always welcome, family fun environment

Return fares £7 Adult £5 Senior Citizen £3 Child (3-15) Under 3s free £19 family (2A+4C)

This unique line was built in 1905 for the transportation of the raw materials required for the manufacture of paper and, of course, the finished product. The line which is built to a gauge of 2’ 6”, continues to use the steam engines and rolling stock that were supplied to operate the railway in its working life prior to preservation in 1969. Trains depart hourly 1-4pm on Sundays from Sittingbourne Viaduct, which is within Sittingbourne Retail Park and has free

parking (for sat nav please use ME10 2XD). The journey takes 15 minutes from end-to-end so a round trip can be completed in less than an hour, however, at least two hours are recommended for the visit.

History of the Line

Special events with additional trains

Four days of Steam over Easter Weekend, Jack the Station Cat & Edward Bear Weekend (30th April/1st May), Teddy Bears Picnic (28th May), Steam & Beer (1-2nd July), Art in the Park (19th August), Ivor the Engine Weekend (27-28th August) and Gala Weekend (23-24th September). During August trains run 1-4pm on Wednesdays and 11am-4pm on Sundays. Additional trains operate on event days.

The Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway is the preserved southern half of the former Bowater’s Railway built to move the raw materials for paper making and also the finished products around the mill at Sittingbourne. Edward Lloyd, the newspaper owner and publisher, built Sittingbourne Mill in 1867 to supply his empire with paper. The railway was originally horse drawn and was centred around the wharf on Milton Creek with lines into storage sheds and the mill. In 1905 the first steam traction arrived in the form of 2 Kerr Stuart ‘Brazil’ class locomotives – ‘Premier’ and ‘Leader’. The locomotive fleet grew and by the time of the system’s heyday there were 14 steam locomotives including two fireless engines, plus one diesel and one battery electric engine. The mill at Sittingbourne relied heavily on raw materials being brought in by barge. Milton Creek had gradually been silting up and always had a white colour due to the amount of clay and other by products of the papermaking process that were discharged into the creek. By 1913 this, together with the need for a greater volume of raw materials, saw plans for the building of Ridham Dock and Tramway. Building of this was hindered by the First World War, but the tramway was completed by 1916 and the dock was finally finished by the end of the war. This included a viaduct which, although originally designed as a steel construction, was actually built in reinforced concrete. This viaduct is over ½ mile long and is still in use today, but over the last 10 years more than £100,000 has had to be invested on its repair. www.facebook.com/ SandKLR @SandKLR
